Reflections
When you are in the marketing, magazine, and events world, you are always looking six months ahead. My husband often tells me to “be more in the moment,” and I agree, but it’s not always that easy for a brain like mine. As the leaves start to change, my kids grow, and we talk about generational changes, I have to continue to remind myself to slow down.
But let me tell you why I’m sprinting into the fall season – We are wrapping up our program year for 2021 with 3 more great events plus our annual signature event, the Evening of Empowerment. We are so lucky to have Strother Gaines join us and hear his story and work on ourselves with him. This amazing man is from Kentucky, had to hide that he was gay, and only when he tried drag for the first time did he realize that he was a unicorn, dammit! Read more about him on page 6. I absolutely CANNOT WAIT to meet him in person.
This whole issue is about changes. Changing from generation to generation, the funny stumbling blocks, how certain industries have changed (think date night box instead of date night out – on page 30), and what we’ve learned from each other over time. As I read through these wonderful stories and remembrances, I again say…Rachael slow down, you’re going too fast. Savor the moments. I hope that this issue gives you the ‘pause’ you need and reminds you to revel in your stories and memories. Don’t forget to pass them down! Slow it down this season before life takes over again.

TLetter to the Editor
For the first time, we received a letter to the editor from a reader who held a different viewpoint about our article “News Media Bias – Your Guide to a Healthy News Diet.” We always value the feedback, and were so happy to hear from her. Thank you, Meg Archambault, for your viewpoints!

Learn how to use tools of actors, gamers, LARPers (Live-action Role-Playing), and drag queens to speed up your personal and professional development. Curious how to level up? Join Strother Gaines for this interactive workshop exploring the concepts of identity, growth, and goal setting through a unique lens. I promise you’ll leave knowing if you’re a tank, a healer, a wizard, or a rogue...and likely a combination of all 4. (And do you even know what that means?!)
VIP tickets include a personal bubbly and signature cocktail bar and the opportunity to meet the speaker. VIP will take place in the Museum’s Atrium.
Register at berkswomen2women.com on the event calendar. RSVP by October 11th!

You’ll learn how to let go of your fear of rejection, authentically connect with your ideal clients, and create intention without attachment (What does that mean? It’s the difference between being a "pushy creeper who won’t stop calling me " and being the "supportive and helpful resource who always checks up on me and how I’m doing!”)
We all know it takes an average of 7 “touch points” before you close a sale come to this workshop and learn how to not be perceived as a douchebag in touch points 2 through 7.

The Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) celebrated the Berks County business community at its Annual Dinner held at the Truck N Brew at Willow Glen Park on September 9th. Nearly 600 people attended the outdoor, upscale-tailgate-themed evening, which was punctuated by a keynote address from Sarah Thomas, the NFL’s first female referee.
“Our dinner was a terrific hit with our members, which was topped off with an inspirational speech by Sarah Thomas. Sarah’s down-to-earth story of a star college athlete and her groundbreaking entry into the NFL demonstrates again that hard work, tenacity and perseverance are the keys to success regardless of one’s gender or background. And with the new NFL season starting last night, the crowd loved her story and her passion for the high-profile job she will take up again Sunday at the Buffalo-Pitsburgh game,” said Jim

Family Life
What is a family ritual or tradition you started new, or continued, during the pandemic to bring your family closer together?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/240724193806-6dd14bd4f0210b60c9535716129d8df4/v1/8d65545fa07154fc4a9d280ce16754fe.jpeg)
In early March 2020 I started running after a three-year hiatus. When I would go for a run around the development my daughter, who had just turned two, would often cheer me on from the front porch and soon started asking if she could run with me. When she would join me our neighbors would cheer for her and encourage her to keep going. We started going for a family run or walk after dinner and it’s become one of our favorite things to do together. In October 2020 Madelyn and I registered for Reading Hospital Road Run and she crossed her first finish line (see photo above) with our neighbors cheering her on. Here are the things my family (husband, 18-year-old daughter, and dog) started to do during the pandemic that we didn’t do before:
• When we felt cooped up or stressed, we would get in the car with the dog and drive around the back roads of Berks County. Somehow our travels led us towards Shartlesville or Charming Forge. We discovered roads and vistas we hadn’t seen before. It’s still a way for us to decompress.
• Watching Jeopardy became a nightly ritual that was comforting and routine. It was nice to have our daughter join us and we looked forward to watching Alex Trebek and the contestants every night.
• At our daughter’s suggestion, we put a bird feeder up in the backyard and got a lot of enjoyment watching and learning to identify the different birds that visited. We even created a “bird-watching station” in the house.

