Here at East Riding Archives we launched a virtual ‘time machine’ in 2019. It was called the ‘What Was Here’ app, free to download on smartphones, and since then it has cemented its place as a heritage tourism experience for the region with two Finalist nominations in the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards ‘REYTA’s. The time machine has now been given a few tweaks, had a spring clean, and had its design refreshed, and it’s ready to take people into the past. Everyone loves a good heritage trail, and there are now over 21 of these across the Hull and East Yorkshire region, packed onto one app. As well as a new face, the app comes with new mini quizzes and audio commentary features on some of these trails, which adds extra fun to your tour through time. The ‘What Was Here?’ app has always been a window on the past, where you can look through time at an old scene from the location where it was photographed, but until now it’s only been possible to use the ‘Camera View’ to phase between past and present in the Trails section. Now, we’ve opened up several of these
‘time portals’ across the East Riding for you to discover using the ‘Map’ function. It’s a great way to get active and guide yourself around the region to see how many you can find. We’re also asking for your help and encourage you to leave a review in the app stores once you’ve downloaded and checked it out. And, if you take part in our simple survey by 21st August, you’ll be entered into our free prize draw to win an Amazon Echo Dot! One other thing you’ll notice on our app homepage is that lots of amazing organisations and projects have partnered with us on ‘What Was Here?’ to add their own heritage trails to the time travelling experience, including Visit Hull, Visit East Yorkshire, Burton Constable Hall, The Humber Bridge Board, East Riding Festival of Words, Hessle Mill Quarry To Country Park project, Bridlington Townscape Heritage, Sewerby Hall & Gardens, North Yorkshire County Council, with more and more coming onboard the time travelling journey. ‘What Was Here?’ is free in app stores, and you can find out more about the survey at www.eastridingarchives. blog .

Yorkshire and North West top the table in Zoopla’s house price index with more growth forecast Zoopla reveals how much Yorkshire house prices have risen and predicts what will happen next
Annual house price growth was up 5.4% in June, more than double the year-on-year growth recorded at the same time last year, according to Zoopla’s latest data. While Northern Ireland and Wales registered the UK’s highest increases with 8.6% and 8.4% respectively, the North West and Yorkshire topped England’s regional table. House prices in the North West have shot up by 7.3% over the past year, while Yorkshire and the Humber recorded a 6.8% rise. Zoopla’s city index shows that Liverpool had the greatest growth in prices between June 2020 and June 2021 with 8.9%, followed by Belfast 7.7% and Manchester 7.4%. Sheffield was fourth in the table with a 7% gain and Leeds is in sixth with 6.1%. Meanwhile, in an unprecedented turn of events due to the pandemic-induced flight to the suburbs and the country, London trails with annual house price growth of just 2.3%. Zoopla says that pricing is being supported in part by a severe shortage of homes for sale. There has been a 25% fall in the number of homes on the
New properties built by Beal Homes at West Hill in Kirk Ella market in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2020. Supply has now failed to keep pace with demand since January 2021, with no sign of a rebalance expected to play out imminently. Transaction volumes also show no signs of abating, with sales agreed running 22% ahead of average levels in 2020, though buyer demand dipped 9% in the first half of July after the initial stamp duty holiday ended, but overall remains elevated, up +80% compared to the average for this time of year. Patrick McCutcheon, Head of
Residential at Dacre, Son and Hartley estate agents says while there is likely to be a slight lull in property market activity over the summer, underlying demand will manifest itself in Autumn. Zoopla concur and say that the UK’s average house price growth is expected to edge upwards to 6% in the coming months before easing back towards the end of the year as the impact of the extended stamp duty holiday unwinds and the economic landscape becomes more challenging. Demand for family houses is up 114% compared to normal market conditions while demand for all types of houses, from terraced to detached, has more than doubled. By contrast, demand for flats has failed to keep pace and, as a result, prices growth is lagging at just 1.4%, the same annual rate of growth seen last year. This is due to the flight from apartments with little or no outside space, which many found difficult during lockdowns. The cladding and building safety scandal has also played a part in making apartments a less attractive proposition. Price growth for flats is highest in Scotland at 5.2% and East Midlands at 3.7% and weakest in London at -0.5% However, while inner London prices have lagged, evidence suggests it could regain momentum providing there are no further pandemic setbacks. Zoopla say the rental market has already bounced back, and the sales market is set to follow given its

proximity to offices and amenities. Grainne Gilmore, Head of Research, Zoopla, says: “Demand in the UK is moderating from record high levels earlier in the year, but remains significantly up from typical levels, signalling that above average activity levels will continue in the coming months. “Demand for houses is still outstripping demand for flats. To a certain extent this trend will have been augmented by the stamp duty holiday, with bigger savings on offer for larger properties typically houses. But underneath this, there is a continued drumbeat of demand for more space among buyers, both inside and outside, funnelling demand towards houses, resulting in stronger price growth for these properties.. ”London has a two-speed market at present, with domestic demand driving price growth in the outer boroughs, while the lack of international business and leisure travel is affecting demand in the more global real estate markets towards the centre of London. As COVID progresses at different rates across the world, unrestricted travel may not resume for some time yet, but when it does, demand will start to pick up once more. Overall buyer demand coupled with constrained supply signal that price growth will continue to rise in the coming months, peaking at around 6%, before falling back to between 4%5% by the end of 2021.”

House & Home In Gary’s new design, the old front door could be replaced by a window (A) and a curved hallway added behind the new main entrance (B). The garage (C) becomes part of the house
Interior Revamp Reworking the downstairs of this East Yorkshire home has transformed the space. Architect Gary Barker explains how to rethink a ground-floor layout.. Like many things in life, homes can look great on the outside but the inside can let them down. Whether you prefer cute and cottagey, with plenty of nooks to curl up in, or a sleek 21st-century design, most interiors can benefit from rethinking the way they’re laid out. Gary Barker, founder of Dream Developer, which specialises in making the most of unloved spaces, gives his advice on how one couple could adjust the layout of their home so it works better. Nick Ploughs, a TV music composer, lives on the outskirts of Beverley, East Yorkshire, with his wife Ali, a

graphic designer, and their three children. They bought the house in 2019. The location is superb, on the edge of The Westwood, and the property has a fantastic garden for the children to play in. The upstairs is perfect, providing the required four bedrooms and, above the garage, an all-important studio for Nick to work in. Downstairs, however, is another matter... THE SET-UP The ground floor has a range of problems. Starting at the front, it has a redundant door (where A is marked on the proposed layout) and a dark entrance hall. Nick and Ali use the door (B)

nearest to the drive, beside the garage (C), which they don’t use for their car. At the back of the house is a garden room that’s glazed on three sides, with a solid, vaulted roof. With improved insulation the garden room definitely has the potential to be a great space, but it needs to be better connected to the rest of the property.
Nick and Ali would also like a utility room.
The kitchen is at the front of the house and has no garden view. As the site is sloping, there are steps between the various rooms on the ground floor, which contributes to the feeling that the layout is awkward and doesn’t flow well. In addition to solving these problems,

THE SOLUTION As the integrated garage isn’t required, it could be converted to become part of the house. I propose using Reglit glazing panels to replace the existing garage door.

