Dalkey Book Festival 19-22 June 2014

Welcome

Literature is the one place in any society where, within the secrecy of our own heads, we can hear voices talking about everything in every possible way. Salman Rushdie

W

elcome to the 5th year of the Dalkey Book Festival. We think this is the best yet and we hope you agree with us. Thanks for all your support over the years in helping us put the festival on the map. From the start, our aim has been to bring global names to our lovely local setting and this year, we’re delighted to bring you a varied programme of writers and thinkers from all over the world. We have a new venue in the wonderful Festival Marquee in the Secret Garden on Sorrento Road. We’ve also extended the weekend beyond writing and literature to being a festival of ideas. Dalkey is the place to be if you want to hear global names like Salman Rushdie discuss the freedom of speech with Olivia O’Leary or Israel’s finest novelist Amos Oz on the global novel or what about the ten next big global trends that will affect your life? We are honoured to have John Banville and Sebastian Barry for the first time at Dalkey and one of the hottest directors in European cinema at the moment, Lenny Abrahamson.

If politics is your thing, come listen to Robert Fisk. Or what about Miriam O’Callaghan talking to the BBC’s Kirsty Wark on her first novel, Newsnight, everyday sexism and the future of journalism? Or, smack in the middle of the World Cup, come to the hilarious Apres Match in the Festival Marquee. These are just some of the highlights of this year’s festival. And just one last thing: books, bookshops and the local community. During our first ever winter festival in December, we invited our festival bookseller, the award-winning independent Gutter Bookshop, to set up a pop up Christmas shop at 20 Railway Road. The good news is that they stayed and we are thrilled to have played a small part in bringing a dedicated bookshop back to Dalkey. They have something a little bit different from what you’ll find in the big chain bookshops. Visit them in the shop over the festival weekend! If you want a bookshop in the town, please do support them. Sian Smyth

House prices in Dún Laoghaire are rocketing again, yet the town is boarded up. The Council spends millions on a library, but businesses are closing down. Is Dún Laoghaire beyond hope? A place of broken windows, empty shops and fewer and fewer people shopping in what used to be a bustling, dynamic town. Can this decline be reversed? Who should do it? And how?

Chief of Staff of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, Bruce Katz is the author of “The Metropolitan Revolution: how cities are fixing our broken politics and fractured economy”. Facebook is only 10 years old. Twitter is younger. As you get older what global trends and inventions are going to change your life? Your life – its certainties and routine – has been turned on its head. What are the latest top ten trends that will affect you in the next few years? Think about it. Facebook is only ten years old; 665 million people use it every day. Twitter is less than ten years old and the fastest growing demographic using twitter are people over 50 years old. 6 billion hours of video are watched on YouTube every month. This year more babies will be born in Nigeria than in the entire European continent. What does this mean for your future? Globally, the top 8 Dalkey Book Festival 2014

1% has never been richer. China is now a bigger economy than the US and Russia looks set to invade Ukraine. As the population grows, the threat of resource wars loom. What can we predict? David McWilliams chairs this fascinating exploration with the brilliant Rory Sutherland (the ad man who gets inside people’s heads), the mercurial Mark Blythe (the historian and political thinker), polymath Aifric Campbell (trader turned novelist) and the city planner Bruce Katz (whose job it is to predict how and where we will live tomorrow).

In a wide-ranging interview with Miriam O’Callaghan, she will talk about her novel, as well as her career in broadcasting, what it’s been like working on Newsnight, and other live topics from everyday sexism to Scottish independence.

This month 100 years ago, the First World War erupted on a largely peaceful Europe. Millions of people, who actually had no real quarrel with each other, ended up dying in the killing fields of Flanders, the Dardanelles and the Eastern front. Empires collapsed and the world’s maps were re-drawn, but what actually happened to the ordinary people themselves? War writing tends to be very masculine, but what about a woman’s view? To answer this, we bring together Afghani writer, war correspondent and filmmaker Nelofer Pazira with two wonderful novelists Jennifer Johnston and Lia Mills both of whom have written haunting novels set in the First World War. With Anna Carey, author and journalist.