When all my adult children moved home for 6+ months we had Friday night family happy hour, pizza and a round of Mexican Train Dominoes! The adult children started doing puzzles. My daughters and I learned how to golf (can’t say we can play well but we took lessons). And LOTS of hikes. Oh! And awesome fun cul de sac quarantine gathering!

What
is a humorous story you can share that shows
the difference between generations?
My husband went to three different gas stations and thought our card was denied (as he was attempting to slide the card into the slot and he needed to be “tapping” the card). Once he stopped to read the directions (which also entails him having to put his reading glasses on) he was able to get gas. I have to admit I did this the first time I used the card at the gas station after they installed the new pumps….would have been nice of me to share this piece of information with him.

FAMILY-OWNED,
Family-involved
These four words characterize the Leader family’s role in the senior living profession for more than 55 years. Last year, the third generation of our family in the person of Meredith Janeczek Mills, granddaughter of Country Meadows founders George M. and Mary Jane Leader, took on a senior leadership position in the company—chief operating officer. Meredith is one of nine members of the Leader and Janeczek families employed by Country Meadows. Five of the nine are in the third generation. Collectively the nine of us have more than 150 years of experience in healthcare. I like to say the profession is imbedded in our family genes.
So, you might say, “What’s the big deal? ” The deal is about quality and experience. My father used to say, “You pay a lot more attention to what’s happening and work harder when your name is attached to the business.” And, I might add, because we love what we do.
We understand the critical success factors in senior living and know when something is missing. Unlike providers whose corporate leadership is headquartered in another state or even on the West Coast, our family lives and works in central Pennsylvania. We can drive to every campus easily. Family members either work full-time
I was working remotely from my parent”s house one day and my grandfather, age 92, was there. He sat at the table for awhile then finally said how I have not done any work and have just been doing things on my computer! To him, working is something physical, so the idea of all my work being on a laptop was totally foreign. We had a good laugh.

