PERSPECTIVE

Dear Friends, In this period of macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty, we have certainly had to adapt, yet our love of flying, our passion for global travel and our desire to connect endures, driving the evolution of business aviation into a lifestyle travel experience. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak on this evolution at the Milken Institute Global Conference, where I explored how the unwavering desire for human connection is driving a savvy new generation of travelers to fly privately. Health and safety remain central to our travel experience, as well as sustainable actions that support the industry’s commitments to Fly Net-Zero by 2050. Together, new users and buyers, coupled with these new priorities and trends, are leading to private air travel that is safer, healthier, greener, and more efficient—enabling greater accessibility and a more seamless experience. Embraer continues to empower air mobility by fostering human-centered experiences through our industry-leading products, disruptive innovations and advanced technologies. At EBACE in May, we launched the all-new online configurator (more on page 32) that puts the power in your hands to personalize a Phenom or Praetor family aircraft to your unique bespoke style. Before the event, Flexjet also announced the expansion of its European fleet with an additional firm sale that includes more Praetor 600s, the only super-midsize jet capable of flying from London to New York non-stop. Additionally, Flexjet has become the first Legacy 500 customer in the world to install Ka-Band’s home-like Wi-Fi as an aftermarket modification on its European fleet. We’re clearing the way for a more sustainable future today, including our recently announced partnership with 4AIR to offer carbon offsetting to new customers who sign up for

ESCAPE

NORTHERN ESCAPE An off-grid trip to Alaska’s most secluded luxury lodges comes with larger-than-life scenery, epic adventures and gourmet meals to remember

A

merica’s biggest state is a land of untamed wilderness, colossal mountain ranges and rugged coastlines. “Summer is a great time to visit,” said Jimmy Caroll, Co-founder of Pelorus, an experiential travel company that specializes in bespoke adventures and yacht expeditions in extraordinary destinations. “Extended daylight means you have more time to pack in all the adventures you could want, from hiking and biking to fishing, kayaking and glacier trekking.” Wildlife encounters are a trademark of travel to the region. Vast tracts of unspoiled forest, sparkling waterways and big skies are home to an abundance of bears, moose, bald eagles, humpback whales, orcas, and sea lions, to name just a few. “Alaska is so immense it constantly feels like you’re discovering something for the first time,” Caroll added. Adventure purists who prefer a touch of luxury in their lodgings will not be at a loss. Alaska boasts a slate of exclusive accommodations flanking the state’s most impressive national parks.

TUTKA BAY LODGE Start your trip at sea level by chartering a seaplane in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, and flying directly to Tutka Bay Lodge’s private dock. The six-room resort (open May through September) sits on a scenic cove in the Kenai Peninsula overlooking a glacial fjord and is surrounded by a 25-acre spruce forest edging Kachemak Bay State Park. Owned and operated by Cordon Bleu–trained Kirsten Dixon (a James Beard Award winner) and her daughter, Chef Mandy Dixon, the property attracts epicures with a sense of adventure. Guests can embark on foraging and fishing expeditions to gather provisions from land and sea, which are cooked over a live fire under the chefs’

watchful eyes. Menus featuring local and sustainably sourced ingredients are updated daily with dishes like king crab beignets and salmon curry. Those hoping to expand their culinary repertoire can take one-hour cooking classes hosted by the chefs. Beyond the kitchen, the 36acre property and surrounds are a haven for bear viewing, birding, dockside fishing, canoeing, whale watching, and, as of recently, backcountry heli-biking. To rest weary legs, guests can visit the lodge’s sauna and outdoor hot tub or book complimentary massages and yoga classes. Its sister resort, Winterlake Lodge, is a great add-on for backcountry hiking in the Alaska Range, kayaking and river rafting.

TORDRILLO MOUNTAIN LODGE This is exactly the type of adventure outpost you’d expect from an Olympic ski racer and a heli-ski pioneer. A 40-minute helicopter flight from Anchorage, the lakeside lodge is a veritable alpine playground with an endless roster of pursuits from foil boarding and kayaking to wakesurfing and canoeing. “The lodge has all the gear for guests to use, along with some of the best guides in the industry,” noted Caroll. Helicopters take thrill-seekers to lofty summits in the Tordrillo range to hike, bike, raft, climb, and ski. In June and July, when the sun shines for 22 hours a day, guests can pair a day of skiing corn snow (named for the large crystal “kernels” that form as a result of melt-freeze cycles) with high-altitude fishing for king salmon, rainbow trout, arctic char, and grayling.

Tordrillo Mountain Lodge recently launched Alaska’s first Via Ferrata rock climbing course that lies 4,000 vertical feet above sea level overlooking panoramic views of the Triumvirate Glacier to Tordrillo’s sawtooth peaks. Guests can also strap on crampons to hike giant glaciers. For a unique bird’s-eye-view of wildlife, Caroll suggests boarding the lodge’s high-wing Otter for a sky-trekking safari. Back at the lodge, post-adventure feasts spotlight Alaskan seafood, regional game and in-season vegetables from the garden paired with a 500-bottle wine list.

SHELDON CHALET On a nunatak (granite outcrop) just 10 miles from the 20,000-foot peak of Denali, the highest mountain in North America, sits a five-room luxury retreat inspired by Alaskan bush pilot Don Sheldon. Built by Sheldon’s children as an ode to their father’s intrepid life and passion, the remote hexangular chalet is accessed by a 45-minute helicopter flight from Talkeetna. Guests touch down in the Don Sheldon Amphitheater, a snowy bowl encircled for 35 miles by the magnificent Ruth Glacier in the Denali National Park and Preserve. “Family owned and managed, we know our travelers are in the best hands as they dine on the finest food in Alaska, watch shooting stars and have all types of icy adventures in one of the most far-flung corners of the world,” said Caroll. Some of those include guided ski-touring, glacier trekking, igloo-building, sledding, and exploring ice caverns. From September to April, the aurora borealis puts on a transcendent show of billowing green light shifting in the night sky. Guests warm up after polar excursions in a cedar sauna whose window frames the same majestic mountain view as the floor-to-ceiling windows wrapping the chalet. Michelinworthy meals from the live-in chef (think halibut, king crab and braised bison) allow guests to savor local flavors without ever losing sight of the sublime pageantry that makes Alaska such an epic destination.

EMBRAER TIP Fly non-stop from Teterboro to Anchorage in exceptional comfort thanks to active turbulence reduction and best-in-class cabin altitude onboard the Praetor 600.

THE SCENIC ROUTE Andean culture, monumental rockscapes and high-altitude wines are but a few of the many high points on a road trip through Argentina’s rugged northwest region at the foot of the Andes

T

he provinces of Salta and Jujuy, once part of the Inca Empire, have a markedly different feel than the rest of the country. Here, a fusion of indigenous traditions and colonial influences are just as distinctive as the outsized rock formations and striated ravines carved by the ancient hand of time. A network of legendary highways careens through a diversity of landscapes that transition from lush valleys and subtropical forests to burnt ochre ridges, arid highlands and shock-white salt flats, all within a day’s drive. “This remote region has a huge sense of place,” shared Maita Barrenechea, Founder of Mai10, a premier luxury outfitter based in Buenos Aires. “It’s great for travelers who want to get off the beaten path and explore a lesserknown area of Argentina.” To navigate the gravel roads and hairpin turns, a 4x4 vehicle is essential. If you’d rather be behind a camera than a wheel, enlist local travel expert Fernando Escudero, Owner of Auténtica Salta—a boutique tour operator specializing in Northwest Argentina—to be your private driver, guide and unofficial personal photographer (a particular talent of his). Block off a week or more to immerse yourself in the vastness of the scenery and vibrant local customs. Bespoke itineraries follow a circuitous north-to-south route or vice versa depending on traveler preferences.

