Nat Huber, Comic Artist Zombies, vampires, witches and more. Fun, overpriced costumes and bulk bags of candy in a plastic pumpkin. Re-runs of holiday classics, orange and purple decorating the street. Halloween is almost upon us, and how else to celebrate than by indulging in some wonderfully spooky comics? Here are four recommendations from yours truly to enjoy during this festive time of year!
‘Hellboy’ - Mike Mignola A cult classic amongst superhero fans, the Hellboy character has been seen in comics, movies and video games. The comic follows Hellboy’s origin as a half-demon summoned by the Nazis and raised by the US Government to investigate and fight various supernatural entities. The series is renowned by many for being packed with horror and action, with a sprinkle of comedy to top it off. If crime dramas and slightly off-beat storytelling is your forte, give ‘Hellboy’ a look!
Comics
‘Marvel Zombies’ - Robert Kirkman + Sean Phillips The Marvel multiverse is known to hold many off the wall stories, everything from Deadpool killing everyone, to a universe where the Avengers are Looney Tunes characters. One of the strangest universes in the Marvel multiverse is ‘Marvel Zombies’. Started in 2005 by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Sean Phillips, this miniseries takes place in a world where superheroes were infected by a zombie virus. And the gory action ensued!
‘Shiver’ - Ito Junji Ito Junji is famous, or more rather infamous, in the manga community for his Lovecraftian-style body horror and outlandish premises. ‘Shiver’ is an anthology collection of some of Ito’s shorts, including a chapter from one of his most famous series ‘Tomie’. ‘Shiver’ is home to everything from a monstrous model to a patient who looks like death himself. Ito’s work will introduce you to fears you never knew you had or could even be a possibility.
‘The Promised Neverland’ - Kaiu Shirai + Posuka Demizu
The newest face on this list, ‘The Promised Neverland’ starts innocently enough. The series takes place in the walls and garden of a warm and friendly orphanage, run by the kind Mother. However, as common in manga, this quickly proves to be not the case for our young heroes: Emma, Ray and Norman. ‘The Promised Neverland’ pits our leads in a psychological game of chess to save them from the horrors that lay outside the walls of Grace Field House.

The anti-environmental rhetoric of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has encouraged such tree-clearing activities since he came into power in January 2019. In response to criticism at home and abroad, Mr. Bolsonaro announced he was banning setting fires to clear land for 60 days. The president has also accepted an offer of four planes to fight the fires from the Chilean government and has deployed 44,000 soldiers to seven states to combat. However, he has refused a G7 offer of $2.2 billion following a dispute with French President Emmanuel Macron. Next, the growth of population countries around rain forest as well as increasing worldwide demand for soybeans and resources in the Amazon. Tsukasa Kuriyama, Reporter DETAILS OF AMAZON RAINFOREST I know people who read this realized that Amazon rainforest is facing some big challenges, but I think that you don’t know about it for sure. That’s why I wrote this issue. According to the Wikipedia, the majority of the forest is contained by Brazil with 60% of the rainforest, followed by Peru with 13%, Colombia with 10%, and with minor amounts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, the Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world. It covers approximately 2.1 million square miles. This year, according to BBC NEWS on August 30th, 2019, the official figures show more than 87,000 forest fires were recorded in Brazil in the first eight months of this year. This is the highest number since 2010. However, 2019 is not the worst year in recent history. Brazil experienced more fires in the 2000s with 2005 seeing more than 142,000 fires in the first eight months of the year. Actually, forest fires are
News
common in the Amazon during the dry season, which runs from July to October. They can be caused by naturally occurring events, such as lightning strikes, but this year most are believed to have been started by farmers and loggers clearing land for crops or grazing. The fires are emitting large amounts of smoke and carbon. They have been releasing a large amount of carbon dioxide. This year is the highest since 2010. They are also emitting carbon monoxide: a gas released when wood is burned and does not have much access to oxygen. Also, the Amazon rainforest is the largest ecosystem in the world.
WHY THE AMAZON RAINFOREST WAS BURNED BY HUMANS They are clearing spaces to grow soybeans by logging. Next, they burned the cut trees. Then, the fires spread and got out of control.
WHAT WE CAN DO FOR AMAZON At first, we can donate to an organization that will help the rainforest. Second, share this problem on social media. The more we know about this, the more call for urgent action. The third thing is reducing the amount of paper and beef. That is helpful for reducing commercial pressure on the Amazon. There are a lot of things that you can do for Amazon rainforest. We usually feel that the Amazon rainforest is far from here and not caring about these problems so much. But you should try thinking about this once and doing something for this.

