STUDENT NAME: NG MING HWEE STUDENT ID: 0319511 TUTOR: MR. ANGUS DATE 10.03.2017
JJ.PAN Architects & Planners is an architectural and planning form dedicated to providing creative solutions in the design and planning of human environments. The firm combines a proven track record, advanced education, talented design capability, diversified technical experience, and a wide range of professional, teaching and research backgrounds into a comprehensive, world-class service package for clients in Taiwan and from around the globe. JJ. Pan & Partners was founded in 1981 by Mr. Joshua Jih Pan. It has the subsidiary companies at Taipei, Shanghai and Xiamen. The company is more to some of the big scaled building and some public building. The architectural profession is the integration of a wide range of expertise including building design, urban planning, interior design, landscape design, structural engineering and construction supervision. All department has been divided in to small teams to handle the different projects. Here below are the following projects that I have participated in: 1. Ardentec(Nanjing) Semiconductor Testing Factory, NanJing, China At the beginning of my internship, I have given a task to modify staircase construction drawing in auto cad. As this is a China project, all the architectural stuff will follow their country rule. I am using a software which is similar with auto cad but its call ‘Tian Zheng’ and it was created by China. There has something different with auto cad that I used to use but it has more function and more convenient for cadding drawings. Through the revision, I realized that data and number is very precise and important for the structure and work drawing. There has some nationally dimension by law or the dimension that they put generally in the structure. My colleague has guided me to draw a proper drawing in between the different from China and Taiwan. I realized how important of each line in the construction drawing. Previously, I have no idea of the line in my drawings as they are just only from my imagination even though I knew what it supposed to be. My supervisor also taught me about some steel construction knowledge and identify the meaning of each line. After the work, I had learnt that every single line I draw is the object that represent every component and the part of the building construction. For example, I was doing the steel construction staircase in details drawing. I have better understanding on how each floor is linked together. If each floor encounters a different beam, it will require a different connection method as well. The floor and landing have the different way of connection with their own reason. At the same time, I have learnt that how to consult and design a building with the neat and tidy way. Some redundance part or messy pipeline can be avoid or hidden. After modifying the elevation, I began to draw the plan of each floor. I have learnt some of the rules of staircase as well as enhancing my auto cad skill. There are some shortcut key and command function to let me deal with some more quickly.
Even though I have adjusted the size of staircase for several weeks, I have a great harvest is my idea of the architectural beauty become more mature. Comparison on the use of pencil lines painted a very beautiful painting, the performance of the mathematics is more beautiful because the ultra–complex structure can be performance through the number. It became compact and beauty, strong and powerful. The caring on the prescribed size of the building is very important as it makes the building become real.

After cad work, I was in charge of the design on outside boundary wall, guardhouse and the entrances in 3d model. Before starting the design, I have read the brief that prepared by my colleague. Through the introduction and analysis, I have known the purpose of the building, environment site context, and what my company did the design concept of the building. From here, I know how a company prepare the presentation to introduce a building. I started to think about the movement of the vehicle, the layout planning of the fence and entrances, the economic choice of design boundary wall and so on by sketching. For the design of the guardhouse, although it was a small area but I learnt how to design the layout of the pantry, washing room and waiting area into one and achieve the best results. In this project, the design of building and the owner’s trademark design is closely related. The different interpretation methods between blue and red in the design is very fresh to me. The biggest challenges in this project for me is the consideration of color use, the proportion and the alternation of color to express the design concept and make them in a good result. For the entrance, I tried to use the application of structure design that I have learnt before. And also I have to meet the same consideration of the size, material and the connection method problem. I was appreciated that my company gave me an opportunity to learn and touch on SKETCHUP as I was not familiar with it before. After 3D modeling, I printed out some entrance perspective view and discuss with our company’s landscape designer. I got in touch on the landscape design after discussion and learnt how to present our work in smart. Throughout this project, I realized that rendering is not focus on realistic instead of the feeling of expression is more important. Moreover, I have learnt a new software, RENDER IN which is very convenient and efficient in rendering. And my photoshop skill was improved as well.

