Welcome to the May edition of the magazine which is also our centenary edition - it only seems like yesterday that we were launching the magazines - where did that time go! I would like to say a big thank you to all of the DaltonSpire team, the contributers and the advertisers that all work so hard on the content, sales, production and distribution of the magazine.

We have an interesting and varied range of topics in this edition for your enjoyment ranging from Travel Ideas from Marion Owen, in the Hull City column we look at the season of change and what is in store for next season. We also have our usual round up of all the New Books to read this month. Roy Woodcock takes a look at the Toyota Aygo-X in his Motoring Column.

The East Riding Archives

Beverley’s Home Front Heroes The Women’s Royal Voluntary Service turns 84 this month. It was founded on 16th May 1938 and was then known as the Women’s Voluntary Service for Civil Defence, or ‘WVS’.

During the Second World War, they played a vital role on the Home Front, providing assistance in the evacuation of children from the cities; establishing mobile canteens to feed victims of air raids; collecting clothing for the needy; driving ambulances, and many other important jobs.

Beverley’s branch of the WVS began as a group of voluntary ‘Hospital Helps’ at the Base Hospital (Beverley Westwood) on 16th September 1940. Around 23 girls volunteered to assist with hospital work each evening during the Second World War. In the East Riding Archives at the Treasure House, you’ll find a record of these home front heroes in the form of a scrapbook (DDX294/1) that was compiled by Miss Madge Whiteing, a Hospital Helper.

As a reminder of her time as a volunteer, the scrapbook provides a fascinating collection of cuttings, photographs, notes, and colourful illustrations that depict the work, routine, and enjoyment of life as a WVS Hospital Help.

Let’s Get Moving at East Riding Leisure Beverley

Events coming to Beverley Saturday Market

East Riding Council’s health and wellbeing team are working in partnership with East Riding Leisure Beverley to launch a new multi activity session, ‘Lets’ Get Moving’, suited to those people who would like to take part in some fun and friendly activity.

East Riding Council’s local growth team are planning to deliver two days of activities in the centre of Beverley towards the end of May.

The sessions will start on Thursday, 12 May at East Riding Leisure Beverley, from 2pm-3pm, and will run for 10 weeks. Participants will be given the option of trying a range of different activities such as Boccia (a form of bowls), New Age Kurling, ping pong, seated volleyball, short tennis, badminton and much more.

Councillor Mike Medini, portfolio holder for cultural and leisure assets, said: “There is strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life.

People who are regularly active have a lower risk of developing many long term conditions such

as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers.”

The sessions at East Riding Leisure Beverley will be free of charge on the launch date and £2.80 thereafter. There is no need to book - just wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring a drink.

The sessions are aimed at all ability levels, and are designed to offer a range of activities in a fun environment.

The events will be free to attend, and attendees will not be required to prebook. The two days of activities will be aimed at families and include a range of family entertainment provided by external vendors, internal council teams and local community groups.

The two days of events will include a variety of activities including craft and circus workshops, as well as free face painting, music and outdoor seating.

The events will be held on Monday 30 May and Tuesday 31 May at the pedestrianised area of Beverley Saturday Market from 10am until 4pm on both days.

The local growth team at the council are leading on the planning and delivery of the events with the support of internal teams and external community groups. There will be activities and entertainment delivered by St Mary’s Church, Beverley Minster, Beverley Library & Treasure House and Beverley FM. Fantastic Faces and Aba Daba Circus will also be attending.

The local growth team are part of an internal working group who are meeting regularly to identify potential uses for the pedestrianised area in Saturday Market. The current pedestrianised area is a pilot using DfT Emergency Active Travel funding to trial the scheme. The intention of this project is to trial the area as a community event space to support the development of the final plan.

Cllr Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economic development and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “These are further events delivered by the councils local growth team to encourage more visitors into the area and support local businesses. Plans are to make use of the fantastic area at Saturday Market in Beverley by putting on several days of entertainment during the Summer half-term.

“Events like this rely on good attendances so I would encourage visitors and residents to get involved during the early part of week – it would be wonderful to see lots of smiles on faces!”

When’s the best time to buy a property?

If you’re thinking about buying a house, it’s worth bearing in mind that certain times of the year are better for this than others.

