Finding breast cancer early saves lives. Every woman needs a mammogram once a year starting at age 40.
If you have a family history or other risk factors for breast cancer, or if you notice a lump or changes in your breast, annual mammograms may begin earlier, as directed by your medical provider.
Early detection is your best DEFENSE.

Discover Your Superpower with Lisa Sun:
The Visionary Behind GRAVITAS
What if fear was the only thing keeping you from becoming your most powerful self? What if the act of letting go, of moving boldly forward despite the uncertainty, was the catalyst for discovering your unique superpower? Lisa Sun, founder and CEO of GRAVITAS, is a living testament to the transformative power of self-belief.
We are honored to have Lisa Sun appear as the keynote for the annual Women2Women (W2W) Evening of Empowerment on October 17th at the Abraham Lincoln in downtown Reading. This signature event is held annually and features a nationally recognized speaker to connect women and offer inspiration and empowerment. Her talk, titled Discover Your Superpower, will explore how women can harness their inner strengths, push past perceived limitations, and step into the spotlight—personally and professionally.
Lisa Sun’s story is one of bold reinvention. In her early career, Sun spent 11 years at McKinsey & Company, where she advised leading luxury, fashion and beauty brands across the globe. Though she was recognized as a top expert in her field, her
journey was not without its challenges. In fact, one of the most pivotal moments in her career came from what some might consider a harsh piece of feedback. During one of her first professional reviews, Sun was told she lacked “gravitas.” She was also advised to “buy a new dress, big jewelry and great shoes” to appear more mature and authoritative. For many, this criticism could have been demoralizing, but for Sun, it was a wake-up call—a challenge to redefine not only her own sense of confidence but also the very notion of what it means to have gravitas.
Rather than letting the feedback diminish her, Sun used it as a springboard for innovation. In 2012, she founded GRAVITAS, a fashion brand with a mission to catalyze
confidence from the inside-out. GRAVITAS quickly made waves in the industry by filing a global patent to build shapewear directly into dresses, offering women size-inclusive apparel that is both stylish and empowering. Sun’s vision was clear: She wanted to create clothing that did more than just look good—she wanted it to help women feel powerful and self-assured. Within just two months of launching, GRAVITAS was featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, PEOPLE, and TODAY. Sun’s brand was not only successful but quickly became a game-changer in the fashion industry.
From the very beginning, GRAVITAS wasn’t just about clothing; it was about sparking transformation. Sun has always believed in the transformative power of fashion—its ability to make people feel confident, no matter their size or shape. Sun herself has been a size 22, a size 8 and now a size 12. Through every size and every stage of life, she has remained committed to inclusivity, always seeking to create innovative designs that celebrate women’s bodies rather than forcing them to conform to unrealistic standards.
Sun’s commitment to empowering women doesn’t stop at fashion. She is also the national bestselling author of Gravitas: The 8 Strengths That Redefine Confidence, a USA Today bestseller that topped the Amazon charts for its genre. In her book, Sun explores the eight strengths that anyone can call upon to cultivate true confidence—strengths that go beyond the superficial and dig into the core of what it means to have gravitas. Drawing on her personal journey and professional insights, Sun lays out a blueprint for success that empowers readers to tap into their own potential and embrace their inner superpowers.
Sun’s message of confidence and empowerment has resonated with audiences across industries. She has spoken for groups including JPMorgan Chase, the Mortgage Bankers Association Summit for Women in Real Estate Finance, Dress for Success Global Success Summit and The Nantucket Project, to name a few. Her warmth, passion and authenticity have earned her widespread praise.
Sun’s entrepreneurial journey is a masterclass in resilience and innovation. Prior to founding GRAVITAS, she spent over a decade at McKinsey & Company, advising some of the world’s top luxury and fashion brands on strategic and operational issues. During her time at McKinsey, Sun established herself as one of the firm’s top experts in the luxury and fashion space. She published perspectives on the industry and gave keynote speeches at prestigious forums such as the American Express Luxury Summit. In many ways,

her time at McKinsey served as a training ground for the kind of innovative thinking and leadership that would later define her work at GRAVITAS. She credits her experience at McKinsey with giving her the skills and confidence to strike out on her own, armed with the knowledge and vision to build something truly game-changing. Sun’s influence extends far beyond the runway. She is also a recognized leader in communications and leadership, having been honored by Toastmasters in 2024 with the Golden Gavel Award. This prestigious award is presented annually to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the fields of communication and leadership, and Sun’s work in these areas is nothing short of exemplary. Her ability to inspire, motivate and lead by example has made her a sought-after speaker and thought leader in both the business and fashion worlds.