The garage has potential to become a home office
The cramped kitchen could be much more open plan privacy. Behind this glazed facade, a new playroom or home office could be created, and beyond that, a utility room. To solve the isolation of the garden room, I’m proposing that Nick and Ali combine it with a redesigned kitchen. The existing kitchen is a horseshoe arrangement, whereas the new design is much more open, with varied multi-use areas. As it blends into the garden room, it will be much brighter, with better access to the garden. The sink will have a view – perfect or working at while listening to The Archers. To address the layout ‘flow’, I’ve used a few tricks, such as making spaces wider where they need to be such as in the entrance hall. I’ve gone for curved walls and part-
Glazed panels could replace the former garage doors height partitions to allow light in and so that you can see the garden. Finally, I’ve moved the stairs to create more defined zones – note how different floors create a boundary between the kitchen and dining areas. One obvious way to improve flow is to go open plan. While this layout does that, it won’t be detrimental – the house is wide enough to ensure that the living area is a fair distance from the kitchen hob, and the various functions generally tuck nicely round the corner from each other. According to building regulations, as long as the first-floor windows are large enough to jump from in case of fire, the original hall and front door aren’t required – this
wouldn’t be the case if there were a second-floor loft conversion.
l Don’t think that architects only deal with new buildings and extensions. They’re just as skilful at reconfiguring an internal layout and can dramatically transform a space with just a few simple alterations.
It means the hall could be opened up, making the stairway area less gloomy. The original entrance door could be replaced by a window, and the area behind could be a quirky split-level office, homework station or simply a boot or store room.
l People don’t turn at right angles; use curved walls to allow more organic transitions between unaligned spaces.
THE VERDICT ‘We’re blown away by the design and how Gary has improved the look of the house and the flow of the ground floor,’ says Ali. ‘The clever use of windows will provide much needed natural light. I especially love the use of Reglit glazing to replace our dated garage doors.’

7 Tips for Designing Your Bedroom Learn how to think about light, layout, circulation and views to get the bedroom of your dreams.. Have you ever been in a room that just feels right? Nine times out of 10, it’s because it has a simple design that functions well. But creating a simple design is harder than it looks – particularly in bedrooms. Why? Because every bedroom absolutely has to have a bed in it. And beds are big and ungainly, and dictate the placement of every other object in the room. However, if you’re lucky enough to be planning a bedroom from scratch or renovating an existing bedroom, you can control the other elements and create a space that’s both practical and pretty. The bedrooms shown here manage that feat with panache. Even if you don’t have a great view, access to the outdoors or plenty of space to work with, the principles they embody and the simplicity they show can inspire your own bedroom design project.
Because the bedroom is one of the simplest rooms in the house, it’s often overlooked. One of the first steps to a great bedroom design is having an efficient and welldesigned floorplan that gives you everything you want – no matter
how much space you start with.
it’s because it’s simple and it works.
Here are seven tips to help you get the most out of your bedroom.
Circulation plans become a little more challenging with en suite rooms or bedrooms that have doors to the outside. To save on space, pay attention to where you locate the bathroom and wardrobe in your bedroom. Rooms that have bathroom or wardrobe access
Plan for simple circulation Try to keep your circulation on one side of the room. Hotels do a great job of this. There’s a reason 90% of hotels have the same floorplan –

House & Home bed wall, but what about chests of drawers, bedside tables, TVs, chairs and a desk? Work with your architect or designer to make sure there’s enough space beside the bed for tables and ample circulation, so you can access three sides of the mattress. Increase light and ventilation Locating your bedroom at the corner of your home can give you windows on two adjacent walls. This has the added benefit of allowing cross ventilation and a softer natural light. before the sleeping area, above left, require a longer hall. If you organise the circulation so the bathroom and wardrobe are accessed through the sleeping area, above right, you don’t need a separate hall, and you can add the circulation space into the room to make it feel larger, too. Focus on the view A bedroom always feels nicer when the first thing you experience is a pleasant view out of the window, as opposed to a view looking straight at the bed. If you’re designing a new bedroom or reworking an old one, try to come up with a layout that focuses on the vista, whether it’s something as stunning as a lake or as simple as your garden. Keep privacy in mind It’s always nice when you can leave the bedroom door open without
Take your time Great design takes a while and usually requires refining before you come up with the perfect plan for your lifestyle. Don’t rush through the design. It’s worth taking a little extra time up front to make sure you have a more efficient and functional plan in the end. Cynthia James Photography The truth is, great design doesn’t necessarily mean a space that’s overly complex and expensive to build. A space that functions better, costs less to build, is more efficient to run and is easier to maintain can be an outstanding example of great design.
forsaking all of your privacy. The small foyer in this layout provides separation from the family room. I always try to avoid designing a layout in which you look directly into the bedroom from a more public space, such as a living room, kitchen or family room. Connect with the outdoors While this might not be feasible in all climates, connecting a room with the outdoors is a great way to make the space feel larger and admit more natural light. If your bedroom is on the ground floor (or on the first floor with an adjacent terrace), adding a set of French windows can instantly increase visual space. Consider the furniture layout Your bedroom’s architecture should take your furniture into account. Bedroom floorplans usually have a

A Students Viewpoint
East Riding GCSE student, Ashley Muncaster, asks whether participation in sport can improve academic performance? The BBC recently published an article, based on research undertaken by the universities of Strathclyde and Dundee, suggesting that there is a direct and positive correlation between exercise and academic performance amongst children. The study was bold enough to suggest that adhering to the recommended 60 minutes of exercise per day could improve exam success by a whole grade at GCSE. A cursory look at the methodology applied in the research, reveals obvious weaknesses, the most significant of which was that the research was not adjusted for socio-economic factors such parent’s educational and income levels. Furthermore, one must remember that the research only showed a trend, rather than conclusive evidence - we all know that super smart maths geek who would faint at the sight of a ball and how often does the school jock turn out to be the smartest tool in the box? However, if we ignore those extremes then I believe a case can
definitely be made that for children of regular ability, exercise is likely to help academic performance in one way or another (even if, after reviewing the various academic papers written on the subject, it is clear that the depth into which this has been investigated is less than conclusive). In my experience, exercise has helped me achieve greater things at school, although I would hesitate to argue that it has made me intrinsically cleverer. As a youngster, I used to live in York where I took up competitive swimming. On average, I would train for around 12 hours a week and have a swim gala most weekend. There is no doubt that swimming at this level helped me in many areas of my life. I had to have the discipline to turn-up on time for my training, sometimes at the crack of dawn. Competing taught me how to control my nerves, which as one gets older and public exams start looming, is a really useful skill. Furthermore, in day-to-day life, having an activity that allowed me to let off some steam was definitely conducive towards my ability to concentrate for long periods of time, which in turn allowed me to take more from my academic lessons.
Now that I am at senior school, I participate in team sports such as rugby, hockey and cricket. These bring a plethora of new skills to the table: so the ability to work together with your peers to achieve the same goal is an invaluable skill when it comes to group work in the classroom. It also allows you to take other people’s ideas and incorporate them into your own, which when you think about it is what learning boils down to. In fact, perhaps the most important thing that sport teaches us is how to be taught. The often complicated technical and strategic requirements of sport mean that no matter how physically gifted a child may be, everyone has to listen to the coach, understand the instructions and execute them properly. This complex and demanding process is very important for the development of children. Another powerful argument for the positive outcome of sport is that it
helps channel children’s time in a positive direction and may even help prevent adolescents going ‘off the rails’. For example, those who are keen on sport are less likely to become involved in pastimes that are not only damaging for their sports but also their health, such as smoking or drug-taking. The fact that sport keeps you busy, means there is less time for messing about and getting into trouble which may lead to more serious behavioural issues that have a knock-on effect on academic success. To conclude, although the research into this subject is a bit patchy, it seems to me that those children who partake in a decent amount of exercise per day are probably likely to achieve better results academically. Doing loads of exercise will certainly not turn the average child into a boffin, but it will give them a large number of skills that will help them to reach their full potential in school and beyond. I also think that sport eliminates a number of the traps and temptations that may hinder a child’s ability to do as well as they could. I love my sport - it’s such a great way to make friends and develop social skills that will go far when it comes to succeeding in the real world. Oh, and did I mention that it’s really fun too.