A market brimming with houses for sale is the best time for purchasing, whereas if there’s little available, you could end up paying over the asking price in a bid to beat other buyers.

Buying property is a huge investment and not a decision to take lightly. With the stamp duty holiday now over, and life getting back to some sort of normality, it’ll be interesting to see what happens to the property market going forward.

What time of year is best?

Traditionally, spring and early autumn are popular times to buy.

‘There is typically more housing stock available in spring and sales often go through quicker as people are keen to complete before the summer,’ says Heather Mapplebeck, a financial planning expert and estate agent. ‘In contrast, the number of homes available later in the year tend to drop as homeowners opt to stay put for the winter,’ she says.

For selling a house?

Interestingly, although spring and early autumn are the best time to buy, winter and summer tend to be the best times to sell a house.

‘With fewer properties available in summer and winter, your house will have less competition and stand out more,’ explains Heather.

‘March often sees an increase in the number of homes up for sale.

So, if you are looking to buy a house then it is likely you will have far more to choose from as there are lots of people looking to move home in the spring,’ says Heather.

When’s the best time to buy for first-time buyers?

‘The latest base interest rate hike from the Bank of England will ultimately lead to higher mortgage costs over the next year.’

‘As property is seen to be inflationproof, that will likely drive prices even higher, which will have a double whammy impact on people hoping to buy,’ she says.

If you’re in a position to do so, Heather advises jumping on the property ladder sooner rather than later, in order to benefit from current low interest rates.

‘To unblock these advantageous rates, buyers will need around a 20% deposit.’ If you don’t have

There is a general consensus that 2022 will be the year when buyers will get a fair price. Sales being agreed have increased, but the number of sales achieving over the asking price has reduced.

1 ASSESS YOUR POSITION ‘Being a cash buyer and/or with no chain will increase your appeal as a buyer, as the sale can move quickly, sometimes in just 30 days.’

‘Demand remains strong and there is currently a shortage of properties to meet demand. So prices are holding steady and I believe they will continue to do so in 2022,’ says Heather. Meaning 2022 is looking a promising time to make a smart home changeover.

2 CHECK OUT NEW HOMES Look at new developments where the homes are all finished, but not yet all sold. ‘Once houses are built, developers want to capitalise on their investment to fund their next project. If a few houses remain unsold they may be prepared to take an offer,’ she says.

3 MAKE AN OFFER ‘If someone needs to sell quickly for financial reasons – relocation or perhaps a separation – they may be more inclined to take an offer, says Heather.

Money expert Rob Moran shares his advice on how your cash can contribute to a better planet...

Climate change, pollution and the environment are among our biggest life concerns and it’s the strongest we’ve felt since 1989, according to research.

While our concerns have led us to consuming less meat, seeking out eco-friendly alternatives and buying electric cars, the real power to make an impact lies with your money.

Our finance expert Rob Moran explains how what you do with your cash can help save the planet.

Bank for good

When you put your money into a bank, it is used to invest in various companies and projects, but they might not necessarily be ones you would be happy about. Avoid ‘greenwashing’ from banks. Where they use green buzzwords to

attract new customers, without changing their practices.

Rather than planting a tree, running a charity initiative, or offering some carbon credits for every account opened, by far the most important factor is the investment and lending focus of the bank.

A report from Greenpeace and WWF UK found that banks and asset managers were responsible for financing the output of 805 million tonnes of CO2 in 2019. If this upsets you, then make a stand and switch to a green bank. There are several websites out there that rank the most ethical bank accounts.The leading and most thorough analysis is done by Ethical Consumer, but other comparison sites will start to include these factors soon.

l Victorian tables, chairs, benches, bird baths and sun dials are very expensive and do not come on the market very often. There are some excellent reproductions available.

Do you call it ‘Garden Antiques’? Or is it architectural salvage, industrial ware, or upcycling?

Whatever you decide, garden antiques are a big area to look at.

The obvious ones include statues, gate posts and fountains. If items are made from stone, they will be expensive and fetch a premium at auction. However, reconstituted stone, concrete or earthenware are more affordable.