As someone who has experienced life at various sizes, Sun brings a unique perspective to the conversation around body image and confidence. She has always had a passion for style and inclusivity, and her personal experience with body image challenges has fueled her desire to create a brand that celebrates all women, regardless of size. Her approach to fashion is rooted in the belief that every woman deserves to feel confident and powerful in her own skin, and GRAVITAS is a reflection of that belief.
Sun’s journey from corporate strategist to fashion entrepreneur is a powerful example of what it means to bet on yourself and push past your potential. Her story is one of resilience, innovation, and the power of self-belief. At Women2Women’s Evening of Empowerment, Sun will share her insights on how to harness your own superpowers, transform ideas into movements, and bet on yourself every single day. Her talk promises to inspire and motivate women to step into their own power, embrace their unique strengths, and boldly pursue their goals.
For anyone attending the Evening of Empowerment, Sun’s talk will be an opportunity to not only gain inspiration but to also gain practical tools for cultivating confidence and unlocking their own potential. Sun’s message is clear: Confidence is not something that is given to you—it is something that you build, nurture and harness through intentional practice and belief in yourself.
And when you do, the possibilities are endless.

Testimonials
Several years ago, I was introduced to the Lean In Circle concept by a colleague who had signed up for an information session. As she explained what she knew about Lean In Circles, I was immediately intrigued. At the time, I had yet to tap into what I would soon recognize as a huge and welcoming community of likeminded women in Berks County whose goal is to uplift those around them and provide support in literally any way they are able. I signed up for that Lean In Circle, and looking back now I realize that taking that step was the key that unlocked a whole new experience for me, both personally and professionally. There are few places where you are encouraged to discuss and work through solutions to the issues women encounter in their daily professional lives, in a confidential and safe environment, but trust that this is one of those places. This group will meet you where you are and support you as you define the next steps of your own journey. If this sounds even a little intriguing to you, attend an information session and experience this energy for yourself!
Iloved my Lean In Circle so much I did it twice. Being a part of a Lean In Circle was an important part of my career development. Being able to discuss important issues with a trusted circle of professional women was extremely valuable to me. I was able to build a network of trusted friends. If you have the chance to be a part of one of the upcoming circles, please take part in it! You

Whatever your goal—whether you’re working toward a promotion or building your confidence, reentering the workforce or starting a business—your Circle will help you get there.

LOVE AFTER LOVE by
Derek Walcott
W2W Magazine Editorial Committee member Monica Rush reached out to Dr. Mele to learn more about why she is a Woman2Know:
W2W: What is your mission?
My mission is to look at myself in the mirror and love the person I am. For we are our own worst critics and if I am happy with who I have chosen to be and what I have chosen to accomplish, then I can feel the fulfillment in knowing the world appreciates that same me. This poem IS my mission.
The time will come when, with elation, you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror and each will smile at the other's welcome, and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self. Give wine. Give bread, Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart. Take down the love letters from the bookshelf the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit. Feast on your life.
W2W: Is there an “aha” moment or experience that defines who you are?
My aha experience was doing missionary work with Mother Teresa when I was a young impressionable late teenager. I spent three summers working beside her in the slums of India, caring for impoverished children. It was singularly the most pivotal experience of my life AND it changed the trajectory of my life, because Mother Teresa told me that I had a gift and my hands were given to me by God to care for other humans. Before I met her, I wanted to work in Africa with chimpanzees, like my other heroine, Jane Goodall. It is because of Mother Teresa that I became a doctor, a public health advocate and a community altruist.
W2W: What are three things that contribute to your success?
There are three concentric circles that have led to my success: The first is ME: my inner drive, steadfast determination, cultivated discipline, perseverance and resilience to work towards my goals. The second encompasses all the opportunities given to me by MY FAMILY including a vast education, exposure to the immense world and its diversity of people and cultures, and availability of resources that opened doors for me and enabled me to utilize my talents and abilities.
take advantage of (without taking for granted) opportunities and resources given, and open one’s eyes to the community around you that is advocating for your path to success. Successful leaders stand on the shoulders of strong teams!
W2W: What is the best advice you have received?
