T
he fourth annual Dalkey Book Festival kicks off on Friday 14th June with local, national and international stars. We are very pleased to bring you, from around the world, Carl Bernstein, Robert Fisk, Uri Orlev, Nelofer Pazira, Atul Kochhar and Jonathan Dee. Coming from London and Scotland, we have Dawn O’Porter, Edna O’Brien, Pauline McLynn, Mike Scott, Bernard MacLaverty and Lana Citron. And we are delighted to host some of the very best Irish writers including Kevin Barry, Anne Enright, Frank McGuinness, Declan Kiberd, John Boyne and Eoin Colfer. Last year, Maeve Binchy wrote a short story for the festival and read it in Finnegan’s to a very lucky audience. That was to be her last public performance. This year, Dalkey will celebrate the international star who lived around the corner. This will be a very special event.
As well as literature, there is history, sport, politics, art, theatre, psychology and comedy. Dalkey Book Festival aims to mix these subjects in ways that are fresh and ultimately in a way that will inform as well as entertain. Come along, keep an open mind, listen to other forms of intelligence and challenge accepted ideas and conventional wisdom. We acknowledge the generous support of all our sponsors, the wonderful team of volunteers and the local venues, in particular Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre, as well as the library, Church of the Assumption, St Patrick’s Church, the Masonic Hall and the OPW for giving us some amazing new venues this year in the old Garda Station and Archbold’s Castle.

Edna O’Brien is probably Ireland’s most famous female novelist and we are delighted that Edna will be here this year. This is a unique chance to join her in Dalkey to look at a literary life of contemplation and passion. From the Catholic Church and rural Ireland to the glamorous cast – which includes Marlon Brando, Paul McCartney, Jackie Onassis, Princess Margaret, Jane Fonda, Robert Mitchum and Richard Burton – the writer who describes herself as an exile, will talk to Sean Rocks, the presenter of ARENA on RTÉ Radio 1.
What caused the Famine? Was it a natural tragedy or a ruthless example of wilful human neglect? Tim Pat Coogan – just back from a tour of the US – looks at one of the most divisive questions in Irish history. He talks to Dave Kenny about the catastrophe that continues to dominate the Irish psyche. Where better to talk history and politics than in the unusual and atmospheric setting of Dalkey’s decommissioned Garda station. If it gets a bit rowdy, the cells are still there!

Now she’s turned her talents to writing, and her first novel, Paper Aeroplanes, is an absolute showstopper. With graphic content and scenes of a sexual nature, the story of Renee & Flo is a gritty, poignant and laugh-out loud funny tale of being a teenager in a small town and the heartstopping power of female friendship. In conversation with Nadine O’Regan . (Recommended for adults and readers aged 14+)

The Thriving Family: David Coleman talks to Ian Robertson
I Saturday 15th June, 6.30pm-7.30pm H Town Hall
€10
Do you ever feel that it must be just you and your family and your children? Well it’s not, we are all in the same boat. David Coleman, Ireland’s most popular clinical psychologist, talks about your children, what is going on inside their heads and how you can get your head around it. David will talk to eminent psychologist Ian Robertson Professor of Psychology at Trinity College, on how to deal with all aspects of family life from babies and toddlers right though primary school and into the teenage years and not lose the plot! His straightforward, nojargon approach to common parenting dilemmas can help you achieve more harmony in your family life .
The close relationship between James Joyce and music has long been recognized by his readers, critics, and biographers. Joyce, like his father, was both an excellent singer and an accomplished pianist with an encyclopedic mastery of music of every type and genre, rivaling his vast knowledge of world literature. Tonight, we celebrate Jim in song with a Joycean musical extravaganza in the company of soprano, Sandra Schalks and Tom Cullivan on piano. Nora Barnacle recalls her life with “Jim” and sings sixteen of their favourite songs including ballads, concert gems and operatic arias.

As developers circle the skies above the inherited family home, plotting to raze it and build yet another golf course or block of apartments, Selina Guinness rises to the challenge of saving her home. Her memoir offers a fascinating glimpse of what had become of the Anglo-Irish by the late 20th century, and describes the hardships of modern farming. It is also a beautifully written meditation on what hard work really means. In conversation with Madeleine Keane.

Holocaust survivors are special people. What did they see? How did they deal with it? And deep inside them, do the horrors still haunt them? Uri Orlev was born in 1931 in Warsaw and spent the early years of World War II in the horrific Warsaw Ghetto. His father was captured by the Russians and didn’t see his sons again until 1954; his mother was murdered by the Nazis. After being smuggled out of the ghetto and hidden by Polish families, Orlev and his younger brother were sent to the notorious Bergen-Belsen. They were freed two years later and immigrated to pre-state Israel. Orlev has published over 30 books for children and youth, as well as fiction for adults. His books have been translated into 38 languages. In conversation with Lana Citron.
The Waterboys are best known for classic songs like The Whole of the Moon and ground-breaking albums including This is the Sea and Fisherman’s Blues. Their most recent work, An Appointment with Mr Yeats, sees Scott and his compatriots setting the lyrics of Ireland’s master poet to melody against a background of rousing rock’n’roll. Mike’s devastatingly honest and beautifully crafted memoir describes the adventures of a rock’n’roll seeker in quest of musical frontiers; it is serious, funny, profound, whimsical, revealing and enigmatic. Following his path through teenage punk bands, the success of The Waterboys and subsequent experiences in New York, Scotland’s Findhorn community and beyond, Adventures of a Waterboy doesn’t so much unravel the myths surrounding Scott and The Waterboys; it blows them to smithereens. Don’t miss this rare and candid encounter.

Many are described as legendary, few are truly in that league. Pulitzer prizewinner and America’s most famous journalist, he broke Watergate for the Washington Post: Carl Bernstein comes to Dalkey. Looking at America today, the Obama administration, America’s next president, Hilary Clinton, Vietnam 40 years on and of course his role in bringing down the Nixon administration, there’ll be plenty to talk about. Immortalized in the classic movie, All The Presidents Men, on the eve of a remake of that film starring Robert Redford , Carl Bernstein will be at the Dalkey Book Festival 2013 to discuss his life in journalism with David McWilliams. This is going to be a very special show; book early to make sure you don’t miss out!
It’s been a heavy day. You need laughter, entertainment and charm to round off the festival. The event is the Grand Finale Midsummer book Quiz and the Vico is the place. Test your knowledge of all things bookish with Barry Murphy, easily recognized as “one of the ten kings of Irish comedy” , writer and performer of Apres Match, Irish Pictorial Weekly and Soupy Norman. Who cares if you come last in the quiz, with Barry Murphy at the mic, it’ll be a hoot. Don’t miss it!

This new play about the legendary 18th Century Irish actor Charles Macklin is written and performed by Gary Jermyn and Michael James Ford. A colourful comic romp, it is set in February 1941. London is being ravaged by the Blitz. At the BBC, a radio play for two voices has been commissioned to celebrate the bicentenary of a famous event: on Valentine’s Day 1741, Culdaffborn Charles Macklin first appeared on the London stage as Shylock in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice – a role which he was to make his own for the next 50 years. Despite the air raid warnings, the show must go on.