Gnomes and chimney pots are quite common items to find in gardens, and they do make a good feature. A pair of chimney pots, preferably different heights, look good but an individual pot placed with plants growing from them and around them also make a statement. The use of reclaimed stone and blocks, and the use of coping stones makes for good edging.

l Railway sleepers and barrels are standard in many gardens, and with natural aging will blend in well.

I really dislike gardening! However, like many people, I did make an effort to sort out the garden during the beginning of lockdown in April 2020. I decided that I wanted my garden to have that country cottage feel to it. I dug, weeded, and then planted all sorts of plants of various shapes, sizes and colours. To add interest, I have added various finds. I have two chimney pots, both planted up with overflowing plants. I have a broken pot that looks as though it is partially buried with greenery cascading from it. A couple of old stone slabs add interest as well as beginning useful as steppingstones. Once car boots started again, I managed to purchase an old metal dustbin and lid that now acts as a store for bird food. I have also acquired a vintage watering can that I use as a mini water butt.

I did have a metal garden table and chairs that I left out to rust and wear. They now add that rustic feel as well as being somewhere to sit.

The man who once told us he loved us from the bottom of his pencil case, founder Beautiful South member Dave Hemingway returns with his new band SUNBIRDS playing Doncaster, Hull and York this June.

‘Cool To Be Kind’ was released in November 2020, on the independent label Nectar Records signalling the arrival of Sunbirds with new songs and a new sound.

Although born and bred in England, the band’s sound predominantly features the instrumentation of

traditional American roots music combined with the occasional outburst of guitar heavy melody more associated with Seattle in the late 80’s/early 90’s.

However, you can only sing about what you know.

“Although a lot of the songs have an Americana feel” says Dave “they’re still about life in England. You’re going to feel a bit daft singing about pick-up trucks and low down honky-tonks when you live in Yorkshire.”

Erkans’ Thai Chicken Grill Erkan Sahindal - business owner at the Olive Tree on Lincoln Way, Beverley - and accomplished chef shares this Thai technique of grilling chicken really gently. “Gai yang is grilled chicken and nam jim jaew is a wildly popular dipping sauce – sweet, sour and a little spicy (adjust to your taste). The easy-tomake roasted rice powder is essential to the sauce, adding a toasty flavour and crunchy texture.”

Serves 4 Hands-on time 15 minutes, plus overnight marinating and resting Grill time 1½ hours Specialist kit Spice grinder or

Ingredients • 2–2.5kg whole free-range chicken • Steamed rice and lime wedges to serve For the marinade • 3 tbsp chopped coriander, roots and stalks • 1 garlic bulb, cloves peeled • 2 tbsp light brown sugar • 30g fresh turmeric, grated • 2 tsp white peppercorns • 3 tbsp fish sauce • 1 tsp dark soy sauce For the nam jim jaew • 1 tbsp glutinous (sticky) rice • 2 small Thai shallots (or 1 regular shallot), thinly sliced • 1 spring onion, green part only, thinly sliced • 2 tbsp fish sauce • 1-2 tbsp light brown sugar • 3-4 tbsp lime juice • 1 tbsp chilli flakes (or to taste)

Method

1 To make the marinade, pound the coriander roots and stalks, garlic, sugar, turmeric and peppercorns to a paste in a pestle and mortar, then mix in the fish sauce and soy sauce.

2 Spatchcock the chicken by cutting either side of the backbone with kitchen scissors.

Remove the bone, turn the bird over, then open it out and press down firmly with the heel of your hand to flatten). Rub the marinade all over the chicken, then cover and marinate in the fridge overnight.

3 Toast the glutinous rice in a pan or wok over a medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring continuously to stop it burning.

It should have an even golden colour. Let the rice cool, then grind to a coarse powder in a spice grinder/pestle and mortar.

You want to retain some of the crunchy texture, so take care not to grind it too finely.

4 When you’re ready to cook, prepare the barbecue for indirect cooking with the coals banked to one side. When the coals are ready, almost close the vents, leaving just a small

gap at the top and the bottom.

Wipe any large clumps of marinade off the chicken and cook the bird away from the coals, breast side up, with the legs facing towards the hotter side, for 1½ hours. You may need to move the chicken during cooking so it barbecues evenly.

5 To make the nam jim jaew, combine all the ingredients with the toasted rice powder in a bowl.

Let the chicken rest somewhere warm for 15 minutes before serving it with the dipping sauce, steamed rice and lime wedges.