GENERATIONAL HANDOFF:
What We Have Learned from One Another
As we continue to adjust to the COVID-19 era, we all want to look forward to better days, better times.
You may also be looking back, reflecting on lessons learned during the past 18+ months. And perhaps thinking about how each generation has handled the pandemic in different ways.
Like millions, I have experienced that up close and personal.
When our son Luke was born in 2005, my husband Frank and I thought about the normal milestones of Luke growing up – and up until 2019, they came as expected.
Then 2020 scrapped the “transition to adulthood” playbook we had followed.
And while we took heart in the countless articles about how the pandemic would help define his generation, it sure wasn’t the teenage existence we envisioned for this smack-in-the-middle Gen Z kid.
For Luke’s age cohort, the COVID-19 pandemic really is a generation-shaping event, much as the 2008 financial crisis and Great Recession were for Millennials. From school shutdowns and quarantines, to social distancing and high unemployment, Gen Zers like Luke are coming of age smack in the middle of cataclysmic change.
So, how would I help him navigate it – when I had a completely different perspective?
Sure, I liked knowing the “experts” thought this Gen Xer could handle this once-in-a-century health crisis well, thanks to coming of age during – among other things – the Cold War, social upheaval, and John Hughes movies.
Being the child of an amazing single mom who taught me the meaning of grit and resilience was going to pay off, I hoped. But
was I up for the challenge? (For the purposes of this article, we’ll leave out Luke’s dad, my husband Frank – a Baby Boomer through and through.)
Let’s get back to the research – which is clear: There are key differences in how different generations reacted to COVID-19.
And although no one knows for sure what the long-term consequences of the pandemic will be, experts predict it will have a lasting impact on people of all generations. While certain age groups may be less vulnerable to the health effects of COVID-19, no group has zero chance of contracting COVID-19, and the global pandemic affects everyone of all ages and all walks of life.
While we’re talking about generations, a reminder of the generational breakdown:
Baby Boomers: 1946-1964
Generation X: 1965-1979
Millennials: 1980-1994
Gen Z: 1995-2012
Back to the 16.5-year-old adolescent and his Generation X mom. As COVID-19 hit, there was the suggestion that Gen X adults are perhaps the most prepared to cope with the isolation of social distancing and quarantine. Known as the “latchkey generation,” Gen Xers learned to occupy themselves in the hours after school before their parents got home from work.
True enough, the initial COVID quarantine wasn’t a total shock to my system – being inside a lot is something I’m used to. But while I adapted to not reporting to the office, I focused a lot on how Luke was taking being out of school due to closures. Juggling my work responsibilities – I had just started a new job in January 2020 – while helping him with distance education was a challenge, to say the least.
And overall, Luke’s grades were fine throughout, and he leaned harder on social media to stay connected. Might I have asked him to put away the phone more often in “normal” times? Yes. But we both learned we could adapt to the changing circumstances and still succeed. I think it was good for Luke – whose personality tends to avoid change – to see that it’s not as scary as he might have thought.
As one of the youngest age cohorts coping with the pandemic (the oldest of which is 23 and the youngest is just 8), the concerns of Gen Z are a bit different. Luke has never seemed worried about his own health. That’s to be expected – the young feel invincible. But I was surprised to learn that he worried a lot about us and other older relatives. This concern helped him take social distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders more seriously.
How will the social, economic, and political changes that result from the pandemic affect the future of our kids – and Luke?
We may not have a clear understanding of the long-term consequences for years to come, but looking at how past events have affected previous generations may provide some clues.
Just as the Great Depression and 9/11 lead to changes in how people lived their lives, COVID-19 will most likely leave a major mark on both adults and kids.
How kids deal with this trauma depends on a variety of factors, including socioeconomic status. Economically disadvantaged children may bear the brunt of the trauma due to factors such as

food insecurity, parental stress, and decreased access to education, among other things.
While it might seem like kids are too young to really sense what is going on, research suggests that children (though they might not show it) pick up on the same general anxiety of adults.
And while we might expect kids to just move on or bounce back once the threat has passed, the reality is that it’s an experience that will help shape their growth and development. It’s vital for adults to explore ways of talking to kids about the pandemic and find ways to help manage the stress and upheaval that children are going through – a task that may be especially challenging for parents and caregivers coping with the economic consequences of COVID-19.
Ultimately, only time will tell the impact that the pandemic may have on the youngest generation of kids. We all have our own worries and past experiences that shape how we respond in the face of stress. What is important is to treat others with empathy and kindness.
Generational differences may play a role in the immediate health risk associated with the virus, but the long-term impact of the pandemic is something that will affect everyone of all ages. 2

How may the changing tax laws affect your estate plan?
A: While lawmakers in Washington, D.C., continue to debate the Biden administration’s proposed tax plan, one thing seems sure: There are going to be some changes, and they could be major. There are a number of items under examination now, but one of the biggest changes could be a significant dip in the estate, gift and generation skipping transfer tax exemption, from the 2021 rate of $11.7 million per person. The new exemption amount could take effect by December 31, leaving a great number of estates in danger of seeing significant tax hikes. If you think this could apply to your own estate planning, please reach out to me or any of our trusts and estates attorneys at Barley Snyder.

