MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR NICOLE HADDOW On a cloudy day in Dubai you can climb to the top of a handful of skyscrapers and sit above the thick mist; viewing nothing other than the very tip of those tall enough to also peak through the white puffs that separate earth from space. When you’re in a city that has the physical ability to penetrate infinity you naturally feel an insatiable desire to climb far and above any heights you have ever reached before. To travel is to challenge boundaries so it’s refreshing to spend some time in Dubai, where traditional boundaries have all but evaporated – appearing about as often as rain in the desert – the sense that anything is possible is palpable. Whether you’re visiting Dubai to shop, dine, play or simply ogle the skyline – you won’t be disappointed. We hope you enjoy this edition of Welcome to Dubai. We’re confident that we’re bringing you the definitive resource for discerning travellers. If you have any feedback about this publication I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at nicole.haddow@niche.com.au Enjoy your time in Dubai!

The Gold Souk in the Deira district is world famous and with good reason – it’s arguably the biggest bling show on earth.

DUBAI WELCOME TO

P

lummeting down the world’s tallest waterslide... bargaining for exotic spices at ancient souks... sliding over desert dunes on a four-wheel drive adventure... riding an abra (traditional wooden boat) along an Arabian creek... tearing down snow-covered slopes… exquisite shopping… worldclass dining… an entire lifetime of experiences? No, just a typical day out in Dubai. Exponential growth does not begin to describe this region’s meteoric rise as a premium tourism destination. The emirate has exploded in the past decade, fanning upwards and outwards like the second coming of Vesuvius. Instead of molten lava, Dubai has erupted with skyscrapers, islands and endless attractions, and there’s no end in sight. From the unforgiving surface of the harsh, arid desert, Dubai’s visionary ruler has created an incredible playground where travellers can enjoy virtually every experience imaginable. Critics claim the manufactured nature of Dubai’s rapid advancement as a travel destination is a spoiler, but there is no denying its unique qualities. That in itself is reason enough to visit. Cosmopolitan, diverse and safe, Dubai has plenty to offer for any curious traveller. As a luxury destination it is unsurpassed, with a simply incredible array of world-class hotels, malls, dining options and attractions. Dubai successfully blends its rich Arabian heritage with modern Western attractions. The Gold Souk in the Deira district is world famous and with good reason – it’s arguably the biggest bling show on earth. Nearby, the Spice Souk is another major attraction for discerning shoppers, along with the maze of souks offering everything from electronics to watches to fashions to very dangerous-looking food items, often skewered and occasionally wiggling. The local motto of Dubai is “Do buy, please!” but the souk vendors are generally friendly, respectful and not too pushy. The Dubai Creek splits the districts of Deira and Bur Dubai near the entrance to the Gulf. A ride down the creek on a traditional abra is a great way to familiarise yourself with the city and enjoy a classic Dubai must-do. On the Bur Dubai side of the creek, the Dubai Museum is a popular tourist attraction and the surrounding buildings offer a fantastic snapshot of Dubai’s architectural heritage. One piece of advice – do not rent a car. We stayed three days longer just because we couldn’t find our way out of Deira’s back streets! Traffic is a serious challenge, and with Dubai’s rate of construction any road map becomes obsolete in 20 minutes. There are abundant taxis plus a tourist bus that visits major hotels and attractions on an endless circuit, so unless you’re driving to Oman (like we did) there’s little reason to rent a car. © Philip Lange

DUBAI WELCOME TO

However you choose to navigate the city, no visit to Dubai will be complete without: seeing the Burj al Arab, touring the desert in a four-wheel drive, skiing or snowboarding indoors and spending an exorbitant amount on one cocktail. Dubai is the ultimate adventure playground, and an unforgettable visual experience. The emirate’s most renowned icon, the Burj al Arab, is the world’s tallest and most opulent hotel. Perched on its own platform in the Gulf, it is visible for miles and now celebrates its 10th birthday. Though taller buildings and other premium attractions are drawing increasing attention from travellers, Burj al Arab remains one of the ultimate symbols of opulence and decadent luxury (although the Atlantis hotel now gives it a run for its money). Replete with helipad and an exclusive top floor cocktail bar overlooking the Gulf, the desert and the city, the hotel will leave an indelible imprint on your travel experience with just one visit. From the exquisite indulgence of Burj al Arab to the brutal desert beyond the city’s fringe is a journey of extraordinary discovery. Professional tour companies have made the inhospitable hospitable, with modern, comfortable four-wheel drives transporting guests in convoy through the desert dunes. Those expecting a gentle sightseeing tour over flat surfaces, however, should reconsider – a desert tour in Dubai is the real deal, with vehicles slipping, sliding, plunging and climbing over the sugar-soft sand dunes. Our journey culminated in a brilliant desert sunset followed by a traditional celebration beneath the stars at a Bedouin village, with a delicious meal, a belly dancer and apple-flavoured sheesha (water pipe) for dessert.