Mother Teresa said to me that the best way to give back to the world that has given us so much is to use your own hands. I hope to live my life like that, in service to and for those around me who need my hands of help.
W2W: What words of wisdom would you offer to other women?
Don’t let anybody define you. Learn who you are and define yourself! How do you learn yourself? By learning how YOU fit into the world around you. Expose yourself to different people, places, scenarios, experiences and contemplate who you are and how you feel in those circumstances. We are creatures of the planet and we are connected to the world we live in. That world is vast and includes all kinds of living beings, living spaces, living circumstances that are fluid and dynamic. If we can understand our connection to the world surrounding us, then our thoughts, our feelings, our actions, our sheer presence suddenly has relevance and meaning and it empowers and uplifts us as women, as citizens, as humans to believe in ourselves and our significance and contribution to this world.
What do you consider women’s main asset?
Our ability to nurture and empathize, which makes us excellent at establishing and maintaining meaningful and genuine relationships
with others, be it with our partners, children, friends, community members, employees, employers, coworkers, customers…the list goes on and on. From thousands of years of tending, listening, and paying attention, we women can understand the human experience of others, and this poises us to grow long-lasting and healthy relationships with others that help drive our own success in the world.
W2W: What are the most valuable ways in which women can support each other?
This can best be answered in the words of one of my favorite poets, Rumi, in his poem LET’S LOVE EACH OTHER: Let’s love each other, let’s cherish each other, my friend, before we lose each other.
You’ll long for me when I’m gone. You’ll make a truce with me.
So why put me on trial while I’m alive?
Why adore the dead but battle the living? ….
We as women must recognize and respect the bond of sisterhood we are in together. We must find and feel the love in our hearts for one another, not try to compete or bring down or squash our fellow sisters. Have empathy for a struggling sister, have respect for a rising sister, link arms with a sister who is in your path, and hold out a hand for one who has fallen behind you. There is power in numbers and only by being tightly connected to each other can we show the world the power of SHE.
W2W: What is your favorite mantra, favorite saying or words that keep you grounded?
Buddha’s words: "Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it." I spend my life trying to always learn who I am, what I dream, and what I believe I can and want to accomplish, and then after firmly inserting those thoughts in my brain, I then steadfastly work to give life to those thoughts. I don’t always put a time frame on my dreams—I just make sure that I never forget them so every day becomes my personal quest to get to where I envision.
W2W: Why do you believe W2W is important for the community?
W2W provides women with a sense of community, shared experiences, emotional support and practice advice. It empowers our community women to come together and remind us of our worth; develop life skills like communication, leadership and teamwork; foster self-confidence; advocate for change; mobilize and reform policies that benefit women; inspire girls; and uplift women’s voices. Through W2W, our local girls get to grow up seeing our strong women come together and become change-makers for their families and communities and aspire to be the same and do the same.
I am so honored to be chosen as a Woman2Know, and I hope that those who know me get to see my passion for living a life of service and purpose so that I can leave a positive imprint on the world. I also hope that Mother Teresa is looking down on me and is proud of who I have become and what I have done with the hands that God gave to me. 2

A Healthy Movement Since 2013
As a gastroenterologist, I take care of all kinds of patients with varying degrees of health. I spend each and every day educating them on the critical importance of diet and nutrition on digestive health and the ability to prevent disease just by what one does and does not put into one's mouth.
But I have found that lecturing patients is only so effective.
I wanted instead to create a way to collectively celebrate the beauty of wellness and to inspire people to eat and live better and motivate them to make positive, healthy behavioral and lifestyle changes and to understand the wealth of resources in our community to help them on their journey. Thus, the Guts & Glory Digestive and Wellness Expo was born!
The Guts & Glory Digestive and Wellness Expo is a free community-wide celebration of health for all ages. It showcases a farmers’ market, educational booths, fresh locally sourced food, fitness zones, yoga, massage and wellness experts, and more. Over 100 vendors spanning all dimensions of health and well-being engage event attendees with interactive demonstrations. The expo aims to provide people with health knowledge and to empower them to take action to live healthier lives, becoming beautiful from the inside, out, because we believe beauty starts on the inside.