curriculum that is broad and balanced. Small class sizes and well-qualified and highly experienced teachers. Small class sizes have many advantages. Froebel teachers can really focus instruction and as a result, can nurture each student as an individual and to differentiate instruction accordingly. A small class size also means students get to know
the desire of students to attend school. One of the reasons for this being is that the school has , the school has zero tolerance towards any nature of bullying and prides itself on the fact that its diverse and multi-faith community arrive at school every day, knowing that their learning experience is going to be a focused and enjoyable experience. The Best New Holiday Reads
Looking for something uplifting or moving to read in the sunshine? Our pick of new and notable reads – both from established authors and newcomers – offers a little something for everyone... The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller Before anyone else is awake, on a perfect August morning, Elle Bishop heads out for a swim in the glorious freshwater pond below The Paper Palace, the gently decaying summer camp in the back woods of Cape Cod where her family has spent every summer for generations. As she passes the house, Elle glances through the screen porch at the uncleared table from the dinner the previous evening: empty wine glasses, candle wax on the tablecloth. Then she dives beneath the surface of the freezing water to the shocking memory of the sudden passionate encounter she had the night before, up against the wall behind the house, as her husband and mother chatted to the guests inside. So begins a story that unfolds over 24 hours and across 50 years, as decades of family legacies, love, lies, secrets, and one unspeakable incident in her childhood lead Elle to the precipice of a life-changing decision. Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid Set in Malibu in 1983, this highly anticipated novel is Taylor Jenkins Reid’s follow-up to her acclaimed debut Daisy Jones & The Six. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, a talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their baby sister, Kit. The children of legendary singer Mick Riva, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over. By midnight the party will be completely out

of control – and by morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: a moment where they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them – and what they will leave behind. Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason Everyone tells Martha Friel she is clever and beautiful, a brilliant writer who has been loved every day of her adult life by one man, her husband Patrick. So why is everything broken? Why is Martha – on the edge of 40 – friendless, practically jobless and so often sad? And why did Patrick decide to leave? Maybe – as she has long believed – there is something wrong with her. Something that broke when a little bomb went off in her brain, at 17, and left her changed in a way that no doctor or therapist has ever been able to explain. Forced to return to her childhood home to live with her dysfunctional, bohemian parents (but without the help of her devoted, foul-mouthed sister Ingrid), Martha has one last chance to find out whether a life is ever too broken to fix – or whether, maybe, by starting over, she will get to write a better ending for herself. Palace of the Drowned by Christine Mangan It’s 1966 and Frankie Croy retreats to her friend’s vacant palazzo in Venice. Years have passed since the initial success of Frankie’s debut novel, and she has spent her career trying to live up to the expectations. Now, after a particularly scathing review of her most recent work, alongside a very public breakdown, she needs to recharge and get re-inspired. Then Gilly appears. A precocious young admirer eager to make friends, Gilly seems determined to insert herself into Frankie’s life. But there’s something about the young woman that makes Frankie think:
Get Your Business Noticed
how much of what Gilly tells her is the truth? As a series of lies and revelations emerge, the lives of these two women are tragically altered as the catastrophic 1966 flooding of Venice ravages the city. Suspenseful and transporting, Palace of the Drowned brings the mystery of Venice to life while delivering a twisted tale of ambition and human nature. The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams The Lucky Escape is the third novel from Laura Jane Williams, and having loved both Our Stop and The Love Square, we’re anticipating another great summer read. When the day finally comes for Annie to marry Alexander, the last thing she expects is to be left standing at the altar. She was so sure he was Mr Right. Now, she has no idea how she could have got it so wrong. After a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend who reminds her of who she used to be, Annie takes a vow of her own: she’ll say yes to every opportunity that comes her way from now on. Could a spontaneous trip with Patrick be the way to mend Annie’s heart? She’s about to find out as she embarks on her honeymoon – with a man who’s not her husband. My Phantoms by Gwendoline Riley Helen Grant is a mystery to her two daughters. Growing up, Bridget and her older sister Michelle were kept at a distance by their mum’s caginess and flair for the dramatic. Meanwhile, their Saturdays were spent with their father, a serial liar whose boasts and bluster were exhausting. Now Bridget is an academic in her 40s. She sees her mother once a year for a shared birthday dinner, they text occasionally about Mad Men and Elena Ferrante to feign a shared interest, and they have settled into a strained peace. But when Helen makes it clear that she wants more, it seems Bridget’s childhood struggle will have to be replayed. And as it becomes clear
that her mother’s life might end sooner than she thinks, Bridget struggles to know what forgiveness entails – and whether it’s possible to find meaning in a vanishing past and a relationship that never was.. The High House by Jessie Greengrass Francesca is Caro’s stepmother, and Pauly’s mother. A scientist, she can see what is going to happen. The high house was once her holiday home. Now looked after by locals Grandy and Sally, she has turned it into an ark, for when the time comes. The mill powers the generator, the orchard is carefully pruned, the greenhouse has all its glass intact. Almost a family, but not quite, they plant, store seed, and watch the weather carefully. Another stunning novel by Jessie Greengrass – author of the Women’s Prize For Fiction-shortlisted Sight – The High House explores the extraordinary and the everyday, how we get used to change that once seemed unthinkable, how we place the needs of our families against the needs of others – and who, if we had to, we would save. Before My Actual Heart Breaks by Tish Delaney When she was young, Mary Rattigan wanted to fly. She was going to take off like an angel from heaven and leave the madness of troubled Northern Ireland behind. Nothing but the ‘Land of Happy Ever After’ would do for her. But as a Catholic girl with a witch of a mother and a silent father, things did not go as she and her best friend Lizzie Magee had planned. Now, five children, 25 years, an end to the bombs and bullets, enough whiskey to sink a ship and endless wakes and sandwich teas later, Mary’s alone. She’s learned plenty of hard lessons and missed a hundred steps towards the life she’d always hoped for. Will she finally find the courage to ask for the love she deserves? Or is it too late? WATERCRESS AND MELON GAZPACHO WITH SEEDED OATCAKES
Chef Hossein Ghazaani, owner of Pizza Pan, Beverley says “I love a glass – or bowl of this – for breakfast, or for a mid-morning or afternoon snack. It’s peppery, iron-rich and refreshingly sweet. It also makes a delicious starter for lunch or dinner”.
Preparation 35 minutes • Cooking 15 minutes • Serves 4-5 Ingredients: FOR THE GAZPACHO 110g bag watercress 400g honeydew melon, peeled and de-seeded 460g ripe tomatoes, chopped 120g cucumber, chopped 50g (about 4) spring onions, chopped ½ chilli, de-seeded 2 sticks celery, chopped 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 2 tsp flaky salt or dry, flaked seaweed

