¡Si se puede! By Pat Danel VP and General Manager of Univision TV stations KMEX Channel 34 and KFTR Channel 46 Maelia Macin could not join us in person, due to her busy schedule, at the NHBWA 10th Annual Awards and Scholarship Dinner held last May. Maelia was recognized as one of the three Women of the Year. We appreciated the fact that she kindly recorded her acceptance speech, which was played during the event. However, we were very excited when she invited us to her offices at Univision as it gave us the opportunity to share with her NHBWA’s mission and objectives. Maelia commended NHBWA for the scholarship program mentioning how much education means to her. Maelia attributes her success, to her perseverance in education that was instilled in her by her immigrant parents. Maelia hopes that more and more females continue believing in the importance of education that will allow them to aspire to higher positions, especially in those industries that are male driven. It was truly our honor to meet with Maelia and to present her with the well deserved award in the Corporate Responsibility category. Seen on the photo above from left to right, NHBWA President Yobany Banks-McKay, VP and General Manager of KMEX Channel 34 and KFTR Channel 46 Maelia Macin, and NHBWA Interim Executive Director Pat Danel.

NHBWA is very proud of Maelia’s accomplishments and for being such a great role model for young Latinas as she truly personifies the “Si se puede” motto!.

Scholarship Highlight A Message of Appreciation

By Francisco de Anda

2010 NHBWA scholarship recipient, Julianna Guillen currently attends the University of California, Riverside, where she is pursuing her undergraduate studies in Anthropology and Psychology. Her professional goals include attending graduate school and ultimately pursuing a career in the field of law and forensics. Some of Miss Guillen’s extracurricular activities at the university include being the president of Sigma Phi Alpha, a Latina based sorority, and holding a secretary position for the Native American Student Association. Miss Guillen expresses her gratitude and appreciation to NHBWA for being able to help cut some of her educational costs due to recent fee increases at the university. Her message to fellow college students is to “be persistent when searching for scholarships, grants, and anything that could potentially help cover educational costs because education is crucial and it simply does not matter how much you spend in the short-term because it will certainly pay off in the long-term.” Julianna is very impressed with how NHBWA hosted their annual awards and scholarship dinner. She has attended other award ceremonies held by other organizations in the past and none come close to what NHBWA has organized and conducted. She once again said, “Thank you NHBWA!”.
