CHARITIES & VOLUNTEERING

STAFF AND PARENTS RUN EALING HALF MARATHON FOR THE LOGCABIN

On Friday 27th September, in support of the Log Cabin charity and Ealing Half Marathon, the school dressed up in sportswear You generously donated towards one of our key charities to be able to wear activewear for the day.

On the Sunday, five members of staff (Mr Ghallager, Mr Lawrence, Mrs Goodall, Mrs Bennett and Mrs Johnson) alongside five parents completed the half marathon around the streets of Ealing All staff thanked students for their enthusiastic cheering, especially over the last few miles when energy was running low. Your support enabled several of the team to achieve a half marathon PB!

Mr Ghallagher commented how it gave him a boost when people shouted ‘Mr G’! Mrs Goodall appreciated the encouraging posters made in both Latin and Greek by Alex D Mrs Bennett was happy as she also secured a PB alongside the rest of the team. Mrs Johnson however was a bit disappointed with her PW (personal worse) but is already preparing for next year!

Money is still being counted but the current total stands at £1750 This will go towards the Log Cabin’s new garden facilities to be enjoyed by the children who use the afterschool and holiday clubs.

VOLUNTEERING & COLLECTIONS

EALING FOOD BANK VISIT

HERON HOUSE VISIT

This term the caring choir visited a new residential setting. Alongside Chestnut Lodge, St Davids and Downhurst we are hoping to regularly visit Heron House sheltered accommodation on a nearby housing estate Heron house provides accommodation for retired members of the community which is supported by a warden The choir enjoyed visiting a new residential setting and hope to go there again soon

Some of the older people who live in care homes have dementia and really appreciate being able to sing with the choir Lily in Y10 writes ‘For enrichment lessons, we are in a choir made up of year 10s and 11s, and we go to different care homes every week, to sing to older people, some with Alzheimer's The experience is extremely heartwarming and enjoyable, as we get to sing songs for those there, and see the moments of recognition as well as joy when they realise what songs we're singing

It is so nice to see how both just a simple song jogs their memories on when they were younger, and how they start to sing the lyrics, even though some people hardly spoke before So many people suffer from Alzheimer's and it's amazing how something as simple as a song can help them reconnect with their past

SANITATION 4 SISTERS

On Tuesday 8th November, one of the enrichment volunteering groups visited Ealing Foodbank warehouse in Hanwell Students were shown where their donations were stored and the foods a visitor to the Foodbank would receive The group carried out a shopping task where they had to go around the warehouse collecting food to feed a family for three days. They had to share with each other their menus. There was some interesting meal planning. The next task involved drawing up a budget on Universal Credit Students were surprised how little an adult receives and how far it has to be stretched across a variety of living expenses As a result of this Ealing foodbank generally helps around 800 people per week They are always in need of rice and milk alternatives and donations can be taken to the Hanwell warehouse on Wednesdays or dropped in the boxes in local supermarkets

Together as a school community NHEHS donated a great number of period products that will all go to the charity Sanitation 4 Sisters

This charity helps tackle the vital issue of period poverty by working towards making sure that women especially in our local area have access to period products without the worry of affordability

The collection is being sent to our partner The Marylebone Project, a charity that helps homeless women in the UK, and are being distributed in their centre A big thank you to everyone who donated, these products will make such an important difference to the lives of many women

YEAR 11 FUNDRAISING FOR UNICEF

This term, our hardworking Year 11 students organised a series of exciting events to raise money for UNICEF, an international charity that supports children around the world The Year 11's wanted to raise funds to support children living in the conflict that is currently taking place in the Middle East The students showed incredible dedication and creativity in their efforts, hosting two highly successful bake sales – one of which embraced the Halloween spirit with themed treats

In addition to the bake sales, they also ran a fun-filled "Duck Hunt" game that brought smiles to many faces, as well as a spectacular "Dress to Impress" fashion show, where teachers got involved and showcased their unique styles to support a great cause

Thanks to the collective efforts of Year 11 and the generosity of the school community, they were able to raise an impressive amount for UNICEF. We are immensely proud of their hard work and the impact their fundraising will have on children in need

HARVEST FESTIVAL COLLECTION

This year ’ s harvest festival was held on Tuesday 1st October All of the food that was brought into school to create the hampers was donated to the Ealing foodbank

Once again the school community excelled in generosity and creativity. It was lovely to see the different hampers on display in the atrium assembled by the different form groups, with some creative designs and autumn-themed decorations.

As always it was incredibly difficult to judge the winning hampers The following form groups won in the following categories:

Most amount of food

1st - 7 E

2nd - 7 N

3rd - 10 D

Best presented hamper

1st - 8 S1

2nd - 8 N

3rd - 9 G

Foodbank emailed to say ‘I just wanted to write to thank you for your recent donations to Ealing Foodbank You donated 850kg of food and toiletries The food and essentials that you donated go directly to those experiencing hardship Thank you so much for your generosity’

AMNESTY HALLOWEEN DRESS UP

Yesterday the NHEHS Amnesty Youth Group ran a Halloween dress up day as well as a Halloween themed charity event at lunch with lots of games and sweets We raised an amazing total of £420, which we will donate to Sudan We felt passionate to do this cause, as we feel as though the atrocities occurring in Sudan need to be recognised Armed conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, have caused mass civilian casualties in deliberate attacks All parties in the conflict have committed serious violations and abuses of international human law Women and girls have been subjected to conflict-related sexual violence These unjust actions must not go unpunished and the people of Sudan must be helped This is why it was so important we raised money and spread awareness

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING

This year staff and the Sixth Form hosted Macmillan Coffee Morning’s on Wednesday 25th and friday 27th September An array of cakes were enjoyed in both the sixth form centre as well as the staff room.

Over £150 was raised for the work of Macmillan which seeks to support and provide services for people living with cancer

CARE4CALAIS VISIT - OCTOBER

On Wednesday 16th October, volunteers from Y10-13 visited the C4C supported hotel in Hayes This was our first visit since October and it was lovely to see many familiar faces Some of the children, sadly for us, have been rehoused in permanent accommodation We wish them well but will miss seeing them at our craft sessions The children were eagerly awaiting our arrival One mum said that her daughter ‘loves it when we visit’ another mum said her daughter was worried we weren’t going to be there. (Unfortunately there were train delays and we were a little later than planned). Crafts and games were popular as usual but the train track and toys for the younger children are also a big hit

On our future visits this term we will be taking up books collected by the Junior school and Christmas party bags assembled again by the Senior school. We are also hoping to hold a collection of hats, scarves and gloves for the children and adults in the hotel Look out for more information on future visits and collections