Alizia Guzman, Events Director Día de los Muertos also known as All Saint’s Day, often gets mistaken for Latin Halloween. But there is a major difference between the two. Halloween is about scare, gore, etc. Día de los Muertos is an explosion of color that celebrates how short life is and appreciate every moment that comes. This tradition is a Latin America custom that combines indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism. Brought to the region by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. (nationalgeograpy.org). It is generally celebrated the 31st of October through the second of
November. A big tradition in this celebration is Offrendas, which means offerings are set up to honor and remember the memory of their ancestors. Offrendas are also decorated with candy skulls, your ancestor’s favorite food, candles, anything that has something to do with life. Marigolds are also a big thing used in this tradition. The bright color and scent of the marigolds will guide the ancestor’s home. Marigolds also hold a different meaning. They also represent the fragility of life. Another tradition is to visit gravesites because in Mexico the gravesites are open to the public and churches. They go and pull weeds,
clean any debris, and decorate the graves of their loved ones. They also decorate their gravestones with candles, flowers. When family members gather around the grave and sing and tell stories about the loved ones who have passed. Día de los Muertos culture often lives on with newer generations. Since it’s often passed from the older generation to the new. When you pass, your memory lives on with your family that is still alive. Your light never leaves your family, everything you’ve done still will live on.

Classic Halloween Movies Juan Gonzalez-Herrera, Reporter
Halloween is right around the corner. Which means bring out your pumpkin spices, and binge watch classic Halloween movies. What makes a good movie? A good Halloween movie is nostalgic, funny, scary, and has great characters. I went around North and asked students and staff what was their favorite Halloween movie Most of them choose family halloween movies. Hocus Pocus is about a teenager named Max Dennison, he and his new friend and his little sister go explore an abandoned house and accidentally summon three dead witches back to life. Madea Boo is about a 17-year-old tries to get her father’s approval to go to a Halloween fraternity bash. Her father said she couldn’t go to Halloween bash, so she sneaks out when Madea is taking care of her. So its madea’s job to bring back Tiffany before her father finds
out. Halloween town is about a young girl named marnie who discovers that she is a witch and must help her grandmother defeat a villian named kalabar before he conquers Halloween town and Earth. Monster house is about a group of three kids that go fight this house that’s possessed with a monster and will eat anything that steps in its property and it’s up to DJ, Chowder, and Jenny to destroy the house so it won’t eat anymore people. The father of the Adams family gets news that his long-lost brother has been found but turns out that that is not his long-lost brother and just uses him to get all of his money.

Tips and Tricks for Your Car Johnathan Harris, Reporter Do you like cars if you do here some cool thing you might like to know Why I think everyone should have clear bra. Clear bra is getting invisible paint protection that lasts. This would be a good way to protect your cars paint from self-harm weather and rock chip scratches. For people who want to learn more about octane. An octane rating, or octane number, is a standard measure of the performance of an engine or aviation fuel. The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating (igniting). Therefore, high compressibility of the fuel matters mainly for gasoline engines. What is a tune and what does it do for your cars? To sum it up, tuning is basically changing the parameters the software uses to control the engine and/or transmission behavior. The goal usually is to increase performance to make the software understand how to correctly work with different parts or add features the car didn’t originally come with. Something major thing about car that most people really can’t understand how gas can be so important especially on car that need premium gas. Using regular gas in car designed for premium will damage the engine. Premium gas gives you more miles per gallon than regular gas... In fact, you’ll get a greater range of fuel economy between different brands of regular gas.

