Welcome to 2022-2023!
Written by Miss Nicholas
As the end of another busy term draws to the end I am filled with so much pride in what our students are achieving in sport This Sports Report is brimmed with good news and pupil achievements
In November it was announced that we made it into the top 20 Girls Schools for cricket in the The Cricketer Schools Guide 2023’ We’ve have also run several residential sports trips Year 8, 9 and Sixth Form all had weekend netball tournaments at Condover Hall in Shropshire, gaining excellent success
Our Year 9 Hockey Team travelled to Newcastle to attend the newly restarted Year 9 GDST Hockey Tournament coming an impressive 4th out of 12 teams!
The biggest shout out success from me though must go to the Barbados Sports Tour which after being rescheduled twice, finally happened in October! I promised the students when they signed up that it would be a trip that would create memories for a lifetime I was so glad when they got back and confirmed that this had been true Do take the time to read the great article about this on page 5
All in all, I would sum up that I feel incredibly proud of everything the students have achieved and feel extremely grateful to the PE department and all our excellent external coaches for supporting them in reaching their own personal goals and ambitions As I am sure you are aware this is the last Sports Report I will write at NHEHS as I am moving on at Christmas I have honestly had a wonderful 6 years working with all the students When I came to the school I very much had a vision that I wanted every student to have a sport they enjoyed, no matter the level I also wanted those who found their talents in sport to feel supported and recognised that they could pursue their dreams to the highest of levels I do think this has been achieved and thank all the students for being with me on this crazy Journey!
I wish all staff, parents, and students a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year
Over and Out!

Year 7 Pre-Season Hockey & Netball
Written by Erin Liset & Alice Norwell
were very excited to see many new faces and get to speak to people and get to know them better This felt like a different atmosphere to the school we went to before
The PE coaches that we met at the start of the day were Mr Henderson, Miss Newman and Miss Nicholas These coaches made the activities amusing and entertaining They made all the girls very welcome and ensured that everyone got to know each other We saw some familiar faces but overall we spoke to everyone there
We started with some fun games at hockey, working together with different people We then did different skills, being led by senior hockey players who volunteered In netball, some of the Year 10's & Year 12's were also there to help coach us and spoke to us about what to expect at NHEHS. We did lots of drills and matches, just like we did in hockey.
That day helped us to build confidence and now we have some amazing friends who we will never forget.
Overall, we thought this day was very helpful to get to know the people that were going to be in Year 7 together and to play sports will various new faces! Thank you so much to all the PE department staff who made the day a success!

U18 Netball Tour to Condover Hall
Written by Gen Pearce
During the first few weeks of term, Year 11-13 netball players set off to Condover Hall in Shropshire for a residential weekend tournament.
It was a weekend of training and match play, with the team successfully winning the round robin tournament on Sunday On Saturday, we were fortunate enough to be coached by high level coaches and players from superleague teams, such as Leed Rhinos and London Pulse, as well as the England Vitality Roses player, Beth Cobden, who led an instructive session on defence
There was so much team bonding across the year groups doing various challenges and activities that were hosted onsite, such as climbing, gladiator challenge, abseiling and the leap of faith
It was a truly enjoyable experience - a huge thank you to Miss Dunkley and Miss Munro-Hall for organising and leading it!
U13 & U14 GSA Condover Hall tour
The U13A & U14A netball teams travelled to Condover Hall in Shropshire to attend the GSA Netball Tournament
After settling into their rooms on Friday all the players had a talk by Vitality Roses England netball player Ella Bowen where she shared her netball journey and answered some questions from the students
Saturday was a jam packed day, with both teams playing 6 matches Both the U13A and U14A teams qualified for the Trophy playoffs on Sunday Some excellent netball was played by all, and after a busy morning of netball, the students enjoyed an evening of activities including lazertag, archery, and a disco
The U13 and U14 teams finished 5th and 3rd respectively in the Trophy sections of the GSA Condover Hall Netball Tournament

Ibstock Netball Tournaments
The annual Ibstock Netball Tournaments are always a great afternoon, where we see the A teams come together as a team for the first time
Unfortunately the U13 tournament was cancelled due to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, but the rest of the week's age groups were able to play
The U12A, U14A and U15A teams all had outstanding performances at their tournaments, finishing first in each of the age groups, out of 13 schools The U18A team finished a respectable 9th out of 13 schools, only losing 3 matches during the tournament
All the teams had a great afternoon of netball, and bonded well together for the season ahead