You certainly will never go wanting in Dubai. When avid skiers discuss the world’s greatest alpine destinations, you may think names like Chamonix, Whistler and St Moritz come up a lot more often than Mall of the Emirates. Nonetheless, within this shopping complex is a self-contained, indoor ski slope with chairlift. It is certainly no St Moritz, but for novelty value Ski Dubai is a fantastic addition to any ‘Guess what I did while I was away!’ list. For shopping, dining and entertainment, the Jumeirah Beach area of Dubai offers maximum pleasure, provided you’re willing to spend a little. Madinat Jumeirah is a stunning replica of a Moroccan city, with free abras cruising the canals along a magnificently presented waterfront. For watery thrills, Wild Wadi is one of the world’s premier water fun parks, featuring the world’s tallest waterslide. The beaches along Jumeirah are a great place to unwind or enjoy a little more adventure with jet skiing, diving, sport fishing and other aquatic activities available. Whatever your pleasure, Dubai does offer something for everyone, even though some travellers experience cultural cringe with the sheer volume of manufactured entertainment and luxury. Flying in or flying out of Dubai provides an incredible snapshot of all this amazing emirate has to offer. The yet-to-be-completed Palm developments stretching out into the Gulf, the manmade archipelago that forms The World and, of course, towering above the skyline, the world’s tallest building, Burj Dubai. As our plane took off from Dubai International Airport, it seemed like hours before we eventually climbed above the height of Burj Dubai. Just one more unique vision of Dubai to add to the vast collection I’d already gathered in record time. As Dubai continues to expand at a phenomenal rate, no doubt your travel experience will reach another level again, and I hope you enjoy all that this amazing part of the world has to offer. w

ALCOHOL Alcoholic drinks are served in major hotels and clubs, but not in restaurants outside the hotels. Non-Muslim residents can buy supplies of liquor for home consumption by obtaining a permit. It is against the law to drink alcohol in public places. During Ramadan, only hotels can serve alcohol and serving cannot start until 7pm. BUSINESS HOURS The working week in Dubai runs from Saturday to Wednesday. Government offices are generally open between 8am and 2pm, opening an hour earlier during summer. Businesses and offices usually trade between 8am and 1pm, break for lunch and re-open from 3pm or 4pm until 7pm or 8pm. The Islamic weekend generally begins at noon on Thursday. Friday is recognised as a holy day when business closes down completely. Shops are open from 9am until 1pm, and from 4pm until 9pm or later. Most supermarkets remain open all day except Friday, when they close for prayers between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

CLOTHING Light clothing is suitable all year round, but a jacket may be required for cool winter nights. Many of the air-conditioned hotels and restaurants can also be quite cold, so carry a jacket out with you. During the summer months it is advisable to wear loose, comfortable, washable clothes in fabrics suitable for the hot, humid conditions. Except on beaches and around swimming pools where modern swimwear can be worn without contravening local dress codes, visitors are expected to dress conservatively in public. It is highly recommended to protect yourself with sleeved clothing, hats and sunglasses. Hotel restaurants do not insist that male guests wear ties, but most men, if not wearing a lightweight suit and tie, will at least be in smart casual attire.

FINANCES Credit cards Major credit cards are accepted at hotels and some of the larger shops. Cash is preferred by most market vendors and will usually gain visitors a better price. Currency Dirhams and fils are the units of currency with 100fils to the Dirham (Dh). The Dirham is tied to the US dollar at a steady exchange rate of US$1 = Dh3.675. Banks usually give the best rates on foreign currency exchange, but hotels and airports are often quicker and are open outside banking hours. Money changers tend to have a wider range of currencies, but their rates may be higher. DUTY FREE ALLOWANCE Two litres of spirits and two litres of wine (for non-Muslim adults only), 400 cigarettes or two kilograms of tobacco, and a reasonable amount of perfume. There are no restrictions on the amount of currency you may bring to Dubai, and no customs duty on personal effects accompanied or unaccompanied. There is a duty free store at the airport for incoming visitors which also stocks liquor.

029

COMMUNICATIONS Newspapers Two English language newspapers, the Khaleej Times and Gulf News are published daily, as well as several Arabic newspapers. Foreign newspapers, especially British, are freely available in hotel bookshops and supermarkets, albeit a day or two late. A glossy local colour magazine called What’s On reports on social and cultural events throughout the UAE. Radio Both Arabic and English commercial radio stations broadcast in Dubai. UAE Radio Dubai broadcasts in English 24 hours a day on 92 mHz FM. Telephone Telecommunications in Dubai are modern and efficient. Telephone calls within Dubai are free of charge and International Direct Dialling is available to most countries. Pay phones can be operated by coins

(Dh1 or 50 fils) or phone cards, which may be purchased from the Etisalat Company, post offices or licensed agents throughout the city. The major hotels have fax and telex services and can organise internet access. Television Arabic and English commercial television stations broadcast from mid-afternoon until late evening. Channel 33 televises a variety of programs in English. Some are locally produced, but most originate from the UK, the US and Australia.

ELECTRICITY The electricity supply is 220/240 volts AC at 50 cycles. EMBASSIES Most diplomatic missions are located in the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi. There are, however, some consulates and commercial attachés in Dubai.

MEDICAL CARE There are several well-equipped, modern hospitals, including the New Dubai Hospital, which is regarded as one of the best medical centres in the Middle East. Most hotels have their own doctor on 24-hour call and pharmacies carry most common medicines and health products.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS As the dates of Islamic holidays are not fixed, it is best to ask a local or consult the daily newspapers for information. There are some fixed non-Muslim holidays such as New Year’s Day on 1 January, the holiday to mark the Accession of HH Sheikh Zayed on 6 August and National Day on 2 December. Christmas is often observed by Western companies and some diplomatic missions may observe Easter. Ramadan This is a month of fasting when Muslims abstain from eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours. Non-Muslims should observe these religious customs when in public view. During Ramadan, working hours are reduced. Business is sometimes conducted after dark. The end of Ramadan is marked by ceremonial cannon shots, followed by joyous feasting and dancing over the three-day Eid Al-Fitr holiday. The dates of Ramadan change every year.

PHOTOGRAPHY Dubai is popular with photographers worldwide for its diverse scenery. Photographers must note, however, that certain restrictions are enforced. It is forbidden to photograph Muslim women and military

RELIGION Islam is the official religion, but other creeds are tolerated. Every Muslim has a duty to pray five times a day, with the precise times published daily.