No BBQ: Heat the oven to 180°C fan/gas 6. Put the marinated chicken in a large roasting dish or lipped baking tray and cook, skin-side up, for 50 minutes or until the juices run clear, or a probe thermometer pushed into the thickest part of the thigh reads 70-72°C. Complete the recipe.

Ingredient Tip: I always use fresh turmeric but you can swap 2 tsp dried turmeric for 30g fresh.

Top Tip: Store leftover nam jim jaew in a jar in the fridge for several days. Use as a dressing for salads or meat.

World of Wines Summer promises warm days and the hope of long dinners spent outside with friends. It also marks the change from drinking the big, full-bodied reds of winter to seeking out refreshing, zesty and light styles of red wine.

Lighter-bodied reds are the perfect summer wine: They can be equally as complex and interesting as their fuller-bodied counterparts; they pair wonderfully with barbecues, fish dishes, vegetables and fresher, summer recipes; and there is a huge range of styles to suit most palates (and pockets).

The body of a wine refers to its “mouth feel”, with light-bodied wines being less viscous that fullbodied wines - viscosity describes the thickness or texture of a liquid, with water being less viscous than syrup, for example.

Tannins is the other term that comes up a lot. Tannins are naturally-occurring compounds called polyphenols. These are found in grape skins and give wines a noticeable dryness.

Light red wines generally have a lower alcohol content of less than 12.5 per cent. They also have less tannins than medium or fullbodied wines. Pinot Noir, Grenache, and Barbera are a few examples; not forgetting juicy, well-priced Beaujolais.

The most famous region for Pinot Noir, Burgundy, produces stunning, lighter-bodied red wines. Pinot Noir grapes are notoriously difficult to handle: they’re susceptible to frost and disease, and need a long, warm summer to avoid unripe, green flavours in the wine. Some of the best examples are picked by hand, pressed in whole bunches, and can be left to age in bottle for decades.

The key region for red Burgundy is the Côte de Nuits, which includes some of the most celebrated Grands Crus appellations such as Chambertin, Clos de Tart, Clos de Vougeot, Grands Échezeaux and brilliant Premier Crus.

Beaujolais is made from the Gamay grape, which makes wellstructured, perfumed wines, full of ripe black fruit. These wines are often drunk young (once upon a time we always made a fuss about the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau, but then found it to be underwhelming) but the thing to remember is that Beaujolais can also age for five to 10 years and that certainly makes for a better drinking experience.

One wine expert, Karen MacNeil, has described Beaujolais as “the only white wine that happens to be red” Similarly, Beaujolais is often treated like a white wine and served slightly chilled to a lower temperature, the lighter the style] In Beaujolais itself, it’s traditional to soak the bottles in buckets of ice water and bring them out to the centre of villages for picnics and games of boules.

Sometimes young people get generic advice – ‘do some revision’.

Don’t make them feel worse A lot of motivation around exams is fear-based – warnings that if you don’t do well, you won’t be able to go to university. Aygo gets the X factor!

Toyota has added the X factor to their small city car and the end result makes the Aygo X both a fun and practical car. Roy Woodcock reports . . .

Just when you thought the trend, particularly for smaller, what we call city cars, was all-electric, along comes something new that bucks the trend.

The Toyota Aygo X (pronounced Aygo Cross) is a compact five-door, four seater and a replacement for the even smaller Aygo, first introduced in 2005. It’s certainly eye-catching, particularly in the range of spicy colours you can choose - Cardamom Green, Chilli Red, Ginger Beige and Juniper Blue.

But what’s perhaps more eyecatching, particularly when you’re weighing up the choices available to you right now, is the price - certainly against those electricpowered cars.

Prices start from £14,805 on the road, which is way below the cost of a battery-powered Vauxhall Corsa or Fiat 500.

Its chunky, crossover looks, also buy into current trends without having to buy into the Idea of this being some sort of off-roading capable SUV like the Fiat Panda Cross; capabilities which, let’s face it, you’re never really going to put to the test, even though you’ve paid more to get them.

What you do get, though, is an increased ride height - the car’s ground clearance has been increased by 11mm, giving the driver more presence and assurance on the road, and the seating position has been raised by 55mm, giving the driver a better view of other road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians.

