Cabin is a strong symbol in the history of architecture. In Latvia, people starts to build cabins since 18th century. To rethink and translate cabin for dwelling is the aim of this project, we propose a new prototype of cabin through this competition.

This project is located at the Vetta River, Latvia. It is required to build a prototype of cabins for visitors and local users. The programme is a family house, a Sanna house for 4, deck of the port and the places for outdoor bonfire.

* Drawings are refined with the permission of other teammates. The masterplan and details of the Sanna are refined after the competition is submitted.

METHODOLOGY

The initial concept is to have a long volume facing to the river. We make several cuts according to proper scale of the cabin. Void space is also reserved in order to ensure privacy of each cabin.

DENSITY

To avoid blocking the sight of nearby cabins, we lower the density of solid cabin. New formation of cabins could ensure various activities happen in different scale of cabin combinations.

DISLOCATION

Dislocate the cabins so that each of them could enjoy enough sunlight from the south side.

SAUNA AS CENTRE

Set the volume which has three cabins combined as Sauna. People around could gather at this centre to socialize.

LANDUSE STRATEGY

SITE LOCATION

The site is at the bank of Venta river with a pleasant river scene. Therefore, our design will stress the relationship with the Venta river.

To promote the interaction between locals and tourists as well as improve land utilization, the land in the site will become farmland.

The pitched roof height accounts for 2/3 of the whole house, which is an important feature of Latvian traditional dwelling.

ORIENTATION

Our primary design principle is to achieve the optimal lighting and scenery.

Community Sauna

The community sauna is consists of three parts: shower area, cafe area and a sauna room with toilet. The idea of creating a public sauna is to serve the local farmers and visitors. In low season, the program could also provide a place to improve the living quality and social connection for the local.
