A Word from the Editor

You might have gathered that we are quite a sociable bunch over at the Cross Productions’ HQ, Niche Towers. We are known to have held an event or two over the past four years, right now we’re about to go into turbo mode, our diaries are like a patchwork quilt of appointments, meetings, and you guessed it events. Here’s a quick round up, you’ll find more information in the magazine too. March 9th sees Niche Networking at Maison Interiors in Oadby, our bi-monthly evening business meeting. March 13th is when our MD, Jenny Cross, jets off to MIPIM in Cannes as part of Team Leicestershire and representing Building Connections. April 6th we are looking forward to ‘Half-way Around the World in 40 Gins’ at award winning venue North Bar & Kitchen. Easter - chocfest, whilst May kicks off on 4th with Family Business Dinner at Sturgess Jaguar, hotly followed by Inspirational Women in Business at St Martins House 5th 10am-2pm. A rather exciting venue for May Niche Networking, we’re pitching up at the Woodside RSPCA Centre on 11th May. The Kube will be prepping for the very first Cross Connections Business Expo which is for one day only, 19th May. June 21st we’ll be hurtling along a special zip-wire on Victoria Park in support of local charity, Alex’s Wish! We’ll also be shaking Alex’s tin on the Friday night as they are one of the 10 chosen charities for our Great Leicestershire Charity Ball, 23rd June, The Kube, Leicester Racecourse. Shall I stop now? Just one more then, it is the jewel in the crown and it’s not until 8th September, the Niche Business Awards evening dinner presentation night again promises to deliver against a bar already loftily set. #NicheBizAwards In this issue of Niche you’ll see some stunning photography right from the front cover image, we particularly love the dramatic fashion shoot this issue, very grateful to Leicester Cathedral for the lend of their grand premises – we hope you like this too. You will also notice a feature on three local achievers, young dynamic individuals all making a name for themselves in their given fields, very inspiring to work with those driven by passion. We also hear from some of our regular contributors on fashion, health, beauty, interiors, law and the workplace. You can book on to any of our events via our website at nichemagazine.co.uk Hope to see you soon,

TATTOOING Leicester Body art is booming – Leicester tattoo artist Tom Mackow explains how he was lured by the industry The art of tattooing has been around since ancient times and practiced across the globe by a diverse range of civilisations. Throughout history, tattoos have had many connotations and associations from tribal hierarchies to American sailors and now, you read this article in our fashion section. The popularity of tattoos has risen as celebrities are papped showing off their latest ink, which has altered the outlook society has on the art form. Today, Leicester’s established and sought after tattooist Tom Mackow is in the process of opening his own tattoo studio with the promise of continuing his much-loved work in the black and grey realist style that local tattoo seekers have come to know him for. He was destined to fulfil his dream job as he has always been drawn towards a more creative path. As a child, it wasn’t an astronaut or a truck driver that Tom aspired to be, he single-mindedly wanted to be a tattoo artist. “It’s always been about tattoos. I would always be drawing on my arms as a kid,” Tom told us. Pushing his dream aside to take up a ‘proper’ career and head to university; he fuelled his creative flare by taking up a product design degree. Feeling unsatisfied after

his graduation, he became an electrician but if there was one person who wasn’t going to let him give up on his dream, it was his Dad. He told Tom to buy a professional tattoo machine he’d seen advertised in the paper and since then, the 23-year-old has never looked back. “I used to practise on my mates,” said Tom. Having seen his artwork and knowing what their artistic friend was capable of, they were more than willing to host inked artwork by the budding tattooist. After lots of practise, he was hired by Alan Potter at Enderby’s Addictive Art in April 2016. Tom commented: “Alan made it happen for me and gave me a chance to do what I loved.” Just a year later the artist has achieved his dream and will be opening his first shop. Look out for Sacred Corium on Welford Road, Leicester. The first 20 clients to quote ‘Niche’ will receive 20% off their next tattoo! Text, call, email or contact Tom on social media to get your discount now. FB: Tom Mack Tattoo Instagram: tommacktattoo sacredcorium@gmail.com 07714 736 007

Those in the Fashion Industry have their say

A season for colour, florals and stripes The new season is soon upon us. Spring/summer 2017 and how exciting it is! The power of pink is seen everywhere from pretty shades of pink in demure dresses to shocking fuchsia, and if pink isn’t your colour then there’s plenty more to choose from. The biggest rule of this season is colour and plenty of it! If you’ve never worn bold colours before why not give it a try? Accessories are fabulous if you want to bring colour to an outfit. This way you can introduce colour without it being too overwhelming to start with. Strategically placing a feature colour on a neutral canvas can really create an outfit that gets noticed for the right reasons. If you love colour then this is your season. Florals are in full bloom not just in nature but on the catwalk head to toe, I love a good 70s floral blouse teamed with denim during the sunshine months. Denim again as year after year will become a staple part of your wardrobe this spring/summer and you’ll find floods of it across the high street in all forms. Not a floral fan? Then we have the stripe for you! From seaside to school stripes were all over the SS17 catwalks in every beautiful form you could imagine. I particularly loved the pinstripes at Mulberry. An easy one to mix into your summer work wear wardrobe. Sukhina Garcia Betty Brown Boutique info@betty-brown.com 16 | NICHE

Sartorial style

Desk to disco

The spring time is an awkward time to dress for some people, there are extremes of weather but that means your fashion choices don’t need to be. Layering is a great way to beat the British climate. A polo shirt, with a lightweight sweater and a bomber style jacket is a look that is strong at the minute.