Guts & Glory has also expanded into a universal and all-encompassing panorama of not just individual physical health resources but also features:
• Animal health: The relationship with our pets and wildlife
• Cultural health: Embracing the diverse community we live in, immersing in unique customs and practices of other cultures, and learning and embracing cultural differences
• Environmental health: The relationship with our external world and out planet
• Mental health: The importance of maintaining a strong mindset and taking care of our emotional well-being
• Nutritional health: Creating a positive relationship with food and making clean dietary choices whenever possible
• Societal and community health: The relationships with one another despite differences, and the relationships we have with our brave First Responders
• Spiritual health: the relationship with our faith and belief systems
Every September, we create a block party with an open design on the beautiful campus of Penn State Berks, and we use all the senses to inspire and motivate! Attendees see the colorful fruits and vegetables, listen to the festive music, smell the aromatic essential oils, feel the tactile satisfaction of a back massage, move
their body on a spin bike or flow with yoga, and taste delicious, sweet and savory but guilt-free healthy food. You cannot attend and not be struck by an intense desire to live better when you experience how beautiful healthy looks, sounds, smells, feels, and tastes!
It is also a wonderful networking event between vendors, community visitors and volunteers. Everyone there wants to be there to learn, celebrate, and smile. It's a PEOPLE experience expo that allows all of us to come together and celebrate life and health!
When I created this event 11 years ago, I had no idea it would become an annual event that grew bigger and bigger every year! I am incredibly touched by the love and community support this grassroots endeavor has garnered. I am particularly grateful for the loyal and generous support of Penn State Health St. Joseph, who believed in this project from the beginning and advocated for its existence in our community. They offer constant support and remain our title sponsor since our inception.
A massive hive of loyal supporters, followers, team members, volunteers and community friends are responsible for our longevity and success. Year after year, the expo has expanded the minds, and hopefully improved the lives of many and we will continue our work to inspire our community members to not succumb to illness, but rather embrace their control over their wellness.
The Guts & Glory Digestive and Wellness Expo hopes to continue to capture interest; educate the health conscious and health curious; and improve the health of our community by promoting healthy behavioral changes for years to come!

My name is Lourdes Peralta
and for the last 9 years I have owned Sarai Variety Flower Shop. My career as a florist came out of pure necessity as a struggled to find employment upon my arrival from the Dominican Republic in New York more than 30 years ago.
I began working at a flower shop and began learning my craft. I later purchased that business and ran it successfully until the recession and was forced to move to Pennsylvania to start over. I landed in the City of Reading with a vision and determination to open a florist
When I came to this small town, after spending so many years in New York, it actually felt bigger because I did not know many people and some of the people I encountered were not believers of my vision. I was told my business wasn’t going to last, that I was wasting my time and my money and that I wasn’t going to find support from this community.
Well, I am glad I did not listen.
What I did find was a small set of people that wanted to not only help my business but also wanted to help me become a better business person and a better woman. As a mother and a wife, life is already challenging and adding business owner to my resume was a challenge on its own. I was able to find refuge in others who were going through the same struggles as I was and learned to lean on each other for support. I was then finding myself in groups of powerful women and men in this community that exemplified self-love and giving back to the community.
shop not only because it was my passion but also because I saw a need to have a flower and event store focused on the large Latino community in this city.
But this story is not about my business; instead, it is about my love for collaboration and community.
When COVID happened and we could not gather, I had to think quickly on how to continue to strive. I found refuge in encouraging my clients to be creative and they began renting props from me and doing their own decor. Out of this phenomenon a number of entrepreneurs were born, creating a small community of event and party planners and decorators, cake and bakery creators, florists and photographers. We collaborate, give each other ideas, celebrate each other’s successes and support one another. This small town is not small enough for this community!
My words to you are that whether you are an established entrepreneur or just starting to think about it, don’t close yourself to the everlasting wonder of learning, because there is no worse place to be than to think that you have reached the destination of your journey. There is always more to learn, there is always more to explore and the rewards are always magical. 2
By Lourdes Peralta Founder & Owner, Sarai Variety Flower Shop
FEATURE

Empowering Women in Politics:
Women2Women & GRCA Advocacy Event Set to Inspire
and Educate
On September 12, the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance’s (GRCA) Women2Women (W2W) program partnered with GRCA’s Advocacy program for a powerful and inspiring event, Women in Politics: Their Why & How to Make Change. The gathering illuminated the role of women in politics and public policy, highlighting personal journeys, motivations and strategies for driving meaningful change. Beyond sharing the stories of inspiring women, the event equipped attendees with valuable tools for making informed political decisions.
