There is nothing like the big smile of a satisfied student receiving his or her certificate. This is what happened during the graduation ceremony of the first six-week “How to Develop a Successful Business” seminar that was held on June 9th. The funding for the seminar was made possible by a Grant provided to NHBWA by United Way of Orange County as part of the Community Impact Grant Program aimed at educating the community to become more financially selfsufficient. The classes were offered in partnership with Orange County Small Business Development Center (OCSBDC) and ESCRI (East Street Community Renewal Initiative) at no cost, a $1,000 value per student, during the months of April, May and June. Topics included finances, marketing, business development plans, strategies to increase sales, time management, a special business presentation by Wells Fargo, and much more! The six-week series was taught at the ESCRI Center in Anaheim in Spanish by Elisabeth Pechs, Orange County SBDC consultant. The graduating class consisted of more than 40 students. Due to its success, NHBWA will announce in the near future the days and location of the next six-week seminar. Everybody is welcome.

Did you know? Working Together By Yobany Banks-McKay
Approximately 50 community leaders attended the NHBWA luncheon sponsored by New York Life on June 22nd. The topic of the luncheon “Business Sponsorships & Resources… Perspectives That Will Help You Succeed” was addressed by two well-known community leaders, Dr. Eddie Hernandez, Chancellor of Rancho Santiago Community College District, and Steve Bakke, Managing Partner with New York Life. One of the points made by Dr. Hernandez was that success comes when you work as a team and ask for help, especially before mistakes are made.
NHBWA President Yobany Banks-McKay
Dr. Hernandez identified himself as a supporter of NHBWA for many years and commended the organization for always working together among members and other organizations for the betterment of the community. He also encouraged the audience to continue being part of or joining NHBWA. During his remarks, Mr. Bakke talked about the importance of giving back to the community indicating that it has been a priority for New York Life to work with non-profit organizations and supporting their programs and cited “Comfort Zone Camp”, an organization that helps children dealing with the loss of a loved one, as an example of an organization that New York Life has sponsored for many years.

In the spirit of networking and supporting each other, attendees had the opportunity to introduce themselves. It is NHBWA’s objective to continue having these luncheons to promote networking among its members and also to provide speakers addressing topics that affect the community in general.

The Life of Two Amazing Event Planners By Sylvia Lopez-Navarro Vintage Orchid Event Planning became a reality when fate brought Yvonne Hernandez and Cynthia A. Contreras together through a mutual friend who had heard of their dream of turning their hobby into a career. Yvonne and Cynthia became business partners and friends on the same day they met. Vintage Orchid officially became a business back in October of 2008. “What makes us so unique, is that we are a team of savvy and bilingual Latinas who are available to plan and coordinate quinceañeras, weddings, sweet sixteens, tea parties, birthdays, anniversaries, and all memorable events,” Yvonne said. They get their inspiration and ideas from magazines, shows, family, friends and, of course, their clients. "We are always on the lookout for 'green' ideas. If we can recycle, reduce, reuse and close the loop then we've done our part to help our environment. There are a lot of eco-friendly ideas out there that are just adorable,” said the chic-savvy planners. Even though there is always the notion that comes with an event planner... how will I ever be able to afford one? “We help our clients budget our services into their event by guiding them on ways to save money.” Not only are they affordable, dynamite and talented, they are clever. If they can pull off an intimate beach wedding with less than 2 week’s notice, they can do anything! Your Memories Are In Their Hands. Scholarship Highlight Experiencing Education in Seville By Cecilia Novella Mara Isabel Meza is currently studying abroad in Seville, Spain. She has been blessed with the opportunity to take classes with Spanish students and acquire a full experience of how life is as a student in Spain . The classes are not the same as in the United States and it took her a while to get used to them, but Maria feels as if things are going much better. Maria tells us that she is currently living with a “señora”, who has helped her with the transition and also cooks some of the best Spanish food! “By residing in Seville, I am being enriched with the opportunity to meet new friends and learn more about myself and reinforce my life goals," Maria says. Understanding the business structure in Spain is helping her expand her knowledge on international business techniques and the different ways business can be conducted. “Studying abroad thus far has been an unforgettable experience that is helping me expand my knowledge and grow more independently as a person. As a NHBWA Scholarship Alumnus, I am extremely grateful for all your support, since it has helped me get a step closer to graduating with my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration,” Maria adds.