If you’re a busy professional who spends half your life working at your desk and the other half attending business meetings and events, you’ll know the struggle of achieving versatile hair that can take you from one appointment to the other. Or maybe your fastpaced work life means that you rush from work, to your dinner date, to drinks with your friends with little time to spare.

The utility shirt look is making waves and can also be used in the spring to keep warm enough, but not too much so. Teamed with denim it’s a style classic. For a smarter look the colour this season and going forward into summer is bright blue for suits, Hugo Boss are nailing this – check out the Niche fashion shoot. You’ll see this trend flourish as it’s perfect for day wear and can be spruced for a more classic event, such as a wedding. Slim cuts are still popular with the younger man, a more relaxed tailored version suits an older frame. Lighter colour blazers are also making a seasonal entrance, with a checked or plaid design. These can be worn with denim again or a contrasting slim-fit chino and white shirt. If you’ve still had no inspiration for a spring time freshen up of your wardrobe, feel free to pop in to our store our staff are experienced stylists and can help choose a look that’s just you. It’s all about minimal time and minimal fuss! For easy, heatless waves, go to work with your hair in a French plait and by the end of the day, you’ll be left with beautiful texture and effortless curls. To add a little interest, pin the sides for a romantic look and add volume to the roots with your favourite dry shampoo. It’s always a good idea to keep a go-to product in your desk drawer. Dry shampoo is perfect as it refreshes your look, giving it a lease of life with a good dose of texture and volume. It’s important to make sure your hair is in good condition if you want it to be low-maintenance, so a good athome shampoo, conditioner and treatment regime will keep your hair looking disco-ready 24/7. However, treating yourself to a blow-dry or up-do with Barrie Stephen Hair on your lunch break is the ultimate pamper and the sure-fire way to have gorgeous hair during your busiest business days. Relax and leave it to the professionals! Book in at your nearest salon and let one of our stylists take you from desk to disco. Barrie Stephen 0116 402 6222 barriestephenhair.co.uk

Health & Beauty By this point in the year, the health and fitness resolutions you made in January may be dwindling – but fear not

Personal Trainer Lizzie Griffin gives away a top tip to make your workouts much easier and more enjoyable

Benefits with Friends Meet Lizzie

I’m a fully certified personal trainer who specialises in creating nutrition and training programmes, and enabling my clients to achieve amazing and life changing results. But you’ve heard all this before right? Well, I’m experienced with over nine years in the fitness industry and I’m excited to show you what you can achieve!

At Griffin Fit we offer private one to one and group training sessions for up to 10 people. We also give you tailored meal plans, unlimited nutrition coaching, free aftercare, a choice of a gym photoshoot or spa day, the opportunity to be client of the month, discounts at George’s Hairdressing, an invitation to our private Facebook group and invites to our social events.

With a little help from your friends How group training affects your body brains and behaviour

1 4

Checking in with each other will increase motivation

It’s harder to cancel going to the gym when you have someone counting on you

3

You’ll have more fun and will finally be able to try out some of those couple workouts you’ve seen on Facebook

4 5

Healthy competition will make you work harder

It’s more affordable to have a personal trainer as part of a group

6

They’ll be your cheerleader, teammate and coach when Lizzie’s not around

How incredible it would feel to be so motivated that you’re able to train for longer, burn more calories throughout the day and actually want to visit the gym. Well, Lizzie Griffin believes that everyone is capable of being this sort of person! She says all it takes is to simply add something extra special to the mix, a friend! She encourages partnering up and visiting the gym in small groups for your workouts since she has seen many of her clients thrive and benefit in multiple ways using this method in the private space of her Griffin Fit gym. This is why she’s introduced group training inviting anyone to come along on their own or with a friend to join in with a like-minded community and generate more social aspects to fitness and health. “Some people can be reluctant to workout with others because they might feel embarrassed or lack confidence even around close friends and family,” Lizzie said. “But the reality is people will naturally push themselves harder when training with other people. Even the most self-conscious among us will surprise themselves at how capable and competitive they are when they have someone beside them.” Sixty-four per cent of women who attend classes with their friends have been proven to push themselves harder than if they went alone, according to a study