Who moulds public opinion and why are so many powerful people afraid of it? From Edward Snowden to our own whistleblowers, all over the world, dissent is suppressed and freedom of speech is still threatened in various subtle and blunt ways.

This is one not to be missed. Joining Fintan O’Toole, are Salman Rushdie – the Booker Prize winner who lived under a Fatwa for more than a decade – and Rory Sutherland, chairman of the world’s most influential advertising agency. They will discuss freedom of speech in a fascinating session, chaired by Olivia O’ Leary.

Will the Scots break up Britain? If so, what happens to Northern Ireland? A United Kingdom of Wales, Northern Ireland and England hardly makes sense. And what about the English voting to leave the EU in 2017? Where does that leave relations between Ireland, the UK and Europe? As we get closer to the forthcoming referendum on Scottish independence, our panel of experts considers the break up of Britain and what it means for you. Fellow Scots and Professors, Mark Blyth (International political economy at Brown) and Ian Robertson (Psychology at Trinity) tease out the issues. Chaired by Scottish blow-in, Bert Wright!

On 14 February 1989, Valentine’s Day, Salman Rushdie was telephoned by a BBC journalist and told that he

The celebrated Colombian, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, writing in Spanish, introduced us to the wonders of his Latin America. When he received the Nobel Prize for Literature, he remarked that the judges “have taken into account the literature of the sub-continent and have awarded me as a way of awarding all of this literature”. Two months after his death, we ask whether we are in danger of getting swamped by the juggernaut of English language writing. If so, are we missing the wonders of other cultures, other story telling, other experiences?

In Ireland, only 2% of books sold are translations. Sure, we have great writers, but so too do other countries and other languages. Are we missing out? Could Garcia Marquez make the same impact today? We are delighted to bring to Dalkey two titans of global literature to discuss the future of the global novel. Amos Oz is Israel’s finest writer. Writing in Hebrew, his work has been translated into 41 languages including Arabic. This week, he will receive an honorary doctorate from Trinity. Salman Rushdie is well, Salman Rushdie.

Elske Rahill’s debut novel, Between Dog And Wolf is described by The Independent as the most authentic depiction of Ireland’s post-boom, YouTube-raised young adults that we have had yet. Calling her “bravely original”, The Independent notes she has “singled herself out as an intriguing and definitive voice of a new generation of Irish writers”. Sue Leonard describes it as “an exceptional debut…the best to come out of Ireland in recent years”. Her forthcoming novel, Fruit, deals with motherhood, death, and the blood-ties that drive love and hatred through generations. Alongside Donal Ryan, Pat McCabe, John Boyne, Paul Murray and Belinda McKeon, she has responded to Joyce’s Dubliners with a new short story. ‘A Mother’ is part of a short story collection – Dubliners 100 – coming out this June to mark the Joyce Centenary.

John O’Donnell

On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, Kevin Myers will discuss how 250,000 Irish troops fought and about 40,000 died, yet they were airbrushed out of history. While it may now be fashionable to talk about this airbrushing, this is recent and one journalist above anyone else – Kevin Myers – has constantly reminded us of the great wrong done to these men. To his eternal credit, Kevin Myers ploughed this furrow when it was neither popular nor profitable. Come to hear him in the wonderfully atmospheric Masonic Lodge.

€10

John O’Donnell has been published in Ireland, England, America, Australia and New Zealand. His work has also been broadcast on RTÉ and BBC. Awards include the Hennessy Award for Poetry, the Ireland Funds Prize and the Seacat National Poetry Prize. He has published two previous collections Some Other Country (Bradshaw Books, 2002) and Icarus Sees His Father Fly (Dedalus Press, 2004); his latest collection On Water was published by Dedalus Press in May 2014. As a fiction writer his work has appeared in various publications, and in 2013 he was awarded the Hennessy Award for Fiction. A senior counsel, he lives and works in Dublin. “O’Donnell makes striking and memorable connections ... an Irish poet who takes you places, he also explores close to home the steady and steadying presence of love as well as the bigger pictures of injustice, turmoil, ‘the unfathomable’ and what he calls ‘a deep darker than ink’.” Niall MacMonagle Dalkey Book Festival 2014 17
