INTERVIEW WITH SOUTH AFRICAN TOURISM ACEO
STHEMBISO DLAMINI As the ACEO of South African Tourism, you no doubt do a lot of travelling, especially for business. What important considerations do you have when travelling for business? I always make sure that I have a well-thought-out itinerary, so that I spend my time productively and get the full business and leisure value out of my trip. But, at the same time, it’s very important not to pack my schedule. A little flexibility gives me the freedom to relax and enjoy the experience as well as visit places recommended to me by locals, clients or colleagues. And, of course, you need that little extra time for when business takes over leisure time! When it comes to packing, I’m a seasoned pro by now! I just try to keep it simple and light, packing versatile clothes as well as enough season-specific clothes to make sure hot or cold days are as comfortable as possible. Also, I never forget to pack a good pair of sneakers or my most comfortable walking shoes for those days of exploring, and a pair of swim shorts if I manage to squeeze in a swim. Tell us about some of your favourite South African business destinations, if that concept even exists? Why do these destinations stand out?
43341_4_WT South Africa_Book Folder.indd 12
Durban and Cape Town are both great, each for their own reasons, with beautiful beaches and some of my favourite restaurants in the country.
the country with amazing views and nature as well as more than enough quiet spots that feel a million miles away from everyday stress.
But I really love the buzz and cosmopolitan nature of a world-class city like Johannesburg. Moving around is a breeze, and there are more restaurants and entertainment options than you could possibly count. I always feel like it’s the centre of activity in South Africa, swarming with international and local businesspeople, so it has a brilliant energy for business, to go with the best hotels and infrastructure to make it happen.
South Africa is breathtakingly beautiful and boasts a range of really exciting locations and experiences. However, we need you to narrow it down to your all-time favourite holiday spot in South Africa. Do tell?
What do you never leave home without when travelling for business and leisure? The most important thing for me is staying connected during my trip, so I never leave home without my tablet, my cellphone and the necessary plugs and adapters needed to keep me charged. I love to read too, so I am never without a good book or two to pass time at the airport, on the plane or winding down at the hotel.
Limpopo is not only my hometown but one of my favourite places to travel to. I simply can’t get enough of the landscape – the hills, waterfalls and rivers, forests, mystical baobab trees and incredible wildlife, and that smell of nature that comes with all of it. I’m also inspired by the history and cultural heritage of the place, and feel like I learn something new every time I go back. And, finally the people are just the best! Some of my favourite Limpopo sights include: Haenertsburg, the world’s largest baobab tree at Sunland, the ancient cycads at Modjadji Village, the ruins of Mapungubwe, the Kruger National Park, Thathe Vondo Forest and Lake Funduzi – just to mention a few.
When and where was your last Sho’t Left? Tell us a bit about it? My husband and I recently took a short break to Mpumalanga for much needed rest. It’s an unbelievable part of

MESSAGE FROM CROSS CULTURE PROMOTIONS
COLETTE ROBERTS Welcome to South Africa, a truly awe-inspiring country! With so much to offer, from pristine beaches to mountain retreats, the winelands to game reserves, bustling cities or quaint little towns between; whether you are new to our sunny shores, a seasoned visitor or a local, there’s no shortage of sights and experiences here to make you say “WOW!” For me, an area that has always captured my imagination is the beautiful Cape, and the famous Garden Route, which stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. Last year, during our spring/summer months, my husband and I decided to do a family holiday and take the kids on a road trip along this amazing route. Starting our trip, we left Joburg and headed for Colesberg, a popular ‘halfway’ stop over, where we spent our first night in a lovely tented camp overlooking the Orange River. Early the next morning, we continued our drive to Knysna, cruising along the Outeniqua Pass, with views so stunning we were almost forced to pull over every few minutes to grab some of our first holiday pics. We went past Oudtshoorn, the ‘ostrich capital of the world’, and also the well-known hiding place of the miraculous Cango Caves. Then, through to George – one of the main entertainment hubs along the Garden Route. By the way, George is more than a worthwhile stop for a day or even a week! Reaching the friendly harbour town of Knysna, we decided to take a break from the road for a couple of days. Our base was a lovely self-catering apartment, just a short walk from the Knysna Waterfront and overlooking the popular Knysna Lagoon. We stopped in at Caffe Mario, where we pigged out ( just a little) on top-class pizza, with a couple of glasses of wine, as we watched the boats come and go. While in Knysna, we absolutely had to visit the Knysna Elephant Park, which was quite surreal, and one of my favourite memories of the trip. We also found time to visit the Goldfield State Forest, and did their easy 3.1km ‘Circles in the Forest’ walking trail, which was just too pretty for words! From there we headed to Hermanus, a town famous for Southern Right whale watching. And, it’s not a bad place to grab some fresh seafood either! We feasted on our seafood lunch perched on the rocks at Bientang’s Cave – a unique seafood restaurant formed from a cave that was previously inhabited by a famous Koi strandloper by the same name.
43341_4_WT South Africa_Book Folder.indd 14
After taming our appetites, we pushed on to the beautiful heart of the winelands, Stellenbosch, where we stayed for a night in a chalet on the splendid Beau Belle wine farm. The next day, we ventured off to the lovely Slaley Wine Cellar, and did a cheese and biltong wine tasting. The gentleman who conducted the wine tasting gave super personal attention, and was very knowledgeable and passionate about the wines. Our journey continued on to the city of Cape Town, one of my favourite cities in the world! This leg of the holiday was jam packed with sights and adventures. Unsurprisingly, we started with a trip up the worldrenowned Table Mountain in the revolving-floor cable car – the views of the city and Table Bay were mindblowing as usual! One of the days included a walk around the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, and a bite for lunch at one of the many restaurants; as well as a visit to the renowned Truth Coffee Roasting. Another day included a visit to the gorgeous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden at the foot of Table Mountain, for a walk and a picnic lunch with one of the best views in the world. Then, off to Simonstown, home to South Africa’s largest naval base. It was my first visit here, and I found a town bursting with history and a lively vibe, particularly on the main street. A visit here would not be complete without a stop at Jubilee Square, to have a photo taken with the bronze statue of Just Nuisance, the famous Great Dane. From there we headed over to Boulders Beach and walked among the African penguins. Our final trip for the day was a visit to Cape Point to ride the Flying Dutchman funicular (the name was taken from the local legend of a ghost ship). This was quite an experience, taking us up to one of the most special viewing points I’ve ever seen. Once at the top, we were blessed to have a truly spectacular sighting of two Southern Right whales, one on either side of the point, at the same time! We couldn’t have asked for a more memorable moment. The next day we dragged our feet back to the car, to tackle the long drive straight back to Johannesburg, as school and work were resuming the very next day. It’s amazing how much we saw and experienced in what felt like a short trip! After all that packed into just over a week, we almost needed a holiday, after the holiday! This is just one of my favourite stories! I have many more. I hope you get the opportunity to experience our wonderful treasures and create some wonderful memories during your visit!

MANAGING EDITOR’S MESSAGE
MADELEINE SWAIN If you are over a certain age, it’s fairly certain you will remember where you were and what you were doing on 11 February 1990, the day Nelson Mandela walked away from his prison cell on Robben Island. I was lying in a hospital bed in Birmingham, England, watching the proceedings on television. I remember becoming not a little distraught when a bubble appeared in my IV drip and I couldn’t get anyone’s attention to see to it – every nurse and, it seemed, the entire world was transfixed by what we were watching on our television screens. Accordingly of all the extraordinary places to visit in South Africa, and they are manifold, for me you can’t go past a trip to Robben Island. Taking its name from the Dutch word for ‘seal’ by early settlers, the island is 9km offshore from Cape Town and has a fascinating history, housing at various times a hospital, mental institution, leper colony and military base as well as the prison for which it became most famous, or notorious. Being able to see with your own eyes the environment where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of incarceration, to get up close to the cell, which is set up exactly as it was when he was there, as well as inspecting the lime quarry where he and his fellow prisoners toiled, is truly thought provoking and inspiring. That may be the pinnacle sight for me, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to unique and unforgettable South African experiences. Hiking with carefully armed guides on a rhino walking safari through the Kruger National Park, taking the wine-tasting trail along the Franschhoek Wine Valley in the Western Cape, going for an all-out adventure by testing your nerves with an abseiling experience courtesy of Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours in Limpopo, or, another personal highlight, visiting the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site in Taung… the options are endless. I never did find a nurse that day back in 1990, but I left the hospital anyway. If Mandela could walk free and with his head held high after his extraordinary trials and tribulations, a little thing like an IV bubble couldn’t be that important, could it? Well, clearly not. I’m still here and, over a quarter of a century later, able to recommend the places in his home country that you really should visit. Welcome to South Africa, may your visit be everything you could wish for.