Whether you’re flying directly into Salta or taking a twohour flight from Buenos Aires, make your first stop House of Jasmines, an elegant Relais & Châteaux estancia located just 10 minutes from the airport. The 100-year-old adobe mansion, once owned by actor Robert Duvall, sits on an idyllic 247-acre estate boasting mountain views, flowering gardens and a standalone spa with a Turkish bath. For a jolt of high-desert adventure, head north to Purmamarca, a sunbaked adobe village in the province of Jujuy. Book yourself into El Manantial del Silencio, a colonial-inspired boutique hotel featuring Cusqueña oil paintings, a tiny chapel and large windows framing mountain views of the Humahuaca Gorge. The sound of live music spills out of the pocket-sized pueblo’s folkloric peñas, while markets vend colorful textiles and handicrafts carved from fallen cacti. Rising above the village is the famous Hill of Seven Colors named for its rainbow of mineral tones—hike the Los Colorados trail for a closer look. Set aside a full day to visit the UNESCOprotected Quebrada de Humahuaca. Check out Uquía’s remarkable 17th-century chapel hung with rare paintings of arquebus-toting angels before venturing to Las Señoritas trail with a local guide to trek cinematic red rock formations, narrow gorges and quiet caves. Its colossal bluffs, salmoncolored chasms, towering cardones (candelabra cacti), and wind-sculpted peaks inspire a sense of timelessness and awe. If your schedule permits, take a road trip north to visit El Hornocal, a striking geological wonder dubbed the “14-Colored Mountain” for its layer cake of multihued sediments. 18 · Advantage Vol16 2022

“ This remote region has a huge sense of place. It’s great for travelers who want to get off the beaten path and explore a lesserknown area of Argentina.”

Another day, navigate a series of scenic switchbacks to reach the Puna, a highland plateau sitting at 13,500 feet in the Andes range. (Pack some coca leaves to help with the altitude.) Near the borders of Chile and Bolivia, you’ll arrive at impossibly photogenic salt flats cradled by mighty massifs. Pop into Pristine Camps for a gourmet lunch. The new high-end glamping site serves up multicourse dishes like llama carpaccio and goat provoleta. It is recommended to book a reservation well in advance. Heading south, stopover at family-run El Bordo de Las Lanzas to experience true Salteña hospitality and gaucholed horseback riding adventures. The 300-year-old working estancia is brimming with rural artifacts like horse-drawn carriages and filigreed sterling spoons. Guests experience authentic asado barbecues hosted by the estancia’s affable owner and feast on provincial homemade dishes like carbonada and huaschalocro followed by digestive burro tea from the garden. Driving through the Calchaquí Valley’s ever-changing scenery, take in the dramatic landscapes of Quebrada de Escoipe and Cuesta del Obispo to Los Cardones National Park. Make La Merced del Alto your base to explore Cachi, a cobblestone Spanish-colonial town oozing with charm. In the company of a local guide, explore the area’s fertile lands fed by snowmelt rivers and dotted with wild guanacos and giant cardones backed by snowcapped peaks. While cruising the gravel tracks of Route 40 towards Colomé, visit El Camino de Artesanos, a recently upgraded artisan trail in Seclantás where weavers sell handmade llama and lambswool shawls, ponchos and interior decor right from their homes. FUTURE OF TRAVEL

FIRST CLASS SELF-CARE 2022 will be the year many people invest in self-improvement, and a new breed of personal development retreats are here to help reignite your inner spark

C

hange is in the air, and after many months of isolation and uncertainty, we have emerged into the sunlight, ready to seek more from life. The Great Resignation is only one sign, but there’s clear evidence of this shift as millions of people worldwide have quit their jobs to pursue new career paths and opportunities. In line with ancient Toltec and Aztec wisdom, we have entered the time of the Sixth Sun, which focuses on personal development. This cycle represents the slow transition from external motivations to a desire to conquer one’s inner life. Traditionally, achieving spiritual and personal transformation has been equated with long periods of solitude on a mountaintop or in a temple. Those tranquil venues served as a place to ponder one’s identity and purpose. While modern life feels less flexible, the path to personal development has many roads. Presently, travel and positive psychology are merging to create body, mind and soulexpanding programs in inspiring environments to help facilitate the journey to selfknowing. As an experienced Psychologist and Executive Coach, Dr. Tom Cotton is the Founder of Mind Environment and part of a new wave of immersive retreats that develop human potential in extraordinary places. “Whether

MEA was started by hospitality entrepreneur Chip Conley, the “Modern Elder” who helped the young Airbnb founders to shepherd Airbnb from startup to household name and wrote a book on effective intergenerational teams. “Midlife is a time of adulthood that is full of change...so it’s a ripe time for people to reimagine and repurpose themselves.” The Academy’s campus in Baja California Sur is set in a quaint beachside village. Open and airy, the rooms and grounds include dozens of cozy nooks to reflect or chat, along with a yoga studio, library and organic garden. On campus, workshops use principles based on academic research from Yale, Harvard and UC Berkeley. MEA’s programs aim to reframe our relationship with aging and shift the primary aspiration from infinite leisure time to cultivating purpose and connection. With the support of over 2,000 alumni from 33 countries, MEA is disrupting the retirement living model with Baja Sage, the first sold-out community of homes built

around a regenerative farm. Its key principles of regenerating soil, soul and community will extend the Academy’s mission into everyday living. For many, travel has chiefly provided a sense of escape. But in reality, the true joy of travel comes from the self-discovery attained through encountering new environments, cultures and people that challenge our preexisting ideas about life and how the world works. While this can be uncomfortable for some, such experiences can be used to accelerate personal growth. Whether it’s corporate-focused programs, reassessing our identities, or finding new inspiration through conscious travel, all these programs offer actionable insights and tools for better living. On both an individual and collective level, there is no better time than now to actualize our potential, embody Gandhi’s famous words and truly be the change that we seek.

ART

MASTERING THE ART OF DIGITAL Advantage spoke to Sebastian Fahey, Managing Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Executive Lead for Sotheby’s NFT department about auction trends and the significance of NFTs

In July 2020, Oliver Barker, Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe, ran the first live-streamed global art auction from a purposebuilt studio

Over the past few years, online buyers in both your live and online auctions dramatically increased their appetite to transact at high levels. How do you explain this evolution in behavior?

INTERVIEW Debbie Hathway, IMAGES Courtesy of Sotheby’s

The increase in online bidding and buying aligns with significant longterm developments in the art market. In fact, in recent years, the primary destination for today’s collectors to discover, learn about and buy has moved online. We are living in a period of strong convergence between digital and physical experiences as well as across art, luxury and culture, and are using our expertise to help new and existing collectors navigate this exciting new period. At Sotheby’s, we have dramatically expanded our digital capabilities and reach through cutting-edge auctions live-streamed to more than five million social media followers across our platforms, a more compelling digital catalog and record levels of online sales. Last year marked both a record result and a new chapter in Sotheby’s 277-year history. By offering digitalfirst client experiences and several new sales categories such as NFTs, sneakers and real estate, we attracted a dramatically larger and younger audience even in our most-established categories such as fine art. Confidence in bidding online has reached new heights, and there has

been a transformation in attitudes. Today 93% of our bidders choose to bid online, which represents a seachange in how we at Sotheby’s do business (given the equivalent figure in 2019 was just 44%). At the top level, the majority of collectors are now comfortable bidding on high-value artworks online, driven by familiarity and improvements to technology. The role of the pandemic was certainly part of accelerating this shift from physical to digital. This worked both ways, with our existing clients integrating seamlessly and a whole new generation of collectors discovering just how easy it is to bid and buy at Sotheby’s.