What Is Kirsten Haas Appeared on JEOPARDY!©
My 50th birthday was June 23, 2021 but June 24 was The Day. The Day I appeared on (cue music): JEOPARDY©!
A fan of JEOPARDY! since college (circa early-1990s), my quest to get on the show started in 2010 when my husband encouraged me to register for the online test. Here’s the thing: you take the online test but you don’t get results back.
You get an email saying, “YOU DID IT!” and then, you wait. I waited. Nothing happened. You can only take the online test once a test cycle so I continued to register each time I was eligible. August 2014, I got THE invitation:
Congratulations! You have been selected for a follow-up appointment at an upcoming Jeopardy! contestant search for the Philadelphia area, exclusively for those who successfully passed the online test. This is the next step in becoming a Jeopardy! contestant.
I drove to Philadelphia for a morning of JEOPARDY! testing, meeting the production staff and on-camera practice rounds. I was officially in the contestant pool for 18 months. Thank you for your time, we’ll call you.
Four years of online test taking passed before I was invited to the auditions in Washington, D.C., March 2018. I was in a group with a woman who had been trying to get on the show since they first offered the contestant test: What is 1984? Thank you for your time, we’ll call you.
I took the online test in January 2020; eight months later, I got the invitation to participate in a ZOOM audition. A day after receiving the invite, the news broke. Alex Trebek, JEOPARDY! host since 1984, passed away of pancreatic cancer.
Auditions were rescheduled for later in November and then three weeks later, I participated in ZOOM auditions including a practice round with other candidates and a short interview with contestant producer Corina Nasu. Thank you for your time, we’ll call you.
To quote Tom Petty, “The waiting is the hardest part,” but three times a charm. On February 26, 2021, contestant producer John Barra texts to ask if I had time later that day for a phone call to discuss my show application. A few hours later, I had a date in Culver City for March 24 to be a contestant on…JEOPARDY!!!!
The three weeks leading up to my taping passed quickly. On March 24, I reported to Sony Picture Studios at 7 AM that morning with a few changes of clothing (they tape the entire week of shows in one day). I received a PPE kit containing a face mask, hand sanitizer and a powder pouf (for de-shining). Camped out in the Wheel of Fortune studio (I did not see The Wheel), I chatted with my fellow contestants, not knowing which ones would become my competition.
I took a written test (to warm up my brain) and played a practice round on the set (it is a lot smaller in person than it appears on screen). The guest host was announced: Savannah Guthrie!

Since the general public was not allowed on site, we served as the audience for each other. We were led to the JEOPARDY! set by contestant coordinator Laura Guili and Clue Crew member Jimmy McGuire (a Pittsburgh native who told me his favorite Steeler is Lynn Swan). After three tapings, I was up!

I worked my way through the categories (at this point, you either know it or you don’t), not paying attention to my score, until Final JEOPARDY! And then…
Well, I flew home. I had to keep my appearance a secret for 12 weeks until I got the okey-dokey from the studio. On June 24, I got to share this incredible experience with family and friends all over (thank you, technology). From Reading to my hometown of Atlanta to family and friends on the West Coast and places inbetween, my “tribe” shared screenshots on social media and sent congratulatory texts.
How did I do? What is, I AM a JEOPARDY! contestant. (mic drop ) 2

WOMAN2KNOW
What has led you to your current career path?
When I was about eight years-old, my family visited New York City for the first time and after taking the backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall, I declared my first career choice: a Radio City Music Hall Rockette! I had started taking dance lessons that year so it made total sense to me.
I confess that I never had a plan for my professional journey; it’s kind of unfolded as I’ve gone along. One thing that I have done is to keep moving forward, using each experience as a building block from which I can take the next step.
What words of wisdom would you offer to other women?
My Poppa always said, “Question the answer!” Do not be afraid to ask. Ask what you may…ask? Ask questions. Ask for feedback. Ask for an equitable salary. Ask for the promotion. Ask for help. Ask, ask, ASK!