The tourism industry is well-established, with an exciting sector of emerging entrepreneurs. The country’s strengths are adventure, sport, nature and wildlife travel, and South Africa is a pioneer and global leader in responsible tourism.
A lesser-known fact about South Africa is that it has achieved steady economic growth in gross domestic product (GDP) since the late 1990s. South Africa is well-known for its medical skills since Professor Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful heart transplant in 1967. There are many world-class private hospitals and medical centres around the country, especially in the urban centres. WELCOME TO
SOUTH AFRICA Wake up to the sun rising over bushveld plains, just like you’ve always imagined it, and take a drive in an open vehicle on a dawn safari. Experience the crisp morning air, the chattering of birds piercing the hushed silence as the vehicle creeps into the heart of the bush, stopping to silently absorb the unforgettable sight of hundreds of animals drinking at a watering hole. Take a hike to the top of the world’s oldest mountain range, and be mesmerised by views that feel like they stretch to the ends of the world. Let every part of you see, feel, smell and simply absorb a world around you that’s older than time itself. Join friends around a fire in the dusky evening as the sun sets on a hot day with only the sounds of the bushveld ringing in the air, while your game ranger has you hanging on to every word as he tells stories of the bush and animal fables from long ago. And then stop, and listen, as the howl of a nearby hyena pierces the air. This is a South African safari, a raw authentic experience in a world that belongs to nature. Meet the locals in a kasi (township/ghetto) and share an ice-cold beer around a braai (barbecue) on a hot summer’s day, then try some boerie (sausage) and mielie pap (similar to polenta) cooked on the coals, and share more stories and booming laughs late into the starry night. Wander through the aisles of an artisan food market and chat to chefs and bakers – from sisters who make intricately decorated cupcakes, to an Indian woman serving ‘Mother-in-Law curry’ (a fiery mix that’ll bring tears to your eyes). Try a locallybrewed beer, sitting at a long table packed with all sorts of trendy locals and visitors. Experience a coming together of young and old, hipsters, trendsetters, families and all sorts in a place made for sharing good food, good music and good times in the core of the city.
43341_4_WT South Africa_Book Folder.indd 20
Experience a truly South African spa treatment under the shade of trees in a mountainous landscape, the rhythmic hands of your masseuse and the aroma of scented oils mixing with the pure smell of nature. And then feel yourself drift into a state of relaxation you didn’t even think was possible. Travel to a small town where there’s just one traffic light, and life is taken as slowly as the summer days are long. Book into the local hotel and take your seat on the stoep (veranda) with the locals, as you contemplate life and wind down, looking out at the odd car driving by, and learn the local way of doing things. Doze off in a giant four-poster bed, snug under a down duvet and then wake up late to join the hotel’s owners for a ‘boere breakfast’ – a hearty serving of eggs, toast, sausage, beans, mushrooms and homemade jams. Take a drive through the ancient Karoo and roll down the car window to feel the dry heat of the desert. Listen to the buzzing of cicadas as you make your way down the black road snaking ahead through miles and miles of semi-arid nothingness, without a soul or a worry in sight. Hang out with the locals at a downtown rooftop bar, and feel the pure urban electricity while the orange sun slips below the horizon and the city starts to twinkle. Sip a cocktail and get into the groove of a local DJ spinning on the decks, as the crowd mingles. Share stories of your life and your hometown, exchange numbers and make friends for life. Watch the moon rise slowly above a buzzing city. See the flickering lights announce the start of the night’s festivities. Now, go out to play, eat, dance and truly live. Start the evening off with a meal fit for royalty, with more than a few drinks going around, then slide on your dancing shoes and let the nightlife take care of the rest.

Take a boat out onto the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Feel your pulse rising as the fin of a Great White splits the water. Feel your heart thump in your chest as you lower yourself into the cage, and drop into the water. Just as your face dips below the surface, razor teeth brush past the bars, and you realise just how small you are against the imposing king of the sea. Make your way through a lush forest on a mountainside; follow the damp path through giant ferns, following the sounds of a crashing waterfall and feel its misty sprays before you see it tumbling from a sheer rock face. Listen to the sound of endless waves arriving at the shore as you make your way down the boardwalk to the velvet beach, then follow the path around the giant boulders until you see a small flock of penguins, neat as pins in their black and white suits, waddling towards you. Laze around on the beach and soak in the South African sun, as swarms of happy people leap into the waves or come out looking refreshed and ready to drip dry on the hot sand. Locals know best, so maybe chat to the local surfers, to get some inside info on the best coffee in the area, which beach has the ‘raddest’ waves and which cocktail bar to hang out in for sundowners. Stand on the edge of a world-famous mountain with a glittering city below, and see that same city wrapped up in green promenades and white beaches, scattered with thousands and thousands of locals and holidaymakers. Look just beyond that and see white yachts and boats drifting to the horizon. See a whole new world from way up here, and come down a different person. Enjoy the aroma of the fresh-caught snoek, yellowtail, hake, and kingklip sizzling on a grill and complement it with one of South Africa’s many fine wines. Spoil your palate with the flavour of crayfish and thick hand-cut chips, as the seagulls ride the breeze in the skies behind you, and small wooden boats bob in the bay, the fishermen snoozing until their next fishing voyage. Stroll through narrow downtown streets and hear the laughter of friends from nearby markets; discover handmade treasures, beaded jewels, and the stories of the vibrant communities in which they were lovingly made.
Follow a tour leader on a bicycle trip through a manic township, as they point out the home of Nelson Mandela and the history of the famous street it’s on. Give the legs and the bike a little rest, and get into the atmosphere of this buzzing street with a cold drink, a traditional lunch or simply take the moment to share a little about your hometown with the locals, they love visitors here! Take a drive through the heaving city in a guided taxi ride, as your animated driver shares some of his favourite local stories and recent gossip. “That ‘shebeen queen’, Mary, she’s a favourite with her sweet smile and hearty laugh! The guys with the table on the street corner are named Thato and Tumi, and they’re brothers. They sell fruit and sweets and, if you’re friends, you’ll get a good deal every time. “There’s the clothes shop with bright shirts hanging all the way up the windows. The owner, Sameer, is always there to give you personal service until you find the perfect look just for you. And that’s all within just one block!” Chug across the country in one of the world’s most luxurious trains, and let the gentle hum of wheels on the track be the soundtrack to the breathtaking views of the South African countryside. Let the food do all the talking, as you lose yourself in the flavours of Karoo lamb, fresh trout, and a Cape Cabernet Sauvignon. Feel the breeze blowing through your hair as you stand on the deck of a yacht, the blue sea lying smooth as silk before you and the city in your wake. Let the captain regale you with stories of colourful trips across the seas and up the African shoreline. And hear him bring it back home, to the South African cities, towns, villages and people he loves, the accents, languages, flavours, beauty and genuine smiles that welcome him back each and every time. Whatever journey you take through this truly amazing country, every trip brings new, raw moments; every meeting starts a new friendship; and every authentic and sense-tingling experience will leave you feeling changed, inspired and free. There’s really no place like this. Welcome!
Go on a shopping spree! Shop until your arms can’t carry any more bags! Where the shops sparkle like diamonds, tempting you with glitzy jewellery, watches and top clothing brands from around the world. Chat to a stall holder at a flea market as he shows you how every bead is carefully chosen to create wire pieces: from lions, to rhinos and beautiful giraffes. Dig deeper and maybe learn a little culture, like the stories behind Zulu love letters and the messages of love they bring. Come to a place where the world’s most beautiful wine route invites you to live life to the fullest. Before you even take a sip, journey through vineyards that look like they came out of dream, surrounded by majestic mountains. And, when the time comes to savour that first sip, the flavour simply completes the perfect day.

COASTAL BEACH With our country’s 2500km-long coastline, in South Africa you are never too far away from the sea. From our tropical East Coast all the way to the sun-scorched West Coast, there’s no shortage of beaches, sights and seaside life to craft the stories that match that sun-kissed tan. The ocean has always shaped the lives of the South Africans who live closest to it. It has written their stories and even their favourite recipes. The fishing communities are masters at catching something fresh daily for you to enjoy while overlooking the water. Here, the beach is a way of life where the locals tan for hours and surfers live for the break of a wave. With the ocean as a backdrop, a hike can end with a delicious beach braai where freshly caught fish and lobster are prepared over a fire. For social butterflies, a walk up to one of the beach bars, while your hair is still wet and your feet a little sandy, is a perfect opportunity to take a break from the sun. Chat to a local and you will hear folklore of mermaids, the seawater’s healing properties, myths about the Flying Dutchman or just a little gossip about the townspeople. Our coast is also where we come to meet the amazing life of the ocean face to face. For something a little different, follow the footsteps of the friendly African penguins at our southernmost tip, swim with the dolphins in the Indian Ocean, see whales breaching in Hermanus, visit iSimangaliso, South Africa’s biggest fresh water reserve, or go shark-cage diving in Sodwana Bay, and see just how small you are next to a Great White. If you’re lucky, you could even witness our giant turtles laying their eggs on deserted beaches or watch their cute hatchlings make their first wobbly run to the sea. If you need a little break from the salt, sand and sea, or just want to explore inland, you’re never too far from a safari experience, mountain hikes and unforgettable days that add a whole new level of amazing to your trip. No matter what experience you’re looking for, South Africa has the perfect coastal holiday for any budget, so pack your swimming costume and sunglasses, and get ready to hit the beach.