LANGUAGE The official language is Arabic, but English is widely understood in hotels and shops, and used as a second language in commerce. Because of the cosmopolitan expatriate population of Dubai, many languages are spoken, particularly Urdu, Hindi and Farsi.

TRANSPORTATION Driving licences A temporary local driving licence is issued when you hire a self-drive vehicle, if you can produce a valid passport, two photographs, and an international driving licence. A national licence from any of the following countries is acceptable in place of an international licence: Germany, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Greece, Turkey, UK, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Taxis Taxis are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. They are easily obtainable in Dubai. The Dubai Transport Corporation’s ivory coloured cabs are fitted with fare meters. In the case of all other taxis, fares are subject to negotiation between driver and passenger. Taxis operate a very cheap service rate, Dh10 for pick-up, followed by Dh1.7 per kilometre. For longer journeys, an hourly rate of about Dh30 is reasonable, and for a day the price is negotiable upwards of about Dh500. Dubai Taxi also offers SMS and online booking services. You can text 4774 or visit www.dubaitaxi.ae to take advantage of these services.

TIPPING Tipping practices in Dubai are comparable to most places throughout the rest of the world. Even where a service charge is applied, staff expect a little extra. Ten percent is acceptable in hotel restaurants; for luggage porters at airports a tip of Dh5 or Dh10 is standard, depending on the amount of luggage. VISAS Most visitors are eligible to enter the UAE on either a 30-day tourist visa or a visit visa for up to 60 days. Citizens of the UK (or those who hold right of abode), France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Finland, Spain, Monaco, Vatican City, Iceland, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and holders of Hong Kong SAR passports are granted free of charge one-time entry visit visas on arrival. Those travelling on Israeli passports are not allowed entry. WATER Tap water comes from desalination plants and is safe to drink; however, many people prefer the bottled water served in most hotels and restaurants. w

TIME The UAE time is four hours ahead of UCT (Universal Coordinated Time – formerly Greenwich Mean Time). There are no special summer daylight savings times.

From the plateaus of the desert to the cloud-capped towers, Dubai certainly offers extreme highs and peaceful lows. However, the real essence of Dubai is found somewhere in between – in the people, the culture and way of life. This is the essence of Dubai…

came to control the trade routes to India. All the while, the pearling industry was on the rise and Abu Dubai, later the capital of the UAE, was constantly growing as a port. Dubai’s luck took a turn for the worse, when during the 1800s it suffered two major catastrophic events. To begin with an outbreak of smallpox in the Bur Dubai area forced residents to relocate to Deira in the east, which then suffered a major fire in 1894. Despite these two unfortunate events, Dubai was still a bustling port city, with its constant pearling and lowered taxes to encourage consistent trading. With its pearl industry remaining the backbone of Dubai’s economic life for so long, it took a blow to the gut during the 20th century when it suffered greatly during World War I and the subsequent depression. The industry all but died out after World War II, after the Indian

ubai. A city that moves so fast it is constantly evolving before our eyes. Just think, more than 40 years ago this sandbox in the middle of the desert was holding on by a thread to stay above water economically. Now, it is one of the richest countries in the world. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, however, Dubai and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were on the map long before Dubai started producing manmade islands and seven-star hotels. Human occupation of the UAE dates as far back as 5500 BCE; and evidence of communication with other tribes and areas from this period has been discovered. The Portuguese arrived in the Gulf area in the 1500s and briefly defeated the local Arabs. They were followed by the British, who

reaching a total cost of US$12.3 billion. But this is old news! Now, as ‘strive for bigger and better’ rules the building industry, construction companies spare no expense when it comes to designing these lavish and flamboyant superstructures. The Atlantis Hotel is situated atop a palm tree-shaped island. The 130-acre resort vaunts 1539 rooms and its own private aquarium holding 65,000 sea creatures, which can be viewed from inside the hotel’s signature suites. Its character balances exquisite traditional Arabian architecture with uncluttered, exotic décor. This mega development cost £1 billion to construct, and £13.5 million was spent on the grand opening party, which hosted more than 2000 guests – among them rich and famous A-list celebrities such as Robert De Niro.

government raised taxes on purchases, and the people of Dubai had to look elsewhere for revenue. This is where luck turned in their favour. Oil... one of the world’s most lucrative industries. In 1966 oil was found in Dubai, radically changing the now sparkling city and prompting its population to multiply 300 percent over the next 20 years. Dubai experienced a major construction boom, boasting two major shipping ports – Jebel Ali and Port Rashid – and the 39-storey Dubai World Trade Centre, which arguably began the fascination with tall, extravagant buildings that influences the Arabian character today. So just how quickly is Dubai developing? Well, between the years 2000 and 2008, the Nakheel Company (one of the world’s largest property developers) created and built a set of three manmade islands off the Persian Gulf coastline, designed to depict palm trees and

