A special THANK YOU to Special People! By Pat Danel Those of us who had the opportunity to attend the first luncheon to recognize the firefighters’ amazing work experienced the word “thank you” on a different level. Dr. Eddie Hernandez, Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD)Chancellor, organized this event as a way to pay tribute to these brave individuals who put their own lives on the line to save others. As Dr. Hernandez told the audience, “The luncheon was simply to thank them with no further agenda.”
Dr. Eddie Hernandez with NHBWA Executive Board
RSCCD Board of Trustees Members and Dr. Erlinda Martinez, President of Santa Ana College addressed the attendees with special tributes to our firefighters. An inspiring video illustrating the numerous hours in training was presented as well as certificates to the different firefighter units that attended the luncheon, which took place at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy in Tustin.
With the nation celebrating Thanksgiving in the month of November, it was only appropriate to have this appreciation luncheon also in November. We look forward to recognizing our firefighters again next year at the Orange County Firefighter Thanksgiving luncheon!

Did you know? The Viva Orange County! Business Expo a Success By Lilian de la Torre-Jimenez The Greater Santa Ana Business Alliance (formerly the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce) Business Expo, Viva Orange County! held on November 18, 2009 at the Doubletree Hotel in Orange was a huge success with over 300 people in attendance. The first of its kind business expo with a Viva Las Vegas theme attracted business owners from throughout Orange County as well as non-profit organizations, many of which partnered with the Greater Santa Ana Business Alliance to market the event, including the National Hispanic Business Women Association (NHBWA). Teresa Saldivar, Teresa’s Jewelers and Vince The NHBWA booth theme was Boxing in Vegas. “For our organization it was Brantley, Greater Santa Ana Business important to partner with the Greater Santa Ana Business Alliance for this first Alliance of its kind event in Orange County,” said Teresa Mercado-Cota, NHBWA president. “Especially in these difficult economic times, events of this kind that strive to promote and increase networking opportunities for businesses to succeed are crucial.”
The enthusiasm from the exhibitors was displayed in all their booths as they showcased their Viva Las Vegas spirit from a Big Fight in Las Vegas booth by NHBWA to the black jack motif displayed by the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The entertainment was spectacular as it included a very talented Elvis impersonator. The excited attendees had the opportunity to participate in Chinese raffles with their admission tickets as well as purchase additional raffle tickets for a chance to win very exciting prizes, including gift cards to local hotels and restaurants. The grand prize winner walked away with a his and her Seiko watch courtesy of Teresa’s Jewelers from downtown Santa Ana.
The IRS Has Issued New 2010 Optional Standard Mileage Rates The Internal Revenue Service issued the 2010 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2010, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:
• 50 cents per mile for business miles driven • 16.5 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations The new rates for business, medical and moving purposes are slightly lower than last year’s. The mileage rates for 2010 reflect generally lower transportation costs compared to a year ago. The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs as determined by the same study. Independent contractor Runzheimer International conducted the study. A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after using any depreciation method under the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) or after claiming a Section 179 deduction for that vehicle. In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for any vehicle used for hire or for more than four vehicles used simultaneously. Taxpayers always have the option of calculating the actual costs of using their vehicle rather than using the standard mileage rates. Information provided by John Ghaly. Scholarship Spotlight By Patty Homo 2009 NHBWA Scholarship recipient Maria Isabel Meza, is a Business Administration and Spanish Language and Literature major at the University of the Pacific. She is the second oldest of 4 children and was born in French Camp, California. She calls Stockton her home, where she lives with her parents Teresa and Margarito and siblings Claudia, Patty and Junior. After finishing her studies at Fremont Middle School she went on to Franklin High School where Maria Isabel enrolled in the rigorous International Baccalaureate Program. Her hard work and good grades allowed her to get accepted to three schools, the University of the Pacific, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis. However, her financial difficulties and the need to help her family drove Maria to decide to stay close to home and she enrolled at the University of the Pacific. Joining M.E.Ch.A, as Secretary and Historian, Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honors Society, Alpha Lambda Delta, Delta Sigma Pi (DSP) Business Fraternity and the Community Involvement Program (CIP) helped Maria grow as an individual and get involved in the community while getting to know other Pacific students. Maria Isabel currently volunteers at the San Joaquin Delta College and the Migrant Education Program. “My parents have always taught me to work for what I want in life and be responsible,” Maria Isabel says. Upon graduating, she hopes to continue school and receive her MBA. Her long-term aspiration is to work at a well known corporation such as Apple or Google. “I have been blessed as a NHBWA scholarship recipient. The scholarship will help me cover the cost of books and the ever increasing tuition,” says Maria Isabel. The NHBWA is proud of all your accomplishments Maria Isabel and wishes you continued success in 2010.