Senior Sports Tour to Barbados
During half term our senior Hockey Netball and Swimming Squads travelled to Barbados for our Senior Sports Tour The trip gave our students the chance to train as a team and experience the different cultures that the island has to offer The tour involved four hockey and four netball matches and various training sessions The swimmers had daily training sessions, including dry side sessions, and finished with a competitive gala at the end of the tour
By Adeline M-S, netballer
I absolutely loved going to Barbados this half-term not only because it brightened up the slowly darkening evenings that October brings every year but also because of the amazing netball we all played along with some other very fun activities I played netball on the trip and we managed to win all our netball matches! The Bajan teams we played were great sports and so were very enjoyable to play with
It seemed that every day there was something going on Whether that be an intense volleyball game on the beach followed by a dive in the sea or a much needed cool swim in the hotel pool after a successful day of fixtures Our training sessions were filled with energy and motivation despite the very draining and dizzying heat- although I can confirm it took some getting used to the thick, humid air! However, smiles and enthusiasm remained and the lunches we were about to make ourselves in our rooms most definitely pulled us through those gruelling training sessions!
The highlight of the trip for me had to be forming solid inter-year group friendships because everyone seemed so relaxed and up for anything which lightened up the trip and made it one we would never forget I am sure the catamaran trip was a highlight for many of us as many of us had not yet been on one before It was filled with joy and crystal clear waters although a few people (including myself) were stung by something awful on one of the scuba diving trips (I am telling myself it was the most dangerous jellyfish in the world) but I know that those Bajan scars only made us stronger and the memories even sweeter All in all it was a really incredible trip and definitely one to remember!”
By Maddy C, hockey player
“On the Barbados sports tour I played hockey and waterpolo The tour started off with hockey for me where I participated in three games and two training sessions We started first with the training session which was led by Miss Newman and our holiday guide Junior who also played hockey We then went on to a game later that day where we bonded with the Barbados team and won with the score of 6-2 Meeting the team for the first time was an amazing experience as they were all really kind to our team and gave us a warm welcome to hockey in Barbados Then after the next game we had another training session with another member of the Barbados team in which we developed many of our shooting skills Later that day we went on to play the next game, and then another the next day after where we met with new players on the other team including the national goalkeeper for Barbados
On top of doing sport we also took part in extra activities including a jeep ride, visiting a fish market and a catamaran experience The jeep ride was first, and was a thrilling experience as we were driven from one coast of Barbados to the other we experienced many off road adventures with bass boosted music inside the jeep We visited many places along the way including a beach, a haunted house and a cliff side which gave us a beautiful view over Barbados
On the last day of our journey we went with Tiami Cruises on a catamaran experience with sessions of snorkelling and lunch provided When snorkelling we saw many different fish and corals including a sting ray at the bottom of the ocean floor! When not doing either a planned experience or sport, many of us would go to the beach beside the hotel, visit the pool or rest in our rooms Over the trip I met many new people across the years who I hadnt spoken to before and also got closer to some of my existing friends On top of this, I also encountered many new things such as the kind personalities of the citizens of Barbados and some Barbados food which I had never heard of including the McDonalds lookalike Chefette As stated the citizens gave us such a nice experience as every time we walked along a d ld b t d b th l l d i h d ll travels Every tour guide we had also adopted these traits making the experience of Barbad

On November 24th our U14A hockey team travelled to Newcastle for the annual GDST hockey rally, which this year included 12 teams from all over the Trust
On the first morning of the tournament we won both our matches –6-2 vs Newcastle High and 2-0 vs Sheffield High (MVP Olivia B) On the second day of the tournament we lost 0-2 to Northampton High but picked up 4-0 wins against Sutton High and Nottingham High We therefore ended 2nd in our group and qualified for the Trophy playoffs (top 4 teams) MVPs were Guusje V and Olivia B
The final day we competed in the Trophy playoffs, without one of our star players (Olivia B) who sustained an injury The team battled well to come out with a 0-0 result against Norwich High followed by narrow losses – 0-2 to Streatham & Clapham High and 0-1 to Northampton High, meaning we finished in fourth place MVP of the final day was Katerina G, our goalkeeper
We are all very proud of our performances and very grateful to Miss Newman and Mrs Greenslade for taking us on this trip We had so much fun and it was a great hockey experience- we hope we can do something like this again soon!

U15 HockeyCounty Tournament
Written by Alice Whelan
On Monday 5th December, the U15 hockey team traveled down the road to University of Westminster Astro to compete in the County Tournament
We were drawn in a pool with Latymer Upper, Ibstock & Streatham and Clapham - all tough apponents First up was a 5-0 win against Latymer Upper followed by a 2-0 win against Ibstock To make it into the finals we needed to finish first in our pool Streatham & Clapham was the last pool match, and after a slow start, the team scored three fantastic goals to win 3-0!
We were into the finals!
We waited patiently to see who we would face in the final, as the other pool still had some games to play In the end, Kingston Grammar School finished top of their pool, so we met them in the final
We gave our all finishing 1-0 up at half time thanks to an excellent hit from Guusje In the second half we tried our best to prevent the other team conceding however an excellent reverse hit from the other team meant we tied At full time it was still 1-1 therefore we had to go to penalty shuffles We needed 5 players to complete penalty shuffles and we chose (Zoe D, Alice, Georgia, Guusje and Olivia B) We ended up losing the penalty shuffles 3-1
The U15 team finished 2nd in the County and this was a wonderful way to finish off the Autumn Term
GDST Day of Dance
Written by Miss Douglas-White
On Monday 5th December schools across the GDST attended the annual GDST Day of Dance, which was held at the iconic Base Studio in Vauxhall,
London In attendance were seven of our Year 10 dancers Bronwyn O, Jaan W, Jemima C, Juliet I, Kiki V L, Roma S and Sadie M
There were 4 different dance style on offer: Contemporary, Lyrical Jazz, Commercial and Musical Theatre, which were taught by some of the industry’s leading professionals The students were placed into workshops where they were challenged to learn choreography and routines in different dance styles from professional choreographers This did push some of the girls out of their comfort zones especially having to learn styles they were not confident with
One of the highlights of the day was the Q & A segment of the day, where students were able to ask questions to the choreographers and gain insight of how the industry works and find out how each choreographer gained their credits
A huge thank you to Kira Bishop from Putney High School who organised another successful day!
The potential for greatness lives within each of us. – Wilma Rudolph