A 1800-seat theatre nearby will house a permanent Cirque du Soleil show beginning in the summer of 2011 and, by 2010, Dubai aims to attract a staggering 10 million hotel visitors annually. If you thought this lavish lifestyle was prestige enough – for all you designer label lovers out there – a number of fashion houses are behind Dubai’s real estate industry. Versace, Chanel and even Armani are involved in teaming up to design these illustrious constructions. The world’s first refrigerated beach will be built next to the luxurious Palazzo Versace hotel. Yes, you read correctly. Dubai’s newest hotel in the making is two years away from opening and its developers are considering a bizarre ploy to attract more guests – an artificially cooled beach for those scorching hot days. The beach is to be part of the $609 million, 12-storey luxury hotel and residence complex, designed by the Milan-based fashion house. Developers say it will be finished in 2010. Just when you thought they had run out of ideas! This ever-growing, well-established and affluent city on the water encapsulates every bit of the word ‘wealth’. With its high-end fashion, overwhelming architecture, a booming theatre and arts scene and numerous upscale clubs, you can’t help salivating at the thought of such a scrumptious lifestyle. Tourism in Dubai looks set to keep increasing. Its love affair with new and improved infrastructure is ongoing, which keeps this city ploughing ahead into the future. Watch out world... w

magine the impossible. That’s what Dubai does every day as the skyline swiftly morphs into a veritable feast of outlandish design. This design is not just restricted to the mainland. ‘The World’ is one development that is almost out of this world. Considered to be ‘an engineering odyssey’, this startling development is made up of 300 manmade islands in the shape of the world’s continents. Each island is for sale; however, you have to be invited to purchase one. Within The World there are many islands dedicated to specific industries. For example Isla Moda is a fashion oasis dedicated to luxury retailers, designer homes and designer lifestyles. Developers have been careful to ensure that The World exists in harmony with the resident marine life by using an effective water treatment and recycling system. The world will cater to both commercial and private residential markets and will, without question, be a world unlike anything else on earth. If you think that’s phenomenal turn your mind to the Dynamic Tower. Each level rotates, so that the shape is constantly transforming, while the view from the inside is constantly changing. Dr David Fisher, creator of the tower says, “Today’s life is dynamic, so the space we are living in should be dynamic as well, adjustable to our needs that change continuously.” Not only is this new design an extreme visual and technological achievement, the tower will also be made completely of prefabricated parts, which makes the constructions relatively simple. It is also environmentally friendly. The anticipated completion date is 2010. It seems that anything that you can dream up in Dubai can become a reality. Some speculative architectural ideas include The Cloud – a dreamlike design that seems to defy logic. Construction of the cloud is yet to take place, but if you’d love to reside in something that looks more like a floating optical illusion than a piece of modern architecture, keep an eye out for this one. The Burj Dubai was completed in 2008 and is now the world’s tallest skyscraper. It stands at 818 metres. Although, there are plans to build a skyscraper as tall as one kilometre. Many factors were considered in the engineering process such as the design requirements to accommodate wind issues. The Burj is home to both retail and residential tenants and is considered to be one of the most masterful constructions in the world to date.

Architecture is even permeating the entertainment sector. Dubailand is Dubai’s resident amusement and theme park and it makes Disneyland look about as exciting as a rusty swing. Dubailand is not just an amusement park; it also includes Dubai Sport City (an architecturally impressive sporting stadium), an observation wheel, golfing, equestrian and polo facilities, and many miniature villages. It seems unthinkable then, to contrast these structures with the beautiful mosques that pale somewhat in comparison with this extreme modern skyline. Yet the mosques are beautiful in their own right. The heritage architecture provides the perfect equilibrium that is required. Islamic architecture presents an artful reminder of the way that Dubai was before. For a view of life in Dubai before oil, explore the Jumeirah Mosque. The intricate details both internally and externally highlight that Dubai’s dedication to unique architecture existed long before concrete and steel ruled the skyline. The Grand Mosque is not only architecturally significant, it is also a hub of traditional religious activity and gives insight into the humbler way of life that continues in the UAE despite the extravagant modern growth. The Bastakia Quarter is another example of the subtle, sandy times in Dubai. Galleries and cultural centres give an all-encompassing sense of life here when Arabic coffee and bustling souks were the order of the day. Even if you have no interest in architecture in Dubai, you’ll have it imposed on you. The stark contrasts make Dubai the city that it is; it is the reason that many visitors consider Dubai a must-see destination. Nothing is built here without the intention of being the biggest and the best, and life and culture occur within the walls of some of the greatest architecture of the 21st century. Hotels, shopping malls and even the airport are all architectural sights in themselves. w

CULTURE It’s hard to pinpoint any one form of culture in Dubai. When we think about culture we are usually highlighting common characteristics within a society. When, however, outrageous architecture is morphing out of the sand next to women in traditional dress drinking Arabic coffee out of little metal pots, it’s hard to fathom how juxtaposition like this creates a livable culture. Arguably, the Islamic principles by which the people of Dubai live ensure a simple harmony is maintained despite the dramatic development of the city. Men and women still stroll the streets in traditional and conservative dress. Men wear the white robe known as the dishdasha, while women wear the black abbaya, which cover them from head to toe. Signs of wealth and opulence can be found in garments underneath and there are glimpses of extravagant jewellery under sleeves. Men of great wealth may also swathe themselves in gold cloaks to differentiate themselves. By contrast, the modern development of the city simply cannot be ignored, and has made a significant impact on the culture of this diverse destination.

