In Downtown York,
just one New Year countdown is not enough. York starts ringing in the New Year at 6pm, at the first of three countdown events that will welcome 2017.
Start your New Year’s Eve festivities at Mudhook Brewing Company (34 N. Cherry Lane), where they bring old world flair to the holiday by celebrating Belgian-style. The event marks the release of their Belgian Dubbel brew, a brown ale with “understated bitterness, fairly heavy body and pronounced fruitiness with cereal character,” according to Mudhook owner, Jeff Lau. Partygoers can also dine on traditional Belgian fare like Belgian Stoofvlees (stew) and freshly made Belgian Waffles. At 6pm—midnight in Brussels—the crowd moves outside to Cherry Lane to watch the infamous Pint Drop. “Each city has its own traditions of dropping a rose, or bologna (Lebanon) to kick off the New Year,” says Lau. “Since we're a brewing company, we’ll be dropping a pint.” For more information on the Belgian New Year celebration, follow Mudhook’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/ mudhookbrewing.

The City of York has two fun downtown celebrations planned to ring in the New Year on December 31st. If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve event to accommodate all ages, bring your little ones to Central Market (34 W. Philadelphia Street) for a special Children’s Countdown powered by Shipley Energy from 6pm to 8pm. Enjoy complimentary hats and noisemakers for youngsters, family-friendly entertainment, inflatables, photo backdrops and props, glitter tattoos, face painting and a balloon drop countdown at 8pm. Central Market vendors will be open with food and beverages for purchase during the festivities, and WARM 103.3’s Liz Bell and Chris Tyler will serve as emcees. For more information on this kid-friendly event, follow Central Market York on Facebook, www.facebook.com/ CentralMarketYork. Event organizers will be compiling a list of related special events happening nearby throughout the evening for those looking to spend New Year’s Eve downtown. Of course, at midnight you don’t want to miss the traditional white rose drop in Continental Square. As midnight approaches, the community is invited to gather in the Square for a countdown to the New Year. The crowd begins to assemble around 11:30pm to count down the last few seconds of 2016 and watch the brightly-lit white rose make its descent down the side of the former Citizens Bank building on the northeast corner of Continental Square.
www.yorkhistorycenter.org Once the white rose drops, a dazzling fireworks display, sponsored by Republic Services, lights up the sky and welcomes 2017 with a bang, literally. Co-sponsors for the New Year’s Eve celebrations are WARM 103.3, MediaOnePA, C.S. Davidson, and Block Business Solutions. Special thanks to the City of York General Authority for their assistance with the fireworks display.
It’s important to note that Market Street from Beaver to Duke and George Street from Philadelphia to King will be closed from 11 pm on December 31 until approximately 1 am on January 1. Parking will be restricted in that area beginning at 9 pm. Don’t forget: parking is free at York City meters and in the three garages after 5pm. For more information, visit www.yorkcity. org/NYE.

Over the past ten years First Fridays have grown exponentially and today more than 75 downtown shops and restaurants host special events, offer refreshments and promotions, and sponsor live entertainment. From Weco to the Market District to Royal Square, thousands of visitors to Downtown fill the streets, shops and restaurants, participating in the monthly themed activities, enjoying complimentary beer samples from The Beer Ace and Brewery Products and celebrating all that Downtown York has to offer.
First Fridays
are a “Community block party” of sorts, designed to introduce the York community to all the amenities Downtown: the shops, the restaurants, and the cultural offerings… and for those businesses to showcase their offerings to their community. Everyone is invited to attend First Friday in Downtown York when stores, restaurants, galleries and pubs offer extended hours and specials from 5-9pm on the First Friday of every month. Presented by WellSpan Health, First Friday is a celebration of Downtown shops, eateries, cultural venues and nightlife hotspots. First Friday events began in 2005 when Downtown Inc, then named Main Street York, established the tradition. As with most traditions, it took some time to take hold and become established. Those first few years had anywhere from ten to twenty merchants participating. Photo Credit: Digital Ephemera Photography

And with the advent of the PediCabs of York, First Friday attendees can enjoy easy transport from one area to another. Parking is free in York City after 5pm at both parking meters and the three York City garages, making it easy and convenient to join in the First Friday revelry. First Friday-goers are invited to participate in the fun on social media as well, posting photos and videos with the hashtag #FFYork. Follow along at www.facebook.com/ DowntownYorkPa.

