Local News

Improvements made to bus service between Goole and Rawcliffe Bridge A bus service between Goole and Rawcliffe Bridge is to be extended by one day.

Bus service 88 runs between Goole, Airmyn, Rawcliffe and Rawcliffe Bridge, on Mondays to Fridays – and now a new Saturday service will be introduced this month. The extension has been announced by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which funds the entire service. The new Saturday bus service has been made possible because of contract changes. This now means the bus service will operate four journeys

planning, infrastructure and housing, said: “It’s great news that we’ve been able to extend this service by an extra day and run it on Saturdays. “I hope passengers will be pleased and that this service will be well used.”

a day in each direction, six days per week (Monday to Saturday) starting from Monday 11 April. The service is run by East Yorkshire buses. Councillor Claire Holmes, the council’s portfolio holder for

Anyone wanting more information about the service or a copy of the timetables can contact East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s transportation team via email at public.transport@eastriding. gov.uk The new timetable is also due to appear on East Yorkshire buses’ website and app.

Residents to have their say on new design guidance on future planning developments People across the East Riding are being invited to share their thoughts about where they live as part of a consultation which will go towards creating new design guidance for future planning developments. The aim of the guide, which is being produced by the council’s planning depart-ment, is to preserve the unique identity and character of the towns and villages across the East Riding to ensure any new developments and planning applica-tions reflect the style of the area. When produced, the guide will sit alongside local plan policies and will act as a point of reference for those submitting future applications as it will detail what

needs to be considered before planning permission is granted. Councillor Claire Holmes, portfolio holder for planning, housing and infrastructure at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said creating the guide is a way for residents to have their say on what they would like to see being given priority as new devel-opments come forward. She said: “The East Riding has a variety of landscapes and building styles with each town, village, coastal resort and settlements having their own unique identity and character. “The buildings and spaces between them which make up these areas each tell a story and we want to ensure this story continues which is why we’re looking at cre-ating a design

guide in a bid to keep the unique character of the East Riding. “We also want to consider who people want to live and work now as well as in the future which is why we’re asking out residents to let us know how they feel about where they live, what is special about it, what they think works and what doesn’t and what they would like to see in the future.” The consultation will run until Monday 18 April and anyone wishing to complete the survey can do so by visit-ing https:// www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/

New books for April

One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle This is the heart-breaking new novel from the author of the international bestseller In Five Years. When Katy’s mother dies, she’s left reeling. Carol wasn’t just Katy’s mum, but her best friend and first phone call. She had all the answers and now, when Katy needs her the most, she is gone. To make matters worse, the mother-daughter trip of a lifetime looms: two weeks in Positano, the town where Carol spent the summer before she met Katy’s father. Katy has been waiting years for Carol to take her, and now she is faced with embarking on the adventure alone. And then Carol appears, healthy and sun-tanned... and 30 years old. Katy doesn’t understand what is happening, or how – all she can focus on is that somehow, impossibly, she has her mother back. Over the course of one Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman who came before. But can we ever truly know our parents? Soon Katy must reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young woman who does not yet have a clue. The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E Smith An indie musician reeling from tragedy reconnects with her estranged father on a weeklong cruise in this tale of grief, fame and love from bestselling author Jennifer E. Smith. Just after the sudden death of her mother – her most devoted fan – and weeks before the launch of her highstakes second album, Greta James falls apart on stage. The footage quickly goes viral, and she stops playing. Greta’s career is suddenly in jeopardy – the kind of jeopardy her father, Conrad, has always warned her about. Months later, Greta – still heartbroken and very much adrift – reluctantly agrees to accompany Conrad on the Alaskan cruise her parents had booked to celebrate their 40th anniversary. It could be their last chance to heal old wounds in the wake of shared loss. But

Please mention

the trip will also prove to be a voyage of discovery for them both, and for Ben Wilder, a charming historian on-board, who is struggling with a major upheaval in his own life. In this unlikeliest of places – at sea and far from the packed venues she usually plays – Greta finally confronts the heartbreak she’s suffered. Yinka, Where is Your Huzband? by Lizzie Damilola Blackburn Lizzie Damilola Blackburn is a British-Nigerian writer, born in Peckham, and this is her debut novel. Yinka wants to find love. The problem is she also has a mum who thinks she’s better qualified to find it for her. She also has too many aunties who frequently pray for her delivery from singledom, a preference for chicken and chips over traditional Nigerian food, and a bum she’s sure is far too small as a result. The fact that she’s a 31-year-old south Londoner who doesn’t believe in sex before marriage is a bit of an obstacle too. So, when her cousin gets engaged, Yinka commences ‘Operation Find A Date for Rachel’s Wedding’. Armed with an incredibly specific plan, will Yinka find herself a husband? . French Braid by Anne Tyler Anne Tyler’s latest novel is a brilliantly perceptive, painfully true and funny journey deep into one family’s foibles, from the 1950s right up to the present today. When the kids are grown and Mercy Garrett gradually moves herself out of the family home, everyone is determined not to notice. Over at her studio, she wants space and silence. She won’t allow any family clutter. Not even their cat, Desmond. Yet it is a clutter of untidy moments that forms the Garretts’ family life over the decades, whether that’s a painstaking Easter lunch or giving a child a ride, a fateful train journey or an unexpected homecoming. And it all begins in 1959, with a family holiday to a cabin by a lake. It’s the only one the Garretts will ever take, but its effects will ripple through the generations.

Gardening

Gardening jobs for April As we approach the middle of Spring, there’s plenty to do in the garden. Not only are the days getting longer, the soil is also beginning to warm up, which means there’s plenty to be getting on with in the potting shed. April is a good time to sow your favourite vegetable seeds indoors, or directly outdoors if it’s warm enough, ready for a summer of bumper harvests. And if you want to fill your beds, borders, and containers with scent and colour, keep sowing your favourite flower seeds too. Vegetables in April

Flowering plants in April

l Remove any faded flowers from early-flowering bulbs, especially daffodils. l If you want them to naturalise, then leave the flowers to die back naturally on snowdrops, crocus, muscari, scillas and other small bulbs. l In mild areas, plant dahlia tubers outside towards the end of the month. l Stagger the planting of your gladioli corms to prolong the flowering period. l Deadhead spring-flowering plants like primroses and pansies. l Place plant support frames over growing clumps of tall perennials now to encourage the new stems to grow through and hide the supports from view.