commissioned by health club Virgin Active. Other studies have shown that anyone who fitness trains with the support of one or more people also gains a strong sense of community, has more fun at the gym, and enjoys the benefits of this on their mental wellbeing as well as physical. By creating a community between a small group, the individuals will help each other to strive towards each of their goals. Exercise benefits our bodies, brains and behaviour. The body part is obvious, we know it helps prevent illnesses and gets us into shape but our brains and behaviour are stimulated in positive ways too. Our brains have been said to improve in functions such as memory and the processing of information with the aid of exercise. Our behaviour alters to a more positive and confident outlook as we see our bodies changing for the better. As well as this, some cool science stuff happens in our brains to make us feel happier and experience a drop in stress levels and anxiety. “Every one of us will experience a huge amount of benefits from working out. Add some of your best mates into the mix and you’ve got yourself the perfect recipe for a whole load of other great stuff that can happen! Or, join in on our small group sessions and make new friends and a sense of community.” Training with others has a great impact on your life socially. Quite often we find ourselves with little or no time to meet up with friends and family members when we have so many other things going on in our lives. Running a business, taking care of the kids, overtime at work, lack of sleep and many other responsibilities can all hinder our ability to make time for real valuable socialising.

But going to the gym with those you care about, or by meeting new friends this way, you’ll kill two birds with one stone – and some! You’ll have a laugh while you get fit and healthy and all this extra exercise you’re doing will work wonders for your brain power, making you more efficient at decision making and completing tasks. Plus you will likely get a better night sleep too. Having workout buddies increases the chances of sticking at your attempts to achieve your goals for longer. Lizzie insisted: “Just having the responsibility of helping out a friend who is relying on you to support them with your mere presence at the gym will make sure you don’t let them down, and in turn, you won’t let yourself down. After all, you don’t want to feel unhealthy and guilty, do you?” Griffin Fit’s new group training programmes leave you with no excuse! Head to Lizzie’s gym on Oakland Road and let her show you how it’s done. She’ll tailor nutrition and workout programmes for each unique individual in your squad and be on hand to ask any questions. Join and benefit from being part of the Griffin Fit community!

What is Microdermabrasion? As we age, the automatic process of exfoliation and cell renewal slows down. Sometimes the body needs a little help. Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure in which the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. The removal of the dead skin cells reveals the softer more youthful looking skin cells underneath. The superficial abrasion of the skin also triggers the body’s own natural repair mechanism which triggers the production of new collagen and releases glycoaminoglycans in order to rehydrate and replenish the recently abraded area. This has a remarkable softening action on surface lines and wrinkles.

Feeling bikini ready? Soon enough we will be turning our thoughts to getting beach body ready and for most of us the thought fills us with dread, doesn’t it? Well, it needn’t, not with some of the highly advanced treatments available these days. Here are a couple of our favourite treatments to get your body looking its best, ready to hit the beach this summer. Radio Frequency is first on the list. A non-invasive treatment which helps to tighten up any loose skin and cellulite making it a particular favourite for those getting ready to bring out the swimsuits. Whether for arms, the abdominal area, buttocks or legs the treatment promotes healthy collagen production, something which diminishes in our skin as we get older, and therefore a smoother look. Lipomassage is another great non-invasive treatment which shapes your body and reduces that pesky cellulite. The targeted actions produce fast results even on those stubborn bits, plus it’s all pain free and actually pleasant for the client. A motorised device with two adjustable rollers and controlled suction creates a symmetrical skin-fold and as the fat layer decreases through this specialised process, the blood flow and lymphatic drainage increases diminishing cellulite build up. These treatments are fantastic ways of getting ready for the summer months whether you are beach bound or simply looking to feel better in those shorter hem lines. Inside Meesha’s skincare cabinet I change my skincare according to the season so here are my current spring essentials. For cleansing I reach for my Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel which is packed with natural essential nutrients including a host of vitamins and is a powerful little gel which kicks off my skincare routine perfectly. Next up comes toning and I love ila Spa Hydrolat Toner which is hydrating and, contrary to popular belief, your skin still needs hydration during the warmer months, I adore anything with rose water and this is no exception. Your skin is still in need of a nice oil too and de Mamiel Spring Oil is my go-to, it’s completely Organic and filled with botanical extracts, vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids. For a day moisturiser, I look to ila Spa Renewed Recovery Day Cream which provides a light blend of rare ingredients for a replenishing effect throughout the day. For evenings, I usually apply Odacite Radiance Effect Serum first which provides an extra opportunity for radiance – and who can resist that? Then comes the real star of the show, the Elemental Herbology Vital Glow Overnight Resurfacing Cream, which does exactly as its title suggests. I use ila Spa Face Scrub which gives my face an energetic lift and Oskia’s Renaissance Mask once a week as part of my pampering evening.

