PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
WELCOME TO WEST PALM BEACH!
S
eptember 22-24, NHLA will host our Annual Convention & Exhibition Showcase in West Palm Beach, Florida. This convention will be like no other convention we have ever held. The Exhibition facilities are the largest and most convenient we have ever provided. There will be more exhibitors than ever, and with your participation, the convention could be the largest gathering we have ever had. NHLA is proud to announce the Rossi Group as the 2021 Premier Sponsor. A special thank you goes out to Ted Rossi and his team for their continued support of the Association and the Annual Convention. Our industry is enjoying the best business climate in our lifetimes. We have never seen a market when average industry market prices have risen north of 50% in less than a year. Come and celebrate our mutual success at the 2021 NHLA Annual Convention. In good markets, there are great opportunities for you and your businesses. There is no greater opportunity for Networking in our industry than what will happen at West Palm Beach. Where else can you interact with so many Hardwood Industry leaders and experts in such a short period of time for so little cost? Additionally, NHLA is focused on providing values that will help make you and your businesses better. You will find this philosophy in the theme that runs through the entire event. The educational sessions are all tailored to helping you improve your performance regardless of your position in your company. We have an outstanding slate of speakers. Our keynote speaker at the Opening Session on September 23rd at 8 am is Steve Robinson, Former Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer of Chickfil-A. He will share the story of Chick-fil-A’s evolution into one of the world’s most beloved, game-changing, and profitable brands. From the creation of the “Eat Mor Chikin” campaign and the decision to stay closed on Sundays to the creation of the company’s corporate purpose, Robinson provides a front-row seat to the innovative marketing, brand strategies, and advertising that created a culture that customers describe as, “where good meets gracious.” Thank you to Northwest Hardwoods for sponsoring Steve Robinson. Our second keynote speaker is Dan North, Chief Economist for North America at Euler Hermes. He will speak on September 24th

at 8:30 am during the General Session. Dan’s list of credentials is long and of distinction. He has a unique way to communicate the state of our economy, key factors driving it and relate what the future may hold in a manner that all of us will be able to easily comprehend. We know this economy will not stay in this heated state forever. Dan will give you insights to prepare for the inevitable decline that will happen. Thank you to Pennsylvania Lumberman’s Mutual for sponsoring Dan North. After holding our spring Board of Director’s Meeting at the same location in late April, I cannot wait to get back to the “West Palm Beaches.” The State of Florida has been out front of our Nation, working hard to safely open business and build back their economy. You will find a refreshing atmosphere amongst businesses, employees, and the people of Florida. They are glad and excited for NHLA to be in their fine city. At the end of May, Palm County, Florida, lifted its mask mandate. This means we will have a mask-free convention! Wahoo! However, I encourage you to get vaccinated and attend the convention for the health of all attendees. The convention presents the opportunity for one of your best investments of the year. In closing, let me give you a takeaway to think about. The majority of us work to support ourselves and our families. What determines what we receive for our work? Most of us and our employees want more but do not know what will cause a better result. The following quote is pretty much the story of my life and the success of my family. “Worry about what you give instead of what you get, and you will get more than enough.” What you give and the result from what you give is the key to increased success, whatever success is to you. You will be blessed by the value of what you give to your company, customers, vendors, family, employees, or someone in need. Best wishes for your continued health and success. May God bless you, your families, and your business in 2021.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
OPENING SESSION KEYNOTE SPEAKER Steve Robinson Thursday, September 23 at 8am Sponsored by Northwest Hardwoods
The 2021 NHLA Convention will kick-off with an incredible Opening Session featuring Former SVP & Chief Marketing Officer of Chick-fil-A, Steve Robinson - sponsored by Northwest Hardwoods. Steve will take us back in time to showcase how the leadership team took Chick-fil-A from a fledgling, primarily mall-based brand to the global powerhouse it is today. Touching on the role principles, creativity, and culture play in building a brand with unmistakable advertising and a fanatic base of loyal customers, Robinson helps groups grappling with questions like, “How do I stand out in a crowded marketplace?” and “How do I attract and retain the right employees and customers?” Audiences leave Robinson’s talk with a better understanding of what it takes to build and maintain an iconic brand position in the global marketplace. During his thirty-four-year tenure, Steve was integrally involved in the company’s steady then explosive growth from 184 stores and $100 million in annual sales in 1981 to more than 2,100 stores and more than $6.8 billion in annual sales in 2015. After beginning his Chick-fil-A career as the director of marketing, Steve went on to serve as vice president of the department before becoming chief marketing officer – responsible for overseeing marketing, advertising, brand development, menu development, and hospitality strategies. As chief marketing officer, Robinson was both a witness and participant in the company's remarkable development into an indelible success. Now exclusively represented for lectures by Leading Authorities speakers bureau, he shares the story of Chick-fil-A's evolution into one of the world's most beloved, gamechanging, and profitable brands. From the creation of the “Eat Mor Chikin” campaign and the decision to stay closed on Sundays to the creation of the company's corporate purpose, Robinson provides a front-row seat to the innovative marketing, brand strategies, and advertising that created a culture that customers describe as "Where good meets gracious.” Prior to joining Chick-fil-A, Steve was the director of marketing for Six Flags Over Georgia theme park in Atlanta, Georgia. This role was preceded by marketing positions at two other Six Flags properties and communications manager at Texas Instruments. In addition to serving on Chick-fil-A’s board of directors (2016-2018), Steve serves on several boards for organizations and ministries, including FamilyLife, Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Atlanta, Links Players International, Atlanta Hall Management & College Football Hall of Fame, and the National Football Foundation. He holds an associate degree in business administration from Faulkner State Junior College, a Bachelor of Science in marketing from Auburn University, and a master’s in advertising from Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Steve and his wife, Dianne, have two children and four grandchildren. W W W. N H L A .C O M