WILDLIFE AND SAFARI No one ever forgets those first early morning journeys into the African bush, the electricity of anticipation frozen in hushed silences as you await your first big sighting. South Africa has always captured the imagination of travellers from all over the world as a place that preserves the raw spirit of the African wild. With world-renowned nature reserves and preservation areas sprawling over our many landscapes, the Big Five are always closer than you think. South Africa has some of the most iconic and unique parks in the world, from indulgent private reserves to our four Transfrontier conservation areas that spread uninterrupted across provincial and international borders. The famous Kruger National Park marks its territory by hogging a chunk of the South African map the size of Wales, with more species of big game than any other reserve in Africa. The Addo Elephant Park rings with the sounds of trumpets in an area so large it envelopes five of South Africa’s eight biomes, stretching from the semi-arid planes of the Karoo to the Indian Ocean. Further north, black-maned Kalahari lions roam the iconic red dunes of the 3.6 million-hectare Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. In a country so diverse with so much natural life to share, South African safari doesn’t just mean bushveld; it means, jungle, forest, river and ocean safaris. It means guided or unguided trips in all forms. It means cantering through grasslands, along mountain tops and beaches on a horseback safari, or getting closer to the ground to absorb the textures and smells of the wild on a senseawakening walking safari. And, of course, nothing paints a perfect picture like a safari view shared with the birds from a hot-air balloon. At the end of long day in the bush, it’s time to unwind in the luxury of our world-class lodges and perhaps tame that wild appetite with a feast to put all feasts to shame. In fact, safari experiences are never too far from comfort or bustling cities, shopping, cultural hubs, adventure activities and beautiful accommodation for every kind of holiday and budget. South Africa is the doorway to a world that truly belongs to nature, and to be part of it, even for a day, is truly unforgettable.

SCENIC BEAUTY From our diverse savannahs where the Big Five roam, to tropical coastlines, deserts, mountains and dense forests, the face of the South African landscape has many expressions. As one of the world’s truest megadiverse countries, a drive in any direction can take you through two, three or even four of our eight biomes in one day, so you might need to clear some space on your camera before you get here. In the dry grasslands of the Highveld, Johannesburg sits way up on the Great Escarpment at 1500m above sea level. However, it’s not uncommon to head out on an out-of-the-blue trip to the tropical east coast for beaches, surfing and sea-side chill spots, just a morning’s drive away. Heading west, travellers are led through South Africa’s iconic Karoo, a harsh, but magical terrain your eyes and camera can’t possibly get enough of. The Khoisan called the Karoo ‘the land of thirst’, a mind-blowing flat expanse of semi-desert, low-shrub and prehistoric plant-life. When the rains come, the amazing Karoo flowers come to life, exploding with fiery colours, and the Namaqualand daisies bloom as far as the eye can see. There’s no need to limit yourself to one type of experience or holiday in South Africa, when something new and amazing is always within arm’s reach; like KwaZulu-Natal’s Tugela Falls, the second highest waterfall in the world, or the world’s longest wine route through the valleys and mountains of the Western Cape. And, of course, you can’t go home until you’ve seen Table Mountain, rising from the centre of beautiful Cape Town – our very own World Wonder. Further north, the Drakensberg Mountains, known as the ‘Barrier of Spears’ to the Zulus are a ‘must-see’, an unbelievable prehistoric geographic formation and World Heritage Site that has inspired thousands of years of mythology. Its gorges, rivers, rock pools, peaks and caves are the backdrop to unreal hiking experiences and the canvas for one of the largest collections of ancient rock art in the world. If ever there was a country for a road trip, South Africa is it. Hire a car or get on a bus and journey down the Wild Coast to see shipwrecks, cliffs, beaches and cows that swim in the sea (yes… really!). Or head through Mpumalanga to see twisting baobabs, waterfalls, safari landscapes and a view from God’s Window that is so incredible, the name comes as no surprise. Wherever you are travelling, after a day of soaking in the sights, you’re always in touching distance of luxury accommodation and comfort for any budget, to kick back and relax before doing it all again the next day. It’s also the perfect time to take a moment and look up at a sky packed with more stars than you’ve ever seen. Come, see landscapes and scenery like nowhere else in the world, and experience a place that makes you say “wow” over and over again, because that’s the only word left when you’re truly lost for words.

ACTIVE ADVENTURE As South Africans, we’re born for the outdoors and, luckily for us, into a country that’s simply made for it. This is the place to feed your hunger for new experiences, to ignite your senses and quench your thirst for adventure in a setting like no other. If you just love being outside, few things feed the soul more than stretching the legs on a sunset walk along stunning beachside promenades, or setting out on a morning cycle in the direction of who knows where (and who cares...) amongst rugged mountains, or beautiful forests. And, to feel truly at peace, you can’t beat soul-freeing hikes or horseback trails under the canopy of the never-ending South African sky. For those adventurous spirits who like to live a little closer to edge, there’s no shortage of challenges to your ‘bravado’ here. Take on the world’s highest commercial bridge bungee at the unbelievable Bloukrans Bridge, swing from the towering arch of the epic Moses Mabida Stadium, feel your blood stampede through your veins as you dive with the Great Whites in Cape Town, raft down the famous Orange River, go abseiling in Knysna’s unreal Stroms River Gorge, or get the board out and head into the barrel of one of the world-famous waves at Jeffreys Bay. And if you’ve got a bit of competitive spirit, or just want to be part of something special, join us annually for some of our celebrated sporting events, including the Cape Town Cycle Tour, Comrades Marathon, Midmar Mile and many more. With an adventure around every corner for any budget, there’s no need to choose just one! It’s a place to do it all, a place for new experiences, ones to tick off the bucket list, or for a hobby that is crying out for an inspiring new setting. Between activities, there’s plenty of time to chill out, make new friends, soak up the sun and let your taste buds dance to the flavour of South African food. Our beautiful world is your playground, so come on, get the bike out, slip on the running shoes, or put on your adrenaline hat and head out to explore!

CITY LIFESTYLE Welcome to the urban South African’s playground – the city. If our main cities had personalities, Cape Town would be the beautiful model friend who enjoys a good tan and an art gallery experience. Durban would be the easy-going, street-smart guy who knows where to find the tastiest bunny chow and beer. Johannesburg would be the business-savvy friend that is equal parts class and sass. In our cities, lights glow not only to beautify the night’s face, but they are the dazzle that invites every neighbourhood to a dance-off. Whether they are dancing to celebrate a momentous event or taking to the streets during a music-charged revolution, the urban-dwellers are both the party-throwers and goers. From the jazzy nights of 1970s Sophiatown to today’s downtown hip hop culture, we have been dancing for decades and show no signs of stopping. Music, sports and cultural festivals are events that people anticipate for months and even travel for here. Every year, hundreds of people trek to Oppikoppi, the Cape Town Jazz Festival and the Durban July, where they are dazzled by the talents of our local and international acts. Our unique art culture can be found in places like Maboneng Precinct and any of the many informal markets in the country. Shopping could be considered a national sport in which urbanites are gold-medallists, and with world-class malls in all of our major cities, we know exactly where to find a great bargain and where to break the bank. Hemingways, Sandton City Mall and Gateway Theatre of Shopping are just a few go-to places for the biggest designer brands in the world. We are nourished by the many coffee shops in our leafy suburbs on lazy Sunday afternoons, the spazas with their signature kotas in Soweto and the posh restaurants Instagram dreams are made of. Our elixir of life is a good beer over a braai and chatter with friends or during a soccer match at the local pub. We relax in five-star hotels, where service with a smile is commonplace, enjoy brisk walks in our botanical wonderland city parks and find our zen in spas that are sandwiched between nature and conservation parks. The city is never far from the calm of the wild, and a bushveld experience is just a few kilometres away. Every part of our cities is an event and you are invited.

CULTURAL ROOTS No term better describes this culturally-diverse country more than Desmond Tutu’s ‘Rainbow Nation’. We are a colourful mixture of cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds, each with a unique outlook and way of life. South Africa is the family tree that begins at the roots, where our ancestors are the heroes and villains we still tell our children about. The Cradle of Humankind, just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, is said to be where it all began. Home to the world’s earliest known human fossils, it is here where you can travel back in time to trace your origins. South Africa’s rich history is preserved and celebrated in its museums, cultural villages and monuments. Here you can discover how Queen Modjadji’s dances are done to summon the rain, songs are sung to inspire revolution and coloured beads are used to symbolise things unseen by the naked eye. An amazing human story has played out in South Africa. Just a short boat ride off the coast of Cape Town takes you to Robben Island, the prison where apartheid freedom fighters like Nelson Mandela were held for many years during the dark apartheid era. For a truly memorable experience, one can visit Vilakazi Street in the bustling township of Soweto to see the former home of Nelson Mandela and experience a place that captures the true spirit of the everyday South African. It’s also a great place to stop for a tasty traditional meal and a couple of drinks with the locals. Ubuntu is something we are all well versed in, a philosophy that puts humanity, humility and community first in everything that we do. In South Africa, this is felt in every smile, handshake and friendly “hello”. We welcome you into our beautifully painted Ndebele houses, our traditional Zulu mud huts, adventureready tents and five-star lodges. We invite you to taste the flavours of our braais, traditional foods and our fine dining. Come and see the colours of our intricately beaded necklaces, our contemporary art pieces and our sequined saris. We call you to hear the unique sounds of our Kwaito, Maskandi and Boeremusiek. So put on your dancing shoes and feel right at home. Because, in South Africa, you never come here as just a guest but as an extension of our family.