Self-belief We all arrive in this world with no preconceived beliefs and no sense of what you can or can’t do. But as we grow, others teach you to limit yourself. There’ll be parental and cultural imprints layered on you consistently. Mostly, the imprint will be positive but sometimes it’s detrimental to your entire wellbeing. Without realising, these negative imprints stop you achieving so much. So how can you change it? ONE Believe in yourself, look at the horizon and see that it, like you, has no limitations. TWO Listen to that inner voice, don’t be scared of it, confront it, challenge it, and when it’s negative, who does it sound like? A parent, teacher sibling, friend? You can be sure the inner critic you hear was not yours originally! THREE By focussing on what isn’t good about you rather than what is, you miss opportunities. Recognise a weakness and flip it into a strength. Stubbornness = single-minded determination! FOUR Develop your superpowers! Every morning think of your positive qualities. Priming your mind first thing will fix your behaviour and intention for the day.

All my favourites are available in store. Meesha Kanadia

FIVE Create a powerful vision in which you write that book, start a business, relax socially. It’s not a race, you aren’t competing with anyone. Obstacles in your path actually teach you lessons. Believe it and achieve it! Priti Coles

At David Lloyd Clubs we aim to provide the latest state of the art equipment for our members. This is why we are proud ambassadors of Boditrax technology. This medically approved body composition analyser helps to manage weight loss, increase fitness levels and support your goals with scans that accurately read your body composition.

Boditrax measures and categorises weight into body fat mass, fat free mass, bone mass and total body water, all in a matter of seconds. Users can track changes and trace movement for long term health management. So instead of stepping onto the scales to find out how much you weigh, come and find out exactly what your body is made up of and what should be your areas of concern. Whether it’s your visceral fat percentage (around your organs) or your metabolic age, Boditrax will help you on the way to changing your body, health and confidence for the better.

The new colour trend If you’re talking colour, the new word on the block is contouring. This new concept offers a bespoke combination of colour designed to enhance your hairstyle and face shape. Round To elongate your face, you need brightness and lightness at the top and around the front of the hair. Applying richer, darker tones around the ears and ends will add depth. Oval This shape is the most versatile and we bring out different features of your face by adding depth, texture and shine. Oblong To widen, we apply darker tones to the roots and along the parting, fading into lighter tones from the ears and below. Square Adding multi tones around all of the hair, but with a slightly deeper shade at the four corners of your face can make it appear slimmer and more contoured. Heart We add lighter tones around the jaw line to soften it. Deeper toned slices are then added through the top of the hair. Treat yourself To enhance your coloured or natural hair, we have a range of System Professional treatments from Wella. From an express treatment, to a lingering, luxurious scalp massage.

Cosmetic Surgery My Journey

Bilateral Breast Augmentation PART 2

Saturday 29 May th

I woke up feeling extremely tired, found it difficult to lift my arms, and struggled to eat. I was worried as I couldn’t imagine making it home today. I was given antibiotics through my drip to prevent infection and a course of disgusting-tasting oral antibiotics. Getting dressed felt as if my chest was going to fall off! Mr Sankar visited me before I was discharged but I felt my breasts were pointy and not right. He assured me that they would change. My walk to the car was very delicate and the seat belt was uncomfortable. I went out for dinner for my nephew’s 18th birthday but felt very tired and tearful.

Post-op diary entries of Jessica – a patient of Nuffield Hospital’s Cosmetic Surgeon Mr Sankar

Monday 3rd July Feeling absolutely chuffed to bits with Mr Sankar’s handy work. I had such a different shopping experience this year due to my new shape. What a great birthday!

A new beginning Cosmetic surgery should not be entered into lightly. It’s not only the physical limitations but also your emotional status you should be aware of during your recovery.

Thursday 3rd June Sat in the garden and because of lack of sensitivity after the op I sun-burnt the top of my boob. I managed to make dinner for the first time and cut down to two painkillers three times a day.

Saturday 5th June Check-up with Mr Sankar. He removed my tape and said everything is as it should be. Showered for the first time – heaven! My chest still feels heavy and painful after moving. I have odd sharp shooting pains in my chest, which Mr Sankar said I would experience due to nerves repairing. People are commenting surprised at how great I look and that they really fit my frame as they expected some Jordan-type image!

Monday 7th June My right boob has a deep dull pain which increases with each deep

this time! And I have a cleavage! Never achieved this before without a Wonderbra and two pairs of socks! Have been good sticking to Mr Sankar’s instructions with gentle walking every day increasing the pace as the week continues.

breath penetrating through to my shoulder. I have done too much today and feel really emotional. I’m finding it easier to look at them and am beginning to love my new look.

Saturday 12th June On my first day back to work I wore a baggy top so no-one would notice and felt conscious about anyone bumping into me. I went out for a surprise birthday meal today and felt uncomfortable the whole night. Frustrating that I can’t pick up my little boy and when he has a temper will pull my heart strings and hurt me.