How has the digital transformation changed the auction experience for the bidders and the auctioneers? And how does it bring value? In 2020 and 2021, the huge push to digital allowed us to reach more potential clients than ever before. The rapid expansion of web and mobile platforms and a shift to a hybrid livestream auction format, combined with on-the-ground experiences enhanced with state-of-the-art technology, dramatically expanded access to an unprecedented number of participants. One interesting example of the influx of younger, tech-savvy collectors who made a landmark crossover into purchases of physical works was Alberto Giacometti’s

“Le Nez,” bought by Justin Sun, Founder of the cryptocurrency platform Tron, for USD 78.4 million in November 2021. Our overarching strategy is to make the client experience as smooth and easy as possible. We’ve found that our native clients were much more resilient and flexible and, frankly, technologically adept, and we were able to welcome a slew of clients by live-streaming auctions and making things accessible online. We also expanded the depth of our content and format by doing it virtually. The broad spectrum of material on offer in our salerooms, from skateboards to handbags and NFTs, as well as our diverse range of platforms, provide our clients with unprecedented levels of choice and access.

As the NFT market continues to gain traction, how does Sotheby’s select its NFT lots? And what advice would you give a first-time buyer? For the last 277 years, we’ve kept our finger on the pulse of what’s exciting— like the NFT market. As a global brand, we feel that our place is to create a scaled and trustworthy marketplace where buyers can be confident, as well as to provide specialist expertise, to curate sales, and to shine a spotlight on important artists and works. NFTs have provided us the opportunity to work with a new generation of artists and curators who are creating

truly unique works. This is a space for experimentation in which the possibilities are endless and constantly evolving. Just like everything we do here, we vet the art we offer for its artistic quality and compliance. The rules for NFTs are no different from those we have for anything else we offer. All NFTs featured on Sotheby’s Metaverse or sold via Sotheby’s auctions are carefully selected by Sotheby’s NFT specialists to ensure the legitimacy of both NFT and artist. Sotheby’s works directly with the artists and sellers of each NFT to ensure that the artworks are legitimate and authentic and that they have the right to sell them—all of which can be verified by transparent on-chain data and the metadata embedded in each NFT. We offer all our clients the following basic tips for navigating online sales safely: never share your private key or seed phrase with anybody; never click links sent to you via direct messages on Discord, Twitter or other channels; and never connect your wallet or Metamask to websites sent to you directly.

Can you tell us why NFTs are valuable in today’s market? And why should potential buyers look into them?

30 · Advantage Vol16 2022

We are at the beginning of this fastgrowing category, but the technology is certainly one of the greatest innovations in the art market—both for the art and for the asset. Bringing it back to basics, an NFT allows you to own a unique item, often digital, in a safe and immutable way, so it’s a great technological innovation that enables digital artists to sell and market their work in their native states. Before NFTs, there was no clear way to ascribe ownership to digital art. There was no way to sell and own digital art in its native form. Instead, digital art was often sold as physical prints—not how the artist originally intended their work to be experienced. A great example of this was our sale last year of the original source code for the World Wide Web, directly from its creator Sir Tim Berners-Lee—a historic lot that previously could not have been sold. There is a stronger connection between NFTs or digital art and physical art than most people think, and many of the leading digital artists using NFTs are working in the tradition of minimalist or conceptual artists who are known to the traditional art world. Digital art and NFTs are part of a lineage of art history.

Certain collectors prefer some NFTs to others, as with any other field. For example, different categories of collectors are interested in the early NFTs—historic NFTs from a time when artists were minting in a very experimental way. These are very rare. Others look into the projects with large editions, trying to find the rarest with special traits. Also, there are those who are most interested in the artistic aesthetics, one-offs and very unique works. We see lots of potential for crosspollination: our collectors of physical art are showing interest in NFTs and vice versa. When NFTs really started to take off early this year, we received a flood of inquiries and interest from existing clients. Most of them were curious about and intrigued by NFTs, while others took more convincing. Over time, more traditional art collectors have come to recognize the importance of digital art and NFTs as a growing movement with real staying power.

What is your vision for art in the metaverse? Many believe the metaverse is the next iteration of the internet, combining two key concepts: virtual worlds and an open economy. Based on these two fundamental elements

of the metaverse, users can transact in metaverse goods (NFTs) through Web3 apps (like Sotheby’s Metaverse) and participate in the metaverse. The metaverse represents the convergence of art, commerce, culture, and decentralized technology, unlocking new use cases and industries that thrive in both physical and virtual environments. Sotheby’s Metaverse represents an industry first, as Sotheby’s is the only auction house to build a proprietary, custom NFT marketplace that will serve as a destination for NFT sales at Sotheby’s. Since launching in October

with Natively Digital 1.2, Sotheby’s Metaverse continues to evolve to include a full suite of marketplace features including primary offerings, dynamic auctions, open editions, and capabilities to mint generative artworks. There are also plans to expand our NFT activities even further into areas such as museums and masterworks, luxury and fashion, sports, music and entertainment, and science and technology. We are functioning as an entry point into this emergent new paradigm as a platform for discovering rare and extraordinary digital assets. We will

“Over time, more traditional art collectors have come to recognize the importance of digital art and NFTs as a growing movement with real staying power.”

grow more experiential as we evolve to provide exciting ways for people to create, consign, transact, and collect Web3 works. We have also experimented with other metaverse environments, such as Decentraland, where Sotheby’s created an exact replica of its historic London headquarters that serves as an NFT gallery for those within the metaverse. Above all, the metaverse is an opportunity to be bold, to innovate, to experiment, and to collaborate with tastemakers and artists at the forefront of this category.

Since 1989, Bill Bensley has been designing some of the world’s most iconic hotels, resorts, spas, homes, and palaces

EVOLVING DESIGN Creatively curious, Bill Bensley has spent the past 25 years traveling the world, drawing from his intrepid adventures to inspire his sustainable hotel designs and ventures as a debuting artist

INTERVIEW Debbie Hathway, IMAGE © BENSLEY

Born in California, you took off for Asia soon after graduating from Harvard University. What drew you to this part of the world? And how has it shaped and inspired your life’s work? In 1984, on graduation day at Harvard, I asked my Thai classmate, Lek Bunnag, where he was bound. Singapore was his answer, and as that sounded so very exotic I asked if I could go too. On a lark, I did—and never left. Why would I? Southeast Asia is, in one word, sublime. It is my home for life. I speak the languages verbally and through building. I quickly realized that I was one of few players in landscape architecture in this part of the world, so I had the opportunity to take up space in the field. I was lucky to work with some wonderfully kind people, and word spread…some 30 years later here we are. I am always learning more about Asia. I remain undyingly passionate about this corner of the earth, especially with recent travels to the forbidden Kingdom of Mustang in Nepal…Wow!

What is the starting point from which you begin to draw inspiration for designing new interiors, for example environment/location, people, natural resources, color?

This really varies from project to project. The best thing we can do as designers is create unique experiences and teach people something new through our design. At the same time, I am always reading, watching and listening—keeping an ear out for peculiar people, unusual places and unique stories. That feeds into the process too. Sometimes the oddest discoveries end up becoming the heart of a project, like a hat I found in Paris for the Hotel de la Coupole from MGallery in Sapa, Vietnam. Most importantly, as a landscape architect by trade, I am inspired by the site. So, my task is always to do as little harm as possible!

Growing up on a farm and inspired by John Muir’s conservation work in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, you quickly understood nature’s fragility and the need to protect it. How has your approach to sustainability evolved over the years? As a landscape architect, it has always come naturally to me. The best designs are always those which feel like they have emerged from the soil as easily as the forest has around it. Unfortunately, it has taken a long time for the rest of the world to get on the same page. When I started my

career, sustainability was not on the radar and something people saw as bearing unnecessary extra costs. So, we built sustainable measures into our designs, and they loved them. Gotcha! Over the years, clients have become more and more receptive to sustainability and those who come to us know it’s the medicine they have to take. My dream is to build a hotel made of 100% recycled materials. This fall, I am opening an InterContinental in Thailand where the rooms are upcycled train carriages. We are on the right track, so to speak.

