 The

Preamble to the Constitution begins with the phrase, “We the people…”In other words it says that the Constitution’s authority is based on the people themselves.


Chapter 2 Defining and Debating America’s Founding Ideals 

John Locke, huge influence on right and liberty.

Liberty in 1776 to some colonists meant moral freedom, others, religious freedom.

Locke included property to rights, Jefferson changed it to the pursuit of happiness.

Chapter 3

are called concurrent powers because the governments can independently use them at the same time.


Chapter 4- the colonial roots of American founder ideals. 1620, the mayflower, to Virginia got stylesgoing carried away by weather and settled in Massachusetts. 

In a 120 year period population in colonies increased to 1,166,114.

Government wasn’t local so colonies wouldn’t come together, even if it meant war.

The Role of political parties in government

political party is an organized group of people who have similar ideas about government.

 The

first two parties came out in the 1790s.

 One

of the parties was led by Thomas Jefferson, who wanted to help farmers and reduce the size of the federal government.

 The

other party was led by Alexander Hamilton who liked a strong government that could help businesses.

As war continues, public stylesopinions were starting to change on colored people being in the war. 

In order to be in the war, woman had to disguise themselves as men.

The civil war was a sign of trying to get freedom and to preserve the united states.