Today, it has embraced tourism and revels in a vibrant energy, inviting the world to experience a rich authentic South African story. Vilakazi Street, once the home of two Nobel Laureates, Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela, is the pulsating heartbeat of Soweto. An important street in history, it is also the best place to meet some cool locals, grab a tasty meal, move to some music on the street and admire colourful crafts and street performers. Generally heaving with weekend good-time vibes by Thursday evening, with more than a couple of craft beers and cocktails going around, it’s a great place to experience the quintessential Jozi nightlife.
NELSON MANDELA STATUE, UNION BUILDINGS – PRETORIA Government Avenue, Pretoria
A striking site of remembrance to the father of our nation, Nelson Mandela, the Mandela Statue stands 9m tall, depicting the great man himself with his arms spread in a symbolic embrace with the spectacular architecture of the Union Buildings behind him. This must-visit site sits high up on Meintjies Hill overlooking Pretoria, with great views and a unique photo opportunity with our hero. The Union Buildings are a sight to behold; they are the very centre of political activity in South Africa since their completion in 1913. The architecture is magnificent, and the beautiful surrounding gardens and 9000-seat green amphitheatre complete a perfect venue for a sunny day out or picnic at this historical site.

WELCOME TO THE
WESTERN CAPE At the tip of the African continent, the Western Cape dazzles with incredible scenery, iconic attractions and sheer diversity. From the magnificent Cape Mountains, to picture-perfect winelands and a dream coastline dotted with historic towns and a truly unique, floral kingdom that exists nowhere else. The wealth of attractions here makes for holidays within holidays, and bucket lists within bucket lists! The jewel of this province is Cape Town, South Africa’s iconic Mother City, which is without a doubt one of the world’s favourite holiday destinations. There aren’t many things more exceptional than seeing Table Mountain rise from the centre of this historic city. A truly remarkable experience is taking a cable car up to the very top to see the city shining and thriving below, wrapped up in bright green promenades and perfect white beaches. Cape Town is known for spoiling its adoring stream of visitors with a special Cape Town energy – a recipe of awesome diversity, beach life, outdoor culture and a carnival-like atmosphere felt in buzzing beachside restaurants and bars throughout the day and well into the night. If you can tear your eyes away from the sights, there’s an incredible history to dive into as well, from the original inhabitants of South Africa, the brutal slave trade that touched our shores, the colonisation in 1652, and the cultural journey of South Africa through the apartheid era right up to the current day, where we celebrate our culture and diversity. Just off the coast, a short ferry ride will take you to Robben Island, a World Heritage Site and the infamous prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment.
penguins and Cape fur seals – translating into a range of truly unusual safari experiences. The Western Cape also acts as the starting point to embark on South Africa’s most-loved road trip, the Garden Route. This world-famous coastal scenic drive is packed with extraordinary sights, experiences, and awesome stopover towns and holiday spots like George and Knysna. With so many undeniably ‘photo-worthy’ moments, you would do well to get any actual driving done! Or perhaps head inland along Route 62, which traces the so-called ‘World’s Longest Wine Route’ and also takes you through the endless flat planes of the semi-desert region of the Little Karoo. Head out to the West Coast and experience seafood heaven, with the catch of the day, fresh from the ocean and onto your plate at any of the popular towns along this sun-drenched stretch. As a special treat, in spring there is the opportunity to see millions of wild flowers burst into life in the West Coast National Park and the rugged Cederberg mountains. Whether you choose Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, packed with local and international cultures, sights, entertainment, food, beaches and nightlife, or opt to explore the stunning winelands, the arid Little Karoo, the forests and coastal panoramas of the Garden Route or any of the mountains, beaches and holiday havens in any direction, you won’t be disappointed with the Western Cape.
And up the road from Cape Town, as if there’s not enough beauty to go around, you’ll find yourself in a world of wine and wonder, with well over a hundred wine estates that make up the spectacular Cape Winelands. Wine tours through this region are about crisp, white Cape Dutch architecture set against stunning mountain views, exceptional foodie experiences, hikes and adventure activities that pair perfectly with some of the world’s finest wines. If you’re willing to venture a little further afield, a visit to Overberg and the coastal town of Hermanus offers some of the best land-based whale watching in the world, during the seasons when the Southern Right whales make these waters their seasonal home. This stretch of coast is also a unique habitat for one of the largest populations of Great White sharks the world over, remarkable colonies of African

There’s never a dull moment at the V&A Waterfront, constantly buzzing with activity and entertainment all the way through the week. Table Mountain stands watch on one side and the busy life of Table Bay Harbour can be experienced on the other side. South Africa’s most famous waterfront is lined with popular restaurants and gorgeous views. It is undoubtedly one of the best places to grab a seafood lunch under a shady umbrella at the water’s edge, as you watch the ships come and go. If the food isn’t enough to draw you in, there’s an IMAX theatre, the indulgent Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre, the world-class Two Oceans Aquarium as well as the Maritime, Chavonnes Battery, and Springbok Experience museums. There is also always something going on at the central amphitheatre with lively street performers entertaining crowds all day long.
FRANSCHHOEK WINE VALLEY 62 Huguenot Road, Franschhoek, 7690
Regarded as the gourmet capital of South Africa, the beautiful Franschhoek Wine Valley has been delivering spectacular food and wine experiences for decades. Franschhoek is a world of wine and cuisine inspired by the French Huguenots who settled here in the 17th century. The name actually means ‘French Corner’ in Dutch, and the French flavour is still evident, particularly in its famous wines like the Cap Classique. The bright green winelands, set against the magnificent Cape mountains and boundless leisure and adventure activities make for wonderful day trips, weekends or entire weeks spent in one of the world’s most scenic wine regions.

It is an incredible spot to end off your week, and an especially joyful and energetic place to welcome the new week on festive Sundays. A popular after-party venue for many of Cape Town’s cultural events, Mzoli’s Place will have you squeaking your dancing shoes on the floor to the rhythms of some of the city’s best-known DJs and bands.
BREE STREET Bree Sreet, Cape Town, 8001
Cape Town is a pretty hip place, so for this to be unofficially crowned ‘the hippest’ street, is kind of a big deal. Bree Street’s gourmet restaurants, happening bars and beautiful architecture all conspire to keep you there all day, and well into the night. It is no doubt a foodie’s dream, sporting Cape Town’s biggest and most progressive food talent to go with quirky restaurant interiors jam-packed with happy crowds. One of the most scenic and spectacular roads in the world, this 9km journey takes you along 114 curves and bends that hug the near-vertical face of the mountain from Hout Bay to Noordhoek. This rocky and winding coastal roadway means motorists have to drive slowly and cautiously, which is perfect for taking in the sights, and stopping at numerous safety pull-over spots to stretch the legs and grab some amazing photographs of the surrounding mountains, or the view across the Atlantic Ocean and the shoreline that meets it.
CAMPS BAY Cape Town, 8005
While supermodels and rock stars of the world seem to have adopted Camps Bay as their hangout, it’s also a great place for families, backpackers and tourists of all descriptions. Camps Bay sports some of the trendiest places in Cape Town to see and be seen in, right on one of the country’s most downright perfect beaches. ISIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK
Mkhomazi Wilderness area, Drakensberg, 3257
Situated on the east coast of KwaZuluNatal, South Africa, about 275km north of Durban.
Part of South Africa’s ancient escarpment, the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains tower higher than any other in South Africa. The name uKhahlamba means ‘Barrier of Spears’ in Zulu because of its fortress-like appearance. This range is a 1000km stretch of breathtaking jagged peaks almost resembling buttresses. Its mythical feel makes it a fitting home for hundreds of caves containing more than 30,000 mystical San rock art paintings. The astounding mountains, surrounding rivers, valleys, plants and wildlife all form part of one of South Africa’s most sought-after outdoor and adventure regions. Hikers, mountaineers, abseilers, rock climbers and even skiers flock to the highest vantage points to be treated to the most incredible panoramas of South Africa, while others are drawn in by kayaking, tubing and swimming in the stunning rivers, or taking on the terrain on 4x4 trails or quad bike tours. For those craving pure relaxation, there are organised walks and horseback experiences, allowing you to marvel at the amazing sheer cliff face called the Amphitheatre.
MANDELA CAPTURE SITE Mandela Capture Site, R103, Howick, 3290 Take a trip to Howick to the exact spot where Nelson Mandela was finally captured by the apartheid police in 1952 to learn more about a moment that symbolises the beginning of his ‘Long Walk to Freedom’. The centrepiece of this important memorial is a powerful sculpture consisting of 50 freestanding steel columns that only when viewed from a specific angle and distance resolve into a gorgeous portrait of the world’s most famous political prisoner and peace symbol. A view made even more special by the background of the peaceful KZN Midlands scenery peeking through it.

The iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site is a gift to the world, preserving some of the rarest, most diverse and important ecosystems in the world. This incredible 332,000ha stretch is made up of eight interdependent ecosystems, stretching over safari terrain, enormous lakes, wetlands, coastal dune forests, beaches and ocean. It’s impossible to capture the full scope of wonder here in words. Discover more about the 1200 fish species around the beautiful reefs at Sodwana Bay, the province’s second largest hippo and crocodile population in Lake Sibaya, and 420 bird species, leopards, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, wild dogs, cheetahs and hyenas in the Mkuze ecosystem. Lake St Lucia is home to more hippos, crocodiles and immense flocks of flamingos and pelicans. Choose from guided 4x4 excursions, scuba diving, snorkelling or nature hikes to experience just how extraordinary our planet is.
SODWANA BAY Located on the east coast of South Africa, between St. Lucia and Lake Sibhayi

Ever wondered what it’s like to ride on top of a wave? Maybe you have visions of yourself trotting into the water with a surfboard under your arm? Whatever you’re hoping to get out of it, there aren’t many better ways to spend sandy beach days in Durban than picking up a cool new skill in the warm Indian Ocean water. Even if you’ve never tried surfing before, don’t be shy to stroll down to the southern end of Durban’s Golden Mile and sign up for your first lesson. Who knows, you might be a natural, and if not, it makes for a whole lot a fun and a pretty impressive story. (No one really needs to know how good or bad you were!)

Stretching from Zimbali in the south to the Thukela River in the north, the North Coast is often called the Dolphin Coast due to the hundreds of Bottlenose dolphins that grace its waters. But, don’t let the dolphins steal all the limelight. This region with its semi-tropical climate, flawless beaches and rocking seaside hotels and resorts is cloud-nine for holidaymakers. All year round, the popular towns of Ballito, Salt Rock, Umdloti and Zinkwazi lie primed and ready to fill beach holidays with seaside activities for all travellers. The coast can be explored by boat for front-row seats to watch dolphins at play, on horseback to take in the natural sites or by microlight for a bird’s-eye view of this magical area.

Heading way up north of the province, the picturesque town of Parys keeps up the trend of chilled-out Free State towns, with a selection of activities to match as well as access to the world’s largest meteor impact crater at the World Heritage Site, Vredefort Dome. When looking for a little relief from the hot, dry landscape, holiday makers are drawn to the holiday atmosphere and natural beauty of rivers such as the Ash River, Vaal River and Orange River. VREDEFORT DOME Vredefort crater
The Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site is the world’s largest impact crater, where a meteorite measuring 10km in diameter, slammed into the ground about two billion years ago. Located 100km south-west of Johannesburg, the enormous meteorite, said to be larger than Table Mountain, left an impact crater measuring 180km across. The original crater is still visible today, its edges forming the beautiful cradle of hills near Parys and Vredefort. These days the Vredefort Dome Conservancy is an excellent place for adventure tourism and fossil hunting.
HORSEBACK SAFARI 183 Hennopsriver, R511, Hennopsriver, 0026
The Free State is perfect for a horseback safari, with its wide open planes providing plenty of cantering room and 360-degree views, interrupted only by sandstone cliffs. This is one of the most immersive ways to take in this sun-drenched landscape. Beginners have the option of peaceful horseback strolls and getting off the horse to experience the grasslands on foot, while more experienced riders might choose to let the wind whip through their hair as they gallop alongside eland, zebra, red hartebeest, black wildebeest, blesbok, springbok and rhebuck in the rugged Free State landscape.

GOLDEN GATE HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK Clarens, 9707
The Golden Gate Highlands National Park lies in the western foothills of the Maluti Mountains, close to the Lesotho border. Loved for its unusual scenery and renowned for its sandstone mountains with their golden cliffs, this is one of the most recognisable National Parks in the country. It is South Africa’s only grassland national park with 11,600ha of land, and home to a variety of mammals including the black wildebeest, springbok and Burchell’s zebra. Birdlife at the Golden Gate is also a special treat, as this area plays host to the rare Bearded vulture (lammergeier) making it a paradise for photography. This rustic, tranquil landscape, the stomping ground of dinosaurs millions of years ago, is the ideal escape for those looking to stretch their legs in the fresh mountain air on a guided walk or hike. Here, every path is an adventure with ancient caves, San rock art, wildlife and natural beauty at every turn.

TSA LAPENG CRAFTS Near Harrismith
On a walk through the humble Makholokoeng village, you might see several women absorbed in creating traditional beadwork, knitting and other crafts while joining in a melodic traditional Sesotho song. These are the cheerful members of a women’s empowerment project known as Tsa Lapeng Crafts in the Free State, near Harrismith. The project is a testament to the power of traditional craft as a way of making a living for disadvantaged communities. This valuable program has empowered many women through skills training and business management, and has provided many of them with their own land and cattle to look after. On your visit, you can support the program by buying exquisite, authentically-crafted cotton jerseys, crocheted brooches, hats and bags, individually made by these talented women.
ANGLO BOER WAR MUSEUM Monument Road, Bloemfontein, 9301
South Africa began the 20th century in a state of war, a clash between British imperialism and Afrikaner (Boer) nationalism, lasting from 1899 to 1902. Bloemfontein’s Anglo-Boer War Museum tells the full story of this intriguing and bloody chapter in our history. Spend the day exploring this major point in South African history, tracing the development of events from start to finish. THABO MOFUTSANYANA North-eastern corner of the Free State
Tucked away in the north-eastern corner of the Free State, bordering the magnificent Maluti Mountains, Thabo Mofutsanyana is a place where prehistoric animals, early tribes, forces of nature and time itself have all had a hand in writing the long history of the distinctive landscape. Undoubtedly one of the most ruggedly beautiful parks in South Africa, it is home to many secrets – the oldest dinosaur embryos ever discovered were found here in 1978, along with fossilised prehistoric animal remains and San rock paintings that take you back in time. Whether you choose to hike the nature trails, join a guided walk or even take a horseback safari, this park is the perfect setting for sunrise-to-sunset explorations.
BASOTHO CULTURAL VILLAGE Bethlehem

It is a fascinating place to soak in the authentic Basotho culture, listen to African folklore and become familiar with the gentle sounds of handmade musical instruments. Take a guided tour to taste some traditionally brewed beer, share dipadi (toasted ground maize with a bit of salt and sugar) and dance along with some friendly locals. You can also buy an iconic, coneshaped Basotho hat, called mokorotlo, to keep the sun at bay. And while you’re there, look out for traditional Basotho blankets, their beautiful designs have recently featured on the international fashion runway.

PILANESBERG GAME RESERVE Bojanala, North West
What exactly sets Pilanesberg Game Reserve apart from other national parks? What makes the trip so worthwhile and memorable? It might be that this national park is set within the crater of an ancient volcano, a landscape moulded 1.2 billion years ago by overflowing magma. Today it is one of the very best game-viewing parks in the whole country. Pilanesberg safari days are saturated with viewings and have visitors peeling their eyes for elephants, lions, buffaloes, leopards, rhinos, rare African wild dogs and soaring eagles. This unique terrain is the place to entertain your adventurous side, ‘roughing it’ in a safari tent in the bush, or sipping a glass of fine wine on the balcony of a luxury lodge, while absorbing every inch of the bushveld panorama outside your window.
OUTDOOR ADVENTURES AT HARTBEESPOORT DAM Hartbeespoort, 0216
Hartbeespoort is a small, charming town in the eastern corner of the North West, bordering the Gauteng province. The large Hartbeespoort Dam, and surrounding bushveld and hills, seem like they were created for the purpose of outdoor fun and entertainment. Boating and water sports are the staple, and visitors can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, parasailing and water skiing before unwinding on a sundowner cruise. And then there are hikes, walks, 4x4, quad biking and camping to complete the full outdoor experience. The dam also boasts one of South Africa’s few inland dive sites. For the best views, the newly renovated aerial cableway over the dam, to the top of the looming mountain, is one of the best ways to appreciate the dam and nearby valleys. If you’re looking to go even higher, views don’t get much better than from way up on a paragliding or hot-air ballooning experience.

LESEDI CULTURAL VILLAGE R512, Broederstroom, Johannesburg, 0240
The Lesedi Cultural Village was co-founded by the famous National Geographic explorer Kingsley Holgate, who envisioned it as an attraction that engages visitors. Located near the Hartbeespoort Dam, it is tailored for visitors who want to learn more about South Africa’s traditional people and cultures. Guests arriving in Lesedi are taken on a guided tour through Zulu, Nguni, Xhosa, Pedi, Basotho and Ndebele cultural villages, to learn about their unique rituals and folklore. The day ends in captivating traditional song and dance, and a delicious African dinner fit for royalty, at the Nyama Choma restaurant. Expect rich flavours of impala, ostrich and crocodile meat to tantalise the taste buds! As an added treat, guests can choose to spend a couple of nights in a traditional hut with homely comforts, or a number of other accommodation offerings, from luxury suites in the Nguni village to twin rooms in the Ndebele homestead.

