March is National Women’s History Month when we recognize all women and their accomplishments and deeds whether in the home, business or our community. The Berks Women’s History Alliance is once again partnering with the Berks History Center to promote these women. This event . recognizes women who were and currently are. This project was first introduced in 2007 by the Berks Women’s Commission and showcased at their Women's History Museum at . the Goggleworks. The Berks Women’s History Alliance has now updated this project since we know there has continued to be more Berks County women who have become FIRST in their field. It doesn’t matter what field or year they held this position; just so they were the first female to run it, manage it, own it or head it up. We celebrate to remind ourselves of the journey taken to achieve these accomplishments and to honor these trailblazing women who continue to lead the way. To the women of Berks County, we thank you. You can take great pride and satisfaction for your part in recording these accomplishments so future generations continue to see “the best is yet to be!” 28 Women2Women | Winter 2022

March is selected as the month for observing Women’s History Month to correspond with International Women’s Day. The actual celebration grew out of a weeklong celebration organized by the school district of Sonoma, CA in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa. A few years later, the idea had caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