Roy Woodcock’s
World of Wine There was a wine I was drinking last month and will be drinking this month; but then, apart from the odd glass of the fizzy variety at certain times, I won’t be drinking again until around the same time in 2022. . What is it? Well, I’m sure you could hazard a pretty good guess - rosé, of course! Like many, I regard rosé, in all its many forms, as a quintessential summer drink; enjoyed outside on a warm day. It reminds me of the first time I drove from France into Spain; stopping for an al fresco lunch in a fairly remote location (I can’t even remember where, now) and ordering wine and tapas. It was, I seem to think, a blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo. But what I do know is it was the perfect accompaniment. And it showed me that to enjoy rosé at its best, it has to be chilled. Although the profile of rosés has changed in recent years, with more full-bodied and dry-tasting wines better suited to go with food, I still find that once we lose the heat from the day I’m treading a more traditional path. What’s not in doubt is that rosé has enjoyed phenomenal success in recent years, helped in part by much better winemaking and, some might argue, by the changing climate, with warmer days giving more opportunities for sipping
from a glass of the pink stuff. So let’s look at the subject in a little more detail . . . Rosé is a type of wine made from red wine grapes, produced in a similar manner to red wine, but with reduced time fermenting with grape skins. This reduced skin contact gives rosé a pink hue and lighter flavour than that of red wine. Rosé is produced around the world, as it can be made from any red wine grape cultivated in any wine-growing region. It is typically a blended wine, made from a variety of different wine grapes, but it can also be a single varietal wine, made from one type of grape. For example, California is known for rosé wines made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir. Rosé gets its distinct pink colour through a production process known as maceration, the most common way to make pink wine. Red grapes are juiced and left to soak (macerate) with their skins for a day or two until the juice turns a subtle pink colour. The grape skins are then removed and the juice continues to ferment. The wine will get darker the longer the rosé is left to macerate with the skins. This is why rosé wines can range in colour from pale blush to bright pink. Rosé is not the same as a blush wine, which is a combination of red and white wine. Rosé wines can be either sweet or dry, but tend to err on the dry

side overall. Rosé produced in the Old World are typically bone dry. Rosé produced in the New World are often sweeter and have a more pronounced fruit flavour, which is due to variations in climate and production methods. Of course, there are exceptions where some New World wine makers mimic the style and methods of Old World producers. The epicentre of rosé production is Provence, France, where the majority of world’s rosé is produced. Provençal rosé is known for its dry and delicate taste and light orange-tinted pink colour. Rosé made in Provence is typically made from Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Syrah grapes. Rosé wine blends are made from a combination of different grape varietals. Some rosé wines lean more heavily on specific grapes, which create subdivisions, or different “types” or “styles,” of rosé. Each type of rosé wine has a slightly different flavour profile depending on the grapes used: Sangiovese rosé is generally an Italian wine, and is fruity but dry. Notes of fresh strawberries, green melon, and roses hit the palate with an acidic finish. Tempranillo rosé is often a Spanish variety and is savoury, dry, and has a fruity, yet meaty flavour profile. Syrah rosé is a bold, dry wine with notes of olive and cherry. It does not need to be served as cold as most rosé wines. Cabernet Sauvignon rosé is savoury, dry, and tastes much more like red wine than most other rosé wines. It is more acidic than regular Cabernet Sauvignon with notes of bell pepper, black currant, and spice.
White Zinfandel is a type of sweet rosé with moderately high acidity levels. Flavour notes of white zinfandel are lemon, melon, and strawberry. Tavel rosé is robust, savoury, rich, and very dry. Tavel has distinct fruit notes, but with an earthier and nuttier twist. Provence rosé is the most versatile and classic of rosé wines. This fruity and light wine pairs well with any cuisine and has notes of strawberry and rose petal. Mourvèdre rosé is a full-bodied rosé with initial floral notes that transform on the palate into a rich cherry, smoky, and meaty flavour. Pinot Noir rosé is a delicate and crisp rosé with notes of apple, strawberry, and melon. Rosé Champagne, or sparkling rosé, is Champagne blended with red wine. Rosé Champagne is stronger and more powerful in flavour than traditional Champagne. Champagne is the only region where it is legal to blend white and red wines together to create rosé. So, there we have it and remember, rules are meant to be broken - so, if this weather holds I could well be in the pink for a little while longer! But always remember, Rosé should always be chilled and served at approximately 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the bottle directly into the refrigerator after purchasing it, and chill for at least several hours before serving (30 minutes in the freezer will work in a pinch). Most sommeliers discourage the addition of ice cubes to any wine, since ice cubes will dilute and change the flavour of the wine as they melt.

Free taster sessions all through September. Our Try July event in summer was a great success, with learners returning to our centres to try new courses as well as signing up to our new virtual learning sessions.
That’s why we’re so excited to be launching our brand new Try timetable for September – and our newsletter subscribers are the first to hear about it.
As always, all of our Try courses are completely free, which makes them the ideal opportunity to try your hand at something completely different.
Would you like to learn how to write your own fiction? A Creative Writing taster might be just the place to start. Or would you like to change negative thoughts into positive ones and boost your self confidence? Why not try a Self Esteem and Confidence Building taster. What about learning how to get the most out of your camera and take
Is gluten-free worth it? Gluten is a protein found and eat more healthily. But are they any healthier? in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats. For around ‘There’s more to a gluten-free diet one in 100 people with than cutting out bread, cereal and coeliac disease it can cause pasta. Gluten is also found in beer, biscuits, soy sauce, noodles diarrhoea, weight loss and vinegar, and crisps, among many other foods, fatigue. Now people who so cutting it out entirely takes effort and planning,’ says Janie Kinnersley don’t have this condition a food relationship practitioner. are removing it from their diets in a bid to lose weight ‘I’m gluten-free because gluten

There are far too many courses to list here, so head on over to our website to see the full list. And as always, if you want to get in touch you can always give us a call on (01482) 887670 or email learn@ eastriding.gov.uk. doesn’t agree with me. Since switching, my levels of stamina and energy have increased, but I’m not suggesting that people opt for this to be healthier.’ Many people also think a gluten-free diet will help them lose weight, but this isn’t entirely true, as dietitian Hedi La-Roco, explains: ‘A-one-sizefitsall approach doesn’t work as each person has specific needs. Often gluten-free products are really high in sugars and calories. ‘Avoiding processed foods in favour of more fruit and veg is always a good idea but choosing gluten-free without the medical need for it doesn’t necessarily guarantee success and may actually lead to weight gain!’ Is a GF diet an ideal one? If you have coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, the answer is a firm yes; for everyone else, not necessarily. There is no reason for you to exclude wheat products from your diet, and it can sometimes lead you to make less healthful choices. For example, if you have a choice between quinoa (gluten-free) and white bread, the gluten-free choice is better. However, if you are in a situation where your choice is between sprouted wheat bread and a heavily processed GF product, the wheat product is going to have more nutrients and be the better option. Choosing foods that are less processed and eating
more fruits and vegetables is likely to be healthier than going GF for individuals who can tolerate gluten. That said, it is possible to eat a balanced GF diet; it just takes extra work, and tends to cost considerably more money. Also, remember that what works for you might not necessarily work for someone else. Just because someone says going gluten-free is helpful, it does not mean it is automatically beneficial for everyone else. We recommend consulting a registered dietitian if you go GF to ensure your diet meets your nutritional requirements. What should I do if I am worried that gluten might be a problem for me? If you think you might have coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, see your doctor before going on a glutenfree diet. Express your concerns with your doctor, and ask to be tested for coeliac disease. A blood test can tell with 99% accuracy whether you have coeliac disease, but the tests don’t work properly if you aren’t eating gluten. In addition, whatever symptoms you are experiencing that lead you to believe that gluten is harming you could be caused by another disease or disorder that requires a different treatment method. Whether you are diagnosed with a gluten-related disorder, or find another cause of your symptoms, it’s best to have a doctor’s opinion before taking your health into your own hands.