The Abraaj Capital Art Prize was established in 2008 to create an international platform for artists from the Menasa (Middle East, North Africa, South Asia) region. Fashion IN DUBAI

Fashion in Dubai is all about premium design. International designers reign supreme, but local talent is competing for the catwalk too. Nicole Haddow talks to many emerging Dubai designers about what makes Dubai style unique…

ubai is a fashion oasis. Literally. Where else in the world can you find an island dedicated to the gods of garment construction? Karl Lagerfeld is participating in the Isla Moda (Fashion Island) development. Meanwhile, on the mainland, fashion retailers are popping up faster than you can say haute couture… While the A to Z of fashion houses can be found in Dubai, there are also a number of emerging designers that are challenging the international names for a position under the spotlight. Deeya Nanda has arguably forged Dubai’s most exciting fashion career to date. Nanda began her career as a student at the prestigious Central St Martins in London and then added to her knowledge with a stint at the London College of Fashion. It was here that she was shortlisted to work with Yves Saint Laurent and won the position. “I worked with Yves Saint Laurent as a designer for their menswear division; I designed ranges from formalwear to swimwear and underwear,” she explains. So where does a talented designer go once she has worked with the distinguished YSL? “My experience over the years gave me the confidence to start my own label and to encourage individuality in a market that is brand driven and money minded,” she says. It’s not easy to compete in a market where names such as Fendi, Missoni and Gucci dominate. Even iconic names such as Ralph Lauren are

DUBAI FASHION DESIGNERS TALK ABOUT HOW THEY SPEND A PERFECT DAY IN DUBAI ARSHIA KHAN When I am not working I would prefer to spend a beautiful evening out with family and close friends and relax or unwind in one of Dubai’s finest restaurants or shop around in any of Dubai’s fabulous malls that have a lot to offer. WAFA SAIFI I’d wake up and lounge around by the backyard pool and take in some sun, then head over to ‘the marina walk’ for a nice leisurely brunch with friends at one of the water facing restaurants. Then I’d head to the Mall of the Emirates for some coffee and a quick round of retail therapy at Harvey Nichols. SURBHI JAGGI A perfect day would include shopping at MOE, a quick stop at Tips and Toes for the essential mani-pedi and massage, catching up with friends over sheesha (hookah or water pipe) and drinks at Barasti, a good diary entry and curling up with my read of the moment. DEEYA NANDA The perfect day would be playing with my dogs in the garden on a nice sunny day.

creating collections inspired by ‘urban desert luxe’; collections that capture the romance and spirit of adventure that naturally appeal to the UAE audience. Nanda agrees that is it difficult to compete against such revered industry names, saying her debut show at Dubai Fashion Week was her first real test as an independent designer. “I was sceptical about how it would be received as my approach to fashion was very different to the rest of the designers. My debut collection was titled ‘Malice in Wonderland’. I wanted to give it a dark twist creating a dark fairytale for the adults, yet keeping a childhood quality.” What was the outcome? A standing ovation – and a Dubai fashion star was born. The UAE is a powerful fashion destination thanks to the contrast between traditional dress options, and the extravagant alternatives. Wafa Saifi, another successful designer in Dubai, says inspiration is everywhere, and that’s why Dubai design is beginning to stand out. She explains, “The Middle East has an identity of its own, which is quite mysterious. Dubai has been very successful in retaining a sense of mystery and still manages to be a very cosmopolitan city.” What’s the most powerful inspiration in this city? “It is an amalgamation of different cultures. My designs are influenced by the myriad cultures and people that I am surrounded by.”

Saifi acknowledges the fact that for the people of Dubai, fashion has shifted away from the conservative. “People in Dubai are very fashion forward,” she says. “They have become more experimental with what they buy. Established design houses have always done well here, but now people have become open to trying out newer designers in an effort to create their own personal style.” Designer Arshia Khan agrees that Dubai is a progressive city and says that supporting events such as the Swarovski Arabian Creation Awards give UAE designers the recognition they need to stand out. Khan was a winner at this event. “It came as a pleasant surprise when I won the ‘Swarovski Arabian Creation 2008 – Most Innovative Design Award’,” she says. In addition, Dubai Fashion Week ensures Dubai remains recognised on an international scale. Khan says of the 2008 event, “Dubai Fashion Week attracted a large crowd and it was definitely a very rewarding and thrilling experience, as I showed my collection of 12 pieces. The whole event was witnessed by fashion industry leaders, designers, socialites, buyers, media and other key stakeholders.” What does the future hold for Khan? “My next collection that I will be launching in 2009 will consist of high-end couture pieces incorporating draped techniques in silks and embellishing them with original Swarovski crystals and pearls,” she says. Some designers aren’t forgetting the heritage of Dubai and that natural and traditional fabrics are calling out to be whipped into a modern construction. Designer Surbhi Jaggi says, “Hailing from a country that has such a rich textile heritage, it would be unfair to limit myself to a particular kind. My graduating collection was an innovative combination of origami with Benarasi brocades.” True to her word, she has moved from heavy brocades to lighter fabrics. “My Spring/Summer ’09 collection is completely different, with an emphasis on silk chiffons.” The sheer size of the fashion industry means fashion in Dubai requires full-time dedication; no one ever said fashion was easy. Although stores such as Boutique 1 make it easier by exclusively stocking striking pieces by international designers including Lebanese couturier Elie Saab. Saab’s most notable creation was worn by Halle Berry when she won an Academy Award. When one is shopping in a destination with brands by the who’s who of fashion and ‘a private paradise of style’ in the form of Isla Moda, a passion for fashion is will come naturally. w

and the goods are tax free – to the point where some Dubai diamonds are up to 60 percent cheaper than their European or North American counterparts. Finding the perfect diamond can be a once in a lifetime affair, as these gems are as unique as they are rare. The perfect choice will come down to personal taste, but also a combination of the four ‘Cs’ – carat, colour, clarity and cut. The ‘carat’ is the weight in which the diamond is measured: one carat equates to one fifth of a gram. Carats are divided into 100 points, so a 10-point diamond weighs 1/10 of a carat. Generally the higher the carat, the higher the price tag. Diamonds span a spectrum of colours including blue, pink and even black, which are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). There are also ‘fancy colour’ diamonds, which have a high saturation of

colour and are extremely difficult to come by and thus highly sought after and expensive. The ‘clarity’ of a diamond refers to its internal and external characteristics, which basically comes down to whether or not the stone has any flaws. Flawless stones are graded as ‘FL’, whereas, at the other end of the scale, imperfect stones (that have inclusions that can be seen with the naked eye) are labelled ‘I’. The ‘cut’ of a diamond is created by the angles and proportions at which the diamond has been sculpted, as well as its symmetry and polish. A well-cut diamond will seem to be illuminated from within because of skilfully cut angles that reflect the light off one another; conversely, if the diamond has not been cut well, the light inside of it will tend to escape through the sides or bottom, thus not appearing as brilliant.