You and your team are on a never-ending quest to create your best work yet. Do you know what it will take? For example, is it a specific design, location, or experience to accomplish that goal? Or have you already achieved it with Shinta Mani Wild? It is described as the culmination of your life’s work… Shinta Mani Wild is definitely the project I am most proud of. It was the hardest to bring to life and is such a big part of me as it is everything I believe a hotel should be. Its purpose is multifold; protecting the Cardamom forests through its existence, offering work to people who otherwise might have been poachers or loggers, and teaching guests all about the

frontlines of conservation so they can spread the sustainability gospel. Shinta Mani Wild will be the first of its kind, and we are starting two wonderful new projects in the Republic of the Congo and Mustang, Nepal, which will follow a similar DNA. Shinta Mani Wild was intended as a model for sustainability and luxury hospitality working together, so seeing it catch on is the dream.

Through the creation of the Shinta Foundation (2004) and partnership with the Wildlife Alliance NGO, Shinta Mani Wild takes action to teach local communities and guests about conservation. What can you tell us about the success of that initiative? And how would you like to encourage readers to contribute to conservation efforts for the places and projects you are involved in?

The key is teaching the people living in and around the Cardamoms that conservation is more valuable than extraction. We created community outreach and environmental education programs even before the camp was built to instill a better understanding of the environment and threats to the Cardamom forests. A community that is educated about its environment will be sustainability prosperous in that environment. We employ 120 people, 70% of whom are from the local village—many are ex poachers and loggers who had no other way of earning before the camp was built as there is nothing out there. They were brought on board to help build the camp, which instilled a real sense of ownership and pride. Then those who wanted to go further in hospitality trained through the Shinta Mani Foundation. Their charm and hard work made our dream of a unique five-star experience in the deep forest a reality. They can receive further

training in Siem Reap through other Shinta Mani hotels, allowing them to become well-paid professionals in a country where such opportunities are few. I am very proud to be a part of that. Unfortunately, teaching people about conservation is a daily battle. Our rangers from Wildlife Alliance continue to patrol every day but there is a definite increase in poaching in the Cardamoms despite China’s ban on illegal wildlife consumption. The thirst is there and in Vietnam. We are doing our best to fight against the poachers. We need all the help we can get by supporting the Wildlife Alliance and Shinta Mani Foundation through their websites and having these conversations with the highflying buyers of pangolin (the most adorable animal in the world) and other precious creatures. They must realize the harm they are doing and be held accountable.

EMBRAER TIP With its generous cabin space and revolutionary interior, the Phenom 300E offers plenty of head and legroom— providing comfort for your travel to Cambodia.

Shinta Mani Wild is a “utopia of sustainability,” and doubles as a research and conservation center. Cambodia is rapidly being deforested, so Bensley’s goal is to get high yield, low impact tourism into pockets of wilderness still standing. Start by ziplining in to the Landing Zone Bar, and take it from there! To book your next journey at Bill Bensley’s properties, visit: shintamani.com

In 2020, you started a new journey in developing your passion for painting, which led to your first art exhibition “Coming Out” held at River City Bangkok (Jan. 28-Feb. 28, 2022). As a new way to express your artistic vision, how does painting complete you as an artist? Yes, the show was called “Love Camp Explore Dreams” and was indeed my coming out as an artist. I see my passion for painting as all-consuming. I start painting in my new glasshouse painting studio in the garden at six in the morning before getting into the architecture. When I am not on the road, I paint 12 hours a day on weekends. On a recent trip to the Republic of the Congo, I sketched all along one of the bumpiest roads I

have ever traveled, which made for a unique effect. It is all a great challenge, and I still have so much to learn to be anywhere near good enough. I am still a bit shocked by the show’s success. All proceeds—more than THB six million— went to Wildlife Alliance and Shinta Mani Foundation.

You may not be a trained artist, but you do have an artistic background—an eye for line, proportion, nuance, caricature, etc., and the skills necessary to create brilliant landscaping and architecture. Do you see a similar artistic approach and sensibility between both worlds? Thank you! I most certainly do. All in all, being an artist is just part of being a good designer. I saw my team

drawing and painting so beautifully and thought I need to do better. Becoming an artist was a bit like my picking up architecture when I was a landscape architect, and then the same with interior design. A designer is a multi-armed machine!

What new stories and insights have you covered in your latest book “More Escapism?” What can fans of your work discover in those 500 pages that they might not already know? Well I can’t tell you or I’ll ruin the surprise! What I will say is it covers 12 of our newest, most beautiful projects, and buckets of stories about each of them that I have never shared before— for good reason! Happy reading…

INNOVATION

THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET The internet has changed the world, and the metaverse looks set to change the internet. Bolstered by the immutable ledger of the blockchain and ubiquitous connectivity, it blurs the lines between the virtual and physical worlds. Creators are gambling that the concept—a convergence of social networking, live entertainment, commerce, gaming, and next-gen hardware—could revolutionize the way we choose to interact, do business and connect with others.

USD

1 trillion In context, Meta’s early investment looks like a drop in the ocean: JPMorgan Chase, which has recently opened a virtual branch of its bank in Decentraland’s Metajuku mall, predicts the market has the potential to reach USD 1 trillion in yearly revenues; Grayscale, which runs the world’s largest cryptocurrency investment fund, touts a similar eventual figure. In its 2021 metaverse report, Grayscale suggests that the revenue from virtual gaming worlds “could grow from USD 180 billion in 2020 to USD 400 billion in 2025,” as well as stating that metaverse virtual world users, while “still in their early innings” have grown tenfold since the beginning of 2020.

Web 3.0 Many predict that rising interest in the concept of the metaverse signals the beginning of the next internet era. Web 1.0 marked our ability to connect to the web, Web 2.0 centers around social interactions and communities fostered by tools such as Facebook, and the Web 3.0 era— also called Web3—may be led by community-driven virtual worlds able to respond intelligently to their citizens and offer a level of personal involvement and ownership like never before. It’s nothing if not a well-worn idea: as far back as 2007, Data Scientist Robert O’Brien defined the web’s third epoch thus: “Web 1.0: Centralized Them. Web 2.0: Distributed Us. Web 3.0: Decentralized Me.”

USD 10

billion

Meta—formerly Facebook—has stated it is “all in” on the metaverse, with its bold name change highlighting its commitment to the concept. Its investment in the metaverse is a pretty big indicator, too: the New York Times reports that the company—which also manufactures Rift virtual reality headsets, which could be a key metaverse driver—spent more than USD 10 billion on its shift in 2021, 10 times what it paid for Instagram in 2012. It is not alone. Major players like Google parent Alphabet, Microsoft, Nvidia, and gaming platforms like Epic Games and Roblox have pledged big investments in their own platforms and tools, and blockchain metaverses like Sandbox and Decentraland are growing fast. 38 · Advantage Vol16 2022

USD

913,000 Ready or not, companies are flocking to stake their claim on prime metaverse real estate. Brands like Walmart, Nike and Disney have all picked up plots in blockchain metaverse environments; Warner Music is building a virtual theme park for concerts on the Sandbox platform, while Gucci is developing a space for “immersive experiences” and sales of digital fashion items. The largest land purchase thus far has been Everyland’s USD 913,000 investment in Decentraland. JPMorgan (a resident of Everyland’s development) suggests that virtual real estate will eventually attract a need for metaverse-based credit, mortgages and rental agreements.