The New Citroën C3 Aircross
Roy Woodcock takes a Shine to the new “baby SUV” from Citroën - the Citroën C3 Aircross . . . . A new study by Citroën of UK drivers has revealed that 40 per cent believe comfort is key to avoiding road rage. Two thousand were questioned and a staggering 62 per cent admitted to having experienced road rage themselves, and 47 per cent said they had been a victim of another drivers’ road rage. The research found that being cut up on the road is the main cause of road rage while other traits commonly causing anger included being over-taken inappropriately and drivers failing to indicate. City and town centres were where drivers struggled to keep their cool the most, whilst tackling roundabouts and driving on motorways were also noted as regular hot spots for anger. I mention all this because I’ve been driving the new Citroën C3 Aircross - a small SUV that the car company claims has been designed with serenity and wellbeing in mind. Yes, really! Probing this a little further I discover their claims basically boil down to the fact that the top of the range model (called Shine Plus) comes with what are described as “Advanced Comfort” seats. Think mattress topper - what we’re talking about is an extra 15mm of foam added to each seat. Hmmm … I’m not sure this adds
up to that much, in all honesty. I’m not decrying or denigrating the car on that one, shall we say, “extreme” claim, because the seats were comfortable and I did like the car. But it strikes me as PR hyperbole taken one step too far. Essentially, it’s an upgraded version of the car first launched in 2017 and this new model has been in showrooms since the end of June; available from £17,320 – an increase of just a few hundred pounds over the outgoing model. There are three trim levels (C-Series/Shine/Shine Plus), but whichever you choose you’ll be pleased with a well designed and spacious car that exudes great road presence. There’s that raised seating position we all seem to like these days; it’s very practical but with oodles of classy touches that make you feel you’re being noticed with a degree of envy. There’s a wide choice of colour combinations and exterior styles, too, for the ultimate in personalisation, including bi-tone roof options and a total of five exterior colour packs. The core model features diamondcut 16-inch alloy wheels, black roof bars and the Anodised Regal Red Colour Pack with a monotone roof, as standard. Automatic ecoLED headlights and LED daytime running lights combine with separate fog lamps at the front of the car. At the rear, parking sensors also feature as standard. The re-designed centre console provides enhanced stowage and cup holders, and the Graphite Grey upholstery combines with white stitching and satin chrome trim for a premium feel. Advanced technology includes a six-speaker infotainment system with DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity, all controlled via a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Black exterior Colour Pack with the “Reflective” rear quarter-light design

helps to identify the Shine model on the outside, while Mica Grey cloth upholstery and chrome trim features inside. Practicality is enhanced by the “Flex Load / Pull Out” boot floor, while connectivity is boosted by a larger nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with Citroën Connect Nav (includes three-year subscription to Real Time Traffic and alerts). Advanced safety is provided by Active Safety Brake with Forward Collision Alert. Top of the range Shine Plus specification includes a White Colour Pack, a black bi-tone roof, larger 17-inch alloy wheels and the upgraded Metropolitan Graphite interior – which adds those “Comfort” seats, a gloss black centre console and satin chrome trim.
Front parking sensors and a rear vision camera aid low speed manoeuvring, while keyless entry and start delivers enhanced convenience. Practicality is boosted by a flat-folding front passenger seat and sliding 60/40 split rear bench. The folding front passenger seat gives New C3 Aircross SUV a maximum load length of 2.40m – ideal for transporting long objects such as furniture and sports equipment. In terms of safety features, the new C3 Aircross SUV comes as standard with lane departure warning, traffic sign and speed limit recognition, cruise control with speed limiter and “coffee break alert”.
Motoring It’s also available with Citroën Connect Box Emergency and Assistance (Shine & Shine Plus) – which automatically alerts the emergency services in the event of an accident. The new car can be ordered with a range of PureTech petrol engines, and an efficient BlueHDi Diesel – all of which meet the latestgeneration Euro 6d emissions
standard. The seven-model range tops out from £23,080 for a 1.2-litre, 130bhp, automatic Shine Plus model while diesels are priced from £21,060 in Shine trim. In short, a much improved model that’s well worth more than a second look. For more information please visit: https://www.citroen.co.uk/

Kiah Lamb takes to the road for a family caravan holiday
Coming from a family whose summer holidays were spent mainly in caravans, whether static or towed, holidaying with my own family in the same vein was going to be pretty nostalgic. I have always loved the freedom these holidays give… discovery and adventure without too much planning. Having enjoyed travelling around by campervan in our twenties, when we would set up for a few days, fire up the BBQ, open a Shiraz and relax, we realised that with a child now ‘in tow’, things did have to be a little more planned. With this in mind, we opted for a towing caravan and joined the ranks of the other million or so people in the UK who tow their summer home to their chosen destination (the Caravan Club has approximately 850,000 members). We decided to hire a caravan, an option not that widely known about but a great idea; trying out
sizes and styles will help avoid costly mistakes if you do come to make a purchase. Some companies will even tow the caravan to a destination of your choice and set it up for you, with hot and cold running water ready for your arrival. Never ones to shy away from a challenge, we decided to go the whole nine yards and tow and set-up ourselves. Before setting off, we received a thorough briefing and once we’d successfully completed a few trial runs hooking-up the utilities, we set off. I was surprised how dragging over 1000kgs of metal and fibreglass changed the drive of the car (go figure!) but after a while I got used to the little wiggle it can throw back at you and we were merrily cruising along. As we approached our pitch, we begin to replay the instructions given to us for our arrival: ‘release the wheel’, ‘drop the legs’, ‘plug in the water pipe’, ‘hook up to the electric’ and ‘blue in the bottom and pink in the top’ (toilet). Thankfully, we remembered our briefing with only a few minor glitches and were set up in what seemed liked a matter of minutes. Sitting back, we admired the space we would call ‘home’ for a few days.
Our caravan was a four-berth Sprite caravan, an ideal introduction to first time towing due to its lightweight chassis and compact size. Inside, it was well finished and the fittings were all modern and clean. Featuring the usual clever conversions, we had a seating area that turned into a double bed and a dining space that collapsed down to provide bunk beds. The kitchen housed everything you could need with a built-in fridge, gas cooker/grill and sink. Most exciting for me though was the bathroom facility. Historically, our campervan days had involved nocturnal visits to the
communal site loos, torch in hand, but this was to be no more! No bigger than a small wardrobe, the bathroom was more than adequate for washing children, although two six-foot parents did find that showering in the campsite facilities was slightly easier. Sufficient space is essential, especially with the amount of ‘kit’ that travelling with children entails. As newbies, we went for a compact caravan, not wanting to bite off more than we could chew, but I would suggest going for the biggest vehicle your budget allows. Also, a space saving tip would be to shop for food nearer to the destination, perhaps once you have set-up on site. With the car able to be detached (unlike a campervan), we enjoyed being able to explore the local area by car. Prams, cream, wipes, emergency clothes, picnics and beach accessories are not so easy to transport on a bike! I would say that the caravan (towed or static) made for an easier holiday than a campervan due to the freedom of having a separate vehicle (and so not having to constantly stow everything away). There’s no doubt that a self-catering holiday such as this does require a certain amount of work but with many campsites housing excellent facilities, you should find plenty of time to chill-out while the kids have fun. We’ll definitely be booking another caravan holiday next year as it offers good value and fun experience for the whole family.