Meet
KIRSTEN HAAS Executive Director
Girls on the Run of Berks County
Is there an “aha” moment or experience that defines who you are?
Seven years ago, I was faced with a professional choice. Short version: stay or leave. I left.
It was the hardest decision I ever made because I kept thinking of the implications for my family, my career, everything but myself. And for months, maybe even a year or so afterwards, I questioned my decision. But in the end, it was the best thing I’ve ever done. It was best for my total health, for my marriage and even my career. I took ownership of MY skills and MY experience to move forward to the next adventures!
What is your favorite mantra, favorite saying or words that keep you grounded?
“There’s no “I” in TEAM but there’s one in GIN.” Haha! I made that one up. I’m not one for mantras but when life is seemingly not going how I think it ought to go, I think of the lines from The Beatles song, “All You Need is Love”:
There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known Nothing you can see that isn’t shown There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be
These lines remind me that every action, every person, everything and every word has a purpose and a consequence from which I can learn, grow and thrive.
What’s your mission?
Depends on the day. In Girl Scouts, you learn to leave a place in better shape than you found it. So, yeah. I want to leave places, relationships, the world in better shape.
What do you consider women’s main asset?
The ability to take the 30,000 foot view of situations and then gradually drill down to the necessary details to take on issues and solve problems.
What do you consider women’s main threat?
In taking that 30,000 foot view, we often forget to consider our own needs and wants. Then when we do, we think ourselves selfish for doing so.
What three things do you recommend that contribute to your success?
a. Tell truth to power.
b. Be curious.
c. Laugh. A lot.
How do you want to be perceived/remembered?
Well, not for the time I walked into a sliding glass door. Although it was funny and a lot of people laughed. So, yes. I want to be remembered for making people laugh (even if it is at me).
Why are you proud to work at Girls on the Run Berks?
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/240724193806-6dd14bd4f0210b60c9535716129d8df4/v1/ff7519f2b0a8fc8f4892007c073124ff.jpeg)
I am so excited to be in a position to promote female empowerment. When we think of empowerment, we tend to assume it only begins in adulthood. WRONG! Girls start hearing “the voices” at a young age, telling them what they are bad at, what they can’t do, who they can’t be, who they should be. Maybe even younger now than when I was a kid due to the ever-present social media. These voices sometimes even come from your own family and friends. If I let the voices I heard win, I would never have taken dance (OK, so I didn’t make the Rockettes but I can still do a mean high-kick!) or gone out for swim team. I would never have gone for my graduate degree in journalism. I would not have had a 20-year career in metals (NOT at all an area in which I even dreamed of working). I would not have had the courage to make a career 180 and enter the non-profit world. I would
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/240724193806-6dd14bd4f0210b60c9535716129d8df4/v1/5b0ebbeafd4c2c76578e15d52d27c14a.jpeg)
not have moved away from home. I would not have taken up running or triathalon or wakeboarding.
I have in fact done ALL of these things and more because I recognized it didn’t matter if I was clumsy (I prefer to think of myself as not concentrating on walking) or wasn’t fast (the tortoise ALWAYS finishes…even if it is last) or can’t recite all the digits of pi (I can balance my checkbook and that counts for a lot). What matters is that I throw myself whole-heartedly into everything that interests me and what happens, happens. Success is not about achievement. Success is about acquiring knowledge and applying it to make yourself a better person. In doing so, you become a better friend, a better teammate and a better community member.
I get to put this philosophy into action for this organization and it gives me the giggles and all the feels. I’m honored to have been a substitute COACH in my first year at Girls on the Run Berks and I’ve seen first-hand the delight on girls’ faces when they make new friends or run more laps than they did the previous week or, well, all of it!
Any other information you’d like to add about the initiatives at Girls on the Run.
Pandemic, schemdemic!
Seriously, the pandemic upset school routines, upset social lives and increased isolation for so many girls. We continued to offer Girls on the Run during the pandemic, so shout-out to all the girls, schools, community sites and Coaches who stuck it out with us last year! You. Kick. Asphalt!
However, it was difficult for us to reach a lot of girls. Good news is we are regaining our strength for 2021-2022 and that includes a return to full in-person seasons AND a return to our 5K celebration…IN-PERSON! Look for us out and about in the community. If you have a girl in grades 3 through 8, reach out to me to find out more about the program and sign her up! If you want to make an impact on the girls of our communities, don’t think about it, do it! Become a Coach! Volunteer!
Girls on the Run is not only about empowerment for girls but we are also about inclusion, diversity, equity and access.
We are HERE for ALL girls. 2

The Cocoa Bomb… BOMB
As a solid Gen-Xer, I tend to eschew popular trends particularly when said trends appear to add nothing useful to my existence. One such trend that failed to launch for me is…The Cocoa Bomb. The tale begins at Christmas as my friend drops off a tin of homemade holiday delights. On December 29…well, I’ll let the Facebook posts speak for itself. Please note Comments (the original string contains 33) edited for hilarity and posters kept anonymous lest I be subjected to additional ridicule:
(Me) Cocoa bomb fail. Did not know you are supposed to drop them in hot milk...perhaps if I consulted the interweb...
(Friend) What DID you drop it in?
(Me) …Nothing. The giveaway was when Chris bit into it & cocoa powder went all over the coffee table. (23 laughing emojis “Liked” this comment)
(Friend) I'm laughing at the husband biting into the hot cocoa bomb
(Me) yes! And now he won’t let me throw away the rest of it...”it’s a waste of all that cocoa!”
At this point, the bestower of the cocoa bomb comments with a link to a YouTube video which in her defense, she also included in the holiday card accompanying the treat:
(Me) LOL! I thought you gave me the website to see how to make them, not how to eat them. 2

