This project is located in Wushan, Hangzhou, a quite interesting area where mixing historical culture, nature and market style. However, there are some contradictions and separations between these elements, especially in the relationship between urban and nature as well as the human and wildlife.

My passion for architecture gradually developed during my undergraduate studies. At first, the word ‘architecture’ meant crazy forms and visually striking curves, and I preferred strong personal characteristics of the architects rather than an indepth discussion behind spaces. But architecture studies changed the way I sense the world. When I walked on the terrace of the city theatre in my hometown the other day, I realized the feelings that architects devote to express could also communicate through the architectural elements: stairs, facades, and even a single handrail at the corner - the purity of space weighed more than visual sense at that very moment.

I believe my academic background and work experience are sufficient to make me a strong candidate for the demand of this program. My undergraduate study at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China (UNNC) has laid a solid foundation for my further study. For example, Vertical Design studio helped me develop practical skills when designing projects on different scales, from residential buildings to urban reprogramming projects. In Tectonics, we are supposed to develop detailed drawings of our project, which illustrate details of our understanding of materiality and structure.

In the first year in Vertical Design Studio, we are required to do a housing project and public building in Ningbo under the theme of Metaverse and urban nature. At the beginning of Design Studio, we researched how the meta-verse influences our daily life. Finally, I focus on the problem of high-density residential buildings on our site: my vision intends to minimize people’s private space as a lifestyle. For most people living in communities, the reason people are dying to have larger private spaces is that they have no confidence in shared facilities. Architects should treat public spaces as homes for the locals. Designing a residential building with a deep focus on translating public spaces is also an exciting experience. The project helps me rethink my perspective on developing brand-new lifestyles for the future.

Furthermore, my final year Studio is under the scheme of Naturalizing cities: Agencies for Adaptive Reprogramming and Ecological Implementation through joint initiatives and collaborations with the China Academy of Art (CAA). Responding to urban context is vital throughout my study. The experience of having a site visit to Hangzhou and listening to CAA’s review is valuable for me. Besides, I have experience being shortlisted in the Caramel Shore Traveller Rooms International Architecture Competition in group work with two of my classmates at UNNC.

To explore more site research skills, I joined the Digital Humanities Lab (led by Pro. Jing Xie) at UNNC, designing websites, and geomatics for ancient buildings as an assistant. The use of Photogeometry with drones and camera scanners widens my horizon. The texture of the point cloud is realistic in RealityCapture. Besides, skills in using Adobe suite (PS, AI, ID), Rhino 7, and Twinmotion as real-time rendering engines have become my familiar tools through my interns in the CSET Building Renovation Project and internship in HIAD.

Campus activities are significant parts of my life. I am an organizer of the UNNC Winter Exhibition 2022. Furthermore, I have experience in holding events in UNNC Architecture Week and providing activity recording as well as video editing. Thirdly, as the Director of the Media Office, IT Department in the Science and Engineering Student Association (SESA), photography experience and graphic design of posters and brochures provide me with a different perspective and sensitivity to the world.

After graduation, I plan to work as an assistant architect in international firms for two years to accumulate practical experience. I pursue to be a professional architect dedicated to urban community projects. I believe myself to be a strong candidate for your program. I look forward to contributing to the broader academic community at your institution and getting the most substantial academic support in my chosen field. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application.