Empowering Women in Leadership and Civic Engagement
This collaboration between W2W and GRCA’s Advocacy program emphasized their shared mission to empower women in leadership and civic engagement. With women often facing unique challenges in entering the political arena, this event bridged the gap, offering insights into navigating public service roles.
It was designed not just for those already involved in politics but for anyone considering advocacy or public leadership, providing a source of inspiration, motivation and education.
Learning from Women Who Make a Difference
At the heart of the event was a dynamic panel of female leaders who have successfully maneuvered the complexities of politics and public policy. Their stories of facing obstacles head-on and making a significant impact in their communities inspired everyone present. The panelists provided candid insights into what motivated them to pursue public service, the obstacles they had to overcome, and how they are shaping the future through public policy.
Additionally, they shared personal stories of balancing family responsibilities with public duties, breaking barriers in male-dominated fields, and finding their
voice in politics. Their success stories served not only as a testament to their resilience but as a roadmap for other women who aspire to make change in their communities. They discussed the strategies they used to drive policy changes, advocate for important issues, and influence their communities, demonstrating how women can shape the political landscape at all levels.
Equipping Attendees with Practical Civic Knowledge
While the personal journeys of the panelists were inspiring, the event also provided attendees with practical advice on civic engagement. One of the key takeaways was the importance of making informed political decisions—especially when it comes to voting. In a world where misinformation is widespread, attendees learned how to seek out reliable sources when researching candidates and policies. The panelists provided tips on identifying credible news outlets, cross-referencing information and understanding campaign messaging.
The event also offered resources for obtaining accurate voting information, registering to vote and encouraging others to participate in the electoral process. These practical tools aligned with W2W’s overarching goal of empowering women to actively participate in their communities and ensure their voices are heard through informed voting.
A Future Shaped by Women
The event was a powerful reminder of the growing influence of women in politics and their ability to reshape the political landscape. As more women step into leadership roles, they are ensuring that the voices of all community members are heard. This collaboration ensured that this event was not just about inspiring stories but also about action. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of the political process, practical tools for civic engagement and the confidence to drive meaningful change in their communities.

Women Taking the Lead THE VOTE A Follow Up
In the 2023 Winter edition of Women2Women Magazine we interviewed four of our local elected female officials to learn about their contributions to both our local and state government. A year later we caught up with each of them to see where they are and what has changed since last Fall.
Women have clearly taken on strong leadership roles around the country as issues related to women’s rights are now front and center in the 2024 Presidential election where our female Vice President seeks the highest office in the land. If elected, this will be an historic moment for the country on multiple levels.
Our four local leaders work tirelessly to advocate on the issues important to women, in alignment with millions of women around the country. Issues pertaining to women’s rights, climate change, children and families, neighborhoods, education, and a sustainable future all require work at the local, state and national levels to effectively and collectively achieve progress and change.
STATE SENATOR JUDY SCHWANK
“The state legislature’s most important job each year is to pass a state budget. I’m proud to share that the final budget we passed in July included an Employer Child Care Contribution Tax Credit, an initiative I sponsored in the Senate. This will allow employees that contribute to their employees’ child care costs to claim a tax credit beginning in 2025. The Employer Child Care Contribution Tax Credit is a valuable tool because it recognizes that both parents and employers benefit from high-quality, affordable child care services.
“I also partnered with the Berks Coalition to End Homelessness and secured $250,000 in funding to purchase a mobile shower unit for Reading and Berks County. This best practice has been successful in other parts of the country and has proven to be an innovative way to improve hygiene and connect people with critical health care and mental health resources through community partnerships. Most importantly, this project treats people with dignity and respect, providing them with the confidence they need to achieve a better quality of life. I’m proud to support this project and wholeheartedly believe it will make a positive impact on people’s lives.
“These are just two highlights from what has been a busy summer. So many exciting things are happening in our community!”
JOHANNY
CEPEDA –FREYTIZ, Reading’s State Representative and first Latina ever elected from PA District 129, Former Reading City Council President
Since the Democratic National Convention in August, Representative Cepeda-Freytiz has been tirelessly hitting the ground each day, working for the presidential campaign as well as her own re-election campaign. She shared her enthusiasm on the last day of the convention:
“The DNC was definitely over the top, and a one-of-a-kind, exhilarating and emotional experience! I was rejuvenated, refueled, reenergized and repurposed. I am grateful to have been there in the same space as so many powerful women. One of my favorite speakers was Michelle Obama. I am definitely committed and determined to work my butt off to get Kamala Harris elected and we need all hands on deck to make that happen. The time is NOW to rally for Kamala and get everyone we know on board.”