Left page (bottom): In 2021, the virtual blockchain-based world Decentraland hosted the world’s first multi-day festival in the metaverse

Time, Not Place Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says it’s the conflagration of technologies that’s important, not the platform. “A lot of people think that the metaverse is about a place,” he told the Lex Fridman podcast, “but one definition of this is it’s about a time when basically immersive digital worlds become the primary way that we live our lives and spend our time.” The big gamble many businesses now take is on whether that time is truly approaching or whether it has already arrived. It could be argued that the size of the video games market, valued at USD 178 billion as of May 2021, shows the true appetite for immersive digital worlds.

WORDS Alex Cox, IMAGES © Decentraland

Mixed reality The metaverse is a broad concept, and some suggest that we’re already living in it. Ninety-two point one percent of internet users own a mobile device, which has led to the growing use of QR codes which link the physical and virtual. In 2018, 70% of China’s population regularly used QR codes for payment, and statistics show their reach has grown by 96% between then and 2020. Mixed reality and augmented reality applications are growing, with some—like Google’s Lens—able to use AI to interpret real world objects and text and translate them into the virtual world; Google, Facebook and Apple are all accelerating development of new AR platforms for developers.

Left page (top): Decentraland is a 3D virtual world browserbased platform where users may buy virtual plots of land as NFTs

Above: The Crypto Valley Convention Center in Decentraland is a venue that hosts all kinds of live events where organizers can customize the space

Open or Closed? We may not be heading for one metaverse, but many. Already, attention is divided between open and closed environments, with blockchain-focused entities like Decentraland competing with company-led projects like Meta. A controlled, walled-garden approach like Meta’s may benefit brands which are poised to take advantage of it but enforced deplatforming from a single, central virtual world could be devastating for individuals and businesses. An open metaverse, on the other hand, offers the best chance for true community ownership but may lead to chaotic and predatory growth. An undesirable audience or a seedy virtual neighborhood may be enough to deter brands from investing.

USD 50,000 As bullish as Meta et al currently are, the metaverse market is in its infancy. Grayscale’s report shows growth, but also highlights scale; at the end of 2021, blockchain worlds had attracted just 50,000 all-time users. Whether it is, to quote Elon Musk, “more marketing buzzword than reality” or not, the 2016 prediction from Epic Games head Tim Sweeney highlights the potential the metaverse has to change everything—for good or for bad. “This Metaverse is going to be far more pervasive and powerful than anything else. If one central company gains control of this, they will become more powerful than any government and be a god on Earth.” Embraer Quarterly · 39

COMPANY PROFILE

TIME TO FLY Flexjet has expanded into the European market, almost doubled its fleet, and opened a new Tactical Control Center at the exclusive Farnborough Airport just outside of London. We sat down with Flexjet’s European Managing Director, Marine Eugène, to discuss this exciting news, the value of their relationship with Embraer, and what it’s like to be a leading fractional ownership operator.

we’ve had on the service range, cabin comfort, altitude, and noise insulation; it has all been very positive. By choosing the Praetor 600, we’ve distinguished ourselves from our two largest competitors, so it’s a noticeable differentiator.

What can you share about the relationship you’ve built with Embraer over the years and the values that make the collaboration a success?

What makes Europe such an attractive location for Flexjet? And can you explain why more people are flying private in Europe? Europe has always had a population of wealthy people with the means and the need to travel, but private flying wasn’t part of their culture. However, the pandemic has forced a questioning and a repositioning of what it means to use a private jet. As a result, those customers are now approaching it differently and thinking about safety, wellness and time optimization. Today, the commercial airline schedule is still fairly disrupted, and Eurostar is operating maybe half as many trains between Paris and London as it was three years ago. So, the convenience of traveling around the continent is not there yet; it hasn’t recovered. Furthermore, there is also the element of touchpoints. Sitting on a crowded 40 · Advantage Vol16 2022

commercial flight, going through the airport with hundreds of people, using facilities, and so on, it’s a very invasive experience, but flying private protects you from that. The touchpoints are significantly reduced, you choose whom you fly with, and boarding takes 10 minutes; it’s a seamless experience. So, for all those reasons, customers who were hesitant two years ago to use a private jet have all the reasons in the world to use them today.

To keep up with the demand, you added three more Praetor 600s to your fleet earlier this year. Can you tell us what makes this aircraft the right fit for Flexjet? The arrival of the Praetor 600 in our fleet has been phenomenal because it has given our customers access to the most modern aircraft on the market. Everyone knows it’s better to fly a brand-new plane that is super fuelefficient over one that is 20 years old. And, of course, there’s the feedback

Well, I’ll start with the fact that both companies understand the value of relationships. It might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised. Many companies out there operate at the same level in terms of being a leading manufacturer or a leading fractional operator that don’t necessarily have the same approach to old-fashioned relationship management. What I mean by that is our CEOs talk all the time. During the pandemic, when things got worrisome in March 2020, and not a single jet was flying, Michael Amalfitano and Michael Silvestro were on the phone with each other, talking, exchanging, brainstorming, pivoting, and adapting. Not everyone from the manufacturing world necessarily had the same approach. There’s real value in approaching partnerships as a winwin for both sides in the long run, and I think Michael Amalfitano and the team at Embraer understand this well.

Your premium fleet of aircraft coupled with the Flexjet Red Label service provides a

tremendous competitive edge in the market. Can you expand on what makes the Flexjet experience so unique? Our Red Label service has three components: the first is having a modern fleet of aircraft like the Praetor 600. The second is our handcrafted interiors. Most companies try to standardize so that every aircraft looks the same and everything is easily replaceable, but that is not our approach. Instead, we think our private jets should deliver the same experience as checking in to a suite at the Claridge’s Hotel in London or the excitement of receiving your new custom-tailored Bentley. Our customers are used to very high standards, so why would they expect less when stepping on board a private jet? The last component is dedicated crewing. We appoint five crew members per aircraft; if you are a crew member assigned to Praetor tail number X, you will only ever fly that aircraft and never another in the fleet. This model is unique to Flexjet and doesn’t exist with any other operator. We do this because it creates the same awareness, knowledge and expertise that a captain has with his yacht or a driver with his car. So, the crews become emotionally attached to the machine, look after them well and make sure everything is maintained to a very high standard.

Sustainability is top of mind in the aviation industry, and there were many panels at EBACE this year focused on SAF and carbon offsetting. Can you tell me how Flexjet is taking action regarding these challenges?

Honestly, there is a lot more this industry can do to reassure everyone that we are taking responsibility. You cannot claim that we are a clean industry. We burn fuel, and so we have to own and be responsible for what we do. That means buying carbon offsets and going beyond the 100% to do more than what’s necessary. Our level is 300%, three times more than what we emit to make sure we account for the other pollutants besides carbon.

gold standard certified projects. For example, some of our customers are publicly listed and need details they can put in an ESG to show how much they’ve burned and what projects we’ve sponsored as the carbon offset. In response, 4AIR put together a comprehensive report that provided the customer with complete transparency and understanding.

To do this, we use a company called 4AIR, which is also working closely with Embraer (more on page 66). They are like a carbon agency that guides us in calculating what we need to buy to cover at 300%, and they help us channel those funds into the right projects.

Aviation has the power to reinvent itself, which it has done many times in the past. Kenn Ricci, our Chairman who owns Directional Aviation Capital and Flexjet, is also a key backer for the Embraer subsidiary Eve, so as a group we are closely involved. Eve, as you know, is the next new eVTOL vehicle for urban air transport. We’re the launch customer for Eve and have preordered 200. Additionally, to prepare for this next phase, we’ve bought a helicopter company in London and New York to make sure that we learn about rotary operations and heliport management to be ready for when the future of aviation and mobile transportation does arrive.