Let’s Rock, York! YorVoice, March 25 Shower stall crooners, weekend garage rockers, those who belt
out tunes with hairbrush in hand-ever wonder what it would be like to sing on the Strand stage in front of screaming fans? Now’s your chance! Show us what you’ve got at our annual YorVoice event on March 25th from 7:30pm9:30pm at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center at 50 North George Street in York. Each year, YorVoice attracts the top singing talent in the area to compete in a friendly music showcase, with a range of performers from choirs to a capella groups, solo acts to high school garage bands. “The talent last year was amazing,” said Kelley Gibson, Cultural Alliance event organizer. “We had live bands and singers from all ages and backgrounds performing everything from opera to R&B. All the performances just blew us away. We’re so excited to see the crop of talent that comes forward this year.” In addition to performing for the crowd in the Strand-Capitol, a celebrity panel of judges is on hand to offer constructive feedback to the performers and select the YorVoice Champion.
“The talent last year was amazing,” said Kelley Gibson, Cultural Alliance event organizer. “We had live bands and singers from all ages and backgrounds performing everything from opera to R&B. All the performances just blew us away. We’re so excited to see the crop of talent that comes forward this year.”
But the judges don’t have all the say; the public will vote for their favorite performer through the People’s Choice award, given to the contestant with the most online and in-person votes at the event, at $1 per vote. Last year’s competition was fierce, with online votes coming in until the last minute. PAPERHEART, a team of Glatfelter Paper employees, was the 2016 People’s Choice winner. “We had a blast with the event and the internal camaraderie it generated,” said Bill Yanavitch, Senior Vice President of Glatfelter. In between contestants, our celebrity Emcee Chris Garrett of FOX43 and our house funk band Boompop Coalition make sure to keep the fun going. “You never know what Chris and Boompop are going to do next,” said organizer Kelley Gibson. So come on York; let’s rock! To sign up to compete in YorVoice, purchase tickets, or cast your vote for your favorite team, visit www.yorvoice.org.

Keeps the Party Hot! By Adam Nugent, Director, Eventive
Even
If there’s one thing we can agree on, fellow Americans, it’s that we’re all totally okay with the holiday madness being over in January. Am I right? Not in this town! On January 14 from 9am to 3pm, the winter wildness is alive with family and friends at FestivICE presented by York Traditions Bank! FestivICE is downtown York’s interactive, “laugh at the cold,” ice festival that doesn’t take “snow” for an answer. 18

“Okay, what’s an ice festival?”
“Well, what do we eat?”
You know you’re at an ice festival when Beaver Street and Cherry Lane Park open up to 3,500 plus people and more than 8,000 pounds of ice delightfulness is sculpted in the streets, on the sidewalks, and around the corners for a ridiculously good excuse to get out of the igloo during the chilly days of winter.
Central Market is open for your enjoyment and don’t forget about the local restaurants and bars on Beaver Street and right around the corner on Market Street, George Street, and Cherry Lane. Great food, live music presented at the CGA Law Firm sound stage, and your winter wonderland fix await, along with the ice sculpted marvels built by DiMartino Ice Company of Jeannette, PA. Oh yeah, let’s not forget the fire pits and s’more kits for all of you sweet-toothed snow bumbles. Go on, getcha, getcha, getcha, getcha, getcha sweets on.
“Uh, I don’t live in an igloo.” Alright, so you don’t live in an igloo, but that’s not gonna stop York’s super-chill art scene from building a totally sweet domed dwelling. Watch out for a surprise cubed structure of some sort that’ll have all the eskimos getting their ice on.

