GROUP WORK Intro / Research Interpretation
As a group, we look at Fischli & Weiss, a Zurich-Âbased couple collaborators from 1979, on how they work and execute their ideas. We will document the research and our practical developments in a creative ZD\ ZKLFK ZLOO UHĂ HFW RXU understanding of the information we have found. They have won awards for their work, for example for their ‘Questions’ piece they won a Golden Lion prize in 2003 (show images in presentation). Their piece called ‘How to work better’ from 1991, was painted RQ WKH ZDOO RI DQ RIĂ€FH EXLOGLQJ for the channel 4 ‘The big Art project’ (show images in the presentation) Their work has a playful theme throughout, and they seek to amuse their audiences as well as doing the unexpected;Íž and by doing so they allow their audience to see things in a different perspective, for example
using unrelated everyday objects to create a sculptural piece. There work as been compared to that of Marcel Duchamp, Dieter Roth, and Jean Tinguely, who use everyday objects to make something new e.g. sculpture. They are best known for the their Ă€OP FDOOHG Âś7KH ZD\ WKLQJV JR¡ LQ 1987‌. $W Ă€UVW ZH ZHUH DOO FRQFHQWUDWH more on how we can reproduce the work of Fischli & Weiss. We simply look at the representation of their work which were mostly sculptures, installations and chain reaction machines. After a few tutorials, we discover their PHWKRGRORJ\ ZH Ă€QDOO\ Ă€JXUHG out that their work isn’t simply an inspiration from another artist. They want to go against the ready made objects, the mass production. Fischli & Weiss create their work by taking other’s work, change the media, materials as well as mode of productions. Emphasising on the “behind the
scene and on the sequence, they shows that there are different source but it is pretty much the same approach by shifting the formula. This is when we ignite the idea of shifting the formula as the a way to present Fischli & Weiss work and background in our presentation. And as for our artefact, we will use their method of changing the media, materials and mode of production. We decide to look at some humorous artist hence try to reproduce their work principles in our way.

In the end, we only get help from our peers in uni and some other students. It is interesting to know what are they scared about, their IDFH ZRQ¡W EH ÀOPHG RQO\ their voice will be recorded. One more thing that interest me is people take really long to say what they wish for, it is like they afraid they would be judge later for what they say. Either they don’t really know what they want or
they just simply scared of saying their simple thoughts and want to be known as something more intellectual. A lot of them wish for world peace, health and happiness for everybody but it sure took them a while to think about it.
ARTEFACT & EVALUATION
After looking at several artists’ work like illustrator Rolf Harris, Andy Riley, multimedia artists John Wood andPaul Harrison, etc., we decide to choose the work “Before I dieâ€? by Candy Chang. Instead of a painted wall with printed phrase “Before I die I want to‌â€?, we changed the medium to voice recording. Keeping the fun anonymous part of it. We changed the Ă€UVW YHUVH RI WKH VHQWHQFH WR “I wishâ€? then make a short clip with the phrase written on paper. The funny thing about the
INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE Research / Initial Ideas
Andy Riley is a cartoonist and scriptwriter from Britain. Kevin Cecil. They have won two BAFTAS, for the sitcom Black Books in 2005 and the animated special Robbie The Reindeer in 2000. They created and wrote the sitcoms The Great Outdoors and Hyperdrive for the BBC, and Slacker Cats for the ABC Family Channel. Their Radio 4 panel game, The 99p Challenge, won a Sony silver award.
Andy is originally from Aylesbury but now lives in London. He used to be the stage dancer for The Pod, Julian Barratt’s comedy techno band which was the forerunner of The Mighty Boosh. Bunny Suicide. Rabbits. We’ll never quite know why, but sometimes they decide they’ve just had enough of this world- and that’s when they start getting inventive. The Book of Bunny Suicides follows over one hundred EXQQLHV DV WKH\ ÀQG HYHU more outlandish ways to do themselves in. From an encounter with the business end of Darth Vader’s lightsaber, to supergluing themselves to a diving submarine, to hanging around underneath a loose
stalactite, these bunnies are serious about suicide. Illustrated in a stark and simple style, The Book of Bunny Suicides is a collection of hilarious and outrageous cartoons that will appeal to anyone in touch with their evil side. As I have researched, in 2008, a mom in Oregon strongly disagree with the circulation of the book in her 13 years old son’s school library. She said the content is not appropriate for children section even though it might be funny for the adult shelf. Also, in Shanghai, China, a bookseller pulled it after reports that several children had attempted suicide, with at least one boy dying.
suicide into a video of physical object. In his work, he illustrate many ways how a bunny can kill himself, as they are drawings, it can go as far as your imagination can go. I plan to use soft stuffed toys to replace the bunny and use daily life materials as “killing tools”. The death of the bunny can be just anything, including, drowned, burnt, cut up…. I don’t want to put this representation into
a violence way, the purpose of the video will be merely for humorous entertainment like what Andy Riley’s aiming for. I will attempt to make my own bunny with the soft toy making kit, and may be buy some toy tools for my physical scheme.
ARTEFACT & INSPIRATION
I want to base on the idea of shifting formula plus changing media, materials and mode of productions to be my methodology to represent Fishli ad Weiss style’s affection in my work. Through out the research that me ad my group mates has done, I want to choose Andy Riley and his work “Bunny Suicides” as a base to work on. I was thinking of recreate his drawing principle of how a bunny can

EVALUATION Personal Opinions & Outputs
As I have mentioned in my research, the age rating for the content of the video is very important. I do not want to mislead it to a violent direction. Soft toys are like friends with kids, seeing your stuffed toys being tortured isn’t a very pleasant scene. Therefore, I chose a different medium which is paper origami. Being my personal interest, making origami rabbit became even more interesting for me. More over, paper are easier to deal with in term of when you apply a certain affect to it, it will show some sort of reaction (like burning, soaking in water, cut up, tear apart,…). As a result of not wanting to
have bloody scene, I used plastic tools, among with materials like shoes, balls to set up the “killing” scene. All the scene are taken from a daily life background, no further effects are added. There is a limitation in the way to destroys a paper bunny. In the cartoon, Andy draw bunny illustrations so he can go as far as he can imagine (airplanes, weightlifting, etc.). As for my work, I can change the size RI P\ EXQQLHV WR ÀW LQ FHUWDLQ situations but the materials are quite limited. Slightly different from the Book of Bunny Suicides, there is actually someone who kills the bunny, not the bunny to suicide
itself. Hence, I want to name my video, Bunny Assassinations. There is one scene in the video where I want to pass on the message against mass smoking where a paper bunny got burned from smoking too many cigarettes, implying people can die from too much smoking.