There are generously-equipped trim levels to choose from called Pure, Edge, Exclusive and Limited Edition and all models are powered

by Toyota’s highly-acclaimed and award-winning one-litre, threecylinder petrol engine delivering 71bhp and 93Nm of torque. The Aygo X can be matched to a fivespeed manual transmission or CVT automatic gearbox.

It has a top speed of 98mph (94mph on the CVT model), can complete the 0 - 62mph dash in 14.9 seconds and when it comes to running costs, the vehicle can deliver a combined 56.5-58.8mpg with carbon emissions of 109-110g/km on manual models and 56.5mpg with CO2 emissions of 113-114g/km on CVT versions.

There’s no denying the Aygo X is a looker and options include a bi-tone black paint job and customers can also specify a pagoda-style opentop canvas roof costing £895.

It features flared wheel arches, a shorter front overhang compared to the old Aygo, plus larger 17 or 18-inch wheels. Entry-level cars have halogen projector headlights while the top models gain LED lights

and daytime running lights. There are black wheel arch mouldings, pop-out rear windows and rear privacy glass.

Moving inside, the cabin is fresh, bright and cheery with a choice of fabric, synthetic leather or part leather upholstery. There is a three-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear level, plus climate control with pollen filters.

An ‘X’ symbol is discreetly stitched into the seat upholstery on higher trim levels, along with the ‘Aygo X’ model name subtly featured in the LED headlamps.

On-board creature comforts are generous with Toyota’s latest multimedia system offering cloud-based navigation – that means the car is always connected on the move with fully automatic over-the-air software updates.

Wireless smartphone connectivity is offered via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with a charging tray on Exclusive and Limited Edition models. Also, dependant on the trim, there is a four-speaker audio with DAB or five-speaker JBL premium sound system.

The touchscreen ranges from seven, eight or nine-inches in size, but all versions have Bluetooth and USB connection, along with audio

controls on the steering wheel.

Range-topping models gain Toyota Smart Connect. This not only adds the larger touchscreen, but introduces the MyT smartphone app that allows you to track fuel levels, trip data, driving analytics and it even works as a vehicle tracker.

Some rivals may beat the Aygo X for sheer pace, but this car is very capable on motorways and nicely balanced through winding country lanes.The three-pot engine does get a little more vocal under heavy acceleration but generally the Aygo X is nicely refined. The suspension has been specifically tweaked for this car and it does a worthy job of settling the vehicle on uneven surfaces.

Bigger all round than the car it replaces, there is more shoulder space up front and the two designated rear seats are ideal for children or grown-ups if the seats are not pushed back too far. The boot is larger and can swallow 60 litres more kit compared to the outgoing Aygo. It has a capacity of 231 litres, increasing to 829 litres with the 50:50 split-folding rear seats dropped down. If the model is fitted with the JBL sound system, it reduces the boot limit by up to 50 litres.

Dutch bulbfields & the MARIONOWEN 10 yearly Floriade…

TRAVEL The latter is in full swing but the bulb fields

you need to consider for 2023. What a wonderful sight of colour, Keukenhof nestled in the Dutch bulb fields, never fails to impress. As you wander around there are plenty of seats to ponder and just drink in the sight & scents of the flora and fauna in front of your eyes. Indoor and outdoor exhibits abound so should the weather be inclement you will still not be disappointed.

Sailing from Newcastle on DFDS, although we had to travel north the journey was worth it. The quality of the ferry is superb. Throughout the tour the weather was baking hot, I had to dash out and buy sun tan lotion! Carl who was driving kept saying all week it is just like being abroad which constantly made everyone all chuckle.

I was amazed at the cross varieties of tulips which have been cultivated over the years. Some looked similar to peonies, others ugly and some very pretty. As the weather was hot we took an optional boat ride around the bulb fields for an extra few Euros. Travelling along the canals, we went under bridges, saw locals on the water out for the day in their own crafts plus a number of birds species which I had never seen before.

Every year I come away looking forward to the next. (late March to early May yearly). We generally offer a tour via coach & ferry but, often book clients to fly from Humberside enjoying a few days in the pretty nearby town of Leiden offering easy access to Keukenhof and the option to enjoy more than just a one day visit.