“Yeah, but I like to dance.”
“What about the kids?”
So the Missy Elliott line got you all worked up? Hope you don’t mind if we get like Ludacris and rewind it back with the Yeti Stomp, the York-famous cult dance party that busted onto the scene at the 2016 world downtown premier of FestivICE. What?!? You think Yetis don’t dance? That ain’t right. Weary Arts Group is back to show the masses of abominable monsters how to get down with their mitts down while the FestivICE Yeti leads his very own stomp session.
Everything mentioned (besides possibly the Missy Elliott comment above) is kid friendly and there’s even more for the tikes and the little troublemakers. Face painting, balloon art, rides, games, and inflatables - it’s all at FestivICE! If that doesn’t do it for your crew, then check out the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center for winter family movies playing at designated times! Did somebody say “Ana & Elsa”? Yeah, they will certainly be making their rounds at FestivICE and inside Central Market where vendors will have plenty of ice-centric specials for the cold busters to capitalize on.
“It’s gonna be cold. I’m against that.” FREE HUGS!!! If you get chilly and you’re looking for a warm force to heat up your life, the FestivICE Yeti and DownTown, the York Revolution mascot, can get you really warm and cozy with giant hugs! But it’s not all love and huggin’ because we know there are those of you who use that competitive drive to keep the good times burning. Challenge your bros and besties to a hockey game and you might go home with some prizes worth their weight in… ice. Not impressed? Three words: Frozen... Turkey... Bowling. Frozen Turkey Bowling presented by LifePath Christian Ministries is a terribly immature way to use a frozen piece of meat, but a surprisingly fun time is had by all who partake. There’s no sport like this in the world!!! (Clarification: no form of bowling is, or ever will be, considered a sport.)
“So
what do we do?”
Bring your family, friends, and some extra parkas and come laugh at the cold on Saturday, January 14 from 9am to 3pm on Beaver Street and Cherry Lane in Downtown York. We can all agree that hot food, local goodness, and huge quantities of ice and fire equal solid winter fun!

Kable House Presents
Kable House Presents is in the middle of its third season of concerts inside Downtown York’s historic Central Market. Kable House Presents is an independent, volunteer-driven initiative that showcases national touring acts in an intimate, listening-room environment. The organizers rent out the space at Central Market about once a month to host the shows. General admission tickets are available to the public, and food and beverages are available for purchase during the shows from featured Central Market vendors.
The series launched with generous support from the community, including grants, private contributions, and a Kickstarter campaign. It continues thanks to additional donations and season ticket sales. Kable House Presents spans a variety of genres and styles. In their first two seasons, they featured acts like Strand of Oaks, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Grammy winner Dom Flemons, Lydia Loveless, Nicholas David (a finalist on NBC’s The Voice), Patrick Sweany, and Aaron Lee Tasjan, as well as a sold-out show with the 10-piece Houston soul band The Suffers.

How it works: Enjoy breakfast and lunch specials at participating restaurants for $5, $10 or $15. Dive into dinner specials for $20, $30 or $40. This year, Restaurant Week York participants will also offer at least one menu item that is a “Restaurant Week only” item, available only during Restaurant Week! Start your Restaurant Week mornings off with breakfast or brunch at spots like Central Family Restaurant (400 N. George Street) and their famous Banana Bread French Toast or Steak and Eggs Breakfast Specials. You can also start your Restaurant Week mornings off gluttonously with the 8th Deadly Cinn from Pepper’s Grille at Central Market (34 W. Philadelphia Street): a Maple Bacon Wrapped Cinnamon roll, cut like a sandwich and stuffed with bacon or sausage, a fried egg and melted cheese, then topped with cream cheese icing.
Or try out one of York’s hottest new restaurants for brunch: Otto’s Kitchen and Cocktails (19 N. George Street). Their Steak and Eggs Benedict is a new downtown favorite. Go global with a stop at Mi Caldero (605 S. George Street)–Restaurant Week attendees go mad for the empanadillas, Mofongo and of course, flan for dessert! Continue your global food journey at Esaan Thai Restaurant (30 N. Beaver Street). Whether you go the curry or stir fry route, you can’t miss with their Restaurant Week lunch and dinner specials. Fine dining restaurants like The Left Bank Restaurant and Bar, Roosevelt Tavern, Tutoni’s and York Blue Moon offer three course tasting menus featuring an appetizer, entrée and dessert at the $40 price point. Starting with The Left Bank’s Caesar salad and ending with their chocolate mousse cake? That’s Restaurant Week York done right.

A Taste of York City The fifteenth annual A Taste of York City, a fundraising gala benefitting the City of York’s annual special events season, will return to the Valencia Ballroom on Friday, February 24. The event celebrates York City and features a seated, served dinner with each course presented by a different downtown restaurant or caterer. The evening also includes live and silent auctions of experience packages that highlight entertainment and cultural amenities throughout the city. One of the most unique aspects of A Taste of York City is its use of table hosts. Well-known people in the community are recruited to host tables at the event. They are responsible for decorating the table in a theme of their own choosing and filling their seats with friends and/or colleagues. Since its inception, the event has sold out each year and raised a cumulative total of over $200,000 toward the city’s annual special events, which are free for the entire community to enjoy and produced without using tax dollars. A Taste of York City kicks off the fundraising campaign that underwrites these events, and also kicks off Restaurant Week. Visit yorkcity.org/atasteofyorkcity for details and ticket information.
