Lantern Parade 2015
Make a lantern with your class or community group and bring it along to National Glass Centre to take part in the Sunderland Illuminations Lantern Parade on Friday 23 October.
Simple Cylinder Lantern Level Easy: suitable for all ages Materials A3 lightweight paper Sellotape Hole punch and string Coloured paper and glue for decorations Paper plate Battery-operated tea light Instructions 1. Decorate your paper with markers, crayons, tissue paper, anything you can think of! 2. Trace and cut out shapes. Light will shine through these holes when your lantern is lit. 3. Carefully roll your paper into a cylinder and tape the seam together. 4. Use a pencil to trace the bottom of your lantern onto a paper plate. Cut this circle out with scissors and secure to the bottom of your lantern with tape to make a tray for your tea light. 5. Punch two holes in the top of your lantern. Tie a string through the holes to make a handle.
Chinese Paper Lantern Level Easy: perfect for KS1 pupils. Materials A3 coloured card Scissors Pencil Ruler Sellotape Paper Plate Battery-operated tea light Instructions 1. Fold the card in half along the long side. 2. Cut a straight line from the fold, leaving a 3 - 4 cm space before the bottom. 3. Repeat this step across the fold, spacing your cuts 1cm apart. 4. Unfold and bring the two short sides together. Secure with tape. 5. Cut a strip of paper for the handle and tape to the top. 6. Use a pencil to trace the bottom of your lantern onto a paper plate. Cut this circle out with scissors and secure to the bottom of your lantern with tape to make a tray for your tea light.
Tissue Window Lantern Level Easy: ––perfect for KS1 pupils Materials A3 coloured card Coloured tissue paper or coloured acetates Scissors Pencil Ruler Sellotape / Glue Battery-operated tea light Instructions 1. Trace and cut out shapes in your card, leaving a 2cm border around the edge. 2. Cut pieces of tissue / acetate and glue these to cover the cut out holes. 3. Turn your card over and carefully roll it into a cylinder, taping the seam together. 4. Use a pencil to trace the bottom of your lantern onto a paper plate. Cut this circle out with scissors and secure to the bottom of your lantern with tape to make a tray for your tea light. 5. Punch two holes in the top of your lantern and tie a string for a handle.
Box Lantern Level Moderate: suitable for KS1/2 Materials A4 / A3 coloured card 8 flat wooden sticks Coloured tissue paper Scissors Pencil Ruler Sellotape / Glue Battery-operated tea light Instructions 1. Tape four wooden sticks together to make a square – repeat (you’ll need two). Attach two more sticks in a cross in the centre of one square for the tea light to rest on. 2. Measure the length of your four sticks and cut paper so that it is long enough to wrap around. 3. Glue the outside of the four wooden sticks to the paper – you’ll want to do the top and bottom at the same time. 4. Glue the outside seam of the paper together. 5. Decorate to your liking. 6. Attach string at the top to make a handle.