UNCOVERING THE INNOVATION HIDDEN IN YOUR COMPANY with Bob Graham, CEO of Breakthrough Solutions
Successful companies are innovative companies. They find and solve increasingly difficult problems because their company culture supports them as they explore and attempt new solutions. Companies that find innovative solutions plant the seeds of innovation in their entire operation – from the floor to management and everywhere in between. In this interactive and engaging workshop, Bob Graham will show participants how to plant those seeds and how to harvest the fruits to create innovative solution to an existing problem. Participants will discover: • Why innovation is hard for leaders • The Innovator’s Mindset • What discourages and defeats employees trying to be innovative • Three questions to ask to encourage innovation • How to support your most solution-minded employees • How to hire with an eye toward innovation Bob Graham is CEO of Breakthrough Solutions and a co-founder of the Renegade Success Network, which provides entrepreneurs, business owners and leaders with guidance and support to carve their own unique pathway to success. A former lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, Graham has worked with startups and established businesses on communication, leadership, marketing, operations and scaling. In addition to keynoting and speaking to groups ranging from McCormick & Co. to the National Institute of Health and the Project Management Institute, he also has written several books, including The 55 Soft Skills That Guide Employee and Organizational Success (2017) and The Renegade Way (2021).

NEW MARKETS FOR HARDWOOD
with Dr. Henry Quesada, Professor and Extension Specialist Department of Sustainable Biomaterials Virginia Tech This seminar will provide insights and updates on alternative markets for hardwood products including structural, dimension, mass timber, access mats, and thermal modification markets. Markets for hardwood lumber in the US have been centered in non-structural applications such as flooring, furniture, tool handles, and moldings. Over the last 10 years alternative opportunities for hardwood products have emerged such as structural, mass timber, exterior cladding, access mats, and decking markets. However, there are supply chain, manufacturing, regulations, and marketing barriers that prevent hardwood species to gain or increase access to these markets. The seminar will focus on specific supply chain, manufacturing, and marketing strategies to overcome these barriers in order to gain access to these new alternative markets. Henry Quesada has been with Virginia Tech since 2008. He focuses his work on supply chain, manufacturing, and markets aspects for renewable-based material industries such as the hardwood industry. Henry is a native of Costa Rica who enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and biking.

THE NEW NORMAL? HARDWOOD EXPORTS IN A CHANGED WORLD with Mike Snow, Executive Director of AHEC Sponsored by Kuehne + Nagel, Inc. While the worst of the COVID pandemic appears to be behind us in the United States and other mature markets, the situation is much less clear in the emerging world. Growing demand in the housing and renovations markets in the US and Europe are hampered by global supply chain issues and uncertainty in some of our most important overseas markets. This presentation will attempt to put 2021 year-to-date hardwood exports into historical perspective and discuss the macro issues, such as trade integration (or lack thereof), competing fiber supplies and global GDP growth that will determine the health of our export markets in the short to medium term. Mike Snow has been the Executive Director of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) since 1999, where he oversees the Council’s promotional programs around the globe and manages AHEC’s overseas offices in Europe, Mexico, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and China. Previously, he served as AHEC’s Program Manager for Europe, China, and Japan. Mr. Snow holds a Master’s Degree in International Economics from the George Washington University and a BA in Developmental Economics from the University of Wisconsin. Before joining AHEC, Michael served as a Consultant on international education outreach programs for the National Geographic Society and the Smithsonian Associates. He spent several years in Seville, Spain, teaching economics courses in English and Spanish for the University of Wisconsin.