Sunday 13th June Travelled to Devon. What a difference from the first journey home from hospital, not every bump in the road made me wince

My journey has been a successful one and it’s all due to the professionalism and care I received. I am so happy with my new image and it is with many thanks to Mr Sankar’s expertise that I can wear my clothes (or not) with confidence now! If I could go back to before the operation I would absolutely do it again.

Advice From Mr Sankar Any one wishing to have any cosmetic surgery should do their research first followed by consultation with surgeon more than once and sometimes with more than one surgeon before you make your decision. 0116 274 3718

Wedding

quality matters

For events where

Dimblebee Catering and unique events go hand in hand. The Leicester based multi-award winning outside caterers continue to serve up their trademark blend of trendsetting menus, friendly professional service and their high quality handmade style.

The food and service for any event is a major ingredient in its success and with over 1,500 events and 50,000 guests under their belt the Dimblebee Catering Company have established themselves the go-to caterers for weddings and events of any size, where quality and experience matters. Approved by many of the UK’s finest venues and household names across Leicestershire and the Midlands, Dimblebee Catering are also the specialist outside caterers for marquee, tipi or businesses events or even your own home! Dimblebee Catering are considered trailblazers when creating a menu for a special event, Dimblebee’s Chef Team shared with us some of the trends for weddings and events this summer.

Love story menus

From the outset we wanted to steer well clear of ‘package’ catering for many reasons but mainly as this would not provide our couples or clients with the

opportunity to infuse their menu and service with their own personal touches. Our high quality a la carte menus are all flexible and our bespoke ‘love-story’ menus are an enormous hit with couples wishing to add in ingredients or dishes that remind them of the things, times and places that they love.

It’s good to share

Whilst high quality formal banqueting is stunning when done properly, we also love the sharing trend! Food is better enjoyed in company and in a relaxed environment becomes the pleasure it ought to be. If you love a relaxed service and ‘family style’ dining what better than to have your guests sharing and talking or to have Dimblebee’s trade-mark Eton Messy™ and fun large sharing desserts processed out to the tables! Whatever your tastes Dimblebee Catering will add flair to any event this summer, call them today. 0116 283 3327 dimblebeecatering.co.uk

Wedding experts have their say

Countdown to Wedding Bells So, you have the ring (congratulations!) now it’s time to start the planning. Pinterest is a great place to start gathering your visual inspirations, the type of mood you want for your big day, but then a lovely good old fashioned note book is great for jotting down to do lists too. Here is my guide to prepping for the big day… 12 Months Ahead Scout your location. Book your date and start thinking about guest lists. Find a caterer if your venue doesn’t already have one, go ahead and see if you can sample some cakes too! 10 Months Now it’s time for the really fun bit! Dress and suit shopping. Start making and attending appointments at Bridal Boutiques. Now is also a good time to start sending out Save The Dates to your guests so sort the stationery too. 6 Months Order the bridal and groom party outfits. Get hen/stag planning. Send out the invites to the day itself. Choose your florist. Pick out any gifts you want for the wedding party. 3 Months Check in with everything you have booked/ordered. Get those beauty treatments booked!

Wedding Jewellery Lumbers is forward-thinking when it comes to jewellery and this is no exception with wedding jewellery. Dominic and his team take pride in showcasing eclectic and contemporary jewellery for all types of couple. Since moving to Leicester’s High Street, Lumbers has has been at the forefront of the wedding jewellery market. From our inhouse Brown and Newirth boutique for a bespoke feel through to our extensive pearl collection. Two gold wedding bands are traditional but these days couples are getting more audacious with their wedding rings and choosing to accessorise their outfits with distinct jewellery as well. In recent years, we’ve seen a surge in several trends. The call for vintage inspired rings, which has grown alongside the notable increase for vintage gowns. The revival of coloured stones such as yellow diamonds or blue sapphires. Stacked rings; these can be eternity style rings with stones all the way around, or simple metal bands. Two or three rings stacked together is a stylish, contemporary look. We must also recognise the timeless classic, pearl jewellery. Pearls have been associated with love and romance for over 3000 years and this stands firm today.

Catering expectations on your big day Entrusting your wedding catering to strangers can feel a little bit scary, can’t it? Do your research. As you start drawing up a shortlist for potential caterers and ‘Googling,’ look for the following indicators. Venue Approvals Most professional venues handpick and audit caterers before approving them and are probably one of the best indicators of a caterer’s standing and quality. The more grand the venue, the more stringent the approval process. Food Safety Rating Often overlooked, any commercial caterer must be registered, inspected and rated. Make sure their kitchen address is published and search online for their food safety rating. Visit Meet up with your potential caterers at their kitchen rather than at set up tasting events wherever possible. This will provide a valuable insight into how and where your food is prepared, what size they are, what resources they have in place and how the business is being managed. Pricing Quality has a price, if prices or package deals are cheap there will be a reason.