GUIDED WALKS THROUGH MADIKWE GAME RESERVE R49, 2874
This park tells a unique and inspiring conservation story. In 1991, an economically-driven project was planned to transform a number of cattle farms into a wildlife conservation area to benefit the local people financially by creating new jobs and opportunities. What followed was ‘Operation Phoenix’, a staggering translocation of 8000 animals to this area. Today, it is one of South Africa’s finest reserves, with professional game rangers and the friendliest hospitality staff playing their part, and abundant wildlife completing a perfect safari experience. Guided walks are the ultimate raw safari experience on offer here. Imagine yourself creeping through the bushveld in hushed silence, before your guide signals for you to stop as he spots a wild animal just 100m away. Imagine feeling every sense tingle as you move deeper and deeper into the wild, waiting for the next sighting while listening to fascinating stories and facts about the surrounding bush. It’s hard not to feel at home in Madikwe’s calming wilderness, especially when you know there’s a mighty feast and a luxurious day at the pool waiting for you back at the lodge.

You’ll fly at anything from 1800m to treetop height, right above herds of antelope, grazing white rhinos (the Pilanesberg is one of the best places in the world to see white rhinos), giraffes, zebras, elephants and buffaloes. On a perfect day, you might even spot a lion or leopard, if you’ve got good eyes! Make sure you pack a pair of binoculars, your best camera and a warm jacket (even in summer), and you will be all set for a safari with a twist.

TAUNG Taung, 8584
Brits, 250 For an exhilarating adventure, zip up your wetsuit, adjust your mask, tighten your fins and set your navigator for an inland destination that’s under an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Travellers don’t often head away from the ocean to an inland dive destination, but Miracle Waters, near Hartbeespoort Dam, is one of the exceptions. Here you’ll find a 33m-deep, open-cast chrome mine, forming a crystalclear spring lake. Along with black bass, various kurper species and other freshwater wildlife, the waters hold submerged treasures including a bus, an aeroplane, a Puma helicopter and several sunken yachts to explore. This peculiar site offers divers of all skill levels hours of entertainment, and a unique story to tell.
THE PALACE AT THE LOST CITY
The famous Taung Child is a 2.5 million-year-old fossilised skull discovered in 1924. The discovery site in the town of Taung is part of the UNESCO Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, and marks one of the most important fossil discoveries in history. The Taung Heritage Route takes you on a journey through these sites, to unravel the story of human evolution and the prehistoric lives of our ancestors. These discoveries point to the theory that the earliest humans originated here in Southern Africa. The 45km route, with views and tours of the Blue Pools, a limestone waterfall, a collection of natural rock basins, and streams and caves in a flowing river valley is as much a visual delight as it is informative and educational.

The route includes the old lighthouse that once guided ships into Algoa Bay, the largest South African flag in the world, the historic Phoenix Hotel, and a colourful collection of 67 art pieces at the base of the city’s famous stone pyramid and many, many more historical sites and modern-day cultural displays.

STORMS RIVER KAYAK AND LILO SAFARI Storms River Mouth, 6309,
If you really want to experience this part of the world, take a kayaking and lilo trip into the incredible Storms River Gorge, to drift through the river’s long, deep, quiet pools taking in sights of cliffs, deep caves and the wonderful views of the surrounding Tsitsikamma Forest. Some trips begin in the famous gorge, while others have you paddling from the nearby harbour across the ocean, under the iconic suspension bridge and into the stunning mouth of the Storms River. When the course of the river gets too narrow, the lilos come into play, specially designed for you to drift through the shallower, rockier or narrower parts of the journey and if needed wade through the water, or get out and navigate the wild terrain on foot. This river safari is about exploring every part of the scenic surroundings, moving into dark echoing caves, diving from cliffs and plunging into pools of cool water, experiencing the smell of the forest, the sounds of nearby wildlife and unforgettable views.
ADDO ELEPHANT PARK R335 Paterson Road, Addo, 6105
The Addo Elephant Park was established in 1999 to save 11 elephants and it has since kept growing and thriving. South Africa’s third largest park, it is now home to a staggering 350 of these big-eared residents, as well as 280 Cape buffaloes, lions, black rhinos, and to round off the Big Seven on offer, there is a unique opportunity to view sharks and whales as well. It’s hard to explain the beauty or define this place because its 120,000ha stretches over so many landscapes, including hundreds of unique and unspoilt ecosystems. In terms of experiencing it, safari has a pretty wide definition here. You can take in this amazing park and see South Africa’s most famous elephants on guided or unguided drives, on foot and on horseback, depending on where the predators are! At the end of safari days, fall back into the spectacular comfort of the park’s numerous luxury and affordable lodges, or get your camping gear out for something a little more authentic.

THE FIVE BIOME CITY Thicket Biome – Settlers Park Grassland Biome – Van Der Kemps Forest Biome – Van Stadens Nama Karoo Biome – Swartkops Fynbos Biome – Cape Recife Few people are aware of the amazing fact that Nelson Mandela Bay is the Five Biome City. This municipal region, which includes the city of Port Elizabeth, amazingly incorporates five of South Africa’s eight biomes. It makes this area truly unique, especially when you consider that these biomes exist in and around a city. This impressive display of diversity is on show in a number of municipal reserves a heartbeat away from the buzz of the city, many featuring species of plants entirely endemic to the area. Experience the best of these natural treasures on the Outward Bound Route, and take part in walking trails and wildlife experiences just a few minutes drive from the heart of Port Elizabeth.
NELSON MANDELA MUSEUM Corner Nelson Mandela Drive & Owen Street, Bhunga Building, Mthatha, 5009
Visiting South Africa is as much about wildlife, beaches and scenery as it is about immersing yourself in a truly inspiring human story. The Nelson Mandela Museum takes you through the incredible story of Nelson Mandela, an international symbol of peace and strength of human spirit. Follow in his footsteps, tracing his path from humble beginnings to his days as a lawyer, then a liberation fighter and onto his life as South Africa’s most revered statesman. The museum consists of three separate locations, the Bhunga Building in Mthatha that traces his ‘Long Walk to Freedom’, the Qunu component where he spent most of his childhood and the open-air museum at Mvezo, where Mandela was born. Guided tours take you through this fascinating journey into the life of this heroic figure, with some including trips to other impressive sites in the area as well.
BAVIAANSKLOOF WORLD HERITAGE SITE Baviannskloof Nature Reserve
World Heritage Site, the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, 90km west of Port Elizabeth, has long been a drawcard for nature lovers, particularly those who love to go off-road to explore this unforgettable mountain wilderness. Take the opportunity to get in a car and navigate one of the most picturesque dirt roads in the country, or wind around two spectacular mountain passes in one of the most ruggedly beautiful conservation areas in South Africa. The most popular route for 4x4 lovers is the 200km Baviaanskloof Valley, a six-hour course with views of the Baviaanskloof and Kouga mountains. If you’re not into the world of 4x4’ing there are also many guided and unguided safari adventures to be had throughout this region with a chance to include fish eagles, baboons, vervet monkeys as well as mountain zebras and Cape buffaloes in your holiday snaps.

HOLE IN THE WALL
STEVE BIKO MUSEUM
Mqanduli, Eastern Cape, South Africa, Africa
Ginsberg Township, King William’s Town, Eastern Cape
Hole in the Wall is a weird name for a town, right? But stroll down to the beach and you’ll see the name isn’t nearly as bizarre as the iconic natural formation from which it is derived. The famous ‘Hole in the Wall’ takes centre stage in holiday photos; it is a massive arch carved by relentless waves, over millions of years, into a large rock formation of solid Ecca shale, sandstone and hard volcanic dolerite. This popular site and the legendary backpacker town that shares its name are definite go-to destinations along the Eastern Cape’s exceptional Wild Coast route, with plenty more activities and adventures to be had in the area.
The Steve Biko Memorial in Ginsberg, outside King William’s Town, is dedicated to one of the most charismatic, outspoken and influential activists in South Africa’s struggle history. Biko was the inspirational founder of the Black Consciousness movement in South Africa, a response to the oppressive apartheid regime. As leader of the South African Students’ Organisation inspired by the consciousness movement of the United States and later spokesmen of the larger Black People’s Convention, he ignited a new way of thinking for black South Africans and sparked a culture of resistance that played a huge part in the notorious Soweto Uprising in 1976. His actions would eventually see him beaten to death by security police while in custody. Organised tours tell this amazing story and lead you through a collection of sites that make up the Memorial, such as his mother’s house in Ginsberg, the Steve Biko Bridge and the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance where he is buried.
HUMEWOOD GOLF CLUB Marine Drive, Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth, 6001
Situated on the sand dunes of Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth, the celebrated Humewood Golf Course looks proudly over the Indian Ocean. Designed in 1929, the course is inspired by the famous ‘Old Course’ at St Andrews in Scotland. This unique course is one of the only genuine links courses left outside of Britain. The course’s original white-walled, doublestorey clubhouse looks out onto a pristine course of rare beauty with wide fairways to compensate for the strong coastal winds, deep bunkers and manicured greens. It’s no wonder golf enthusiasts from all over the world queue to play this course. It’s best to stay on the fairway because the rough, consisting of thick coastal bush in some parts, might not be willing to give your ball back.