EZLOG Company, Inc.

hat do steel log staples, the NHLA Convention, and a $2.8 million country ham have in common? NHLA member EZLOG Company, Inc. produces steel log staples. And the ham? Well, it isn’t an ordinary ham. It’s a Broadbent Traditional Cured Ham. Broadbent hams have been sold at charity auctions for as much as $2.8 million, but you can win one at the NHLA Convention by simply registering at the EZLOG Company’s booth! EZLOG produces Hog Nose Steel Log Staples (hence, the drawing for a ham). They are a part of S&D Holdings, which began with Spalding & Day Tool and Die and was started in 1947 by Dan Day’s father, Jay Day, and his uncle, Bill Spalding. Dan recalls, “I already had a business that dealt with sheet metal, and I had a friend in the logging business. He noticed that there had to be a better way to stop end splits on logs, so we designed the Hog Nose Staple.

2021 NHL A ANNUAL CONVENTION & E XHIBIT SHOWCASE
Since I was already producing sheet metal components for all types of businesses, steel staples fit nicely into my business plan.” The Hog Nose™ Staples are designed to fight end splits on logs and are primarily used on high-end veneer logs. There are a lot of products out there to control end splits, so Dan knew he had to design something unique, saying, “Basically we built a better mousetrap; a staple that W W W. N H L A .C O M
“In my opinion, a superior product often sells itself. When people use Hog Nose Staples, they become loyal customers.” — Dan Day works better than other options that would also be easy to remove without damaging the log. That’s the key. No other products are easy to remove without sawing about 3-4 inches off the end of the log or ruining your dust bi-product with plastic. Those inches add up and hurt a mill’s yield and profit margin. On top of all that, the easy removal of EZLOG Hog Nose Staples ensures saving valuable saw blades, veneer knives, and other equipment damage.” Dan continues, “Lumber mills face a problem when an end split or check on a log goes too deep into the log and catches the veneer knives. So, it can cause problems in the final processing that go beyond the loss of wood. EZLOG Hog Nose Staples™ are designed to apply pressure in the direction that you want it to go, and that’s what helps to fight the split and keep it from growing.” Mike McCrea serves as EZLOG’s Business Development Manager. He explains, “Our Hog Nose™ Staples, so named because the staple looks like the snout of a hog, are superior to other options like SIrons (SI) or plastic inserts. S-irons are not easily removed, so mills end up cutting off the end of the log. Using a SI is similar to driving a wedge at the end of the log. Yes, they will hold the crack, but sometimes they make the crack a little worse while you are installing them because they displace so much material. So, S-Irons can actually split the log more! Hog Nose Staples typically cost about 20-30% less than S-Irons, and they are more effective.” Dan adds, “While the plastic inserts are cheaper, and mills don’t necessarily have to remove them, most do because they don’t want their blades to hit the plastic. Plus, if a mill is selling their scraps as a fuel source or selling it to the pulp and paper industry, plastic is a terrible idea because they cannot sell it with plastic dust in the scrap. Also, the plastic staples do not hold as much strength as our Hog Nose™ staples, especially when working with red oak.“ A lot of different factors affect how successful a business is. Location, pricing, customer service, product quality, and awareness all play a part. Dan goes as far as to say that his secret to his success is producing a superior product. “In my opinion, a superior product often sells itself. When people use Hog Nose Staples, they become loyal customers. For example, we had to apply a small price increase on the staples due to the rising cost of steel. We were a little nervous about increasing the price, but our loyal customers remained true. Hopefully, the price increase is temporary, and W W W. N H L A .C O M
once raw materials come back down, we plan to adjust the price again to lower the cost for our customers.” EZLOG does not suffer the common problem of turning new customers into loyal customers. According to Mike, their biggest challenge is getting NEW customers through positive exposure. “We need to get our product out there for people to discover. Our biggest hurdle is to inform the industry that we provide a superior product. Mike adds, “We are very excited about the upcoming Convention. We decided to join NHLA after taking a trip to Memphis, where we were given a complete tour of the Inspector Training School and the NHLA headquarters. We love the fact that we can advertise to such a specific market and get real value for our money. Our NHLA membership and advertising have proven well worth it. That is one of the reasons we look forward to exhibiting at the 2021 NHLA Convention and Exhibit Showcase in West Palm Beach, Florida. We’ll be the booth making all the loud racket. We will be doing demonstrations on installing and removing staples, plus, we have a cool giveaway (the Broadbent World Champion ham) for people who stop by.” Dan wraps it up nicely, “The future of EZLOG is bright. We plan to spend more time on the export business because the international market is so big. We also have some possible new products on the horizon. We are looking at the rail tie industry, live edge market, and others. It’s going to be a great year for the EZLOG Company!” You can get in touch with EZLOG online at www.ezlogstaple.com or via phone at 502-637-1191. PREMIER SPONSOR ROSSI GROUP |