pearls on the market today are cultured in pearl farms. This does not, however, make them any less spectacular. Pearls of the region are said to be some of the best natural pearls in the world. The warm and shallow waters from which they come give many of them a prized golden hue. The value of a pearl is determined by a combination of factors, including size, colour, lustre, shape and surface quality. Pearls are weighed in carats and measured in millimetres; if a pearl is considered desirable in its other qualities, the bigger the pearl the more valuable it is likely to be. Symmetry is also valued in a pearl and the most common and valuable shapes are spherical, but tear- and pearshaped are also highly sought after. Baroque pearls, which are irregular in shape, can fetch a high price if they have alluring lustre and size.

071

PEARLS Before the discovery of oil in the region in 1966, the culture and economy of Dubai was based on the harvesting of pearls. The gem has a long association with the area – archaeologists have even found the remains of a threaded pearl dated 7000 years ago and, according to Arabic legend, they were formed when oysters ventured from the ocean to swallow moonlight dewdrops. We know today, however, that a pearl is created when a mollusc or oyster tries to dispel a foreign object from within its shell by coating it with minute and concentrated layers of calcium carbonate in crystalline form – years of layering resulting in a beautiful object. Naturally, pearls occur in about one of every 10,000 oysters, making them a very rare commodity. Hence the reason that most

GOLD Dubai is often referred to as ‘the City of Gold’ because of the prevalence of this precious metal in the markets, malls and high-end stores throughout the city. In fact, there are more than 25 tonnes of the stuff on display in jewellery shop windows at any one time. Gold is big business here – the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group fixes the rate of gold twice a day in accordance with international gold rates and any gold sold in Dubai by law must have a gold purity hallmark. Carats are used to measure the purity of the gold, with 24 carats being the purest form. The problem with pure gold is that it is quite malleable and easy to scratch and misshape. To strengthen the gold, it is often mixed with alloys – the combination of which lessens the carat rating, but also affects the colour of the gold (depending on the metal used), with white, yellow and pink tinges being popular outcomes. w

DUBAI ESSENCE OF

The ‘lustre’ of a pearl refers to its sheen – the higher the lustre; the shinier and more mirror-like it will be. A low lustre pearl will appear matt and chalky and thus be less desirable. The surface quality of a pearl refers to its flaws – a pearl with flaws will be generally lower in value. Coloured pearls (as opposed to those that are plain white) are the most highly prized, particularly those with silver, pink or gold tints.

Shapes and movements by Cartier, a creator of finewatchmaking marvels. In 2008, Cartier introduced the Ballon Bleu Flying Tourbillon, featuring mechanical movement which earned the prestigious and much sought after Geneva Seal Hallmark, joining the selective group of watch manufactures certified to display the Geneva Seal. Cartier’s master craftsmen have developed and crafted the calibre 9452 MC* that now bears this greatly coveted certification. 2009 marked a new chapter in Cartier’s history, demonstrating the House’s art of fine craftsmanship and savoir-faire, which put Cartier on a pedestal in the art of fine watchmaking. Cartier has developed its own in-house watch movements reflecting the intense and ambitious research into mechanisms.

This exclusive collection of ten timepieces features striking silhouettes, inventive designs, spectacular volumes and Cartier-made movements. Some bear the prestigious Geneva Seal, which elevates great Cartier classics – from the Tank Américaine to the Santos 100 – to the rank of authentic examples of fine watchmaking.

BASTAKIA QUARTER

The Bastakia Quarter in Bur Dubai is one of the city’s most picturesque heritage sites. It was built in the late 19th century by Persian merchants attracted to the city by its relaxed trade tariffs. The area has been declared a conservation area and, while some buildings are private homes, many are open to the public. CAMEL RACING

A trip to the camel races, which take place on Thursday and Fridays from October to April, can be one of the most memorable highlights of any visit to Dubai. Located on the fringe of the city, the races at the Al Wathba Camel Track are vigorous and exciting.

DUBAI CREEK Creek Cruises

Dubai Creek offers a picturesque glimpse of Dubai’s trading heritage. You can choose to sail or take a traditional abra (water taxi) for a one- or two-hour cruise, or tour operators offer both day or night cruises. DUBAI MUSEUM Al Fahidi Fort, Al Fahidi Street, Bur Dubai

The Al Fahidi Fort, which houses the Dubai Museum, was built around 1799 and has served as palace, garrison and prison, but was renovated in 1970 for use as a museum. Colourful dioramas depict Dubai’s history, while artefacts dating back more than 3000 years provide visitors with a taste of ancient civilisations.