When buying a used car Look at gas mileage: Good mileage per year on a car is about 12,000. So, if you’re buying a car that is a 2011 and it is now 2019 then the mileage shouldn’t be too much over 96,000 miles. Another main thing when buying a used car is to always check and see if there is a check engine light. You’ll never know what the main problem could be.If you dont have one. It’s good to have a budget when buying a car from other’s and knowing what you want is also a good thing. You don’t have to be in a rush to get the deal done, stay simple minded and if it’s not to your liking then just walk away and know it’s not bad to walk away. It also doesn’t hurt to have someone look at the car to inspect what wrong and its give’s you and the seller a good analysis for a good price. Going on a test driver is very important to check and seeing if the car can go in reverse park and all that good stuff.

Studying or doing homework should not be something to dread. Finding fun ways to do it can make it more enjoyable. Try listening to music or making up a game that will keep you connected with your studies.
Keeping a planner or notebook can not only keep you organized but it can help you stay motivated as well. Try planning your day-to-day week and include homework, tests, sporting events, or any other outside things happening in your life. This strategy can help you keep up with all schoolwork, make sure you turn everything in, and reach deadlines. Add in studying time and time to take breaks to keep yourself balanced and fresh.
1
Getting to class on time is very important, you only have a five-minute passing time so use your time wisely. If you take it for granted your teacher will be able to tell. If you know you’re running late and only have a couple minutes left till class but, need to go to the restroom, let your teacher know beforehand. Class is very important because if you miss something from being late you might have missed an important thing you need to know which can cause you to fall behind and have trouble catching up. With being on time, you may even get there early enough to be able to ask questions if needed or talk to someone in the class with the free time you have. You may even try to get prepared for the class ahead of time, so you are ready right away.

The suggested amount of technology use for teenagers is two hours per day. The average teenager has a minimum of six hours per day and 57 per week. Less screen time improves movement and can also help with a sleep schedule. Ways to decrease screen time is to join clubs or sports. Going outside or taking a nap are great ways to get away from technology and do things that are healthy for you.

Cassandra Franco, Reporter We’re lucky to go to a school that welcomes and cares for the induvial that may not have been raised in this country or doesn’t speak the primary language of English. Here at North High School we have approximately 300 to 400 ELL students which stands for “English Language learners”. These students are children that are learning the English language or need extra help. Coming to a new country isn’t easy and neither is learning a new language. Many of them have to go through a dramatic change. Some might have been in the top of their class and coming to a new school where you don’t speak the language can change that. This is hard for anyone to face, but especially high school students. According to a study done by MIT they concluded that the best time to learn a new language is before the age of 10. They proved that people under 18 can still master a new language but it’s far more challenging for them.
Features
1. Use lots of visuals People who are learning a new language might not pick up on everything you’re saying therefore using a lot of visuals is important. ELL students might be going through culture shock, and they don’t know the language which can cause anxiety. School can already cause anxiety for anyone whether they are fluent in the
primary language or not. Some examples of visuals would be photos, hand signals, and nodding. All these things could go such a long way to making someone feel more welcome. 2. Don’t expect too much too fast. According to cultofpedagy.com most ELL students go through a “silent period” which is when they don’t talk much. Do not force them to talk if they don’t want to, they might not be comfortable yet. Just be aware of this when you’re talking to someone who isn’t fluent in your language. Being understanding is key when it comes to trying to make someone feel more at home. 3. Have an interest in their culture. ELL students are probably missing their life back home or going through culture shock, therefore having an interest in their culture is important. Ask them how their life was like back home or maybe something special about their culture. Every culture has their own unique holidays and traditions, asking these questions can be helpful to someone who is going through culture shock. Keep in my mind not to overstep as some of them can’t express themselves that much yet. Their English might be limited and might not be comfortable sharing everything.
4. Do not make fun of them. It’s heartbreaking when people make fun of someone for their accent when they’re first learning English. Especially when the people making fun of them only know one language. Making fun of them can lower their confidence and delay their silent period. Bringing them down because they don’t know the language can be traumatizing for them and no one should have to go through that. Step out of your comfort zone and try to make new friends. Many of them are friendly people and would also like to make new friends. Being helpful and friendly can go such a long way for someone who might feel alone or a little lost here at north. Doing this shows a good image for north and for you as a person. Keep these points in mind when you’re interacting with an ELL student and make a new friend.