AUGRABIES FALLS NATIONAL PARK Augrabies Falls National Park
The Augrabies National Park, 120km from Upington, is a landscape with an ancient feel that takes you back to the world of the first hunter gatherers who roamed this terrain several thousands of years ago. Like many reserves in the Northern Cape, a trip here is a showcase of rare, unique and often truly bizarre plants and animals that have adapted to some fairly harsh conditions. Guided tours will take you into the heart of this world, so keep your voice down and an eye out for leopards, jackals, African wild cats and Klipspringers. And you can’t leave here without experiencing the 56m thunderous Augrabies falls, or a 360-degree view of this intriguing reserve from the top of the giant Moon Rock.

The Kalahari Meerkat Project opens its doors to visitors every Sunday, offering you an exclusive chance to get up close and personal with these fascinating and mischievous creatures in their natural environment. On other days, the project studies the behaviour of the Kalahari’s most likeable residents, discovering more and more all the time about their behaviour, the habits and rules of ‘meerkat society’.

SUTHERLAND NIGHT SKY Situated 360 km from Cape Town along the N1 and R354
There’s simply nothing more magical than to look up from the earth to a sky packed with billions of stars, to see the incredible winking lights of the galaxy fill every single space in the night sky. There aren’t many places on this earth where you will see more stars than in the crystal clear air of semi-desert region around Sutherland. Be sure to pack your binoculars or a telescope for even more amazing views, however if you find yourself without one, the non-existent light pollution in this sparsely-populated area turns the night sky into a theatre of lights that will take root in your memories.
NAMAQUALAND FLOWERS A three-hour journey up the N7 from Cape Town
Every spring, the arid land in the Namaqualand National Park comes to life in the most incredible way when the Namaqualand daisies make this landscape their own. Come see an unbelievable composition of never-ending blue skies and deserts in contrast to an explosion of bright orange flowers that blanket hills and valleys as far as the eye can see. But, don’t just stand and stare. Get out and walk through these fields of flowers, pick some of South Africa’s famous daisies for yourself, take in a smell you’ll never forget and maybe drop down to make some ‘daisy angels’ with only the blue sky above for company. This ecological phenomenon is uniquely inspiring, and the millions of photos you pack your camera with may never tell the full story.

THE RICHTERSVELD HALFMENS Alexander Bay, Northern Cape
In the mirage-like landscape of the Northern Cape, the Richtersveld National Park is a natural gift to the world, preserving its unbelievable diversity of rare succulent plants and indigenous wildlife. This mountainous desert contains some of the strangest and most fascinating terrains filled with stories of prehistoric animals and people who survived in these conditions for thousands of years. A guided hike or drive into this reserve is one of the most different and special safari journeys in the world. A true highlight is the site of the bizarre and ever-present halfmens plants, the name translating to ‘half person’. These tall cacti-like trees, endemic to the area, are said to resemble people from a distance, inspiring centuries-old mythology. The San believed these plants to be their ancestors who were turned into halfmens by the gods as an act of sympathy to relieve their suffering in the harsh climate.
FLY FISHING KIMBERLEY Lilydale Rest Camp in the Mokala National Park, approximately 70km from Kimberley
Fly-fishing is a great way to get out into the beautiful Northern Cape landscape and spend a day in a wild, natural setting, even if you’ve never tried it before. The rivers around Kimberley boast some of the best conditions for the sport, with abundant populations of yellow fish and other indigenous species inhabiting the clear waters of the lower Vaal and Riet rivers. One prime spot is the Lilydale Rest Camp in the Mokala National Park, 70km outside Kimberley. This region, with its wildlife-rich environment, is worth the trip alone, even if you don’t manage to catch that elusive trophy fish.

Get a taste of some local culture around Kimberley with a guided tour visit to the friendly township of Galeshewe, and share a drink and a couple of laughs with some quirky locals. This hub of culture and activity made its significant mark on South Africa’s history during the days of apartheid, with its contributions towards the anti-apartheid struggle. One of the popular stops on the township tour is the Mayibuye Uprising Memorial, commemorating some of the most significant anti-apartheid protests that stemmed from this area.
RIEMVASMAAK HOT SPRINGS Located in a deep ravine bordered by 80m-high granite cliffs, north of the Augrabies Falls, about 60km from the small Northern Cape town of Kakamas. The Riemvasmaak Hot Springs is one of the Northern Cape’s prime attractions, and there is little wonder why. Situated in Riemvasmaak, it’s an area known for its desert mountains and landscapes that can only be described as lunar-like. The springs themselves are the product of ancient volcanic activity that still heats the water today. Lodged deep in a dramatic ravine, bordered by towering 80m-high cliffs, these beautiful baths are a stunning setting for a relaxing soak. For a weekend of pure escape, and something a little different, book yourself into unique self-catering chalets that blend into the rocky cliffs. When you’re not wading in the steamy water don’t miss out on the chance to explore the area, with hikes and 4x4 trails through this unusual terrain. Make sure you bring a water bottle – it gets pretty hot out there! And keep a look out for the dassies (a Cape or rock hyrax) scurrying the rocks or soaring raptors and fish eagles overhead.

It epitomises the uniquely Limpopo safari landscape that travellers come looking for. Dominating views in this park is the beautiful Kransberg, with its distinctive cliffs glowing deep rose and peach colours in the rising or setting sun. This extraordinary formation is also home to the world’s largest colony of Cape vultures, making a drive to the top a uniquely memorable wildlife experience. The combination of mountain views, bushveld panoramas and African wildlife, including the Big Five, makes this park a paradise for wildlife photography or just soaking up an authentic African safari.

NYLSVLEY WETLANDS
KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
Nylsvley Nature Reserve, Limpopo
Kruger National Park, Limpopo
The Nylsvley Nature Reserve is not only spectacular, but it is also an important area for birdlife in the country. Every three to four years, peak flood levels attract up to 80,000 birds to these wetlands, taking up temporary residence in the floodplains. The name itself has a story: in the 19th century one of the major wetland floods led the pioneering Voortrekkers to think that they had actually reached the famous Nile River – and they named the area for it. This is an astounding place to learn about South Africa’s birdlife and fascinating wetland ecosystems that support so many diverse creatures. Make sure you’ve got a good pair of binoculars slung around your neck when you set out, because you will find yourself constantly gazing through them, whether on game drives, wetland tours or the many walking trails in the area.
HOEDSPRUIT ENDANGERED SPECIES CENTRE Kapama Private Game Reserve, Hoedspruit, 0015 Nestled in the heart of the Kapama Private Game Reserve, the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) is home to some of the most endangered species of animals on the continent. A visit to the centre is an inspiring day trip that brings you into the world of the people who commit their lives to saving these animals and to learn about conservation efforts as well as the ongoing threats faced by South Africa’s wildlife.
43341_4_WT South Africa_Book Folder.indd 107
The world-renowned Kruger National Park gives you the ultimate taste of the South African wildlife experience. Stretching 350km from south to north, along the Mozambican border, it is home to the finest, most diverse wildlife on the continent. There’s nothing more exciting than waking up just before sunrise and setting off on a game drive into this iconic South African reserve. In moments, the world outside this place is long forgotten, as the gentle rambling of the game vehicle takes you deeper and deeper into the heart of the South African bush and the untamed kingdom of the famous Big Five.
MAGOEBASKLOOF Magoebaskloof Pass, Northern Drakensberg Mountains
Known as the ‘Land of the Silver Mist’, Magoebaskloof is a lush forested area in the mist belt of the northern Drakensberg Mountains. The most memorable views of the area are found along the twists and bends of the Magoebaskloof Pass, the steepest mountain pass in South Africa, towering over 600m will have you on edge, literally. It is a drive well worth taking, with incredible sights around almost every corner, spectacular viewing points, waterfalls and roadside stalls along the way. Stick around in the Village of Haenertsburg, because this area has plenty more adventure to offer, including one of the most exhilarating canopy tours in the country over the nearby Letaba River Gorge.

Some of the stars of the route are the Three Rondavels at the huge Blyde River Canyon, and a view from God’s Window that’s just… well the name says it all. The escarpment is one amazing expression of nature that also has more waterfalls tumbling from its edge than any part of South Africa, most notably the magnificent Berlin Falls and Mac-Mac Falls. For a real sense of geological history in the area, the Sudwala Caves, formed over a period of 3000 million years… (yes that’s a real number) takes you beyond ‘prehistoric’ with tours through gigantic caverns or narrow sequences and tunnels, depending on how brave you are!