7 Ways to Increase your Digital Presence with a GRCA Membership
There are multiple ways your company can increase their digital presence with a Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) membership. Your company’s digital presence is how your business appears online when searched on the internet. Increasing your digital presence can lead to more connections, customers and sales.
1.Utilize the GRCA Member Information Center
All GRCA members have access to the Member Information Center (MIC) via a username and password. Members have the ability to update or add to their member listing. An updated business listing allows members and the Greater Reading community to access all the information they need about your business. Once logged into your MIC, members have access to list/publish the following items: Press Releases • Jobs • Member2Member Discounts
2. Submit a Chamber Spotlight Feature Chamber Spotlight is an opportunity that GRCA provides members — starting at the Catalyst level and for member non-profits — to share their story through text and images/video. It is a feature story about your business that can be told in written editorial (with visuals) or a video. The Chamber Spotlight is then published on GRCA’s website and shared via our Member Minute e-newsletter.
3. Choose to do a Social Takeover on GRCA’s Facebook
GRCA members — starting at the Innovator level — have the opportunity to do a social takeover on GRCA’s Facebook page. A social takeover consists of either going Live on Facebook or providing images and messages for GRCA to post to its Facebook page of 5,600+ followers.

Those interested in a social media takeover and it is not part of your membership package, a takeover is available at a discounted advertising rate. For more information, visit our Sponsorship & Advertising page at greaterreading.org/ sponsorships-advertising/.
4. Maintain an Active Social Media Presence
GRCA actively follows all its members on multiple social media channels. Daily we share members' social posts via our Instagram and Facebook stories further amplifying their message to our 7,500+ followers on those platforms. We enjoy sharing our members' events and news across our social channels to help you get the most out of your membership.
5. Share Your News with Us
GRCA loves sharing its members’ news! Members have the ability to share with us their anniversaries, open houses/ribbon cuttings and more. We then share their news in our Member Minute e-newsletter, delivered to an audience of more than 3,500.
6. Pitch us a Story for Commerce Quarterly Commerce Quarterly is a quarterly publication written by GRCA members and for GRCA members. GRCA members are able to pitch story ideas to get their company featured in an upcoming edition. This publication is available in both a digital and printed format.
7. Highlight Your Business by Advertising with Us
GRCA offers its members discounted rates on high-profile, cost-effective ways to digitally advertise. Digital advertising is available via our member e-newsletters, social media or website. To learn more about these exclusive opportunities, visit our Sponsorship & Advertising page at greaterreading.org/sponsorships-advertising/.

100+ Ladies Attended Lobsterfest!
After two years of not being able to sit together and crack lobsters, we were back! With over 100+ women in attendance, specialty drinkware was brought by groups as they laughed their way through the front doors.
Lobsters and butter didn’t hit clothes (because BIBS), the macaroni and cheese was coveted, and the staff at Fish Pond West were fabulous as always. Thank you to everyone who attended and we can’t wait to see you next summer!