The Day Before RELAX! If you have selected reliable suppliers everything should be in hand! Try and get lots of beauty sleep and soak it all in. Emily Kirton

Whilst your wedding day can be seen to be the cornerstone of tradition, wedding jewellery is most certainly on the march and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Rob Jones

Taste test Once you pick your caterer, ask to meet up at their kitchens and sample a few dishes to get a real taste for the catering and to help define your menu choices – the proof is in the pudding so to speak! Simon Cox

Food & Drink

Feast on the best our county has to offer

In light of the flash floods in Spain at the end of last year, with their food exports at an alltime low more people and businesses are reaching for locally sourced produce than ever With so much emphasis in the media these days on the importance of choosing the right foods for us to enjoy optimum health, how important is it that we choose local produce? Well, it’s important for several reasons and here’s a short version of why. Better for the environment. By choosing to buy local, you are opting out of being part of the substantial carbon footprint it takes for food to make it to our plates. No air miles, limited lorry miles and then much less plastic wrapping. Buying local seriously improves your green credentials. Better for your health and taste buds. Local food will be fresher as it has not had as far to travel, there’s no shipping to supermarket warehouses to be packaged and sent to the shop floor after having been picked two weeks ago. Buying local often means buying produce that was made or picked just a few days ago, if that. 44 | NICHE

Better for the community and local economy. For farmers, makers and growers you buying their produce is the very best way to support them. If they have to sell to large corporations and supermarkets producers lose a lot of profit and control. Buying from markets and individual makers means you often meet face to face with the supplier enhancing a greater sense of community. Here in Leicestershire we are lucky enough to enjoy a growing number of exceptional food suppliers from fruit growers, cheese makers and even vineyards, it’s all right here for us locals to feast upon. There is a lot to be said in the joy of knowing the baker has been up in the night a few towns away creating your bread for you to eat fresher than fresh that same day. Then there’s the delight in knowing that the farmer has reared and prepared your roast dinner joint on the grass of our very countryside, that the vegetables to accompany grew from Leicestershire earth and

the wine from a vineyard not from the south of France but Rothley up the road. All of this is what contributes to that wonderful feeling of delight that you get as you lay out your picnic or supper filled with Melton Mowbray pork pies, Hambleton Bakery sourdough breads, Rutland Charcuteries cured meats and cheeses and Rothley Wines, all of which are local, high quality and best of all it tastes all the better than the rest for it. These gastronomic delights can also be happily enjoyed across the county in our restaurants, hotels and caterers who all embrace our local makers including city centre hotel and restaurant Hotel Maiyango, the newly opened Abbots Oak hotel and venue and Dimblebee Catering Ltd for events across the county. There are too many to mention, but the point is they are backing the amazing produce from highly skilled makers and suppliers right on their doorstep, just like us.

The fruity feta salad starter had a luscious selection of feta chunks, watermelon, mango, honeydew melon, pomegranate and olives. Each juicy fruit was a perfect match for the salty feta. After reading about the dish that helped create The Angels celebrated name, it would have been rude not to order the Little Moneybag. It was a textured mix of salmon, halibut, cod, prawns and scallops with garlic, tomato and shellfish sauce that brought out the freshness of the seafood inside the parcel. The penne pasta was cooked to a pleasing almost-al-dente firmness

with soft, brandy-infused, butternut squash and tasty field mushrooms. The beef was a perfect pink in the middle surrounded by a thick browned edge that fell apart at the touch. It was served over mushrooms and shallots, along with salted spinach, moreish spiced herby mash, and rich, sweet, thin gravy. In the morning, the full Yorkshire breakfast was mouth-watering. A buffet with all the usual’s; cereal, fruit, and toast had a familiar Angel twist to make it their own. developing the city Post-Brexit: how one construction company is thriving It was all doom and gloom when the UK voted to leave the EU on June 23rd last year but the ONS latest statistics revealed that December saw the output of our main construction sectors increase by 1.8 per cent since November 2016 adding to UK economy. 52 | NICHE

The soaring success and popularity of local company Premier Development Contractors Ltd. are proof that the British building trade is not just surviving but thriving post-Brexit. The company provides a range of professionally managed contracting and construction

services to private and commercial sectors. Leicester based, they operate throughout Leicestershire and the East Midlands with expert localised knowledge. Their triumph is perhaps due to their efforts to consistently provide an

exemplary, reliable, well-informed, proactive level of service regardless of contract value. Achieving the best practice through continuous improvements, their professional project managers are overseen and trained by chartered architects to ensure only the best building techniques are implemented. The architectural professionals who run Premier established the company in 2012 after their all-too-frequent experiences with businesses lacking in-depth construction knowledge and achievable efficiency solutions. Since its inception, the firm have taken on projects from both commercial and domestic arena fulfilling all kinds of briefs from extensions to new builds and worked with businesses big and small from local chip shops to the famous King Power Stadium. Currently, the company operates from its own 20,000 sq. ft. industrial unit, servicing jobs with their own vehicles, thus controlling delivery of work and saving costs on labour wastages as well as building a series of 40,000 sq. ft. commercial and industrial office space. Premier also operates a bespoke apartment showroom located in their head office in Hamilton for clients to view and choose specifications prior to appointments saving any confusion onsite. Another advanced initiative that Premier offers to remain as key players in the industry is a bespoke online platform allowing clients to login and view their project images, put forward direct meeting requests and see live project schedules. One project the team has taken on this year is the development of 14 new apartments for the rental market. Premier are renovating

