William Tillyer The Sunderland Sky Dishes

A Fish Out of Water is the debut solo exhibition of a two year photographic project, documenting the end-of-life recycling of a 5000 ton Royal Navy Tanker.

With work influenced by the North Yorkshire landscape, William Tillyer has enjoyed a highly successful career working and exhibiting internationally since the 1960s. His work has constantly evolved and developed through experimentation with watercolours, oils, acrylics, drawing, printmaking, and three-dimensional constructions. He has recently developed new work in glass, facilitated by glass artist James Maskrey, at National Glass Centre. This will be displayed in our Long Gallery and as part of a major exhibition at mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, until 9 February 2014).

Iconic style makers – Givenchy, Dior and Vidal Sassoon. Think cult films of the fifties & sixties. In the second half of last century, when it came to eyewear, Oliver Goldsmith was synonymous with stars and style.

Featuring spectacle designs which enthralled a generation and photographs of the famous faces that wore them, this exhibition charts the progression of one of the most successful British spectacle design companies of the mid-twentieth century.

Bringing together large-scale contemporary and traditional photographic prints and physical evidence from the ship, this exhibition sparks debate about and reflection upon Sunderland and the North East’s past, present and future relationship with a globalised shipping industry. Commissioned by National Glass Centre in partnership with Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art with support from Grants for the arts.

Explore the weird and wonderful world of optometry over the decades, in this exhibition of items from The College of Optometrists collection. View the tools of the trade from rules and face measures, to practice eyes and models, to glass eyes and lenses. Curated in collaboration with Neil Handley, Curator of the British Optical Association Museum at The College of Optometrists. college-optometrists.org

New photographic work by Chris Blade, inspired by an artists’ residency in Svalbard, a mountainous Arctic archipelago, just 10 degrees from the North Pole. The work explores the artist’s response to the scale and remoteness of the landscape. Irish sound artist and composer Dr. Karen Power, who also took part in the artists’ residency has composed a soundscape which will accompany the exhibition. chrisblade.com

On loan to National Glass Centre from National Museums Scotland, this exhibition showcases 74 pieces by 54 different artists from the Dan Klein and Alan J. Poole Collection. This impressive selection presents the work of some of the leading British Studio Glass artists, outlining the progression of the British Studio Glass Movement from the 1960s through to today.

To complement this exhibition, the University of Sunderland’s Art and Design Foundation and Glass and Ceramics students will create an exhibition considering connections between art and the human eye.

Free Glass Making Demonstrations

National Glass Centre hosts the first Glass and Ceramics Collectors’ Day in partnership with the North East’s leading auctioneers, Anderson & Garland Ltd. Bring your glass, ceramic and small collectible items to be valued by two specialists, whilst the University of Sunderland’s Dr Jack Dawson will be discussing 20th Century Glass and Ceramics and how to start collecting.

Sunderland has a rich heritage of glass making that dates back to 674AD. Benedict Biscop, founder of Wearmouth-Jarrow monasteries, brought skilled craftsmen from Gaul to create the first stained glass window in England for St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth. Using compelling personal stories from local people and striking audio visual display, this interactive exhibition charts the origins, growth and legacy of glass making in the City.

A series of free talks given by professionals working in the glass and ceramics field. These will take place in Lecture Theatre 007, St Peter’s Campus, University of Sunderland.