The Future of Telemedicine
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/240724193806-6dd14bd4f0210b60c9535716129d8df4/v1/f288cdfabb92e611f516df44225130f7.jpeg)
As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, hospitals and health systems are working to expand and enhance their Virtual Care Options for the benefit of their patients and communities.
“When COVID-19 arrived many health systems expanded their telehealth options out of necessity,” said Mary Bilotta, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BC, CEN, System Clinical Manager Telehealth at Tower Health. “We needed to keep providing care in a way that minimized the need for in-person interactions. This helped to keep patients and staff healthy and safe. Video visits with primary and specialty care physicians were offered and patients quickly adapted to the new model of care. Many patients prefer the virtual visit option because there is no travel time, no parking, and no wait time in the office setting.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic Tower Health expanded their virtual health portfolio with the addition of telepsychiatry, teleneurology, and Virtual ICU services. These services connect medical experts within the health system, allowing them to monitor patients and develop a treatment plan. It also allows for patients to stay at the hospital in their community, close to family. Most recently, through Tower Health Urgent Care, a Virtual Urgent Care option has been added. This service is available 24/7 and patients are guaranteed to see a physician in 10 minutes or less from a desktop or mobile device, no matter the time of day.
An anticipated area of growth in virtual care is “Remote Patient Monitoring” (RPM) for patients with chronic health problems including heart failure, COVID-19, obesity, and diabetes. RPM
uses Bluetooth technologies to collect medical data electronically and securely transmits that information to the patient’s healthcare teams and providers for evaluation and recommendations. This type of service allows a provider to continue to monitor a patient after they are discharged to their home or a care facility. All information goes directly into the patient’s medical record and is monitored by the care team.
Ms. Bilotta said, “These programs are designed to help keep people engaged in their wellness and to keep them at home where they are comfortable and out of the hospital. When patients regularly monitor themselves, we can identify changes or a decrease in health status almost immediately. This allows physicians to make adjustments and recommendations to the treatment plan before patients become so ill, they might require hospitalization.”
Patients participating in the RPM program are provided everything they need including a Bluetooth cellular-connected device, as well as necessary devices such as a scale, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, glucometer, or thermometer, as needed for care of their chronic disease. The program does not require internet service or personal cellular service. A computer and/or cell phone is not required to participate.
Michelle Trupp, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, added, “We are always evaluating additional opportunities for virtual care that will help improve, and increase, access to healthcare for some of our more vulnerable populations and the communities we serve. The addition of these services

breaks down barriers to care while encouraging patients to be an active member in their healthcare team.”
“The goal with all telemedicine services is to meet patients when, and where, they need care,” Ms. Bilotta shared. “If we’ve learned anything over the course of the pandemic it’s that telemedicine is here to stay. Both patients and providers appreciate the flexibility these services can provide.”
Individuals with specific questions regarding telemedicine services should contact their physician or advanced practice provider to determine the best options. Individuals experiencing chest pain, stroke symptoms, or having a medical emergency should call 911 immediately. 2

Schools are always evolving, but over the past year and a half, during the pandemic, they have had to scramble in order to provide the best and safest education possible, under very difficult circumstances.
The road hasn’t been easy, but schools have been working hard to create protocols and procedures that will be most beneficial for students. Every school in Pennsylvania is currently required to submit a “Health and Safety Plan” to the state in order to show that they have thought through important things such as hygiene practices, physical distancing, community resources, and cleaning and ventilation protocols. In addition, schools have had to rethink everything from testing to technology to contingency plans if there were to be an emergency.
With so many students learning from home for at least some of the time last year, schools quickly devised ways to impart information virtually. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a way for students and teachers to connect. Luckily, prior to the pandemic, many schools had already been utilizing on-line educational platforms such as Schoology, and students in many districts had been using devices such as chrome books, allowing them to do schoolwork at home well before the pandemic took hold.
With these technological advances and the precedent of students spending a good portion of the past year and a half learning at home, some have wondered if certain traditions such as “snow days” will be preserved or will they become relics of the past. It depends. Pennsylvania schools are required to have 180 days of
instruction built into their calendars. Berks County schools have always included “weather makeup” or “snow makeup” days into their calendars as well, implying that there still may be traditional “snow days,” where students would not have to “report” to school, even electronically, on a day of inclement weather and that they would make up the day later in the year.
However, schools have also been encouraged to apply to the PA Department of Education for five Flexible Instruction Days or “flex days” per year, “to be used as an alternate approach to delivering instruction if a circumstance arises that prevents instruction in a customary manner.” In other words, if there’s an emergency of any kind, including a weather-related one such as snow, the superintendent can designate that day as a “flex day,” which would mean students stay home and “report” to school and their teachers electronically. Such a day would count as an official school day, and if students don’t check in with their teachers, or complete their assignments, they would be marked absent.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/240724193806-6dd14bd4f0210b60c9535716129d8df4/v1/c96382516011183ab90f2b1b13b8d527.jpeg)
It is possible that a school could use a “flex day” every time that there is inclement weather, thereby eliminating the cherished “snow day” for a given school year, however, time will tell. Dr. Kimberly Minor, Superintendent of Exeter Township School District, stated at a recent board meeting,“We don’t have the intention of never having a snow day here at Exeter again, although you could theoretically do that.”
Despite the many changes that education is facing during these unprecedented times, some traditions like the cherished “snow day” are going to stay…at least for some schools…and for the moment. 2