And this brings me to a second point; our industry needs to be better at reporting. It’s not enough to say you’re carbon neutral. What does that mean? Where’s the money going? What are the projects that are actually being selected? 4AIR takes care of the entire selection process and ensures we only support

What is your outlook for the future of the industry?

or Italian Count Benedikt Bolza, Reschio is a labor of love. There’s not one inch of his Umbrian estate that he doesn’t cherish. For 28 years, he and his wife, Contessa Donna Nencia, have dedicated their lives to restoring and nurturing the ochre-colored ruins, tending the gardens and meadows while raising five children in a crumbling castle. Over the years, Reschio has quietly become an elegant, in-theknow destination for discreet, wealthy visitors who covet the romantic idyll the Bolzas create. How do they do it? Bolza grew up on the property; his father, Count Antonio was an art book publisher and bought his first plot on Reschio in the 1980s. Each year, he added a new parcel of land until, eventually, he owned the whole estate—3,700 acres of farmland, 50 crumbling farmhouses, a tobacco warehouse, and a 1,000-year-old castle. The next challenge was to maintain it. Benedikt, one of Antonio’s five children, qualified as an architect and

got on board. He met Donna Nencia when she came to paint trompe l’oeil and frescoes on the walls. Twenty-five private homes, a 36-bedroom hotel and a design studio later, the creative couple are still innovating. If he can’t find a piece of furniture he likes, Bolza will design it. In 2013, he converted La Tabaccaia, a 1940s tobacco factory on the grounds, into his studio and started his label B.B. for Reschio. Umbria is blessed with a strong network of craftsmen, from carpenters and stonemasons to tile makers, blacksmiths and lighting experts. Everything at Reschio is made not only locally but with local materials such as oak, travertine and marble. “Bespoke furniture was never a luxury,” explained Bolza. “It was simply the natural order of things. When a house was built, furniture was made for the spaces with a perfect sense of proportion. B.B. for Reschio has continued that tradition with every project.”

His aesthetic is an “esoteric mix.” While new pieces are made in the surrounding villages, others come from auction and others are crafted out of old materials found on the estate. “The Reclaimed Standard Lamp is made from the former heating elements in La Tabaccaia, when it was used to dry tobacco leaves,” he said. “And with a building the size of the castle, we were able to acquire pieces that were too large for most other buildings.” B.B. for Reschio bestsellers include The Poggibonsi Light, named after the nearby town, where it was first made in 2012, and the Campaign Bed, an ebonized oakand brass-plated four-poster bed designed for the new hotel. The Corsini Recliner in ebonized beech is inspired by an original unearthed in Palazzo Corsini, the home of Nencia’s family. Much of the art is inherited or from auction, and Bolza has a passion for old portraits.

Above: Blessed with a strong network of craftsmen, everything at Reschio is made not only locally but with local materials

Below: Within the walls of the castle are two interlinked courtyards— one now encased in glass and starting a new life as the Palm Court

Most pieces can be bought directly from La Tabaccaia, where some are on display, but the Count is a talented noble who creates his kingdom with his own hands. Homegrown Reschio produce such as honey, olive oil and wine, are on sale at the Bottega di Reschio shop, alongside Italian garments such as Venetian silk slippers, hand-woven Florentine hats and linen shawls selected by Nencia. Then there’s the renovation of the remaining 22 ruins on the estate. These are sold prerenovation (prices stretch into the millions) and are designed in total B.B. for Reschio style. The Count oversees every detail, from the garden paths to the private swimming pools to the door handles and lighting. Indeed, this is a prerequisite.

“ Bespoke furniture was never a luxury. It was simply the natural order of things. When a house was built, furniture was made for the spaces with a perfect sense of proportion. B.B. for Reschio has continued that tradition with every project.”

Designers from outside are not encouraged. If you want to live at Reschio, you live like Reschio, and while this might sound prescriptive, every villa is very different, thanks to the bespoke approach and the time it takes (upwards of a year) to complete each one. Nature is, and must remain, the foundation of everything done at Reschio; the environment and landscape have been the inspiration for every aspect of the estate. As such, it’s a never-ending project. This summer, a private lakeside cabin opens to hotel guests (private residents have their own cabin on a different lake), and a three-hour foraging workshop gives guests the chance to learn about the healing and nutritional properties of local plants, such as chamomile and St John’s Wort. Later, they can learn how to turn their foraged ingredients into infused, macerated essential oils; try their hand at making natural calligraphy inks or take edible ingredients to Reschio’s cookery school and prepare a feast. Horse riding is also popular. Count Antonio founded the stud in 1999, and Reschio is home to 40 Spanish purebreds. It’s exhilarating to canter through the estate’s vast forests, filled with Mediterranean oak and sweet chestnut, and trot among the olive groves and vineyards. Riding across meadows spotting deer, porcupines, hares, and wild boars is a huge privilege. The Bolzas are aware of this. And it’s why they want to share it.

EPICUREAN

ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY Nancy Silverton, Farmhouse Culinary Ambassador at the Ojai Valley Inn, is one of many celebrity restaurateurs to start a new chapter outside of the city

N

ew York; Paris; London. Watch a film about an ambitious chef, and the plot almost always revolves around their dream of opening a restaurant in one of the world’s glittering capitals. Those films, however, were all made before the pandemic. Since the world reformulated itself in the wake of the virus, the allure of bright lights and an ultra-competitive dining scene has been replaced with the appeal of pretty coastlines, purple and green wine farms, jagged mountains and vegetables you can grow yourself, or mushrooms you can forage from the local woods. Much like the stressed-out executives who moved from slick city apartments to rambling country houses, many of America and Europe’s most notable chefs have—after two years of restaurant closures, a lack of staff and thin profit margins—heard the call of the wild. Or at least the call of the remote town. Freed from hugely expensive rents and with a new appreciative country-based clientele (many of whom have themselves recently left the city), they have not only enjoyed this new pace but developed an innovative new way of appealing to diners. Much of this shift in approach is due to the fact chefs based outside of major cities are able to grow and forage many of their own ingredients and are inspired by the land and the changing seasons. Instead of knowing a particular vegetable or fruit is in season, chefs can see them, taste them, and then change their menus on a daily basis to reflect what is growing in their garden. The same ethos applies to diners, and with the rise of a new healthier approach to eating and a climate-conscious attitude that makes people only want to order food that is grown locally and is in season, countryside dining reflects much of the zeitgeist. Remote hotels are now not only havens for high-end chefs but are attracting the luxury four-day holiday market—the sort of people who might have once jumped on a plane to a foreign country but who would now rather go somewhere rural within driving distance.

The indoor-outdoor Farmhouse at the Ojai Valley Inn, 90 minutes north of Los Angeles, is one of them, and it has been playing host to a revolving cast of high-end chefs. Prepandemic, it was best known as a wedding venue—a place couples were attracted to for the dramatic views, rustic exterior and cosy interior. Luckily, the very things that made it so appealing to brides and grooms make it the ideal spot for a new approach to high-end dining. Earlier this year, Ojai Valley hosted Christopher Kostow, the Executive Chef of California’s three-Michelin-starred paragon of fine dining, the Restaurant at Meadowood. The collaboration was a roaring success, with every dinner Kostow oversaw sold out, including a weekend featuring champagne and wine pairings from Krug and Harlan Estate, a famed Napa Valley producer of Bordeaux-style blends. The owners of Ojai Valley realized that there was a real interest from people who wanted more than just one great meal: they wanted to learn about the entire area; about the domain and nearby wine farms; and they wanted to go home with a new skill after participating in culinary workshops with world-class chefs.

