HERB GARDEN GOOD THINGS FROM THE HERB GARDEN Herbology is one of the oldest forms of human medical knowledge. Herbs constitute nature‘s pharmacy: They strengthen the immune system, stimulate the body‘s self-healing properties and can prevent diseases. Wild horses instinctively know which plants will help them. However, our cultivated horse meadows usually contain very few types of plants, which means that using herbs as a feed supplement is useful in many cases. There are herbs to treat many conditions, including cough, eczema and digestive problems. Moreover, herbs provide numerous phytochemicals to which horses have become adapted over millions of years, but which are often lacking in modern feeds.

Although horses need only small amounts of vitamins, trace elements, and amino acids, these are nevertheless essential for their good health and condition. Pollution and improper pasture management have resulted in horses now getting fewer vitamins from pasture grass and hay. Feeding horses vitamins, trace elements, and amino acids is recommended to maintain optimum health. WHAT DO VITAMINS AND TRACE ELEMENTS DO FOR THE ORGANISM? The equine organism uses vitamins and trace elements in a myriad of ways. A deficiency can result in a variety of symptoms and diseases. It can lead to decreased performance or mental changes, just to name two. All horses need proper management and a balanced diet based on good quality hay and/or pasture grass. After these conditions are met, you can optimise your horse's health with additional feeds. STRONG BONES Horses need an adequate supply of trace elements from birth. Healthy bones need calcium to keep them strong and resilient. Whilst young horses can absorb and metabolise calcium well, absorption capacity decreases as they age. Horses with calcium deficiencies are often prone to fractures, ex-

ostoses, and tendon problems. Feeding calcium to foals, young horses, lactating mares and older horses can contribute to compensate for feed-related calcium deficiencies. The calcium-phosphorus balance can be regulated as well. STRONG HOOVES AND HEALTHY COAT Zinc and biotin are important for hoof development and quality. In many processes, zinc works in tandem with other substances, needing its „team partners“, biotin and methionine, to help build strong hooves. Biotin Plus contains all three of these components to promote robust, resilient hooves and hoof growth. A biotin deficiency can have negative effects on hoof horn growth and hoof horn quality. The feeding should take place over a longer period of time (at least 9 months), since biotin can only become noticeable with the growth of new horn cells. The hoof grows approximately 1 cm per month. A zinc deficiency is commonly seen in the horse’s largest organ – the skin. It can result in changes to the skin, including eczema, thickening, and / or hair loss. Here is one of those processes where zinc needs its „team partner“, methionine. Methionine is an amino acid that horses need and cannot produce themselves. They need to get it through their feed: it is one of the essential amino acids that should be provided in sufficient quantities. HEALTHY HEART, STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM The heart is one of the body’s most important organs. A horse needs vitamin E to maintain a healthy heart. Vitamin E protects the heart and all other cells from what is known as oxidative stress. Vitamin E could therefore be called „the muscle vitamin”. Sport and performance horses need a sufficient supply of vitamin E, as this vitamin is important for the horse's health and willingness to perform. Vitamin E can improve the oxygen supply to the muscles and thereby increases performance. Lethargy or a drop in performance can also indicate a selenium deficiency. The signs of a vitamin E and selenium deficiency are varied: young animals may experience developmental disorders and weak muscles that can decrease fertility in brood-

LYSINE, AN ESSENTIAL AMINO ACID Another essential amino acid is lysine. Lysine plays an important role in growth, performance, and muscle development. It is especially important for foals, young horses, and horses in hard work. STRONG MUSCLES AND LESS STRESS A horse's body is equipped with many muscles. For these to work as they should, a horse needs magnesium. Muscles require magnesium for movement - whether it's for high-performance sport or a leisurely hack. In summer, when horses sweat heavily, their magnesium requirements increase because magnesium is lost in sweat. Muscle cramps and tremors are common signs of a magnesium deficiency. But psychological changes such excitability or chronic nervousness also suggest a magnesium deficiency, often in combination with a deficiency of the amino acid L-tryptophan. Cartilage does not contain blood vessels and must receive nutrients through joint fluid. In arthritis, the joint cartilage is damaged, allowing the surfaces to rub against one another and causing pain. Exercise will often lessen pain somewhat. Damaged cartilage cannot regenerate. CORRECT FEEDING. Feed that is too energy-rich may place a strain on the large intestine and negatively affect metabolic processes. A possible consequence: a lack of vitamins and zinc in the skin, which favours the symptoms of summer eczema. In the same way, the skin is much stressed during the period when the horse changes its coat, this requires a lot of zinc and vitamin B, thus weakening the skin.

A horse weighing approximately 600 kg will produce up to 35 liters of sweat within five to seven hours on a hot day if it is working hard. This amounts to approximately 7 % of its body weight. Included in the horse‘s sweat, in addition to water, are considerable amounts of sodium chloride (salt), potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron and copper. Under extreme conditions, this may amount to several hundred grammes a day. In addition to the water lost, these electrolytes need to be replaced as quickly as possible. PREVENT STOMACH PROBLEMS The stomach of a horse has evolved for continuous food intake because horses eat constantly. The stomach therefore continuously produces stomach acid. This is in turn neutralized by the flow of saliva while feeding on roughage. Unfortunately, horses frequently have stomach problems ranging from gastritis to stomach ulcers. These may, for example, result from acidification of the stomach, which is caused when either too much stomach acid is produced or when it cannot be sufficiently neutralized. External circumstances such as stress, administration of medication or wrong feeding may cause this condition. Particularly sensitive horses should be supported with balanced feed in addition to sufficient provision of roughage.

Amino acids are building blocks for a healthy life. Many body tissues consist of protein, an example are muscles, but also internal organs, connective tissue and skin, hair and hoof horn. Protein is produced by the body from 20 different amino acids. 10 of these are essential, which means that the horse cannot produce them independently, but must continuously take them up in its feed. As it becomes warmer outside, both horses and humans increase their body odours and this attracts insects. Fly sprays do help, but they are also smelly and the smell tends to linger for a long time.
