RIBBON
SITE PLAN
SCALE : 1/2000
RIBBON - a extension to the existing Art museum.
The main access will be in the junction of the axis from Metso and the axis view from the Pyynikintori Market Square.
The concept develops from the initial feeling at the site - as a small, open park in between building blocks. Most of the surrounding buildings are residential apartment. While the Pirkankatu street goes on front of the site and the other side is Pyynikintori market square, which is well-known for the quite heavy traffic, on the back side of the Museum, the Amuri museum and the pedestrian route are quiet with slow movement.
All the public function on the ground floor are flexible with moveable transparent polycarbonated cladding.
The new extension steps back from the busy street and creates a open theater in front of the building. This open theater can be served as a open cinema during the summer for the surrounding residents. On the other hand, it reduces the noise from the traffic to the museum.
The visual connection between the old Museum to the visitors will be partitially remained.
This museum is not only a place for Art works , but also a communal space with terrace cafe and restaurant. People can reach the museum from the pedestrian walk from Metso. The connection between the old museum and the new extension will be glass box. It provides space for public forum during the winter. The shape of the museum derives the curve of Moomi character - a friendly image to children. On the other hand, I want to develop the feeling of going up and around the ramp like a walk to discover the dark - semi light- light exhibition spaces. The flow of movement is one of the main concept from the beginning.

How to involve the existing residents to the new museum? -1.000 My solution is the open theater and also the remaining park-atmosphere in front of the new museum. So on, the residents can enjoy their park in a new way. They will have chance to get involved in the artist activities. The open theater can be a good way to propagand the story of Moomin Valley with some lighting design during the night. The commuters along the Pirkankatu can be curious and stop by to visit the Moomin Valley, if they have never known about this character. Otherwise, the open theater wil operate more freely than the official working hours of the museum. It will extend the night life story of the museum. The new museum - a white printed concrete ribbon - will be a new structure - totally contrasts to the existing brick. It’s like a conceptual forest growing up around the old brick.
Which kind of image the new museum will be?
The main hall entrance with the glazing openning on the roof will be spacious and full of sun-light. However, the exhibition spaces still have close and dark space - as a critical requirement for exhibition space. The mixing between the dark and the semi-light exhibition space, as well as the higher and the close level will bring different viewpoints to the visitors. The running ramp connects all the exhibitions is a like a stairway - half in the close and dark concrete and half in the spacious openning. The change of feeling states will start from the very first beginning of the visiting journey.

The new extension - as a white ribbon - attach to the existing brick building. The white contrasts with the old red colour. The birch pattern resembles to the birch forest background for the art exhibition. The polycarbonate is partially transparent, it allows the indirect light into the indoor lighting. In the other hand, from the Pirkankatu street, people still see a part of the old Museum.