Floriade is only 10 yearly, a horticultural event always quirky and futuristic! This years theme is sustainable urban living. Three islands which are re claimed land have been used and when the event finishes in September the site will be developed for urban living. There is a Lego model to view of how it will look in the future. The event is totally different to 10 years ago. There is even has a cable car allowing you to have an aerial view of the grounds. I did feel the exhibition still had a long way to go before the plans are fulfilled and looking forward to a second visit this September.

In complete contrast to these new idea’s we also enjoyed an old steam train and a wonderful living museum in the In the town of Enkhuizen, North Holland (similar to our Beamish). I just had to share these clogs with you that I spotted in one of the Merchants houses. Fishing and the sea play a big part of this outdoor museum with old ships and fisherman still doing the nets. They have cows grazing on the pasture, a full village and a windmill.

Everyone returned back to the UK saying it was so good to have been out of the country and had very much enjoyed the change of scenery. This was our first continental coach tour since 2019 and it felt good to be back.

Anyone with travel bookings please have a little patience, rebuilding travel is not easy, airlines in particular are chopping and changing schedules and the pressure is really on to keep on top of bookings.

The industry will get there. Everyone take a moment and check your passports, they are only valid for 10 years from the date of issue. Now you need a minimum of 3 or 6 months to validity travel.

Let’s get back to travelling this year, a change is definitely as good as a rest and I would recommend a break as a great tonic. There are so many options available to travel around our wonderful world including the UK. We look forward to the opportunity of sending you away and creating wonderful memories for you to treasure.

The end of the first chapter

Hull City have achieved the first priority for the season by avoiding relegation a fortnight ago but so much more has happened during the campaign to provide much needed optimism. The biggest positive is of course the new ownership. The Allams have finally moved on and we have a new owner who is rapidly becoming a man of the people, promising funds to develop the team, wants the fans to feel welcomed and has ambitions of returning to the Premier League.

Over the past four of five years all we have seen is a managed decline as the Allams reduced their debt and the club budget by the season until the disasters of the 2019-20 season. Relegation and the Covid financial hit meant that the majority of the high earners from the relegated team left and promotion was achieved through youth players and newcomers with more passion or a desire to build careers. These players were on low wages and these players have been the bulk of this seasons’ team. The team surviving and pulling off the occasional upsets have by and large been locally developed or inexperienced at this level. Many have developed throughout the season and players such as Brandon Fleming and Sean McLoughlin for instance look capable at this level. There is a basis of at least a mid-table side if a few extra players can be brought in during the close season.

A number of players face an uncertain future. Eight players are out of contract though you would expect George Honeyman to be offered a new deal and one or two others to have their contact deals extended. Mallik Wilks may even be retained though that may be to secure a transfer fee by August if he doesn’t return fitter and more motivated after the summer break.

There has also been talk of new deals for Jacob Greaves and even Keane Lewis-Potter which would really impress fans as both have been linked with multi-millionpound deals to the likes of Spurs, Brentford and West Ham. I’m not sure if either are quite ready yet and another season here would

help their long-term development rather than stagnating in large Premier League squads. Who knows, Jarrod Bowen has done well at West Ham, maybe big offers may come in and the club takes this for rebuilding purposes.

Twenty million for KLP could help fund the basis of a new squad if the club are looking at the foreign markets rather than over-priced English leagues. The only problem is whether players from Turkey or Eastern Europe for instance are of the required standard. They may struggle or take several weeks to acclimatise. Hopefully our scouting team know this market and who is up to the demands of English football however.

Besides the on-field developments the reaction of the Tiger Nation is equally important. Gates have risen by 3-4,000 so far and there is a fair

way to go to reach 20,000 regularly once again but that won’t happen overnight as the Allams lost 10,000 or more fans over the previous eight years and people lost their black and amber connection. Much will depend on the close season and if there is ambition and the membership and match day pieces can attract fans to return. Being able to pay on the day or opening up the West Stand Upper will

help as well. Making people feel important once again is key and there is no doubt that the club are listening as well as learning from all of the many issues since Hull City Tigers or the membership scheme first came up and caused massive frictions from the club’s taken for granted customers. There is a far more positive attitude within the fan base however, we actually enjoy the experience, fans aren’t arguing over club decisions and the players receive vocal support once again. The ground is not now filled with apathy but with passion and fans proud once again to feel part of their club once again.

