Harvest Hampers

On Thursday the 7th of October we collected the Harvest Hampers for Ealing Food Bank. 9S won the ‘Best Looking Hamper’ competition and 7E won the ‘Hamper with the Most Items’ competition. We donated over 40 boxes worth of items. The Foodbank have emailed to thank you for all your generous contributions!

ECO WEEK

The Felix Project

Thank you to all the bakers, sellers and buyers at the Felix Project bake sales. The Felix project collects fresh, nutritious food that cannot be sold. They deliver the surplus food to charities and schools so they can provide healthy meals and help the most vulnerable in society. The cake sale raised over £150.

Well done everyone!

Marine Conservation Society

Well done to Abby and Lara in 7E for raising money for the Marine Conservation Society through their sea creature fimo creations. Each creature was handcrafted and given its own identity. Year 7 snapped up these wonderful creations.

Refugee bags

The last of the refugee bags have been dropped to West Drayton. Thank you again for all your generosity. Here are some of the children collecting their bags. They were delighted to receive them. (Unfortunately we cannot show faces).

Here is a student reflecting on the activity:

“Hearing about the young Afghan children who have been displaced, I wanted to do something to help them feel more at home in England. When I heard we would be providing gifts for the refugee children currently housed in Heathrow I was very pleased to know I could do something to support them.

My form was allocated an 11 year old and a 15 year old boy. I knew that school supplies like notebooks, pens, pencils, and a reusable water bottle, whilst not particularly awe-inspiring, would be very useful as they start school. Playing cards, and card games like Uno, we thought, would also be a good gift as these are internationally played games and require no understanding of English to play.

We hope that by gifting these bags we are showing the children at Heathrow that they are not alone in this dicult transition, and hopefully the items we have given will help make this transition easier for them.”

CARE 4 CALAIS

Your generous donations from the wear red or green dress up day will be used by the Ealing branch of Care for Calais to buy shoes for the many residents of hostels in Ealing and the Heathrow areas.

Here is an example of the much needed shoes that will be distributed shortly.

Mini Mile for the Log Cabin

Thank you to all junior school and senior school students who committed to running the mini mile for the Log Cabin. All their well earned sponsorship has been added to the overall final total.

“When I heard about the Mini Mile, I thought it would be a great way to help an incredible charity. The Log Cabin is essential to many families all over Ealing and it has an amazing cause. On the day of the run, I was quite nervous because most of the other kids in my group had done the race before, but in the end it didn’t matter. I had lots of fun and raised money for many kids! I can’t wait to run again next year and support the Log Cabin more in the future.”

Total raised for Log Cabin = nearly £7,000

CHARITY STORIES

Welcome to the first Charity Story of the year. In this section, we will celebrate NHEHS students and share their stories of volunteering beyond the school walls!

Our first guest is Felicity Cooper (Y10G) who is volunteering at Scouts Uk.

Founded in 1908, Scouts Uk is the largest Scouting organisation in the United Kingdom. The association aims to provide fun adventures to young people, while giving them the opportunity to learn skills for life and interact with members of their community and beyond.

Here is what Felicity has to say about her volunteering experience at Scout.

Whatmotivatedyoutolookforvolunteeringopportunities?

I really enjoyed being a scout, and wanted to help when I was older. Besides, for my DofE bronze, I knew I had to complete a volunteering section, and volunteering as a young leader seemed very interesting to me.

Whydidyoupickthisassociation?

I picked this association because I had attended it when I was younger as a scout, and I wanted to volunteer somewhere local.

Whatarethethreethingsyoulikethemostaboutyourvolunteeringwork?

I enjoy helping children learn, developing new skills myself and creating positive memories of scouting for the children.

Whatwouldbetheadvice/suggestionyoucouldgivetoapersonwhoisconsideringvolunteering?

I would suggest to them to reach out to local charities and bring a friend along (for example my friend Tara also volunteers there).

Y11 Charity events

Well done to Y11 for all their creative ideas in raising money for Anti-salvery International. Students have enjoyed a bake and sweet sale, Teacher karaoke and the showing of Mean Girls complete with pizza and candyfloss.

Their hard work has resulted in nearly £200 being raised.

Y10 Charity events

November is Y10’s Charity month. They will be raising money for Women’s Aid. Look out for their bake sales, candy cane delivery service, sport’s events with the Junior school and wear a pink hair accessory day.

GETTING INVOLVED

Here are some further suggestions for how you can get involved in charity and volunteering activities this half term.

Saving crisp packets

Did you know it takes 8- years for a crisp packet to decompose?Did you know that 150 of them can be ironed together and turned into a survival blanket for a homeless person which will help to keep their sleeping bag dry and insulated.

The ‘iron man ’ charity are collecting crisp packets and will be making these blankets up until christmas. Preferably they would like them to be washed in warm soapy water first.