Emily Dobberke, Editor-in-Chief Sara Perdue, Editor-in-Chief In the past year school had changed a lot. There is a different class schedule, time changes, and no more early outs. But, one of the more unknown changes is the new Associate Principal position. The Vice principal position now being dissolved, the AP took over. With the four people taking on this role, many questions are asked, “What do they do?”, “Who are they?”, and “How does this help me?” Steven Leib, former English teacher and instructional coach at Lincoln High School, joins North now for the first year of the AP position. When asked how he would describe this new position, he said it had more of an instructional standpoint while partnering with teachers so that, “together we can brainstorm different ideas and hopefully make a better experience for students.” He also said that the thing he loves most about North is the atmosphere that is generated by the students. The lasting impact he wants to make upon North is giving an answer to every question and getting to know the people that North has to offer. “I think a lot of the times when you go to a new building you just, you have to just really listen and you just have to really put your ears to the ground,” he had said about how he is going to get to know people. Although to most he is just an admin, he really cares about people and is passionate about helping them. He cares deeply about being empathetic towards people. So, next time you see him in the hallway, know that he is there to help and further strengthen your educational experience.
Previous Lincoln instructional coach, Cait Schrup, joins North for her first year as well. She describes the AP position as them, “supporting the academic side of the work that happens in a class,” while “providing professional development for teachers so that they can work toward improving their instructional practices.” She includes that the operational things, like fire drills, are still incorporated, it is just not the main focal point. She is excited for this position because she needs a new challenge and so far, every day she has asked a lot of questions and learns more with every answer. Her favorite thing about North is the people inside and with that she hopes to empower them to make them “realize that they can set high goals and that they can reach those goals.” She also wants to be the person that brings joy and happiness to a room through all the unbalanced times of school. She enjoys walking into North and seeing the students smiling in the hallways. So, next time you see her walking the halls, shine her a bright smile. After all, smiling is contagious.

17 A former SIL (Student Improvement Leader) at East High School, Steven Schappaugh is prepared to be back at North, after all four years of high school, with the AP position. To Schappaugh, the AP position was created to help teachers with their leadership skills along with instructional focus. “The operational stuff is still there, you still have to run a building. You still have to make sure the logistics are there, but if that is where I am spending the majority of my time then I am not doing my job well. This new position was about creating an infrastructure so that we are supporting teachers in a more meaningful way,” Schappaugh says about teachers at North. Even though this is his first year as an admin at North, he has always helped the school with the Polar Bear Gala and other sporting activities and generally loves North. “North was incredible to me as a student I could not imagine a better place for me to grow and develop as a person,” Schappaugh explains. When you see him around the school, try to match his school spirit.
After going back to school and getting her master’s degree in school leadership, Jessie Masteller returns to North after seven years and took the AP position. Even though she has been at North for seven years, she still hopes to set a positive reputation about the school. “You are out and about someday when you’re 25 and someone says, ‘Hey where did you go to high school?’, and you say North, there is positive connotations with that. You have a good academic experience, you had a good social experience, you feel well rounded and ready to go out and to do what’s next,” Masteller says about her vision of alumni. Another thing she hopes to change is the way students view classrooms and teachers. Just how an AP would advocate a teacher, Masteller wants students to know they should advocate for themselves. “So, instead of complaining like this class is boring, how could you communicate with your teacher in a respectful, growth mindset way, to make things better for the both of you?”.
“My mom owns an optical store, so I have like 15 pairs of glasses.” -Cait Schrup