The firm have taken on projects fulfilling all kinds of briefs from extensions to new builds. existing buildings and adding multiple extensions to the rear to create the high specification quality living spaces. The company report that another two bespoke high end five bedroom dwellings for a luxury house developer are going well and are expected to be completed within a matter of months. A commercial renovation of a 20,000 sq. ft. industrial space required bespoke modern open plan showrooms, offices and consumer lifts; the project for the blue chip apparel and shoe wholesale company has recently been finalised.

Premier ensure that all plans are ran with fully qualified, experienced project managers with separate client liaison operatives to ensure that every development is run to clients’ needs with a full contract on a weekly basis. Tempting commercial and domestic clients to use services within the city post-Brexit, Premier offer free project appraisals for every venture.

Fly the nest and buy your own Government schemes available for first time buyers to get you on the ladder When my mum was my age (early 20s), houses in her price range were around £15,000, she tells me. Of course, people’s average earnings were a lot less than they are these days but buying a house for the first time in 2017 seems to have its difficulties. An Office for National Statistics (ONS) survey says that 1 in 4 young adults (20-34) were still living at home with family in 2015. This makes me feel a lot less alone but no less concerned about this housing crisis. ONS also found that young adults owning their own home decreased from 55 per cent in 1996 to just 30 per cent in 2015 for 25 to 29-year-

olds and from 68 per cent to 46 per cent for 30 to 34-year-olds.

The ISA

In an effort to change the stats, the government aims to deliver one million new homes by 2020. There’s been worry that the government might let us down on their target but despite that, there are lots of housing developments popping up in Fleckney, Leicester Forest East, Blaby, South Wigston and Wigston – and these are just some I’ve seen on my daily journey to our head office in Oadby.

Availability: UK

So now there are lots of new estates, how do we afford to get in on them? Here are some schemes to help.

Scheme Ends: Late 2019 Up to £3,000 is available for us first-time buyers aged over 16 to go towards a deposit. The government will put in 25% of however much you’ve saved. You can put in up to £1,200 in your first month and up to £200 per month onwards. They’ll stop adding to your savings when you reach £12,000. Your partner can also save in their own Help to Buy ISA which can be combined with your own when buying a house. Your 25% must be used by 2030.

The Equity Loan Availability: England Only Scheme Ends: 2021 You can buy a house with a 5% deposit and the government lets you borrow up to 20% of the cost of a new build home and a 75% mortgage to cover the rest and you won’t have to pay interest for the first five years.

Starter Homes Availability: England only Coming soon Aspiring home owners can register their interest in this scheme online. With this one you can buy a new build with a 20% discount on house prices up to £250,000 outside London. Read about these in more depth at ownyourhome.gov.uk NICHE | 57

Child safety risks at home

Ensuring good window design

Add warmth underfoot

Most of you will remember the harrowing news story about the death of a toddler playing at their grandparent’s house who was accidentally strangled by the cord of a window blind. You may also remember the shocking video footage of a toddler being silently strangled by one of these cords as the mother filmed the rest of the family unaware.

To some, the windows on a property might not seem like a big deal but to us in the industry we know the wrong design can make the whole house look…off.

The trend for wooden floorboards in the home has been going strong for some time now, however when the weather is cooler there is nothing like a plush, warm carpet underfoot to cosy up your home.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents found that since 1999 at least 30 deaths in the UK were due to looped cords. New child safety regulations came about in 2014 so make sure the company you choose are concerned with child safety! All our products conform with new regulations and we will advise on how to ensure any other blinds can be made safe. We also offer affordable child safe motorised blinds that use sophisticated technology with sleek aesthetics, remote control operation, and no installation wiring required to keep children out of danger from simple household products.

Whether you are looking to renovate an older property, update your existing home or build it from the roots up, windows are always an important choice to decide upon. Rather like the features to a face, windows are a key focus when looking at your home from both the outside looking in and the inside looking out. They form an impression of your property to not only yourself but to visitors and even passers-by. So, how do we advise on window purchases? Well, we start with a discussion about what they currently have. What do they like/dislike about their windows? What is the age of the property? What kind of budget do they have? What are the surrounding properties like? What home décor styles do they like?

At this time of year it’s time to start thinking of the summery weather ahead. And while you may be thinking about investing in your outside space, consider one of our patio awnings that protect against UV rays. And, if you have a conservatory and want to spend more time in it without overheating, check out our range of roof blinds with solar reflective coating that reduce heat. David Bennifer

Really, it is down to us to make sure you have the right windows for your home, it’s our job to ensure they are the right style and fit.