DESERT SAFARIS

085

DUBAI EXPERIENCE DUBAI

No visit to Dubai would be complete without a trip into the desert. Such excursions are best organised as part of a group tour, but offer a taste of the true heartland of Arabia. The majesty and tranquillity of the desert can be experienced in a choice of exciting half-day, full-day and overnight safaris, and those with a taste for speed can try sand skiing down the dunes of the Dubai desert.

hopping in Dubai could never be described as merely a means to an end. Known for innovation on and off the shop floor, it has become somewhat of a ‘choose you own adventure’ experience to remember. And remember you will; only the Emiratis would think to juxtapose cutting edge fashion with the literal cutting edge of shark-feeding sessions. Likewise travelling back in time at the souks, or entering the draw to become a ‘Millennium Millionaire’. Shops are open a languid 10am to 10pm, except for Fridays when they open in the afternoon, and when the annual Dubai Shopping Festival occurs in January and February shopping hours vary.

Does the idea of shopping in Dubai challenge your wildest imagination? Well, all I can say is: ‘Dorothy, we’re not in Kansas anymore’. Dubai shopping has to be seen to be believed, so click those heels together and let’s be off… SHOPPING BAG ONE: BurJuman Centre

Just as Dubai is a key player in the worlds of architecture, business and finance, the BurJuman Centre demonstrates that Emiratis also like to lead the field when it comes to fashion. With a store directory that reads like the backstage roll call at any international

fashion week, it’s first in, best dressed, with high-flying fashion for high-flying shoppers. Brands include Hermès, Burberry, Emmanuel Ungaro, Escada, Calvin Klein, Diesel, Valentino, Just Cavalli and Christian Dior. Continue the luxury shopping experience with fine Parisian jewellery at Van Cleef and Arpels, and lingerie at La Perla. If you have any change left in your pocket, you can almost always find something extra at fast fashion favourites such as Zara, Massimo Dutti and Mango. As you would expect the BurJuman Centre also provides the ultimate in comfort and luxury with beautiful sunlit courtyard atriums to rewind and recharge. www.burjuman.com

Dubai’s rapidly growing skylines and love affair with the shopping mall help create social hubs to escape the desert heat. One such stop is Dubai Festival City, a picturesque three-kilometre waterfront experience, with restaurants, bowling and cinema complexes, residential areas and schools. The tagline for Festival Centre is ‘live a more colourful life’, and with over 600 brands including Caroline Herrera, Ed Hardy, Karen Millen and Marc Jacobs, one can only imagine you will.

SHOPPING BAG FIVE: Deira Gold and Spice Souks

The Dubai Outlet Mall is the Middle East’s first concept outlet shopping centre and, with its selection of more than 800 premium brands at 30 to 90 percent off original prices and the mantra ‘passion for fashion, cravings for savings’, it appears to be the A to Z of adrenaline inducing shopping. Repeat after me now: A is for Alessandro Dell’Acqua and Alaia, B is for Banana Republic and Bulgari, C is for Chanel and CK Jeans…

Dubai is known as the Land of Gold, and in Deira Gold Souk there are over 275 gold outlets alone. Whatever your heart may desire, be it traditional, modern or cutting edge, you should be able to find it at the Gold Souk – if not, you can always have it made especially. Take a scented walk through Deira Spice Souk, where they sell aromatic spices, herbs, pulses, dried fruits and chillies – pick up some frankincense used by Emirates residents to perfume guests’ garments at parties. It’s handily packaged with an incense burner and coal. Souk Al Bahar (meaning ‘Market of the Sailor’) derives its name from its traditional Souk-style architecture featuring natural stone corridors, high archways and subdued lighting and its unique ‘waterfront’ location on Burj Dubai Lake.

www.dubaioutletmall.com

Perhaps the best thing about shopping in Dubai is the lack of bored men waiting outside fitting room doors. Still not convinced? Well, take him on a trip to the Mall of the Emirates – Dubai’s first ‘shopping resort’. Should anyone tire of the range of stores from Harvey Nichols to Missoni, they could just hit the slopes. That’s right, the Mall of the Emirates has its very own real snow indoor ski resort. Other members of your entourage will be well-entertained at luxury cinema Cinestar or indoor amusement park Magic Planet. www.malloftheemirates.com

Dubai has become known for its experiential shopping experiences and the Dubai Mall is no exception. Despite its 300 retail and speciality stores from Chanel to Galeries Lafayette, one could easily be distracted from the main event by tempting sideshows such as shark-feeding sessions at the Dubai Aquarium, the ‘kid-sized’ replica city KidZania, an indoor theme park (Sega Republic) and an ice-skating rink. GOLF

Golf is undoubtedly the premier sport of Dubai. With world-class golf courses – some of which have been designed by champions of the sport such as Greg Norman and Tiger Woods – and the Desert Classic Golf Championship, Dubai has quickly become one of the world’s leading golf destinations. Despite the arid desert climate, the courses are lush and green and are largely modelled on US golf courses, with luxurious clubhouses, fi ne restaurants and the convenience of buggies to travel from hole to hole. In summer, when temperatures can soar above 50 degrees Celsius during the day, some courses switch on the floodlights after dark and offer night golfing, remaining open until midnight when the heat is a more bearable 30 degrees Celsius. Golf courses are also great places to see plants native to the UAE, as most clubs make an effort to populate the greens with native fauna. For example, at the Arabian Ranches club, which is often referred to as the ‘desert course’, there is no landscaping. Instead, this course follows the natural desert terrain and shows off some fine examples of native scrub. The course is so large that the golf buggies are fitted with GPS. The host of the Desert Classic tournament is the Emirates Golf Club, known both for its clubhouse modelled on traditional Bedouin tents and its unique Wadi course, shaped like the rocky river beds that occur naturally in the UAE. Another of Dubai’s world-class courses is the Montgomerie Golf Club, a links-style course. The 13th hole of this course is the largest single green in the world.