Taking A Look At The Alyssa Bales, Events Director
From slides to students feeling they are being treated unequally, many students have been upset with the new dress code, and the changes made to it. Going over the new dress code, Mr. Benjamin Graeber, the principal at North High School, helped clear up questions about the dress code. First, what changed? Graeber says, “I think the only things that changed from last year to this year is that we tried to make things less gender specific. It felt like there was twice as many rules against those who identify as female as opposed as those who identify as male. So, we tried to balance that out. We did that for both the staff and student handbook to be honest with you.”
“At North we have a commonsense dress code policy meaning the three B’s: if we can see these [breats], bellies, or butts of men and women, we have a conversation.”
He says that the dress code is based on common sense and is relaxed more so than other schools, he just asks that students follow the three B rules. “At North we have a commonsense dress code policy meaning the three B’s if we can see these [breats], bellies, or butts of men and women, we have a conversation.” So, let's say you get dress coded, how would the conversation go? According to Graeber it should go something like this, “Hey, there's too much skin showing; would you like to change yourself or would you like to go to the polar bear closet and get a shirt?” Graeber says 85 percent of the time someone just chooses to cover up
Opinions
and it's not a problem but, 15 percent of the time it turns into a phone call home. Is there bias between students close to teacher's vs. ones who are not? Mr. Graeber says, “here's what I know: if I'm a classroom teacher and I have classes of 33, if I'm in charge of 188 students in six
“I got dress coded because my bra strap is seen as a ‘distraction’ and it made me feel ashamed of myself for having breasts. Which is something nobody can control.” periods there are probably days where I choose to focus on curriculum and not dress codes. It happens all the time, there will be a student who’s in 6th period and is wearing marijuana leaves on their sweatshirt and I will pull the student in and say ‘how did you get this far?’ And sometimes the answer is ‘I’ve been wearing this all day no one said anything,’ and other times it’s ‘well I had it in my bag other times’, it’s ‘well I had it in my bag put it on, or I’ve had it on and off the whole day,’ but I would be interested in uncovering when and if there is bias, but I also know there is times where we choose to focus on job A, teaching, over job B, dress code.” Many students were upset about the changes made to the dress code. One anonymous senior says, “It feels like it’s targeted towards women. I got dress coded because my bra strap is seen as a ‘distraction’ and it made me feel ashamed of myself for having breasts. Which is something nobody can control.” Another anonymous junior says, “I was showing my shoulders and then I got dress coded again when I wore a tank top even though it was the two- finger rule, which is where the strap of the top has to be the width of your two fingers but I was showing half of my back and then admin told me I was "risking it.” She goes on to say that sometimes staff are just doing their jobs.
19
he New Dress Code “Everything I wear will in some way be sexualized and I don't like that as adults they’re deciding whether I'm showing too much skin as a student.”
“I personally feel like it's their job to an extent; everything I wear will in some way be sexualized and I don't like that as adults their deciding whether I'm showing to much skin as a student. I understand if I were to wear something as small as a sports bra, but me wearing a full length top and getting dress coded cause of my back is too far.” Some students are more worried about the smaller changes made to the dress code. One anonymous junior says, “I feel like not being able to wear house slippers are kind of ridiculous because house slippers are all I have to wear at the moment until I’m able to get shoes. Again, I don’t have money for shoes.” Another junior said some of the violations are absurd, like wearing chains and sunglasses or not being able to wear slippers.” Talking to Graeber about why slides were banned, he cleared up the fact that a student won’t get dress coded for wearing slides nor would they get sent home. Some students are okay with the new dress code. One anonymous junior said “I think it is good for schools to use because it makes you look good/professional as a student and if everyone followed this then the whole school would look professional. sometimes people want to wear certain things especially when it’s hot out so, I do understand that kids want to wear certain things but, once school starts, I think they should use the dress code.” Another anonymous junior says, “It’s
good, understandable that some may want to show off their new clothes to their friends etc but it’s also a professional learning environment and if they’re putting their style of clothing before their education then it’s eh, there are plenty of clothes that looks good while passing all dress code requirement.”
So, the dress code has always been around and will probably continue to be around for years and years. What do you think about this one?