2. NTUST XinZhu International Academy and Dormitory Compeitition, Taipei Taiwan I had joined the beginning of the compeitition. In this project, I am assisting them in making model. Although I just helped some simple mass model but this is my first time to use the all new things like the cutting form board machine, spray glue and paint. I had learnt the techniques that how to complete a model faster and more beautiful in smart work. On the other hands, I also attended their meeting as well. How these senior colleagues present their works effectively in the presentation and the way of their thinking, the skill of design from macro view slowly cut into the small range, it is very near]t and mature, it really makes me benefits a lot. In addition, I had leant how they applied the massing model that I did to think about the organization and scale of the space. Through the meeting, I know that the cooperation and attitude of the team is very important. Designing a building is not happen on a person, we should seek the resources and ask for helps from the experienced people is more efficiency rather than hard work.

3. Chiayi Machouhou Factory, Chiayi, Taiwan It was a building submission construction drawing. I helped to draw the boundary wall and guardhouse in auto cad. Through this project, some of the derails drawing and knowledge of the construction has a further understanding. This is a Taiwan construction project, so this time I have learnt more about the Taiwan law in the connection and so on. This time, I was helping out with the ceiling application detail drawings. The ceiling material and finishes at the different space need the different application and they had their specific expression. However, I had learnt how to output the drawing and what we should take noted before printing it out. My cad skill has a great improvement and more flexible.

4. Others Site Visit- Taoyuan Airport MRT line This is my first site visit with my company. Although this project has been completed and I did not participate in their previous work but I still have gain something during the visit. This MRT line has been used for many years to complete as it encountered a tender issue, construction problems and operational problems. From here I have a brief understanding of the long process of development. The first sixth stops of MRT were designed by our company. However, the first stop of the MRT will be a symbolic building, which is a project that my company works with a Japanese architect. Although the building has not yet been built, I have a brief idea from my colleagues about the concept of the building and the relationship between the surrounding buildings. From this site visit, I found that Taiwan architecture has a feature which is they like to use the structure as a part of design. I have learnt how they plan and arrange a space in the big scale MRT station to manage the movement of crowd, how the light cooperated with the environment to match the theme. The elevator here is also a focus attention. Because of the existence value of this MRT station and indoor placement advantages, it was able to build with transparent glass material. Hence the transparency will not block the visualization of the space. From here, I also have learnt about the contact, construction of the elevator. I am pleased to have the opportunity to attend this site visit. During the visit, I have not only saw a lot of pleasant scenery in Taipei through the MRT Line, I have some sentiment because of the reaction of senior colleagues who are involved in the MRT project, they all are very excited when visit their completed work. Architectural design is a long life, the enthusiastic people find pleasure in it. Site Visit- Esunbank Building, Dormitory of Chung Yuan Christian University These buildings were also almost completed and I were only visit their outcome and have benefited a lot. During the visit, I found that I am unfamiliar with the color used in the interior or even the exterior of the building. Although lecturer usually do not encourage us to use color to express a building but the design of these visit building were using color to express their concept well and match perfectly with the color tone. This is how the well-known architect, Richard Rogers’s work always have the design by using color. They are mature in application of color and materials, so that the environment of the space speak well and make people feeling comfortable. These buildings have their different user group and different requirements. From here I know that construction company and owner has the great relationship between the funds. If we can cooperated a good construction company, the construction of the building will be better. For example, I went these two building and observe their staircase, I found that one of the construction of the staircase is very neat and tidy and the other one are more careless on this. Taiwan is very encouraged on the green building. In the visit, I know more about the importance of landscape design, the arrangement of each tree to make the building more attractive and lively. In addition I have learned how design a multi- function space, they will think about the future use
of the space and make proper arrangements, or consider the different functions of the space in different times, the space became elasticity. Through the site visit, I have learnt that if we have understanding of the smallest unit space, we can effectively use the space, it will not blindly pursue the large scale and useless space. As an architects, they need to visit the site frequently to do the supervision and inspection work. Their arrangement of time is very important as it is likely to affect the waste of material, money and time during the construction.
In the nut shell, I have benefited a lot from this internship experience in Taiwan. I have learnt different language of vocabulary. I have not only learnt the architectural law of Taiwan and also China. Even though, I did not really communicate with the clients but I have heard the conversation and discussion of the senior colleagues with the clients in the office. It lets me know more about the responsibility of my future work. I think the benefits of the internship is not just about the technical parts, I have a depth understanding on the architectural career and the important of a teamwork. I am appreciate that my company gave me a good learning environment and opportunities, so I am able to have a well prepare in architecture field before I graduate. I am really grateful that I have this rare opportunity to undergo my internship in Taiwan, this cross-international experience gave me a great inspiration.