OH MY! THE CHANGING
WORKPLACE
As the COVID-19 pandemic expanded across the United States, businesses shut their doors, sending their workforce home. Some industries opened back up, having been deemed essential, others furloughed workers and still others relegated their employees to work from home (WFH) for a period of time. Over time, some businesses made the decision to become fully-remote operations or adopted a hybrid work model. Other businesses only recently returned to full in-person work. I checked in with three local business women to get their perspectives on the future of work:
• Laurie Dawkins, Partner/Business Developer at Workplace Talent Solutions
• Kristi Gage-Linderman, Owner/COO of Gage Personnel and Chair of the Berks County Workforce Development Board
• Cindy Gerber Tomlinson, Founder/President of Groove Consulting LLC
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/240724193806-6dd14bd4f0210b60c9535716129d8df4/v1/2e896f180cab5024bfdbbec74f7ebb10.jpeg)
What workplace changes do you see as local businesses return to work?
Laurie Dawkins: There is some resistance to returning to the office, especially for a typical five-day work week. Many people found worklife balance in the past year and they don’t want to give that up.
Kristi Gage-Linderman: For production workers, there are no WFH options so it’s more or less business as usual. For corporate workers though, there is a recognition of the need for flexibility.
Are you seeing an increase in hybrid or remote workplaces?
Dawkins: There is definitely an increase in adoption of hybrid work models as employers consider what tasks can be done remotely versus what roles can't.
Gage-Linderman: Yes, and in some unexpected places. For instance, we’re seeing call center work move to a WFH model.
What challenges are you hearing about from employers in regards to the workplace?
Dawkins: Employers are now faced with employees who have different priorities and as they seek to implement flexibility, they have to create new or modify existing policies, procedures, the works.
Gage-Linderman: Employers are still exploring how to manage a hybrid/remote workplace. How do you communicate? How do you build and promote culture? How do you manage expectations?
Cindy Gerber Tomlinson: Employers are finding an increased need to pay attention to the mental health of their workforce whether that employee is remote or is returning to the office.
How are workplace changes impacting job-seekers?
Dawkins: People want to work for someone who cares.
Gage-Linderman: People are looking for opportunities that offer personal flexibility.
Tomlinson: People have taken a step back from work and asked, “How does my work line up with my life?” There are more opportunities for remote work now; physical location may no longer be a limit. Employees are becoming more courageous in seeking roles that fit their definition of balance and satisfaction.
What are your general observations about the impact of the pandemic on the traditional workplace?
Dawkins: I feel like work in the U.S. was heading in the hybrid/ remote direction in the coming years but the pandemic forced the issue. As businesses adapt, they will be able to keep employees and attract new talent.
Gage-Linderman: The traditional workplace isn’t going away but employers can realize the benefits of adapting to the needs of their current and future employees. Employers need to be aware of employee well-being.
Tomlinson: I think there has been a fundamental shift in the foundations of the workplace and the way forward is to embrace change as opportunity. 2

We all know that business has changed due to the pandemic. Many industries were hit harder than others, and then there were the businesses who changed their sales model completely to meet people where they were… at HOME.
My husband and I love date nights. We love trying new local restaurants and bars, see bands, walk around festivals…you name it, we love it. And I personally love learning new things. Not just new experiences, but learning things about my partner (and even myself).
One day scrolling Instagram I see an advertisement for a DATE BOX from Happily.co and it was 50% off. Why would I not check it out? Long story short, this company produces date nights in a box that get sent directly to your door step for a very fair monthly charge.
In the past year we have laughed and tried so many new things including:
Candle making (super easy!)
Cruise ship escape room (we made it)
