Visiting Artist – Amy Krüger 28 & 29 July Amy Krüger is an up-coming talent on the glass art scene. As a child she dreamt of becoming a glass designer and started her studies in glass-making when she was 16. Originally from Sweden, Amy has worked in several studios around Scandinavia. Amy specialises in hot sculpting techniques and her work is influenced by humour, passion and her childhood memories. Her work currently focuses on making unique glass girl sculptures, which aim to tell personal stories of Amy’s childhood. Amy will be demonstrating and experimenting making glass girls in our Hot Glass Studio on the 28 & 29 of July.

Jewellery: Wearable Glass 25 March – 1 October 2017 National Glass Centre presents an exhibition of newly commissioned glass jewellery made through exciting new collaborations between four artists working in glass and eight jewellers. Each jeweller has received one to one support from our resident artists who specialise in different technique’s associated with glass including hot glass, lamp work, casting, waterjet cutting and fusing. The exhibition re-invents jewellery through the Creative use of glass. Artists have explored the complexity of the material and have experimented to create new pieces that challenge our traditional image of jewellery. This exciting new 'wearable glass' is shown alongside the eight jewellers more established work and the work of the four artists specialising in glass.. Glasmuseet Ebeltoft Ebeltoft Glass Museum 17 September 2016 – 3 September 2017 Ebeltoft is a beautiful, traditional town on the central east coast of Denmark. The Glass Museum and its collection of over 1500 objects is a major feature of the town. Artists from
countries across the world have donated work to the collection which presents the finest examples of art created in glass. The museum has kindly loaned a selection of works from its collection for display at National Glass Centre. The exhibition includes a number of works by Finn Lynggaard, one of the Studio Glass pioneers in Denmark and founder of Glasmuseet Ebeltoft. National Glass Centre Collection 9 September 2017 – August 2018 National Glass Centre and NGCA will jointly present the first exhibition featuring works of art held in our collection. Established in recent years the collection features work by world leading artists, many of whom have made the pieces shown during visits to National Glass Centre.

Research Gallery
Helen Pailing: Recrafting Waste 24 June – 3 September 2017 Helen Pailing is an artist currently at the mid-point of her PhD studies here at National Glass Centre at the University of Sunderland. The exhibition shows recent work from Helen’s doctorate research exploring ‘recrafting’ waste glass. Helen will be installing a major new work in National Glass Centre’s double height foyer space this August.

Zoe Garner: Invisible Forces 9 September – 3 December 2017 Zoe Garner is an established artist based in North-East England. This exhibition presents Zoe’s recent work investigating invisible forces, cause and affect and associated scientific theory. The work is created using a glass making technique known as ‘lamp-work’ or ‘flame-work’ which Zoe teaches on a regular basis at National Glass Centre. Please see pages 14-15 for further details. Chad McCail: ‘Liars of Earth’
Long Gallery, National Glass Centre 24 June – 8 October 2017 Chad McCail’s monumental 100-foot long monochrome drawing is shown here for the first time in this country. Across a vast landscape that encompasses all of the institutions that shape us, McCail explores how we can combine forces to work together, and defeat those who would rule over us. His epic work asks how we might live together in the twenty-first century to share our resources
more equally, and to create a new way of life. Liars of Earth is an allegory of the way we live now: and of things to come. On the one side of a great divide are masked, robotic figures which have been commanding the landscape, exploiting its produce, and manipulating our labour, for their own gain. On the other side are massive mythical characters including a minotaur, a snake, and a “man of men”, a giant figure built of hundreds or thousands of individuals, all working together to defeat the robots and propose a new order. McCail’s work asks us to imagine other possible worlds in which we might unite to overcome the forces that remain aligned against us. Summer Sandcast – Car, Owl or Butterfly Monday 14, 21 & 28 August Thursday 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 August 9.30 – 10.30 / 10.30 – 11.30 £15 each / Min age 6 Create a glass shape using sand to make a mould. Add your own colour and decoration to make your design unique. Watch as your design is transformed by our studio team who will pour molten glass into your mould to produce your own individual piece of art. (all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult). Max 10 people per hour Please note – Sandcast objects have a textured/sandy surface on the reverse side and may contain bubbles. Sandcast’s will be available to pick up 1 week after your session.

Family Fusing Get together as a group to make a large fused glass panel. Learn about the fusing process, discuss your ideas and draw a design for your collaborative project. By taking part in any of our workshops and completing our trail your child can earn a Discover Arts Award. Creative workshops start at £3pp and all count towards the qualification whilst offering a range of different themes and techniques. The trail is free and is designed for families with quick activities and discussions points. Discover Arts Award is suitable for anyone over the age of 5 and under 25 years. By completing a creative workshop and the trail you will have completed this national qualification and receive a certificate from Trinity College London. Bend Me Shape Me with Zoe Garner FIVE DAY MASTER CLASS July 31 – August 4 / 10.00 – 16.00 / £695 – light lunch included each day in our eatery The Glass Yard Booking Essential Drawing concepts, ideas and designs from the beautiful local environment this skills based class will explore the possibilities and potential of flameworked Borosilicate glass in Contemporary Art. Using Clear borosilicate over five days. Glass (PYREX) solid glass rods will be transformed in to sculptural components and glass tube will be blown to be connected in the flame to form larger scale installations. Through a combination of demonstrations and free practice time, starting from basics we will build a vocabulary of flameworking skills that will form a solid grounding to move forward using flameworking as an art form.
Introduction to Casting with Effie Burns FIVE DAY BEGINNERS’ COURSE July 24 – 28 July / 10.00 – 16.00 / £595 – light lunch included each day in our eatery The Glass Yard Booking Essential This week long course suitable for beginners will show you how to create a range of beautiful cast glass pieces. You will be supported to make work that is important to you, whether your inspiration comes from the land or the sea or your family history. The course will cover using clay and wax to create form and texture, an introduction to mould making and cold working. You will learn how to make small intricate cast glass pieces, how to make and fire an open cast mould and how to do lost wax casting. The final day of the course will introduce you to the technique of pâte de verre. An ideal opportunity to experiment, learn new things and enjoy the making process.
