the country: a safe and well-funded bank, they had capital of $3 million! The Percival Plow and Stove Company in Merrickville sold just what they said: stoves that burned wood and coal for cooking and heating in the home, and good Sulky Plows, Walking Plows and Gang Plows too. In 1908, residents of Merrickville could buy three linen handkerchiefs for men for just $1 at E. H. Tallman’s store, “The Peoples’ Store”. The Corporation of the Village of Merrickville had spent $247 in 1908 on salaries, and $2,259 on roads and bridges! The total expenditures for the year had amounted to $12,259.69; but that was fine, because the corporation had received taxes from residents of $6,630, and the debt carried by the Village was just over $4,000. Ah, those were the days! There was a full page notice in the 1912 Christmas newspaper in Kemptville that remains valid and helpful to this day. It said: “Patronise Your Own Home Store: Help yourself; but at home, and build up Old Eastern Ontario”. We can only echo that thought today: Help Yourself: Buy at Home. The advertisers in this newspaper are local and deserve your support. Think of them when you buy your Christmas presents this year, and throughout the rest of the year too! So, we hope you enjoy this Christmas Special for 2018, and remember that we are inheritors of those who came before, a wonderful history and tradition that we have to pass on to future generations who will read, perhaps one day, about the simple life the people of North Grenville and Merrickvile-Wolford lived away back in 2018.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone in North Grenville and Merrickville-Wolford! This year, we’ve put together a mix of the old and the new. Drawings from young school children around the district, alongside historic photographs from Kemptville and Merrickville going back more than a century, but all coming from the Christmas season. We often imagine that we deal with issues unknown to earlier generations, but a look at the way we celebrate Christmas, as well as some of the headlines from the newspapers of old, can prove us wrong. In 1968, there was a report in the newspaper about a survey about the use of...pot! It refers to John Turner, then Minister of Justice, talking about the best way to deal with marijuana users “until the law is changed”. It only took 50 years! One thing that has changed is the price of groceries. As you shop for your Christmas turkey and supplies, think about the advertisements from the IGA in Kemptville, run by Keith Beveridge and Ken Haggett, the original B&H. Turkeys were 45¢ per pound, smoked hams from 58¢ per pound. A 2-lb packet of macaroni or spaghetti cost all of 28¢, and a 10 lb bag of potatoes could be had for 39¢. Sam Lecker was selling a 50 lb bag for just $1.19 on Prescott Street. You could get a good two-year old car from Johnston Motor Sales for around $1,500, and that included two snow tires, a new battery and licence plates for 1969. Not a bad deal. Back in 1907, the Union Bank had offices in Merrickville, Kemptville, and all across
Many and huge thanks to all of our advertisers, both in this section and throughout the year that’s past. This newspaper would not exist without you all. Thanks also to the North Grenville Historical Society for all of the historic photos and content from days gone by. All blessings and joy to all of you from all of us. Merry Christmas!

Once upon a time, North Grenville and Merrickville-Wolford was like this: trees being cleared to make farms, settlers earning money in winter in the lumber camps. This photograph appeared in a local newspaper back in 1911. (Courtesy of the North Grenville Historical Society)
