Bringing Service to Life What’s Happening in the Lair? END OF THE YEAR As the school year comes to an end, our school takes the opportunity to honor and recognize meritorious individuals per grade level for academic excellence as well as extracurricular achievements. At the beginning of each assembly, Key Club officers led the students and staff members in the presentation of the colors. The assemblies took place during various periods throughout the school day on May 21st, May 22nd, and May 23rd; there was a special ceremony on May 28th in which seniors receiving scholarships were recognized. We are so fortunate to live in America and being able to do such a thing is very humbling.
LANDSCAPING Even little things, such as flowers, can make a difference. On May 18th, Key Club was able to plant flower beds in front of Solid
Foundations, a learning center here in Nacogdoches, Texas. Despite it being the morning of prom, our fearless president and outstanding senior, Jordan Palmer and Tristan Emborgo respectively, braved the early morning task, and brightened many people’s day.
TJR On May 31st, as a follow up to a previous visit, Nacogdoches Key Club attended Thomas J. Rusk Elementary School in Nacogdoches, Texas. In our first visit, we read Dr. Seuss’s books Oh The Things You Can Think and Oh The Places You’ll Go. After, we asked them to think about the places that they want to go and the things that they want to do in the future, including what they will need to do in order to achieve their goals. As cliché as it sounds, it is so important to instill goals and dreams in the youth of our country and remind them that they have the potential to do whatever they

want to as long as they believe in themselves. On our recent visit, Key Club members, including Bryce Barham, Kim Fuentes, Maggie King, Elizabeth Vineyard, and Jordan Palmer, revisited the same 3rd graders; this time we simply read different books to them and we had a blast! We plan to attend TJR at least once a month in the upcoming school year in order to continue our Elementary School Reading Program.
BAKE SALE When tragedy strikes a community, how should we respond? We have all been affected by tragedy, maybe not directly, but tragedy does affect our lives whether we are standing amongst the ruins or watching the horrific events unfold our screens in the comfort of our own home. In a time of disaster, we all need to come together and work toward rebuilding communities and do whatever we can to aid those who have lost everything. The recent tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma have devastated communities and have had a profound influence on surrounding areas including Nacogdoches. As a result, Nacogdoches Key Club had a strong desire to do something in

order to help our friends and neighbors. We wanted to do something that would raise a good sum of money in a short amount of time considering the circumstances. After receiving news of the events, we organized a bake sale and auction for teachers that occurred on Wednesday, May 29th; all of the proceeds would be donated to the victims of the recent tornadoes. It turned out to be a tremendous success! All because of our fabulous members, who generously donated their time and wonderful baked goods, and the amazing staff at Nacogdoches High School, we were able to raise over $250 for the victims.
BE BOLD We have had a very successful year! Until next school year, I hope all of you have a fantastic SUMMER and, as always, BE BOLD.
