This highly innovative, multi-award winning film is a welcome addition to the Leaving Certificate English Comparative choice. When silent film actor Valentin finds himself becoming increasingly out-of-date with the arrival of sound, his co-star and one-time fan Peppy becomes a star in her own right. An homage to early Hollywood with a modern sensibility, the film explores themes of romance, fame and artistry through the medium of black and white silent cinema, showcasing some exceptionally crafted visual storytelling along the way. This fun and endearing film looks at teenage life through the eyes of witty, sophisticated protagonist Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) who, after sleeping with her goofy friend Bleeker, finds herself pregnant. Juno’s subsequent choices lead to a roller-coaster relationship with prospective adoptive parents, Mark and Vanessa. With strong female leads and fast-paced dialogue, Juno is a sweet but never saccharine film about relationships and growing up. The directors of our previous hit French title, The Intouchables, offer a fairly light take on migrant struggles in present-day France. Samba (Omar Sy) is from Senegal and has lived in France for ten years. When he is suddenly ordered to leave, he enlists the help of Alice (Charlotte Gainsbourg), an emotionally vulnerable immigration advocate with little experience but plenty of heart. An unexpected bond develops as they inspire each other tentatively to reinvent themselves in this vibrant comedy full of humour and heartfelt optimism. This gripping, tough drama is based on the true story of carpenter Georg Elser and his failed attempt to assassinate Hitler with a bomb that detonated 13 minutes too late. The film follows Elser’s arrest and brutal interrogation, while recalling the pastoral innocence of his youth and his later romance with a married woman, just as the Nazi Regime was beginning to take hold. From the director of Downfall, Elser offers a glimpse of the enigmatic figure that could have changed history. Germany • 2015 • Drama • 114min • English subtitles Director: Oliver Hirschbiegel

Feb 25, 10.00am Arguably the most important playwright in the English language, Shakespeare lives today through his continued influence on culture, language and education. Anytime you ‘wear your heart on your sleeve’, or you use any of the numerous, quotable Shakespearean phrases, you are quoting the writer of 37 plays and 154 sonnets. To mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, we will screen the classic Franco Zeffirelli adaptation of his most recognisable play, Romeo and Juliet (1968). Shot on location in Italy, the film is quieter than Baz Luhrmann’s yet none the less effective, and is renowned for the lavish sets, the youthfulness of its leads and the score by Fellini’s composer, Nino Rota.