The result was a series of classes and lectures, some of which have been led by Nanc y Silverton, an American Chef, Baker and Author who owns Mozza restaurant in Los Angeles and who has also been overseeing the dining room at the Farmhouse. “I think diners coming out of the city are looking for tranquillity,” she said. “A getaway from the hustle and bustle. A relaxing time. And at the Farmhouse, they will feel tranquil, pampered and very well fed.” Silverton is aware that in the wake of the pandemic, many people are looking for healthy options but she doesn’t think that means scrimping on taste. “Delicious food does not have to be unhealthy,” she said. “Our menus are flooded with vegetables simply grilled. On the other hand, if you are only concerned with healthy eating—no butter, no lobster or rack of lamb, not a lot of salt—then perhaps you should occasionally treat yourself and splurge.” Farm-raised, seasonal food that’s been lovingly put together in a beautiful environment— even the brightest city lights might pale in comparison to that. ith so few places left on Earth existing without human interference, the Spice Islands of Eastern Indonesia hold natural wonder the rest of civilization seemed to have forgotten. Many believe that, despite its size, the world no longer holds undiscovered places. With an entire globe mapped out and visited by the modern world, it’s plausible to think the expeditions of great explorers are long behind us—yet a hidden paradise remains, and it may just be the last on Earth.

Not without irony, the Spice Islands of Eastern Indonesia were once at the center of global trade. Maluku, and its lesser-known neighboring province of North Maluku, fell off the map after having appeared in the 15th century and disappeared in the 16th. At a time in history when spices were more valuable, pound for pound than gold, Ternate, North Maluku’s capital, was a bustle of British, Portuguese and Dutch traders, with medieval

fortresses still standing as testament. But when the spice trade died down, the international traders left, and North Maluku quickly became a forgotten province of Indonesia. Several hundred years later, British-born, but Indonesian acclimatized Natalia Perry set out to explore the most remote islands of North Maluku. Prepared to go any distance and across any terrain required, Perry was serious about her search for an untouched ecosystem “somewhere where we can start again and reimagine a better future for humanity.” After meeting with government officials, she began the arduous journey by boat and foot, arriving in the remote village of Gane Luar in South Halmahera. Over sweet local coffee with the village elders, they told Perry that she was precisely the second person in living history and the fifth in spoken history ever to have visited the village and the islands they looked out to; waters that they had been fishing for hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of years.

Embraer Quarterly · 51

PHILANTHROPY

They gladly told her they would prepare the village’s “best” boat— a battered 11-foot fiberglass boat with broken windows and engines that stopped every few minutes. At nightfall, these fishermen navigate by the stars, and with a skill honed over a lifetime on the water, they have learned to find the faraway islands by sensing the direction of the waves and the temperature of the water, simply by dipping their fingers into the ocean. On this occasion, in the pitch-black dead of night, the boat docked onto a stilted fishing house over the waters of an internal lagoon. After many years of searching, Perry had finally found the paradise she longed to discover. Over the following eight years, Perry and her team dedicated almost every waking hour to securing the very first license of its kind issued in Indonesia; granting her company, Leadership Islands Indonesia (LII), the exclusive rights to conserve and ever so gently develop what has now become known as The Widi Reserve. Careful negotiations that considered the need for local communities to receive skills training and employment opportunities and the desire from the Provincial Government to put North Maluku firmly back on the map, led LII to craft an unparalleled low-density, high-quality, masterplan that satisfied all stakeholders. Now set to become the world’s most sustainable travel destination, The Widi Reserve’s 100 plus coral atoll islands, will have a lighter physical footprint than any other private island destination, touching less than 1% of the land and 0.005% of the entire reserve including a newly established Marine Protected Area. “It’s vital that we keep this place

wild,” said Perry, “and find new and innovative ways to make for a compelling business case that drives revenues whilst, equally, protecting this invaluable ecosystem home to hundreds of endemic, rare and endangered species.” So far, LIIs ecologists and marine biologists have documented 600 species of endemic, rare and endangered species. They are sure that there are many more species yet to be identified, and they are also confident that entirely new species of plants, insects and marine life will be found as more time is spent researching Widi’s ecosystems. With a lack of human disturbance, the islands, namely Widi, have an entirely intact ecosystem from tall virgin rainforests that run into complex mangrove systems, then into coral reefs and finally into drop-offs. To find all parts of this system intact is very rare and for those species who reside permanently there, it provides a complete picture of the animal kingdom’s life cycle.

The Widi Reserve will attract top marine biologists, ecologists, ornithologists (bird experts), and entomologists (insect experts). The Widi Reserve Conservation Centre and Academy will host global experts for specific research missions designed to deepen our knowledge of coral atoll ecosystems and the deep ocean. Guests will have a rare opportunity to take part in leading research programs alongside those experts. Perry is hoping that The Widi Reserve will become the world’s first Blue Special Economic Zone, built around a blue ocean circular and sustainable economic model. “Private islands have never and will never go out of fashion, it’s a childhood fantasy for many. But most private island developments around the world have leaned far too heavily on the natural world that they claim to admire and cherish. At The Widi Reserve there will be no such compromise; we’re going to protect this incredible place for generations to come and use it as a beacon for all those who want to follow suit in other biodiversity hotspots around the world,” said Perry.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

A BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE: ENRICHING STEAM TALENT IN AEROSPACE Academia and industry are collaborating to create transformative programs that immerse students in aviation culture and the STEAM skills needed to be the aerospace innovators of tomorrow

the new U.S. Space Force and companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin and Embraer. “Working for a company that supports and contributes to space exploration is no longer a fantasy of today’s youth, but a viable option in their lives,” commented Bresler.

The current interest in space exploration is stimulating students and industry alike, with rocket launches and new startups in the commercial space economy regularly making front-page news. Aware of the sector’s growing needs, private companies and schools are collaborating to lay the foundation for the next generation of aerospace talent. To help foster interest and engagement, Embraer, the Embraer Foundation, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University have joined forces with three Florida high schools to create an immersive aviation elective course that includes a competition led by Embraer’s design team. Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA) is one of only a few aviation-focused high schools near Florida’s Space Coast and in the country. As a teacher, Joel Bresler has seen several former students make their way into 54 · Advantage Vol16 2022

The program’s facilitators include a mix of engineers and state-qualified Career & Technical Education (CTE) instructors with aerospace teaching experience. During the course, students focus on learning to solve different problems in aerospace and aviation using Fusion 360, a professional-grade computer-aided design (CAD) platform. Additionally, as a multi-year program on Aviation Technical Design, students are challenged to become Autodesk Certified Fusion 360 Users upon completion of the course. Bresler and his colleagues know what an extraordinary opportunity it is to collaborate with companies like Embraer Executive Jets to teach STEAM curriculum using CAD. “It is one thing for a student to build a part for an assignment, but to develop ideas based on a challenge extended from an aviation partner like Embraer, it becomes ‘real’ to the student,” he said. Earlier this year, program participants visited Embraer for “A Day of Inspiration” in aviation. The day included remarks from the Embraer Foundation and ERAU Aerospace Career Academy leadership, tours of the Executive Jets production facility and Engineering and Technology Center, and several interactive presentations from Jay Beever, VP of Embraer

Design Operations, and his team. The day concluded with an introduction to their final design challenge, followed by several handson classroom visits from the Embraer team. The scope of the design challenge includes storyboard ideation, CAD 3D model development and a final sales-pitch presentation to the Embraer design team. Beever and his team quickly embraced this project because of their passion for teaching and inspiring youth. “The benefit of the exercise is to give students a real-world example of how an aerospace manufacturer designs and develops products using the tools and principles they learn in class,” he noted.

Broken into more than 25 teams, the students developed new designs for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles while including the societal benefits and business use case of taking their idea to market.

