director’s statement

Director

Le Lam Vien I believe that we all have to face marriage at some point in our life, or at least that’s how it is for us Vietnamese. To me, I can see it coming very close, and I can’t help but feel terrified. Vietnamese weddings can be described as absolute chaos. Nobody really knows what to do, the traditions only remain as remnants, and every family has their own way to do things. It doesn’t matter how hard people plan for it, things can always unfold in the most unexpected way. Sometimes, it can be dramatic, thrilling, or confusing, but also romantic. Our modern culture brings an incredible rhythm in the midst of all the disarray, making

Vietnamese weddings always a source of excitement. “10 to 11” is a glimpse of an intense ten minutes of a wedding ceremony. As entertaining as it can be to some, this is my worst nightmare. When it all comes down to the day where it all matters most, what if it all goes wrong? The entire film will be told using one continuous shot. Ambitious but I believe this is the best way to immerse the audience in this unique atmosphere, which can be so overwhelming and yet extremely eye-catching. Trying to visualize my wedding anxiety, I can see that it all comes down to one ultimate question: “Is it worth

it in the end?” I guess nobody can answer that except the bride and groom. “10 to 11” is an important project cause the subject and film take place in a crucial part of my personal journey. I myself am on the verge of marriage, however, I am also more driven than ever to pursue my future as a feature film director. That is why I chose this subject matter for my upcoming films. ‘10 to 11’’ will give viewers a striking insight to some of the mayhem and dysfunction I am experiencing now. Though pressure is looming, I look forward to the stories and memories my films and own marriage will bring.
