ANNUAL LATINA EMPOWERMENT LUNCHEON Promoting Women Leaders in Service By Teresa Mercado-Cota Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, in collaboration with the National Hispanic Business Women Association (NHBWA), invited 100 Latinas to her Annual Latina Empowerment Luncheon on March 31st at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange, California to engage in a unique and life-enhancing experience. The event celebrated Cesar Chavez Day by inviting panelists that exemplify the principles of his work. This year's theme, Women in Service, included a panel of distinguished women that serve their communities in the areas of education, activism, and the military. The panel members featured below from right to left were: Erlinda Martinez, President of Santa Ana College; Gina Rodriguez, Director, National Farm Workers Service Center, Inc; and Nelida Yañez, U.S. Army Veteran, South Korea. The panel discussion centered on vision and implementation of service and leadership; balancing beliefs, challenges and goals; ways and means to best inspire young Latinas; and important considerations to run for elected office. Guests were inspired and uplifted by the personal stories, insights and advice of the special group of speakers. A very special note of gratitude is expressed to the primary sponsor, The Principal Financial Group ,for helping make the luncheon a reality. “For us the two go hand in glove, as there is no greater sense of empowerment than feeling, knowing and reaching financial security. What we bring to this circle is the idea of knowing there are tools and people out there to help you make sure your financial goals are defined and realized,” said Jeff Golan of Principal Financial, the sponsors for the luncheon for two consecutive years. Golan added that his company has launched a nationwide program at AmericaRebuilds.com to assist families rebuild their financial future in these difficult economic times.

"Today's event truly captures the principles of Cesar Chavez and the countless women we honor during Women's History Month," said Congresswoman Sanchez. “Some of our greatest leaders in U.S. history have undoubtedly made community service a priority, helping them meet their achievements.“
