Introducing... Our ‘Introducing...’ series of one off taster workshops are designed to offer an affordable first insight into a specific glass or ceramic technique. The focus is on explaining the process, showing examples and getting hands on with materials, tools and equipment for the first time. Introducing... Glass Engraving Date: Saturday 2 November Time: 13.00 – 16.00 Price: £30 per person This introduction to engraving on glass will show you how to use various drills and burrs then apply a design to a glass by choosing appropriate burrs to achieve the desired effect. You will have a finished engraved glass to take away with you. Artist: Sandra Snaddon. Introducing... Stained Glass Date: Saturday 9 November Time: 13.00 – 16.30 Price: £50 per person 7th Century saint Benedict Biscop brought artisans from Europe to create MonkwearmouthJarrow Priory. They made the first stained glass window in England and installed it in St Peters Church, as stone’s throw from National Glass Centre. Learn the ancient skills of how to cut glass, lead the cut glass and solder lead joints to create a beautiful small stained glass panel of your own. Artist: Gill McGinley.

Introducing... Fused Glass Date: Monday 21 November Time: 19.00 – 21.00 Price: £20 per person In introduction to fusing glass in the kiln which will teach you how to handle and cut glass to create your own unique coloured glass pieces such as coasters and jewellery then basic kiln firing techniques. Artist: Sue Woolhouse. Introducing... Ignite! Flameworking Date: Sunday 8 December Time: 10.00 – 16.00 Price: £50 per person This course will explore a range of flameworking techniques using borosilicate glass. Students will work with solid glass rods to make pendants, marbles, and miniature sculptural forms to take home. Artist: Zoe Garner.


Family Activities Our range of creative activities are perfect for fidgety fingers! Get hands on with glass painting, glass powder and clay to create keep sakes for your mantelpiece! Visit us during the school holidays to take part in our themed workshops for Halloween and Christmas! Tiny Tweeties Date: Mondays, 16 September – 27 January (term time only) Time: 10.00 and 11.00 Price: £4.50 / Age: 0-5 Sing along with the Tiny Tweeties duo. Followed by a 10 minute hands-on activity time for little ones to get creative.

Hotel Transylvania (Film) Date: Tuesday 29 October and Thursday 31 October Time: 15.00 – 16.30 Price: £1.50 per person / Age: PG Certificate Get in the mood for Hallowe’en with our special spooky screening of family favourite Hotel Transylvania!

Hallowe’en Hand Puppets Date: Monday 28 October and Wednesday 30 October Time: Drop-in from 10.30 – 15.00 Price: £3 per person / Age: 3+ Make a monster or creepy creature! Use a variety of different craft materials to decorate a coloured felt puppet.

Chilling Tales (Storyteller) Date: Thursday 31 October Time: Drop-in from 11.30 – 15.00 Price: Free Professional storyteller Gary Cordingley will be telling chilling tales to send a shiver down your spine!

Mix it up! Date: Monday 28 October Time: 10.15 – 12.00 Price: £12 per person / Age: 6+ Combine a mixture of exciting glass making materials to create your own colourful glass collage. * Trick or Treat Sandblasting Date: Tuesday 29 October and Thursday 31 October Time: Drop-in from 10.30 – 15.00 Price: £4 per person / Age: 4+ Get prepared for Hollowe’en by making your own creepy sweet jar. Design and make stickers which will be used to create a frosted effect on the surface of the jar using the sandblasting technique.

Painting Pictures Date: Friday 1 November Time: 10.30 – 11.45 Price: £4 / Age: 4+ Take inspiration for our exhibition and create a masterpiece on glass using brightly coloured transparent glass paint. Monks of Monkwearmouth Date: Friday 1 November Time: Drop-in from 10.30 – 15.00 Price: £3 / Age: 3+ Glass making was first brought to Sunderland by the Anglo-Saxon monks at St. Peter’s monastery. Find out about the monks that lived there then make you very own monk hand puppet.

...More Family Activities Festive Fusing Date: Saturday 14 December Time: 10.15 – Noon Price: £10 / Age: 6+ Create a beautiful pair of festive fused glass decorations using a variety of brightly coloured glass. * Sandblasted Glass Decorations Date: Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 December Time: Drop-in from 10.30 – 15.00 Price: £3 / Age: 4+ Create a colourful decoration to hang up at home. Design your own stickers and apply them to glass, watch as a member of the Learning Team sandblasts the surface then peel off the stickers to reveal your design on the glass!

Glass Painted Decorations Date: Monday 23 December Time: Drop-in from 10.30 – 15.00 Price: £3 / Age: 4+ Design and paint a unique Christmas decoration – perfect to give as a gift this Christmas! Use brightly coloured transparent glass paint to create an eye-catching decoration. Frosted Winter Panel Date: Friday 3 January 2014 Time: 10.15 – Noon Price: £10 / Age: 4+ Design and make stickers to apply to a clear glass curve then watch as a member of the Learning Team sandblasts the surface of the glass. Peel off the stickers to reveal your frosted design!

Blow Your Own Christmas Bauble Our ever popular Blow Your Own Christmas Bauble sessions are back! Bring the family along and start a new Christmas tradition or create a wonderfully unique gift for someone special. The perfect, affordable opportunity to have a go at glass blowing and create a beautiful memory to hang on your tree every year! “We attended the Glass Centre as a family and made glass baubles. We were delighted with our baubles which currently adorn our tree.” Your opportunity to enjoy the drama and creativity of blowing glass! Prepare the colours for your bauble and with help from our glassblowers, apply the colour and manipulate the pattern at an incredible 1100 degrees centigrade! Then blow the bubble to create a truly unique decoration.

Make Your Own... These one off glass and ceramics workshops are for all abilities. The focus is on the end result so you can be confident that by the end of the day you will have created a finished piece to take away with you (in some instances you may be required to collect your item at a later date). Make Your Own... Sifted Image Coasters Date: Sunday 3 November Time: 13.00 – 16.00 Price: £20 per person Design and stencil your own imagery using coloured glass powder to create a set of unique glass coasters for your home or a perfect gift! Artist: Zoe Garner. Make Your Own... Up-cycled Christmas Goblet Date: Sunday 10 November Time: 10.00 – 16.00 Price: £40 per person Up-cycle a wine bottle into a goblet or wine glass and personalise it with sandblasted imagery. A guaranteed talking point at parties! Artist: Zoe Garner.

Make Your Own... Microwave Jewellery Date: Saturday 30 November Time: 15.00 – 17.00 Price: £25 per person Use a basic microwave oven to fuse glass shards into beautiful jewellery in minutes. Do try this at home! Artist: Karin Walland. Make Your Own... Flame worked Marbles Date: Saturday 7 December Time: 10.00 – 16.00 Price: £50 per person Combine clear and coloured glass to form traditional marbles using specialist tools and flame working techniques. Artist: Zoe Garner.


Weekly Courses... Develop your design ideas and hone your skills to produce stunning results with our 5 and 6 week glass and ceramics courses. It is advised that complete beginners attend an ‘Introducing...’ taster workshop before enrolling on a weekly course unless otherwise stated. An opportunity to take advantage of our fabulous facilities, tools and materials. Gentle guidance is provided by our artist to produce your own stunning glass or silver jewellery.