DONNA REED, Reading City Council President
“The past two years have been both interesting and challenging. Serving first as appointed, and now as elected, City Council president is really one of the honors of my life. Getting diagnosed with breast cancer in the midst of it certainly presented cause for reflection. I’ve missed very few meetings despite the lengthy treatments before and after surgery. I did openly share my diagnosis because choosing to be a public figure and holding the public trust, I felt an obligation to be forthcoming—not to elicit pity but to hope to encourage others to get health checkups.
“In 2023 and this year, I was able (at my own expense, not the taxpayers’) to travel to Reading’s sister cities of Reutlingen, Germany, and namesake Reading, Berkshire, UK. I have been heartened to meet with other leaders, especially women holding high municipal and state positions, and learn from them, both
in terms of their forms of government and their professional leadership styles. I am pleased to see increasing numbers of women running for significant office, chief among them the American presidency.
“I also hope that one day our national, state and local emphases on identity politics, in every form, fades away and voters consider the qualifications of the individuals running for office rather than their DNA composition.”
MARCIA GOODMANHINNERSHITZ,
Retired Reading City Councilor/ Director of Planning and Development, Council on Chemical Abuse/Vice President, Foundation for the Reading Pagoda
“This past decade has been a break-through time for women in leadership positions; elected positions as well as leadership roles in educational institutions, non-profits and businesses at the international, national, statewide and local levels. This growing prevalence of women in positions of authority speaks to the importance of learning from the past to prepare for the future.
“As diversity and inclusiveness expands, it is important to remember that everyone brings to the table their own perspectives. A woman cannot and should not be defined by her gender. Rather, each of us is defined by our own life experiences. However, traveling the road to equity, women have had to learn perseverance and patience. The successes women have experienced in breaking the glass ceiling serve as a foundation for future equity in leadership. The strength and fortitude of women in leadership roles can best be described by Eleanor Roosevelt, American political figure, diplomat, and activist: ‘A woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.’
“We all need to be prepared for the ‘hot water’ and be able to grow stronger together.” 2

Introducing Jackie Stiles:
The New Leader of Women2Women
When I joined GRCA 18 months ago as the Director of Membership, I embarked on a journey to understand the inner workings of our organization and learn about each department. During this time, I was introduced to the Women2Women (W2W) program and had the chance to attend the Conference & Expo on my fourth day in this new role. I was encouraged to sit at the GRCA table, greet people and meet our members. It was an unforgettable experience—one filled with vibrant
energy and passionate women. I was deeply impressed by the impact W2W had on so many professional women in Berks County. That day, I knew I wanted to be more involved. From attending Lean In Circle Information Sessions to the Evening of Empowerment, and witnessing inspiring presentations like the one from four female college presidents, I was hooked. The welcoming nature of the W2W community made me feel at home from the very beginning.
As the new leader of W2W, I am honored to step into a role shaped by the dedication and passion of so many incredible women. My vision for the next chapter of W2W is rooted in our mission to empower and
connect women throughout Berks County and beyond. I am committed to evolving the program to meet the changing needs of our community and to gaining a deeper understanding of who we are as an organization.
A significant first step in this journey is clarifying our identity—understanding our goals and the remarkable individuals who contribute to W2W. We’ve made a great start, having recently hosted a W2W Mixer for our Council, Research & Development Committee, De Mujer a Mujer Committee and the Magazine Editorial Team. This gathering allowed us to define who is at the table and their roles within W2W, establishing a strong foundation for our future initiatives.
As we look ahead, expanding networking opportunities is a top priority. By enhancing these connections, we can create more spaces for women to share experiences, support one another, and grow both personally and professionally. Whether you’re just starting your career or are an established leader, connecting with like-minded women can be incredibly empowering. For instance, I invite you to join me at the 2024 Pennsylvania Conference for Women in Philadelphia this November, where we will represent

Leadership development remains central to our mission. We are dedicated to offering workshops, mentorship programs and leadership training tailored specifically to women. Cultivating strong, confident leaders is essential for both individual success and community growth. In this spirit, we’re excited to invite you to participate in our Lean In Circles, where you can deepen your personal and professional development. We would love for you to be part of this inspiring journey.