We shall have to see what the close season brings, one or two established British players wouldn’t go amiss as it could be a step into the unknown with players with Turkish connections but we just have to put our trust into Acun and continue the rebuilding of Hull City. It may take two to three seasons to achieve their aims but as long as the stadium continues to be a happy place and progress is made then we’ll continue to follow our owners dream. In May, with only a 10% risk of frost - many vegetable, herb and flower seeds can be directly sown outdoors, while earlier sowings can now be planted out after a period of acclimatisation (hardening off) to outside conditions.

Vegetables to plant in May Beetroot If you’re new to growing vegetables, beetroot is a good, easy-to-grow option. The seeds don’t need much encouragement to germinate and they require little maintenance once established. Beetroot ‘Boltardy’ is one of the most popular cultivars to grow, but you could also try a more unusually coloured

cultivar, such as ‘Touchstone Gold’.

Sow seeds direct in shallow drills or pots. Now’s also the time to plant out pre-sown beetroot plugs outside – make sure you plant them before the roots develop or they will grow into unusual shapes.

Sweetcorn May is the last time to sow sweetcorn, to give the plants plenty of time to grow and ripen. For best results, sow

in a multi-celled tray indoors and plant out when the seedlings are large enough to handle. Any sweetcorn plants sown in April can be planted out now, after a period of hardening off.

Cucumber Cucumbers do best in a greenhouse but some newer varieties have been bred to tolerate outside conditions.

Sow into multi-celled seed trays or individual pots and pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle.

Sprouting broccoli An extremely robust crop, sprouting broccoli produces nutrient-packed, succulent spears, which are perfect for steaming, boiling and grilling. It’s easy to grow, and if you grow different varieties, you can harvest broccoli spears throughout winter and into spring. Sow into seed trays or small pots and pot on until they’re ready to plant out.

Gardening Zinnias Native to Mexico, zinnias can be sown outdoors in May. Simply scatter seed over moist, wellprepared soil and cover with a thin layer of compost. Zinnias also work well in pots.

After planting, mulch around the base with home-made compost to conserve moisture in the soil.

MY FAVOURITE MONTH Do you have a favourite month? Mine is most definitely May – so yay! It’s May! For starters, it’s my birthday and my wedding anniversary. There are blossom trees flowering everywhere and forget-me-nots (my favourite flower) plus the weather is usually fairly warm (although I read a headline saying that we were about to have the coldest May on record!) I’m not going to let that bother me though because it’s May – and things are always a little brighter! It’s mid-Spring but it’s very nearly Summer.

Things always seem more possible in May – and, to top it all, there are two bank holidays.

Well, except this year because they’ve moved the 2nd one to June for the Queen’s Jubilee. So, I wish you all a very Happy May and hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to!

OUR GARDEN KITCHEN I’m so excited because my husband has almost finished building our garden kitchen! It’s in a part of the garden we never really used before so it’s a great addition – and we’re looking forward to firing up the pizza oven and having loads of barbecues. I think we’ve all been using our gardens so much more since the start of the covid pandemic and it’s one of the changes I think will stick. And with the cost of living skyrocketing at the moment, eating al fresco in the garden on a summer’s evening doesn’t sound too bad at all!

TOO GOOD TO GO Talking about the cost of living – have you heard of an app called ‘Too Good to Go’? It was created back in 2015 in Denmark as a way of eliminating food waste – and it’s been catching on around the world ever since. A lovely lady I met dog walking told me about it recently – and it sounded too good to be true – but she’s used it herself with great results. Basically, it connects you with extra or leftover food from local restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, bakeries etc who sell it to you at a reduced price to help fight food waste. Such a simple and fantastic idea. I knew shops did this but I didn’t realise there was an app that organised it all for you. When food is wasted, it also wastes the energy and water it took to grow and package it. Food also ends up in landfills producing methane, which is a greenhouse gas and more potent than carbon dioxide.

So while saving money, you have the added bonus of helping to protect our beautiful planet. I’m going to give it a go! Are you?
