WA L L S Architecture Core Studio III, 2016 Instructor: Calvin Chua You Jin This project aims to challenge the convention of urban living in cities such as Singapore by presenting an alternative way of living through architecture. Located right beside Farrer Park MRT, the district is rather dense with buildings housing different programmes, leaving limited open spaces in the area. With the aim to open up the plot to increase the amount of open spaces, this project includes multiple levels of open spaces inserted in-between residential units to encourage interactions. Concept of dwelling differs from one individual to another. Different people have different needs and wants in his own house. Thus, instead of providing a fixed plan for different types of people to live in, the concept of a ‘house’ will be reduced to ‘a combination of rooms’. Breaking up the normal convention of a house, a room can be considered as a house as long as it suits the individual’s needs. As a result, interaction and circulation spaces are created in the center. Shear walls are used to demarcate the spaces and the rest of the walls are flexible so users are able to combine rooms or change the configuration based on their needs.

concept d ia gr a m A house is no longer a fixed type with specific number of rooms but rather a distinct combination of rooms with varied functions chosen by the indvidual himself.

The configurations of the shear walls adopt similar patterns on all three types while the partition for the rooms are individually crafted to suit the needs of different family sizes. All the types have communal areas on the outside of each rooms to promote interaction between the neighbours.

H O U S E A N D N AT U R E Architecture Core Studio III, 2016 Instructor: Calvin Chua You Jin Small pleasures in life are mostly associated with nature; like waking up to sunlight and greenery, listening to the sound of rain fall in a sheltered room and taking a stroll in a park. I aim to bring these overlooked pleasures back to the normal HDB block where most Singaporeans reside in. The house has an open plan with no solid walls. The exterior envelop is offset inwards to create a border of garden surrounding the space. Organic-shaped glass walls of varying heights became the threshold between the exterior and interior of the house. The private areas are separated from the public area by curtains as a form of screening device, from the other users in the house, as well as outsiders. Each garden is also carefully placed to serve as a private or a public garden. Dividing the double volume space into floorplates of different sizes encourages the visual connectivity to the gardens, making the whole interior space to feel like islands in a forest.

LINES Architecture Core Studio II, 2016 Instructor: Yvonne Tan Su Zen This project asks for a design of a satellite SUTD building in the intersection of Bras Basah, Orchard, Prinsep and Handy Road. The building houses various programmatic functions such as flexible event spaces, lecture theatre, classrooms, cafe, and exhibition spaces. Using light as the inspiration of the project, lines are used as the tool to investigate the relationship between light and shadow and the effect it has on spaces created. These lines are translated through rules that governed the whole project. Having an open plan with a minimal amount of doors, the lines are used as a source of demarcation between spaces. The varying distances between the lines also create interesting play on visibility.

F L OAT Architecture Core Studio I, 2015 Instructor: Jackson Tan This project asks for a space for culture and leisure which houses exhibition gallery, cafe, library and lecture theatre in an open and natural space in Tampines, Singapore. This project aims to maintain the vastness of the green space admist tall commercial buildings. Walls create physical and visual barriers that might seem daunting at times. hence this project aims to remove the physical wall and replace them with thin columns instead. This allows visual porosity and creates visual breathing ground across the site as the public is able to view what is happening both inside the building, as well as across the building. The different programs are rotated to open up the views and are layered at different heights as a response to the topography on the site.

LOOP Architecture Core Studio I, 2015 Instructor: Jackson Tan This project asks for a design of a D-man-D (digital manufacturing and design) centre located in an empty and flat plot of land at SUTD campus. Inspired by the interconnectivity between the cycle of water and the cycle of design, the project brings out the essence of design through the use of one single continuous strip. the architecture is in a loop where walls morph into roof and roof morphs into floor. Similar to water flowing, the spaces flow from one to another. There are three entrances where people can enter the centre courtyard which will lead to three main parts of the building, namely the design space, the fabrication space and the exhibition space.

UNFOLD Digital Design and Fabrication, 2016 Instructor: Stylianos Dritsas Group Work Unfold is a project that takes on parametric design from a fresh perspective: instead of generating form from the mathematic parameters, a mathematical concept is broken down and used to define the form. Based on the concept Cumulative Distribution Function, points are generated and nodes are drawn between those points to create a str ucture. Due to the nature of the function, the density of points decreases gradually towards one axis, creating longer connections at the fur ther par ts of the str ucture. In all, Unfold is an experiment aimed to translate a mathematical concept into a design concept.

code and idea
Using a simple idea (CDF) to generate random point in a box and then connect the points with a certain logic. The resultant collection of points will then be scattered such that a larger concentration of points will occur in the bounding box closer to the origin and decrease in concentration further from the origin. The parameters are the size of the box. This design is then tailored to suit the site where the less dense part is faced towards a more chaotic part of the site and the denser part towards the empty side. The form generated also creates a dome-like space underneath. The usage of different materials for the connections, namely wood dowels and steel cables, adds a finishing touch to the structure where one part looks volumetric while the other looks planar which gives out a sense of it unfolding.

The gesture intended is to have our structure respond to the two pillars on site. The idea is to make the structure seem as if it was growing out of one of the pillars. The structure was to grow both in the linear fashion and in the z-axis and in that sense start growing towards the pillar.

STRUSS Architecture Structural and Enclosure Design, 2016 Instructor: Sam Conrad Joyce Group Work With an aim to create a homely chair, we are interested in how the frame and the seat of the chair could be two separate elements yet still flow into one element. This was how we came up with the intial idea to make use of a continuous loop which works in tension to hold the entire chair together. The frame was concieved from a very basic idea of a chair but the beauty of the design was how the element holding the chair in place forms the base of the chair as well. The materials chosen for the chair are wooden frames and nylon strings. Using karamba in grasshopper, we analysed the effect of weight acting on the strings and frame of the chair, which allowed us to counteract the deflection by optimising the geometry of the frames.

TRIANGLES Making Spaces with Light, 2017 MIT Independent Activity Module Instructor: Dina El-Zanfaly Pair Work Triangles is an interactive installation with panels that will change its colour continously when touched. It is made up of 23 pyramid modules in either wooden or polycarbonat e frames with tracing paper. The materia ls are cut using the CNC machines. The LEDs are placed inside the pyramids, such that the light is diffused through the tracing paper.
