VOLUNTEERING

Staff Volunteer News

I was so chuffed to see that the Year 10s had decided to adopt a penguin I have such a soft spot for them.

Some time ago, when I was teaching in Cape Town, I arranged for a group of girls to help out when thousands of penguins were affected by an oil spill from a ship passing Cape Town We spent many afternoons, evenings and weekends feeding, treating for ingested oil cleaning feathers and forcing them to swim so they become waterproof again. I was even involved in doing blood tests

The highlight was when a few of us were taken with boxes of nowhealthy birds to the beach to release them

Science Week Visit To North Ealing Primary School

Well done to the Year 11 enrichment group who made Kaleidoscopes with the children at North Ealing Primary School during science week The school reported back ‘Thank you so much for the sessions yesterday The staff said it was well organised and very well received by the childrenthey really enjoyed it’

Here’s what the students said:

On Tuesday 14th March during periods 7 & 8, nine of us went down to North Ealing primary school to teach the year 3s how to create their very own Kaleidoscopes; we had been planning this activity for science week the past couple of enrichment sessions This event was so much fun! Working with younger years to inspire them to take part in engaging craft activities to celebrate science week left us feeling a massive sense of achievement and fulfillment We can't wait to start planning our next activity for the customers of Mencap!

A group of year 11's have been planning a science lesson idea in our enrichment lessons for the children in year 3 at North Ealing primary school For their science day we thought we should teach them about reflections and symmetry by creating their own kaleidoscope With the help of Dr Lai, we created a creative and engaging challenge for the children We helped them fold mirror board to create the reflective main body and they created their own pattern on tracing paper We all really enjoyed teaching and helping the children