HOT-AIR BALLOONING IN SABIE Hazyview, Mpumalanga
With panoramas of this scale, there’s possibly no better way to experience them than a view shared with the birds from a hot-air balloon. If ever there was an excuse to get up just before sunrise, this is it. The flight starts as the sun begins to peek over the horizon, rising over some of the most striking scenery in South Africa. The balloon will fly anywhere from treetop level to 1000ft, with incredible views of the Sabie River Valley and the mind-boggling cliffs, peaks and forests of the escarpment. The pilots often prefer to fly low to let the passengers spot wildlife from this unusual vantage point. After this surreal flight, it’s time to celebrate with a glass of crisp sparkling wine and orange juice at the landing site before taming a wild appetite with a breakfast feast to complete the unforgettable experience.

QUAD BIKING IN SABIE Along the bubbling Sabie River
Feeling a little adventurous? Take on the terrain with a quad bike trail into the scenic Sabie River Valley. Choose between two- or four-hour trails and go charging through miles of indigenous bush and plantations along the Sabie River on easy-todrive, semi-automatic quad bikes. This awesome group activity is as much about the thrill of the ride as it is about nature, with memorable views and many opportunities to stop and marvel at the major attractions and scenery along the way.

RIVER RAFTING IN THE OLIFANTS RIVER The Olifants and Steelpoort rivers
Here in ‘big-water’ county, white-water rafting is one of the most enticing outdoor activities. Rafting adventures down the Olifants River take you through your full range of emotions – from screaming with delight in moments on stampeding rapids, to stretches of tranquillity while drifting alongside some of Mpumalanga’s most beautiful riverside views. These trips are more than a whirlwind tourist experience, lasting one to three days, they give you a chance to truly see and understand the natural setting, learning about wildlife and ecosystems along the way. Of course, it wouldn’t be Mpumalanga if this trip wasn’t filled with wildlife sightings, both in the water and along the banks and overhanging trees. This is a memorable activity to take on as a group, a great way to bond while sharing the stories of each day over a meal or around a campfire when the sun goes down.
GORGE SWINGING IN GRASKOP Graskop, Hazyview/Bushbuckridge Road, Mpumalanga
The Graskop’s gorge swing is a brilliant adrenalinepumping adventure activity on the South African map. In the very heart of the Panorama Route, the inspiring views of the gorge are a delight for the eyes, but, that doesn’t make it any less scary. Adrenaline junkies will simply lap it up, tip-toeing out onto a tiny platform and marvelling at the dramatic view before taking a 68m freefall, and an arching swing through the gorge. If you’re looking for more to get the adrenaline flowing, there’s an equally exhilarating zip line experience across the gorge that has you flying at breakneck speed for 130m, at 80m above the bottom of the gorge, with the wind screaming in your ears.

PARAGLIDING FROM LONE TREE HILL, BARBERTON Lone Tree Hill, Barberton
Barberton is one of the planet’s most important natural science areas, attracting geologists and biologists from all over the world to study the ancient Makhonjwa Mountains and the secrets to Earth’s beginnings. It is here, among the beautifully preserved ancient rocks, that some of Earth’s earliest life forms are said to have begun. At 425m above Barberton, Lone Tree Hill is the perfect launch pad for a truly unique paragliding experience. Seeing some of the world’s oldest mountain formations and the very rocks where Earth’s earliest life began is an experience in itself, but to soar over them in pure silent flight takes this experience to a whole new level of incredible. The gold-mining town of Barberton is an attraction on its own, with its rich prospecting history making it a worthwhile stay and a good place from which to book and organise your paragliding adventure.
PANORAMA ROUTE Drakensberg Escarpment region of eastern Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga’s famous Panorama Route takes you exploring along the most spectacular section of South Africa’s Great Escarpment. For many, this route is defined by the moment they step to the edge of the most famous viewing point of them all, called God’s Window. From here your eyes sprint to the horizon, in every possible direction, to absorb views of 700m cliffs, epic valleys, dense forests, the Kruger National Park below and the Lebombo Mountains of Mozambique in the far distance. It’s the type of view that stuns crowds into pure wondrous silence. This view is just one part of a spell-binding route that also features the extraordinary Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Mac-Mac Falls on the way. Embarking on the Panorama Route is as easy as following the signs and driving yourself from sight to sight, or letting an expert take you on an informative journey through this natural paradise on a guided tour.

BLYDE RIVER CANYON The northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment
The Blyde River Canyon (also called the Motlatse Canyon) is a staggering geological formation – one of the truly unmissable attractions on Mpumalanga’s Panorama Route. Viewing points perch you high above the world’s largest green canyon, with its unbelievable cliffs, formations and gorges carved out through millions of years of natural events. Panning your head across majestic scenes, it’s impossible to know where or on what to rest your eyes in this canyon of staggering beauty. Some of the most iconic sights are the huge spiral dolomite towers called the Three Rondavels, or the Pinnacle, which is an immense quartzite column rising straight up out of the deep canyon. The Blyde River Canyon Reserve preserves the ecosystems around this miracle of nature, with plenty of chances to spot dassies (hyrax), monkeys, baboons and klipspringers in the dense vegetation as well as crocodiles and hippos in the wetlands of the Swadini Dam at the base of the canyon.
RHINO WALKING SAFARI Kruger National Park
You’ve never done a safari like this before. Deep in the world-famous Kruger National Park, and immersed in raw nature, a rhino walking safari brings you face to face with the wild in an intimate walking experience. For a real African bush feel, book into an authentic safari tent at the Rhino Walking Safari Plains Camp, and spend three days lodged in the very middle of this wild environment. When dawn arrives, the chorus of animals from the nearby waterhole will signal the start of your daily trek. Setting out, your armed guide will lead a small group into the reserve, discussing animal tracks, pointing out special natural sights and animals, while filling your head with remarkable knowledge of the bush and bringing you skin-tingling close to its wild residents, including imposing rhinos.

PILGRIM’S REST Pilgrimsrest, 1290
Preserved as a National Monument since 1986, Pilgrim’s Rest isn’t just a history experience – it’s more like a time machine. The town is a vibrant living monument to the feverish gold rush of the late 19th Century, with its historical buildings and sights taking you right back to a time when the town was swarming with gold prospectors and other characters lured here by dreams of a golden fortune. Walking the streets you can almost feel the frenetic energy of the day, where garter-snapping barmaids, good-time gals, thieves, diggers and prospectors from all walks of life packed bars in the strange little town. Feel free to move through the town in whichever direction you want, stepping into original buildings and museums as well as antique, craft and curio shops on course. For lunch, pull up a chair in a historic hotel or grab a drink at a bar where rounds of drinks might once have been covered by a gold nugget thrown onto the counter.
KGHODWANA CULTURAL VILLAGE
The brightly coloured Ndebele people with their iconic beadwork and homes, exploding with striking patterns and colours are among the most recognisable symbols of South Africa’s cultural diversity. To immerse yourself in this culture, take a visit to the Kghodwana Cultural Village in Mpumalanga’s cultural heartland. Here you can look back into a 1000 years of Ndebele history in this open-air living museum of culture and vivid colour. Admire the geometric artwork on huts and walls, or the distinctive colourful clothing and beadwork worn by the locals, and stop to buy some world-famous Ndebele bracelets, necklaces, woven mats and gala blankets. To see a culture expressed so boldly and authentically and to see these traditions preserved in villages like this is a real treat and a valuable experience for South Africans and international visitors alike.

BULGARI COMES TO SOUTH AFRICA Bulgari, the world-renowned Italian Jewellery Maison, has delighted lovers of fine gems with its latest announcement – the opening of its first monobrand boutique in Johannesburg. Bulgari’s rare, brilliant and bold pieces will be available at the new flagship location in Johannesburg’s premier shopping destination, Sandton City. The design of the new boutique follows on from two of Bulgari’s flagship stores – its historical location in Rome and its brand new London store, which opened in New Bond Street earlier this year. The global retail experience was designed by the lauded US architect Peter Marino and the store in South Africa will echo the grandeur of his work. Countless hours and numerous luxurious materials have gone into perfecting every detail of this magnificent structure. The Roman store was informed by over 2700 years of local history, with carefully curated elements of bronze, marble and wood. The Peter Marino signature concept has created an architectural identity for the brand, which draws on its Mediterranean origins and Roman traditions, emphasising what is at heart a classic Italian approach to modernity. And this is the key to the new destination boutique in Sandton. Marino’s designs are famous for achieving a fine balance between the ancient and the new – evoking the glamour and luxury of the 1950s and 60s and Bulgari’s long-time association with such icons of the period as Elizabeth Taylor, while also utilising the latest innovations in materials and architectural processes. The first example of this is the 100-square metre store façade where the Black Grand Antique marble and Travertino Navona columns frame the entrance and the four cream and saffron coloured windows. The marble, which express the brand’s heritage and Italian origin, alternates with another brand signature, the Star Skin pattern, in which the origami tiles, in the various gold tones of Bulgari jewels, fold into a starred pattern. Bulgari jewels are highly recognisable and infused with the passion of Italian design, masterful goldsmithing and artisanal techniques. Clients can now explore the exceptional artistry of Bulgari in Sandton City. Shop U28A/B, Diamond Walk, Sandton City, Johannesburg.