Staycations vs Abroad …
The UK has so much to offer and there are holidays to suit everyone. I have a strong feeling that many opting for a holiday in the UK this year many will want to see more of our beautiful country in the years to come. Especially those who enjoy culture and spectacular scenery. We have coach holidays or self drive options for a traditional beach holiday but over the years even younger holiday makers have started to look for adventure and activities rather than wanting just sun, sand and nightlife. I recall being in Scotland on the shores of Loch Linnhe by Fort William and a group of senior ladies were discussing their outing for the day on their coach holiday. The drive was 2 hours each way and they were disgruntled as why where they having such a long journey to see a castle. I pointed out to them it was not just a journey but they were going to encounter stunning scenery. I then watched as they boarded their coach! Unfortunately I was not around on their return as our tour was moving on to the Isle of Skye via the Jacobite train. These ladies would probably have been better suited to the seaside with tea rooms and shops. Don’t be afraid when making a booking to point out what you are looking to do whilst away e.g entertainment, shops, museums etc. Cities are a little quieter this year so why not explore without the crowds? London has so much to offer museums, many of these offer free entry. Views from overhead via the London Eye, Shard, Gherkin or even from your hotel room. I stayed at the Royal Lancaster on a high floor and had wonderful views over Hyde Park. There are fantastic opportunities for Theatre lovers and amazing restaurants for those who enjoy their food. We are lucky to have direct trains to London from Hull but, for those wanting to take in a special attraction or experience, coach holidays offer Tower Tea great value for money. For example:- A night at the 5* Waldorf including Afternoon tea for just £179 per person! A Tower Tea & the Shard experience 2 days £199. August 20th a 3 day London Explorer for £189 staying at the Mercure London Bridge close to the Tate Modern Gallery, London Eye & Tower Bridge. All pick up in Beverley, Hull & Hessle. There is still plenty of availability to get away in the UK whether you are looking to head to the mountains, seaside, hire a boat on the Broads or a canal alternatively look to enjoy one or several of our wonderful cities. As a travel agent we know where to look to get you away rather than you looking for a needle in a haystack. For those preferring to still look to travelling abroad resort stays are opening with some degree of success whilst foreign touring holidays outside of Europe or incorporating more than one country are mostly cancelled for September and October is in jepodie as I write. We have also had the go ahead for international cruising from this month but again the countries being visited need to accept ships docking. It is still a complicated business with forms and covid tests. Ensure your insurance covers you and that you have 6 months validity on your passport which is only valid for 10 years from the date of issue regardless of the expiry date printed. I have to say I had a wonderful experience last month aboard the Tall Ship Golden Horizon the experience under sail was amazing even though we were only in the English Channel. You cannot beat a new experience. In September she is cruising in Croatia and we have excellent rates available. Hopefully she will be able to welcome guests on board. If you wish to book your monies are protected if travel is impossible. We are now booking cruises into 2024, full world cruises are selling out so quickly guests making up for lost time. 2022 bookings are now coming in especially for May onwards. Mainly to European destinations for beach holidays and city stays. Many cruisers are opting for single destinations. Norway, UK, Iceland & Ireland are popular with more scenic cruising than port rich itineraries. When planning our own tours I am including as many meals as possible as it is not always possible to get a restaurant on spec. If you are travelling anywhere bear this in mind and try to plan ahead. At least we have a little more normality and with covid rates on the decline lets hope it continues. We have lost many precious months not being able to enjoy our normal lifestyle I have to say even a day out feels like a holiday. It very much reminds me of the 60’s. Yet perhaps in years to come we will be having a ride on a space ship. It’s not really for me but I am sure there are many will have it on their bucket list. At Marion Owen Travel we offer a full portfolio of holidays by all modes of transport so don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us organise your next life enriching adventure where ever in the world it may be. Our office is open now part time to visitors 10am to 2pm but we are available via the telephone everyday as normal. We look forward to hearing from you.

My Guide To Tackling Frizz In The Heat Excessive frizz is one of those hair issues many of us struggle with yearround, but the heat and humidity make it worse. Thankfully, there are ways to keep your hair looking smooth and sleek at this time of year – from specific product recommendations to the styling hacks anyone can master, here’s what the pros recommend… Understand Why It Happens “Frizz can happen at any time of the year, but it tends to worse in the summer, this is because the humidity levels in the air are higher, and our hair is extremely sensitive to humidity. In the simplest terms, frizz happens when your hair becomes dry, or when it’s lacking in moisture.” A close friend; Patrick James, Kérastase Expert and Hairstylist, agrees: “When your hair is dry, the cuticle is rough, which is why hot, humid weather becomes the perfect cocktail for frizz. The outer layer takes in moisture from the air, causing strands to swell and become ‘poofy’, for want of a better word.” Master Some Easy Styling Hacks “Try styling your hair when it is wet or damp, this doesn’t mean doing a full, sleek blow-dry, but leaving your hair to air dry naturally with zero product will likely contribute to the amount of frizz you have – when your hair is completely dry, it will struggle to absorb product as much. Other tips would be to try a silk pillowcase or a silk scrunchie. Both will help you to avoid any friction, and in turn, reduce the levels of frizz – especially if you tend to move a lot in the night.” Patrick adds: “Think about starting from the inside, too. Your food choices are just as key – oily finish,

nuts, avocado and plenty of water will help to create strong, healthy hair that’s less prone to breakage and friction.” Stock Up On The Right Products “A good hair oil can help to lock in moisture,” advises Patrick. “My favourite is the Discipline Huile OleoRelax, by Kerastase. It’s an anti-frizz product, and you can use it on wet or dry hair. Not only does it protect against heat and humidity, it provides great shine, too. Use one to two pumps then run it through your hair evenly.” He also adds: “A simple smoothing cream will work wonders, too, and I always keep the L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Liss Control Cream nearby. It has 24-hour humidity control and is great for smoothing frizz and flyaways. Pop a few drops onto towel dried hair, spread it throughout your lengths with a comb, then let it dry naturally, or blow-dry. Also, invest in a multi-purpose spray or cream – there are so many on the market that work as a leave-in conditioner and heat protector, too, so you’re tackling frizz, while conditioning simultaneously – try Briogeo Farewell Frizz Milk Leave-In Conditioner if you’re not sure where to start.” Practise The Toothbrush Trick “If you’re short on time, the easiest