Business ownership, airport management and unmanned aircraft systems are all promising career paths. Therefore, exposure to technical competencies at an early age enables students to work in any number of STEAM fields as new aerospace and telecommunications technology continue to define future opportunities in aviation and the new space economy,” said Conklin. While there is more opportunity than ever before to work in aerospace, Monica Newman McCluney, Head of the Embraer Foundation admits the onus is on the industr y to expose students to the breadth of opportunities available to them and to peak their interest in aviation through practical experiences. “The field of aviation and aerospace is comprised of a community of professionals who find great reward in the innovation, sustainable solutions and strategic efforts to be inclusive across our industry and the opportunity to work with people who love what they do.”

n his ongoing series, Hegen explores how human intervention with cultivation, water, energy, and land significantly impacts the Earth’s surfaces. Specializing in aerial photography, German-born Hegen uses drones, hot air balloons, helicopters, quadrocopters, and small planes to capture environments from above. His subjects include, but are not limited to, enormous solar power plants, striped industrial flower fields, altered river systems, and colorful engineered salt ponds. Each series reveals intriguing observations. With changing geometric patterns, colors and contrast, Hegen reveals intriguing observations and illustrates the concept of the Anthropocene—a theory that humans have become one of the most significant factors influencing the biological, geological and atmospheric processes on Earth. Hegen’s abstract photographs of manmade structures and altered environments from the air are unexpectedly striking, offering a perspective that some may find profound, like the unbelievable scale of land used to extract, refine and consume resources globally. Beginning his career in classic landscape photography, Hegen pivoted to documenting natural places most influenced by people in a bid to offer insight into the complex and changing relationship between humans and their environment. “I am trying to sensitize the viewer for those subjects by taking a look at the extraordinary forces impacting our environment,” shared Hegen. Hegen has held solo exhibitions in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, South Korea, and China. SPOTLIGHT

SIGHTS SET SKY HIGH Two and a half years ago, Marsha Woelber joined Embraer Executive Jets as Vice President of Customer Support & Aftermarket Sales. We spoke with Woelber about the challenges and triumphs in the most difficult period of the pandemic.

Can you tell us about your role at Embraer and what it means to you? There are two main aspects of my role: Customer Service and Aftermarket Sales. I feel a tremendous amount of responsibility in this role for two reasons. Embraer’s success depends on our customers’ experiences and their confidence in us—providing an exceptional level of service is mandatory. My team is often the interface between our customers and our headquarters in Melbourne, Florida, and we provide customers with 1:1, human-centered support worldwide. Second, Embraer has a huge opportunity to expand our Embraer Executive Care, MRO services and aftermarket modifications to better serve our customers and their needs. My ultimate goal is to continue to provide top-ranked services and undisputed value, and I am very confident in our ability to execute just that and more.

Can you share any recent growth initiatives with us? The tremendous strength of our aircraft sales has provided us with an undeniable need to expand our service network. This topic is an article in itself, but I would summarize with the following: Customer Service: Our commitment to increase the number of field service reps in the U.S. by 50% is almost complete. This relationship is an important part of our customer’s experience, and we are responding to 64 · Advantage Vol16 2022

their requests for more support. We recently doubled the size of the frontline staff in our Customer Care Center in Brazil to improve the frequency and quality of communication from this team. Training: Demand for training simulator space has increased. Currently, a Phenom simulator is planned for Q4 2022 in Las Vegas through our joint venture with CAE and ECTS. We are also actively working with regulators to expand some of the remote training alternatives that were developed during the pandemic. MRO Services: Our customers like to return to the OEM for service, and we will grow our owned network to meet this demand. We are currently growing organically through shift expansion and creation, and we plan to accelerate through growth with M&A this year.

Engineering & Technical Support: Our dedicated team of aftermarket engineers, both in São José dos Campos, Brazil, and Melbourne, Florida, continuously bring new modifications (SBs or STCs) to keep the current fleet updated with the latest and greatest options—helping to improve the residual value of the aircraft. In response to the increasing demand for customized aftermarket modifications, there are signed partnership agreements with thirdparty engineering firms worldwide. Our desire is to provide competitive, innovative solutions in a timely manner.

How do you envision Executive Jets Aftermarket Sales in the near future? Our customer base continues to grow with a notable increase in corporate flight departments. To

address the unique needs of this type of operator, we are developing an additional Executive Care module to allow flexibility in coverage while preserving the great scale we already enjoy. We are adding benefits to the program, including special pricing for aftermarket modifications, which creates undisputed value. There’s an increase in demand for aftermarket modifications in four main categories: aircraft refurbishments, avionics mods (Garmin NXI for the Phenoms), connectivity solutions (Ka-Band for the Praetors), and modifications that reduce pilot workload (predictive/ reactive wind shear). This has kept our sales teams and our MRO network very busy.

What are your major challenges among customers? What is Embraer’s approach to assisting them? The supply chain and logistics environment are very challenging right now, which, at times, prohibits us from providing the level of service our customers deserve and expect. This can cause maintenance delays, unexpected downtime, and generally, frustration. In these scenarios, communication and transparency are critical. We encourage all our customers to plan scheduled maintenance in order to anticipate their needs better.

To recover, Embraer will continue to invest in a level of inventory that outpaces the growth of the fleet to mitigate the difficult external environment and provide available stock for our customers. On a macro level, we are closely working with C-suite executives at our key suppliers and logistics providers to ensure the service levels required in private aviation. We’ve also sent Embraer employees to work on-site at key suppliers to ensure efficiency.

How do you lead your team through challenges? The worldwide pandemic has caused a lot of change for us all and it has driven many consequences like supply chain constraints and labor shortages. Our team is motivated by providing excellent service, but the past two years have been tough. At Embraer, our people are what makes us fly, and their morale has been a key priority for the services and support leadership and myself. By celebrating all progress to keep our teams looking forward, there is resounding energy and commitment from this talented group of individuals right now, and I am honored to be part of the team.

What customer shifts have you observed since the start of the pandemic? How have you adapted your customer support to respond to these changes?

The demand for aircraft is significant, and we are seeing many new buyers of private aviation in both the new and used aircraft market. Approximately two-thirds of our deliveries in 2021 were made to customers who never had an Embraer aircraft before. New customers typically need more education as they become accustomed to their aircraft and doing business with us. We’ve responded by allocating special training resources to make their onboarding as seamless as possible. In 2022, our customers are much more focused on health, safety, security, and overall seamless travel, driving continued strength in our key measure of activity and flight hours. Compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic), flight hours in 2022 have increased by 30% thus far.

Do you think that the pandemic has fastened digitalization acceleration at Embraer? Can you elaborate on any new initiatives? The impact of the pandemic has changed the supply/demand economics of our industry. With more flying private than ever before, the demand is significant. Supply is constrained due to factors already discussed. We are launching two innovative digital products this year to improve our customer experience. Beacon: Traditionally, tracking the progress of a maintenance event involves many different stakeholders holding one piece of the puzzle to fix the aircraft. A customer would need to call multiple points of contact for the vendor, for the OEM, for the part, for the corrective action—each contact requiring a separate email or phone call. Beacon brings all those different pieces into a communication platform built for the digital age. Smart Troubleshooting: This AIbased solution brings together the fault isolation manual, field tribal knowledge, and engineering lessons learned to provide faster aircraft fixes, increase fleet availability and improve maintenance efficiency. VALUES

EMBRAER COMMITMENTS In May, Embraer announced 25 hours of complimentary carbon-neutral flight hours through its partnership with 4AIR for new Embraer customers who enroll in its Embraer Executive Care program—offering the opportunity to offset carbon emissions during the first year of ownership. Following the completion of 25 flight hours, Embraer customers will have the opportunity to continue their commitment to fighting climate change by participating in various 4AIR programs. Through this partnership, business jet customers are incentivized to

make their own sustainability commitments by maintaining a 100% offset of carbon dioxide emissions, increasing their commitment to becoming emissions-neutral, reducing emissions through operational changes, or using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). At no cost to the customer, Embraer and 4AIR’s complimentary carbon offsetting program provides the opportunity to have a tangible impact on climate-changing emissions and achieve our carbon neutrality target by 2040, thus supporting the industry’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As an industry leader, Embraer is committed to pioneering new technologies and developing long-term climate solutions for a better future. Offsetting carbon emissions is vital in continuing our sustainability journey as we strive to reach our 2050 net-zero carbon emission goals.
