October—Month of the Missions. The theme of Missions has been a part of our church calendar throughout the world for years. In times past our thoughts would go out to those priests, religious and lay people on mission in foreign lands. These were people who gave their lives in response to the call to serve the gospel in a particular and unique way engaging in missionary work in far flung parts of the globe. I can recall friends that I grew up with setting off to take up their missionary work and only later realizing that my idea of what that meant was very different from the reality of what they did. One fellow I recall went to Asia and found himself in a community supporting young girls and women out of no fault of their own caught up in the world of prostitution. He founded organizations and built places where they could rebuild their lives. This was certainly not what I thought all those years ago of what missionaries do. Things have changed alright. Our church here at home has also changed. Indeed we are in mission here as well. Being a missionary is part and parcel of what it means to be baptized. How we live our faith and give witness to it today, here and now is missionary. This might mean to doing something practical, becoming involved in any of the church ministries—readers, collectors, choir, church cleaning - the list can go on. This is also our chance to renew our missionary commitment to living and sharing faith together. Slán. Fr. Melvyn