way to tame flyaways and frizz is with a toothbrush,” says Rebekah. “Use any old one you have lying around, or invest in a simple, bamboo brush – these have soft, but firm bristles – and brush the hairs into place. When you’re done, use a touch of hairspray on the tips of the brush and continue to lay everything down into place. It’s the oldest trick in the book, but it works.” Make Time For Masks “Hydrating masks are a must for those with frizzy or unruly hair,” continues Patrick. “Your hair needs a product that will add moisture and then seal it in after, which is why masks are great for those who suffer with frizz. You want one that won’t weigh your down, so look to lightweight formulas – you can try leave-in milks and mists for something less heavy. Another benefit is masks help to shield the hair surface from drying out, so you’re less likely to get flyaways or baby hairs resurfacing throughout the day.” Rebekah agrees: “There are heaps of hydrating masks on the market, but try to look for ones that contain ingredients like gold quinoa and protein, like L’Oréal’s Professionnel Absolute Repair Mask
shampoo to lock that hydration in, and a mask once or twice a week to avoid your hair becoming too dry.” Use Conditioner Wisely “The wet look is one of the best ways to get rid of frizz and flyaways,” says Rebekah. “Try doing this style with your conditioner. There is nothing chicer than a low bun, with a slicked back parting. Generously apply a mask or treatment to your hair using a tangle-free brush, and direct your hair back into a low pony or bun. Secure and plait the ponytail, twist into a loose chignon, then pin everything into place. By slicking back the hair with conditioner at the start, you’re allowing your hair to be nourished, but it also looks cool, and no one will know you’re battling flyaways at the same time.” Speak To An Expert “My final tip if frizz is bothering you, is to speak to your stylist during your next salon visit,” finishes Rebekah. “Different hair types need to be treated differently and often, it has to be a treatment plan that’s bespoke to you. Experts will be able to help you with a routine, product suggestions for your individual hair type and advice on how you can best manage your frizz, so don’t be afraid to ask for some extra advice.” Finally, Some Key Dos & Don’ts When Taming Frizz… l DO use a deep conditioning treatment once a week.
– these formulas work to replenish, hydrate and strengthen the hair, while leaving behind a protective veil of moisture that holds up in warmer, humid climates.” Give Shampoo A Break “Another thing is to not over shampoo,” explains Rebekah. “If you continue to wash your hair too often and you’re not using a good, hydrating shampoo, it can easily dry it out and strip it of moisture. The result? You’ll cause more frizz. Make sure you’re using a nourishing

Hull City - with Woody Mellor
Back to the Championship
A statistic from the early 90’s placed Hull City and Barnsley as the two sides who had spent the majority of their seasons in Division 2 or the Championship as it is now known. Little did we expect twelve months ago that we would just spend the one season back in the lower divisions. The fear was that City were in the same downwards trajectory we had seen before in the late seventies or the Fish and Dolan era. But we are back. Whether it is where we belong is another question after three spells in the Premier League but the bad dream is over. We fell asleep during a win-less run in the Championship. This turned into a nightmare but we have now woken up again, following several pleasant dreams, back where we left it. We left wondering if City were still a genuine Championship team and we return with these same thoughts. There has been a considerable number of new signings but as we approach kick off their quality is unknown as all seven are free transfers or loans from Premier League Clubs. There was hope that City would sign Slater from Sheffield United and maybe Charles from Accrington but these dreams came to an end with a transfer embargo in July. City have taken out a loan from the EFL of maybe £500,000 to £1 million to help them overcome the financial difficulties of a season without paying spectators. This was a bit of a shock is all seemed to be going well not least through the continued transfer payments for Maguire and Bowen. Maybe promotion bonuses and increased wages have contributed to these issues. Several players appear to be Premier League players of potential. Brighton forward Ryan Longman has made the biggest impression in the friendlies, Chelsea goalie Nathan Baxter has been on loan at several clubs including Accrington last season and Manchester United central defender Di’Shon Bernard recently signed a new four-year deal so they must rate him. It is also anticipated that highly rated Manchester City midfielder Matt Smith is to join within days. Other signings have lower division experience such as midfielder Andy Cannon from Portsmouth and Randell Wiliams from Exeter who both ran down their contracts and City and other clubs were in

relegation team but will youthful spirit compete against recently relegated Premier League Teams? The success and relative success of Brentford and Barnsley last season showed that smaller teams with astute signings could compete with the so-called big boys of this league. The irony of all this is that theoretically bigger teams such as Fulham or Sheffield United aren’t that significant any more. After regular fixtures against the likes of Arsenal or Liverpool the Championship isn’t such a big step forward. It’s nice to return from obscurity but it takes a lot more than Championship football to bring back the missing thousands.
a relatively big money transfer chase for him the previous summer. George Moncur is an attacking midfielder released by Luton Town but seems fairly highly rated at his previous clubs. Although City have made signings injuries have already had an impact with several key players yet to make a pre-season appearance noticeably Wilks and Elder and worst of all George Honeyman is out for the crucial first month of the season. The heartbeat of the team is missing for the opening games which make a big difference to our coming season. They need to get point on the board early or this young and relatively inexperienced team could lose confidence and last season’s momentum. The aim for the coming season has to be survival. As much as one would like to dream that they could be as successful as Sheffield United and go through two divisions just keeping up is the priority. Keeping hold of our young talent has to be another ambition as the likes of Greaves and Keane Lewis - Potter will continue to attract attention from bigger clubs and further local youngsters may also gain opportunities this season It will be very strange attending matches once again at the MKM Stadium after an absence of seventeen months and it remains to be seen how many football fans will return after such a long gap. There is little likelihood of big crowds once again but let’s hope many of the 2019-2020 fans return and haven’t lost interest or found new interests. Grant Mccann surprised everyone last season but will he be successful once again? Will he be found out tactically once again or will City’s confidence and team spirit carry them forward for this season. There is far more spirit than within the
Get Your Business Noticed
The only way is up. We have returned in one season, lots of talented young players need to step another gear, the opposition are not that daunting even with bigger gates or budgets and we may even see one last hurrah from Tom Huddlestone?

Famous landmarks are the Black Mill and Anti-Mill with a traditional style club house built around it. The 18 hole course is one of Yorkshire’s finest and most natural layouts, enjoying outstanding views of the town and surrounding countryside from many vantage points. The club has a historic past but has not stood still and welcomes beginners of any age and players of all standards to come and enjoy
this very unique course. During the last eighteen months the Club has set up an Academy scheme which is proving a real success and has already recruited six groups, with more planned to meet demand. So if you fancy having a go, just come along and try it! You don’t need any special equipment or clothing, we provide a set of clubs for you to use during your three month membership and just suggest you wear comfortable clothing and shoes. At the price of £90 this is tremendous value for money and the lessons are held on either weekend or evening to suit your lifestyle. This sport is a ‘covid safe’ way to get fitter and an activity that the whole family can enjoy together. Our coaching team of Paul and Theo offer group lessons for both adults and juniors of all ages and can always offer advice on how to start playing this wonderful game. Gardening
GROWING BENEFITS
Sow the seeds of good health this Summer with a generous dose of gardening. As well as the obvious physical workout, it has many more deep-rooted advantages...
Gardening’s potential boost to health is so great that a number of experts are calling for doctors to prescribe it on the NHS – and several trials are already in place. “I have, for some time, thought that doctors should offer a course of gardening for people who come to them with depression or who have suffered from a stroke,” says Sir Richard Thompson, former president of the Royal College of Physicians and patron of gardening therapy charity Thrive (thrive.org.uk). “Drug treatments can be really expensive, but gardening costs little and anyone can do it. It burns calories, makes joints supple and is fantastic exercise, too. It has also been shown to be
helpful in tackling anxiety, depression and dementia.” PRUNE BACK STRESS “We’re designed to be hunter gatherers, so when we see plants, water, green space – all things you find in gardens – we have an innate connection,” explains Dr William Bird, a GP as well as a member of the Physical Activity Strategy board for Public Health England. It’s this link, known as ‘biophilia’, that has the ability to reduce stress levels. “Within moments of going into a park or garden, blood pressure lowers and muscle tension eases,” Dr Bird adds. It’s a benefit that many people have experienced at a number of projects around the UK. On the banks of the Water of Leith in Edinburgh is the beautiful 18thcentury Redhall Walled Garden, run to organic principles, with an Iron Age roundhouse and pretty herb garden. Like many of these places, it’s open to the public from Monday to Friday* – but more unusually, it’s managed by the Scottish Association for Mental Health and maintained by a team of 50 ‘trainees’, all of whom are recovering from mental health
problems. “Those involved in gardening are more active, and so have a greater sense of wellbeing and lower rates of depression and anxiety,” confirms Paul Forrest, Redhall’s senior horticulture instructor. “It can also increase energy levels, improve mood, and help with stress and tension.” According to mental health charity Mind, at least one in four British adults will experience some kind of mental health problem in any one year. With prescriptions for antidepressants at record levels, gardening therapy can offer a cost-effective alternative for many people. John, 47, worked for an insurance company for 27 years until a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease meant an eight-month stay in hospital: “I lost my confidence and became depressed. I struggled to get out of the house – travelling filled me with anxiety. My support worker suggested that I attend Redhall Walled Garden to help me recover. I had never even planted a seed, so I didn’t think it would be my thing, but it’s been such a positive experience.” The benefits are wide-reaching when it comes to helping those with psychological problems, but also anyone who is exhausted from juggling a busy lifestyle. “It’s about quiet, focused work away from the hustle and bustle of modern life,” Paul Forrest says. “The satisfaction of watching a plant grow can really help to ease the pressure that we all feel at times from day-to-day life.” GROW WITH FRIENDS While pottering on your own is good, digging with someone else is better. Whether it’s a therapy project, working on the allotment or being part of a club, the