Empowering the next generation is a goal close to my heart. To achieve this, we are focusing on building strong partnerships with the 18 school districts and four universities in Berks County. By creating opportunities for young women and girls, we aim to provide them with the tools and inspiration they need to become tomorrow’s leaders.
Advocacy for women’s issues is also high on my agenda. Topics such as work-life balance, career advancement and gender equity are crucial. W2W will continue to advocate for these issues and ensure our voices are heard.
Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. I am committed to broadening the scope of W2W to reach a wider range of women from diverse backgrounds, industries, and stages in their careers. By embracing inclusivity—such as offering translation services for our programs and events—we can build a more vibrant community where every woman feels valued and empowered.
Innovation is key to keeping W2W relevant and impactful. We are continuously exploring new ways to enhance our programs and meet the evolving needs of women in the Greater Reading area. In 2025, we are excited to focus on how AI can be used to boost productivity and streamline time-consuming tasks, providing our members with cutting-edge tools and knowledge.
Sustainability and growth are also essential for the long-term success of W2W. I will focus on securing funding, building strong partnerships and constantly evaluating and improving our offerings to ensure W2W continues to thrive.
Finally, I believe in the power of amplifying success stories. By celebrating the achievements of women in our community, we can inspire others and highlight the profound impact of W2W. I’m particularly excited about our Evening of Empowerment on October 17th, where you’ll have the chance to discover your superpower and connect with other remarkable women. I look forward to seeing you there and celebrating your achievements!
I am enthusiastic about the future of Women2Women and I am dedicated to leading this program with passion and purpose. HEALTH Beyond Numbers
My name is called, and I take a deep breath as I gather my things. Someone smiles as they open the door and welcome me, clipboard in hand. I smile back, but I know what’s coming. First the scale, then judgement, guilt. you know what you’re doing to yourself? Well, have you tried? Shouldn’t you take better care of yourself?
I imagine it’s not like this for most people. They don’t get the serious looks from their doctor, as if they are handing down a deadly diagnosis. They don’t get the “Have you tried diet and exercise?” like they’re sharing a novel new idea when I’ve heard the same thing for decades. And most of all, my guess is that most people’s health concerns aren’t written off as a side-effect of a number on a scale.
It’s a common scenario.
Go in for a sore throat, a persistent cough or a strange pain, and somehow the conversation always circles back to weight. Even when the symptoms have nothing to do with your size, the advice is almost always the same: “Have you tried losing weight?” It’s as if every symptom, every condition, is assumed to be tied to body mass index (BMI), a metric that is not only outdated but is often misleading.
For years, BMI has been used as a one-size-fits-all measurement of health. Initially developed in the 19th century, this formula calculates body mass based on height and weight, yet it fails to account for factors such as muscle mass, bone density and overall body composition. Despite these significant limitations, it continues to be used as a primary indicator of health. But as many have pointed out, health cannot—and should not—be reduced to a simple number.
Women who are obese often report feeling dismissed by healthcare providers, their legitimate medical concerns overshadowed by their weight. Instead of addressing the issues at hand, doctors may focus solely on the number on the scale. This approach not only overlooks critical health problems but also reinforces the damaging stereotype that larger bodies are inherently unhealthy.
There are countless stories of women whose symptoms were dismissed or misdiagnosed because their doctors insisted that losing weight would solve all their problems. Some have had serious conditions, such as heart disease or cancer, go undiagnosed because their weight was seen as the only issue worth addressing. This bias can not only have deadly consequences, but it’s also emblematic of a larger problem: the healthcare system’s failure to treat patients as individuals rather than statistics.
Less than five years ago, this started to change for me.
I finally found a physician who not only listened to my concerns but didn’t start our conversation with guilt and accusation. As a result, we got to a diagnosis that—as a side effect—lead to weight loss without me having to change anything I was already doing. It was a breakthrough to realize that I had been doing right all along, and that by simply adjusting something that had been off about my body I could see real change.
For women living in larger bodies, the need for advocacy is critical. It’s important to push back against a healthcare system that all too often reduces them to their size. We deserve to be heard, understood and treated with the same care and respect as anyone else. Our voices—and our health—matter.
I know what the scale will say. But I live in my body every day, and I know it has more to say than just one number. 2