Delicia Oxenreider, Copy Editor No, Greenland is not green, it is full of ice. Iceland is green. In mid-August Trump announced that he would like to purchase Greenland. According to CNN, “Greenland is widely believed to be rich in natural resources including iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare earth elements, uranium, and oil”. So yeah, we can see why Trump might want to purchase Greenland. It is said that due to the melting ice it will make mining out these natural resources to be easier. But why is Trump trying to be reactive instead of proactive? As most know Trump does not believe in global warming so
Opinions
he does not take actions to prevent or reduce it. Global warming is causing the home of less then 60,000 people to melt and Trump worries about using the land to extract its resources. From a political stance CNN claims that, “The US already has a stake in Greenland, the Thule Air Base”. Some argue that if we already have a form of government there why not make the land ours. It is also said that if Trump was successful in purchasing Greenland that it would be a major deal for him and the U.S. It would be major and look good for Trump because the US has previously attempted to gain its land. According to Time, “It wouldn’t even be the first time the U.S. has tried to bag Greenland. Back in 1946, officials offered Denmark $100 million in gold bars for the world’s largest island, a Danish autonomous territory. U.S. officials at the time thought it was a “military necessity””. As one can see it would be a tremendous accomplishment for Trump since it has been attempted before. Now, are these reasons good enough to purchase Greenland? No, they are not good enough reasons to purchase Greenland, especially when it is not even up for sale in the first place. It makes no sense to start spending more money when Trump has yet to finish his estimated 25-billion-dollar project. And what about the natives? What would Trump do with the people who call Greenland home? Would he let them stay? Or claim that they too are illegal? Lets not forget that Trump is trying to be reactive rather then proactive about the global warming problem they are facing. Trump wants to turn a beautiful piece of land that is great for tourism into territory of the United States so that they can excavate the natural resources for his own profit. Why throw money at buying more land when there are much better things that Trump can put his money into, one thing that would real-
ly benefit from Tumps money is veteran care. On a daily basis we see so many veterans that are either homeless or aren’t well taken care of, yet Trump wants to throw money at new land. What sense does it make to put money into multiple projects when there are things that need fixed in America? What does this say about his priorities? Starting multiple projects does not make one a better president, but finishing them shows we have hope for actual change. It is clear that he will end his presidency with unfinished buisness. Is it fair to let him start something that someone else will have to clean up?Do you think buying Greenland is a good idea?
Fun facts about Greenland:
• It is the worlds biggest island with an area of 2.16 million square kilometers (836,330 square miles) • Almost 80% of the land mass is covered by an ice cap; an ice cap is a covering of ice over a large area, especially on the polar region of a plane. • The name Greenland means “land of people” • The official language is Greenlandic with Danish and English as second languages. This year north high students and staff were split between the new schedule. People at North were interviewed so we can hear their opinions on the topic. To me, the new schedule is problematic and insufficient. The amount of time in each class doesn’t give the students or the teachers enough time to do anything. Leaving most students, like myself with more homework than what is necessary. Test days are prolonged because of the amount of time in class and having every class in one day usually leaves most students having to take up to five tests in one day. And yes, there are 95-minute classes but what about all the other days? With jobs and after school activities, there is just not enough time. But many people think differently, or agree. Some students and teachers disagree and find the schedule to be better. Zitlali De Avila, a junior says, “I think the new schedules are better because I get all my classes in one day. I feel the classes for teachers are irritating. They barely have time to teach us students.” Dave Jordal, a history teacher, thinks that this year’s schedule is better. He says, “I like the new schedules because I see my students more frequently rather than having it be every other day.” After asking how he feels about lesson planning, he says, “It’s definitely an adjustment but the longer days are a bit harder because I have to fill up that 95 minutes.” Most teachers had the same issue
Opinions
on the lesson planning, saying things like, “it’s difficult finding things that will help keep the students engaged in class.” or saying, “Yes, it’s nice seeing them every day but its sometimes too much in such a small amount of time.” Quinn O’connor, a history teacher, said he wished he had more time with his students. He said, “Its well-intentioned but lesson planning gets kind of complicated, but I like seeing students every day.” After asking how he thought the students felt about the new schedule, he said, “I think that students are adapting to it. I know some students are frustrated because all the changes happening. But I think in a month from now we’ll all be fine.” A senior named Marysol Marquez says, “I personally don’t like the new schedule. It’s confusing.” the student also says, “I feel rushed most of the time but it’s kind of just something we all have to try to get used to.” Several students find it hard to finish work in class. Having very little time to do work in class leaves them with homework. Michael Fox, a junior says, “I’ve talked to other
people and I’ve heard that the new schedule stresses them out, but personally the schedule doesn’t give me a lot of time to understand what’s going on in class.” But it’s also agreed that in about a month or so, we’ll be completely used to it. Polar bear time is another on-going issue for most students and staff. It’s mostly just confusing and most think it’s pointless. The clubs and the confusion of the different drafts every week is just another thing that people have to worry about. In conclusion, every one’s opinion is different. Some staff and students agree with the new schedule and some don’t. It’s just something we’ll all have to get used to eventually. Hopefully we end up keeping the same schedule for more than just one year, no matter how bad it is. Are you adjusting to the new schedule well?