community aspect of gardening can have many benefits. “It’s good at getting people to engage, particularly those who find it difficult,” explains Timothy Lang, professor of food policy at City University and president of Garden Organic. Gardening is a great leveller and at Redhall Walled Garden, staff from Jo Malone London work there on volunteer days. “Everyone gardens together – staff, trainees and the Jo Malone volunteers,” says Redhall trainee John. “This takes away a ‘them and us’ feeling. The renewed feeling of worth was a huge factor in my recovery.” As well as bonding over a new border, a task like weeding can reduce inhibitions about talking to others. “It’s easier to open up about something that’s bothering you while doing something,” Paul Forrest says. “The advantage of talking while gardening is that you don’t have to face the other person – you often work side by side – and this can make it easier to say what’s on your mind.” CULTIVATE HEALTH Of course, time spent digging, planting and pruning will keep you in shape – it can burn around 400 calories an hour, and all that bending keeps you supple. Growing your own fruit and vegetables is, perhaps, the best form of gardening. It can establish a psychological link between what you plant and what you put on your plate, and studies prove that people who grow their own food tend to eat more healthily. “A number of school projects show that children who are involved with cultivating fruit and vegetables are more likely to eat them,” Professor Lang says.
Gardening NURTURE RECOVERY The psychological effect of being in a garden, or looking at one, can also have an impact on people recovering from illness. A study published in the journal Science reviewed the medical records of people who were recuperating from gallbladder surgery in a US hospital. The researchers discovered that patients with bedside windows looking out on trees healed, on average, a day faster, needed less pain medication and had fewer post-surgical complications than patients who had a view of a brick wall, while research from Thrive’s programme of gardening with stroke patients found that five out of seven participants reported a reduction or elimination of pain
and sleep medication, and no need for speech or physiotherapy sessions. And it’s not just looking at the greenery that can help. Scientists now believe that getting your hands muddy could be key. One study found that lung cancer patients treated with bacteria usually found in the soil reported improvements in their quality of life. “The act of being in greenery is good for human health. We are hard-wired to feel better and get well when looking at trees rather than buildings,” Professor Lang explains. So get your gardening gloves on and start digging for health.
Jobs to do in August August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune Wisteria and summer-flowering shrubs such as lavender once they’ve finished flowering. 1 Prune Wisteria 2 Don’t delay summer pruning fruits trained as restricted forms 3 Deadhead flowering plants regularly 4 Watering! particularly containers, and new plants, preferably with grey recycled water or rainwater 5 Collect seed from garden plants 6 Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready

Mow lightly and frequently so that short grass clippings can remain on the lawn during hot summers to act as a moisture-retentive mulch. Excess thatch can be scarified out during autumn maintenance next month. Mulching mowers cut the clippings even finer than normal rotary blades, making the mulch less visible. Lawns on thin soils may benefit from a high phosphate feed. This will strengthen the roots for winter, rather than encouraging lush top growth that could suffer in the cold and weaken the grass. Avoid using lawn weedkillers in late summer - they will be more effective in the cooler, damper autumn weather.

FIONA’S FOOD FOR THOUGHT
By Fiona Dwyer - Journalist, PR Consultant, DIY Your Biz PR Course Creator, Wife & Mum to two teenagers! NEW BEGINNINGS
There has been such an increase in startups over the last year as people look for new ways of earning or simply reflect on what’s important in their lives. It could be for any number of reasons – uncertainty over their current job situation or they may have lost their job, others have decided they want to spend more quality time with family and friends, being able to do what they want, when they want. For those of you who don’t know, I left Calendar News at the end of March. I’m now focusing full-time on my PR consultancy – but I was also ready for a new venture, something I’ve been wanting to do for a few years now. So, I gave myself a deadline - and I have spent the last 3 months following the most amazing programme, supported by around 150 other entrepreneurial women from all around the world – and as a result, I have created an online course called DIY Your Biz PR which shows businesses how to DIY their own PR and raise their own profile. It’s been so inspiring and I have made some great friends and contacts along the way. If you don’t already, please follow me @FDPRMedia on Facebook and Instagram for lots of PR Tips and Tricks – and you can get more information about my course if you’re interested. But my real point is this - if you have an idea inside of you, something that inspires you, something that you know will help other people, don’t keep it to yourself! Get it out there, be of service – and most of all, have fun making your idea become a reality!
GOING ANYWHERE NICE?
What are you doing this summer? Going abroad, having a staycation or staying at home? We were hoping to go down to Devon or Cornwall, but we clearly left it far too late – there wasn’t a single cottage or holiday home available – and that seemed to be the case all over the country – I know, I checked! It’s great to see the boost this will give to the UK tourism, hospitality and retail industries, which have struggled so much over the last year as well as the many visitor attractions. So we’ll be having some lovely days out instead! We have so much on our doorstep to choose from! Trips to the seaside, walks in our beautiful countryside (we’ll obviously be taking the dogs!), going to The Deep (always a favourite!), visiting the Ferens Art Gallery, our museums, our great houses like Burton Constable, Burton Agnes and Sewerby Hall, going to the theatre. Actually, this makes me wonder how we’re ever going to fit it all in! And I need to do some work too! I need a plan of action for August! How exciting!
HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
With Covid restrictions easing though, I also wanted to check in with you to see how you’re feeling? I know some people are desperate to get out there, not wear face masks and forget social distancing – but I know I, for one, am not quite ready for that. Yes, I’m happy (and really want) to visit places, but I’m not ready for places that are too crowded. I will still be using my hand sanitizer, wearing my face mask and maintaining distance from others. If I’m not able to do that, I will feel uncomfortable – and that’s OK. We all have to resume activities at our own pace – so remember, keep thinking of others and, most of all, be kind! Finally, I just want to wish everyone getting results this month a massive good luck, whether it’s ‘A’ Levels, GCSEs or BTECs – it’s been such a difficult couple of years for you all and you deserve so much! Whatever you’re doing or wherever you’re going this summer, have a great time – and stay safe!
