2019 State Line Heritage Days
Fun Time for Everyone! By Leesa Friend News Gazette Publisher The entertainment schedule is great, the variety of food and drink vendors are endless, there are raffles for the big prizes, flea markets, antique tractor displays, photo contests, a corn hole tournament and a car show included in what is Union City’s biggest festival of the year. The State Line Heritage Days are here again. August 1-3 will be here before we know it and this year’s three day summer festival offers a great op-
portunity for everyone to have a good time. Kicking off the festivities, with what better name, is the annual Kickoff Luncheon to be held on Wednesday, July 31 at the Union City Elks Club. The much anticipated “Farmer of the Year” award will be announced at the annual event. One of the most anticipated attractions to this year’s festival is the addition of rides. The SLHD committee is bringing Chicketti Family Amusements to Union City to have rides at Railroad

In it’s earliest version, this summer festival was called Farmer Merchant Days. Beginning in 1986, volunteers would put together the biggest and best festival in Union City. Drawing crowds from far and near. Annually, they host a kick-off luncheon, inviting the public to come in and see what that year’s festival is going to bring. But that is not all that is in store for those who attend the hour long event. The recipient of the coveted Agri Business of the Year Award is announced to those attending. Better known in its early years as the “Farmer of the Year Award”. The award has been sponsored by Jackson Township Farmer John Fraze for now 33 years. Fraze’s history with the award dates back to the first year of the festival.

The list includes farmers with large operations and those with smaller acreages, crops-only and those with livestock. Two veterinarians were also among the list of winners. Getting the name of the recipient isn’t always the hardest task about the job of naming a winner. Sometimes getting them out of the fields or barns and into a mid-day lunch is the biggest challenge. Over the years, a few sneaky and tricky moves have had to be made in order to get the winner there. Who will be this year’s recipient? Watch for the 2019 award winner to be announced in an upcoming issue of The News Gazette. See any SLHD committee member for luncheon tickets.