Gabriella Zanders, Reporter Cross country is not an easy sport and it’s not a sport for everyone. It’s a sport that takes a lot of effort and patience to gain speed and cut time. Not only is the physical side of it hard but being on a team requires a strong leader who is willing to encourage and support everyone, and that’s not the easiest thing to do. Ikilas Hasan, junior, has been a great leader to the cross country team at North Hasan started running when she was in eighth grade. Her gym teacher chose her because she always got a higher score then everyone when they did the pacer test. She says it wasn’t easy at first but showing up to practice and working hard made it become a lot easier. Hasan’s freshman year was a lot tougher because you go from running two miles to running a 5k. But sophomore year and on, it became an easy sport again. Her freshman year, she said that she would observe a teammate lead. “She’s quite a responsible person, very fun, exciting, caring and a loving person to be around.” Hasan says that’s when she learned what it meant to be a team leader. She says that being a leader feels great. “Me being around such beautiful, respectful and loving girls is very welcoming and it feels like home,” she says. Hasan says she believes she has always been a natural leader. “I don’t know who I got it from, but I love being a leader and its fun!” she said. Hasan’s inspiration

comes from her teammates, and her coach. “[My coach] believes in me and is always supporting me and pushing me to do my best and I want to do the same for my teammates and other people. I want to help them believe in themselves,” Hasan says. Being a leader can come with a lot of pressure, but Hasan says she feels no pressure when doing it. “I enjoy cross country!” Despite the hard practices and the tough meets, Hasan continues to do her best. “My family, my coach, my friends, I want to make them proud,” she says.

Irakiza Espoire, Reporter Where do you see yourself in five years? “Right here... I love what I’m doing, it’s a lot of hard work but I’m definitely up for the challenge,” North’s new football coach, Eric Addy said. He plans on sticking with the Polar Bears for as long as he can. North High School has always been a part of Eric’s life, from attending school here and returning after college, to coach as the assistant football, track, and basketball coach. He later took a job as the head coach at West Central Valley for four years. But he has always returned to his roots, to his home. Although one thing he wishes he could change about his job is the start and ending times of school. Preferring that school started earlier rather than later, guess that’s what happens when you’re a morning person. Growing up, just as many other athletes, Addy dreamed of going pro, but when that didn’t work out, becoming a mentor of the game he loved seemed to be the right way to go. This way, he could stay close to the sport that has always been a part of him for as long as he can remember. “I started out as a basketball guy, played football one day and fell in love with it like instantly,” he said. But in doing what he loves, it also comes in the way of him spending time with his family. Coach Addy, who has been married since 2015, now has a family of three, including his wife and their son. Outside of his job, Addy loves to spend time with his family or going to see a movie at the theater. Top movie being

“Remember the Titans;” it shows that football even influences his movie choices. “I’m very fortunate to have a very understanding wife,” Addy said as he refers to how much time that could be spent with his family but is spent on the field. With most of his day spent here at North working, he may get home around 7 or 8 p.m., which doesn’t leave a lot of time to spend with his family. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to be surrounded by positive male role models,” he said. Through his life, football has been a source of growth. Placing him around idols like his coaches, teammates and other older players who he learned from and helping him get better at the game while preparing him for anything life threw at him. “Something is going to go wrong on the football field, something is going to go wrong in your life and if you can’t handle it on the football field it’s gonna be quite difficult for you to handle it off the football field,” Coach Addy stated when on the topic of the influence the sport of football has had on him. From the day he picked up the football until now, his love for the game increased as Addy got older and learned more about the sport and as it became a bigger part of his life. One thing that coach regrets about his past, was that he companied to play quarter back more. Taking it minute by minute, day by day, Addy doesn’t know where life will take him, but he hopes that he is able to stay within the Polar Bear Nation.
