Effective passive design strategies in achieving thermal comfort with the local climate in Sekeping Serendah.

Location • Malaysia • Serendah (North of Kuala Lumpur) • Near to 2 Orang Asli villages. • Forest Retreat

Malaysia

Local climate Tropical Rainforest Climate • Malaysia is located in the equatorial region • being hot and humid throughout the year • The average rainfall is 250 centimetres (98 in) a year • the average temperature is 27 °C (80.6 °F)

Thermal Comfort • the condition of mind that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment and is assessed by subjective evaluation (ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55). • Someone is not feeling either too hot or too cold.

Factor that effecting thermal comfort

Environmental Factor • Humidity • Air Movement • Air Temperature • Radiant Temperature

Personal Factor • Clothing Insulation • Metabolic Rate

Review from visitors

Research Questions • Question 1: What is passive design strategy? • Question 2: What are passive design strategies adopted by Sekeping serendah in the local climate. • Question 3: What are the effect of orientation and open layout of the sheds in Sekeping Serendah to contribute to thermal comfort? • Question 4: How the materials are implemented in passive design strategy of Sekeping Serendah in achieving thermal comfort? • Question 5: Comparison of the different materials used of Sekeping Serendah in its site feature with the other building.

Research 3 types of shed • Timber Shed • Glass Shed • Mud Shed

Passive Design Strategy

• Different passive design approach to achieve the thermal comfort on each of the sheds.

Passive Design Strategy-

use ambient energy sources instead of purchased energy like electricity or natural gas. These strategies include daylighting, natural ventilation, and solar energy.

• Design based upon local climate considerations • Attempts to regulate thermal comfort within the building • Maximizes and promote passive ventilation

3 major passive design strategies • Building orientation • Building design • the choice of building materials.

Building Orientation • Southwest Monsoon and Northeast Monson • Suitable orientation for the two monsoon the direction of the prevailing wind • The placement of openings are affected and orientated accordingly to allow the wind to enter the shed

Building Placement and Orientation • Strategically placed under dense canopy of the forest • Avoid direct sunlight exposure(light via diffused light)

Building Orientation • Glass façade of the glass sheds and terrace are orientated away from East and West direction. • Louvers are integrated into the shed.

Building Design • Open layout design • Open interior space with minimal partition allow good ventilation in the house.

Timber Shed and Glass Shed • Infusion of vernacular architecture elements. -Raised on stilts -Overhang -Ventilation through roof joint

Mud Shed • Floating roof design

• Cross Ventilation is facilitated via openings on all sides of the wall • Excellent air and air exchange during day and night time.

Choice of Materials • Glass , Timber and Mud • The pairing of materials in each theme of shed Timber: Timber and Brick Glass Shed : Glass and Steel Mud: Mud and Glass

Each of the paired material are operated in mutual complementation of each other’s shortcomings • Timber Shed Timber -High thermal insulation -Low thermal mass Brick -High thermal insulation -High thermal mass

• Glass Shed

Glass provides aesthetic properties as well as being abke to reflect some of the solar radiation of sun.

Glass -High thermal insulation -Low thermal mass Steel -Low thermal insulation -Low thermal mass

• Mud Shed Mud -High thermal insulation -High thermal mass Glass -High thermal insulation -Low thermal mass

Conculsion

• the passive design strategies in the sheds of Sekeping Serendah are applied well to achieve thermal comfort with the factor of heat gain while maintaining the openness design concept in this local climate condition.