Other sports to try on the sand dunes are sandboarding, sand-skiing, four-wheeling and wadi-bashing. Sand boarding and skiing literally involve strapping on a board or skis and hurtling down the dunes as though they were ski slopes. Similar to dune bashing, wadibashing is another of Dubai’s unique desert sports. A wadi is a dry, rocky riverbed. With a professional driver in tow, you can drive along the riverbed, through valleys carved out by flood waters. If not for any other exciting reason, these desert sports are worth a try for the unique scenery alone.

If it wasn’t for the heat, it might be easy to forget that luscious Dubai is built on a desert. If you drive just 45 minutes from the city centre, you can discover the adrenalin rush of Arabian desert sporting adventures. Dune bashing is a popular activity, which involves driving up sand dunes in four-wheel-drives and descending at high speeds down the slopes at stomachchurning angles close to 90 degrees. It sounds dangerous, but the drivers are professionally qualified and highly-skilled. Such excursions are usually part of a desert tour package and include a visit to a mock Bedouin campsite where visitors can smoke from shisha

Dubai provides the perfect environment for water sports: warm weather all year round, minimal rainfall and beautiful beaches with white sand and clear blue water. A 25-minute drive from the city centre, Jumeirah Beach is generally considered the best beach in Dubai and is also the location of seven-star resort Burj al Arab. With plenty of sport equipment for hire, Dubai is an ideal place for water-skiing, jet-skiing, wakeboarding and swimming. Diving is also popular, with water depth ranging between five and 30 metres and exotic fish, colourful reef and even some shipwrecks to explore. There are several diving clubs around Dubai that hire out equipment and conduct diving lessons. If you feel like trying your hand at sailing, you’re in luck, because sailing conditions in Dubai are ideal; winds are usually calm and there are plenty of places to hire yachts and sail boats. Other options include game fishing, wind-surfing or simply soaking up the warm weather. w

WATER SPORTS

Horse-racing in Dubai is gaining popularity, particularly due to the Dubai World Cup, held at the Nad al Sheba racecourse. Known as the world’s richest horse race; the 2008 event’s total prize money was more than US$21 million. The most famous race, the Dubai World Cup itself, sponsored by Emirates Airline, is worth more than US$6 million alone. As with horse-racing around the globe, the Dubai World Cup is not just about the horses, it is also a major fashion event with a hotly contested ‘Fashions on the Field’ competition. The Cup’s 2008 BurJuman Style Stakes saw a record-breaking number of fashionistas, with the International Village selling out four days before the event – the earliest ever that has happened. Racing, however, doesn’t stop at the Cup – you can also enjoy the action of the Winter Racing Challenge and the Dubai International Racing Carnival. For details on how to enjoy the highlight of the entire racing and social calendar visit www.dubaiworldcup.com or www.dubairacingclub.com.

Only a two-hour drive from Dubai, Abu Dhabi is the second largest Emirate and home to the capital city, also named Abu Dhabi. With all of its modern luxuries and traditional Middle Eastern charm it is a perfect place to discover what the UAE is all about. Like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a place marked by contrasts. One can make shopping forays into vast atmospheric souks, visit modern luxury malls, the beautiful Corniche gardens, or simply stroll the streets taking in the contrasting sights of old and new. The construction of Saadiyat Island promises some of the most exciting developments such as a new branch for the Louvre, which is scheduled to open in 2012. A branch of the Guggenheim is also planned. Yas Island, to the city’s east is the home of Abu Dhabi’s

A visit to this lovely city, the scenery of which is enhanced by the beautiful Omani Mountains, is a must. Al Ain is also home to the camel market, the last of its kind in the UAE, and one that attracts customers and dealers from all over the Emirates and Oman. SHARJAH

The town of Sharjah, a 30-minute drive from Dubai, is steeped in a long and rich seafaring history. Sharjah was the most important port in the lower Arabian Gulf until the bulk of sea trade shifted to Dubai at the beginning of the 20th century. It was home to the Qawasim sea-

for ‘water-babies’, with sports like swimming, yachting, surfing and deep-sea fishing being the key sources of distraction in this mountainous Emirate. Notably, there are no sand dunes in this part of the world – water runs off the mountains irrigating the fertile farmland below. Fujairah has excellent commercial port facilities and, because it is outside the Strait of Hormuz, it is of strategic importance as a safe haven for oil tankers and cargo vessels in times of war. AJMAN

Hemmed in between Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain on the Arabian Gulf is Ajman, the smallest Emirate in the UAE, which is rapidly becoming a centre for small entrepreneurial business ventures. With an eye for attracting holidaymakers, the Emirate has plans to develop offshore Safia Island into a coastal tourist resort. In the meantime, visitors can enjoy learning about traditional local crafts – particularly dhow (ship) building – and appreciate the artistry involved in converting gold bars into Bedouin jewellery. History buffs will enthuse over the Mowaihat archaeological site where a circular Umm-Al-Nar type

The northernmost Emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, is dense with history and breathtaking scenery. This ancient seaport and its several archaeological sites yield fascinating material for the historian. There is also the opportunity to witness Ali Baba-style pots being made and decorated in traditional style at a pottery near Shimal, a few kilometres north of Ras Al Khaimah city. The landscape has much to offer the adventurous traveller – beaches, forests, fertile farmlands and red-duned desert rolling up to rugged mountains and thermal springs. The Bedouins on its borders place camel racing high on the social calendar, and the variety of fruits and vegetables grown here are also a main point of interest. w

tomb was discovered, the first sign of Umm-Al-Nar occupation in the northern Emirates. Here, numerous soft-stone and painted ceramic vessels were unearthed, as well as a number of other cultural artefacts such as copper utensils and beads, all of which are on display at the Ajman Museum.