The important thing to remember though, is that even if you have no idea what you are after we will find out for you. Emma Spradbury

It all starts with a good underlay. A good P.U. underlay which is hardwearing with a high tog rating made from recycled materials is vital. Underlay is often a neglected aspect when people look to replace their carpets but it can really make all the difference and get the very best from your flooring. Now you have the foundation it’s time for the actual carpet. The right shade is a big decision, the finishing touch for any room whether you are looking for neutral or striking shades. Grey shades are popular as they work with a variety of interiors and is lower maintenance compared to creams. Trends are also moving towards patterned carpets for those looking to make a real statement, or, perhaps you would prefer to design your own. Whatever you are looking for, whether you currently have no idea or you have a whole ‘mood board’ dedicated to it, it is important to consult with your supplier and test out various types and shades in a showroom setting so that you are happy with your choice. The experience Plug Interiors designed a dream come true for their client Tom Smith in his family home

62 | NICHE

The well-known family-run design company, Plug Interiors, has earned itself a reputation around the shire for being expert creative craftspeople with years of combined experience in design, building and installation. Together, they bring decades of research, knowledge and handson expertise to the interior design industry and work with leading quality brands to create stunning spaces for every client. Thankful client of Plug, Tom Smith, guides us through his experience with the company after they transformed his home by fashioning an entirely new bathroom and building in an en suite to the main bedroom.

We didn’t know how we wanted to go about our project because we weren’t just redoing a bathroom, we were moving it to a different room and installing an en suite above it. We’d got ideas about what we wanted to do and the sort of look we wanted to go for but we were definitely in need of someone to give us guidance and their eye on how best to lay it out, and what would work technically and aesthetically. After visiting a few designers we went in to see Plug speculatively and got talking to Fran. We immediately hit it off with her because she understood exceptionally well what we were going for so we had a great initial relationship with Plug. Fran arranged to come out and start measuring up to begin working on some designs. It ended up being a very collaborative process because we’d got design ideas and Pinterest

boards with things that we liked so that we could share with them and they could respond with their ideas and input about how we could achieve that look and feel and have it actually work in terms of pipework and everything that needs to happen. We were all bouncing ideas off of each other so they got a real feel for what we were after. They made suggestions about how it could go and we challenged them with different scenarios to which they either said yes or educated us on why that wouldn’t be a great idea. We wanted something with a Scandinavian twist but also with a sort of mid-century vibe and all the Pinterest boards helped us explain to them so they could respond to the brief. And they absolutely fulfilled it. Our house is Edwardian so we wanted to respect that but at the same time we aimed for both bathrooms

to be fairly contemporary but keeping some original features like the cast iron fireplace in the main bathroom – they polished it up to make a fantastic feature out of it. The en suite was also challenging just because we wanted something pretty compact so it didn’t take too much space off the rest of the room. They were brilliant at getting that balance right between having something that’s functional and efficient. Plug were exceptionally ingenious with their storage space ideas. In the main bathroom we had a freestanding sink unit where some drawers were added and they also used the side of the chimney breast where there’s a bit of an alcove to create false walls for some builtin shelving. They made sure the wood finish tied in with everything else so it all looked coordinated rather than a jumble of different pieces. The majority of products were sourced by Plug but we didn’t get absolutely everything from them. We found the floor tiles from a supplier in Sweden and a few other things we sourced ourselves, and Plug were very happy to accommodate that. We were still unsure on everything else so they helped us with colour palettes for the walls and furniture so that it all tied together. Plug worked closely with our installer so there was that ongoing support between them and the whole installation team for any issues or queries about products, fittings and finishes. The fitting team were really efficient. Even with such a big job on their hands we only went a day without a bathroom. The company was remarkably personable. We went in there a number of times and they spent a lot of time with us working towards the final product and we were really impressed throughout the process with the way they worked with us. They were accommodating and tolerant of our ideas when we were chopping and changing how we thought something ought to be or ought not to be! We are well into 2017 and Spring is very nearly here, bringing with it all the lush, bright new colours of the fresh season Quite happily, this year is going to be all about bursts of colour, texture and pattern. Pantone’s colour of the year is called Greenery, a bright splash of vibrant, verdant green and so I thought I’d celebrate that by selecting items that are bright, bold and, well, green. Something a bit lighthearted, fun and most importantly are a breath of fresh air after the darkness of winter. The Facet accent chair is simply gorgeous with its angles and lines and the colour is just so lovely. Butterflies are also en vogue this year so the Andy Warhol print is bang on trend and really pretty too. Everlasting blooms are good all year round and this bunch by OKA Direct is simply stunning. The Cactus table lamp by Graham & Green is just so much fun and the bright and beautiful Bombyx rug by Swoon Editions embodies almost everything good about the new trends for 2017. Whatever your favourite season, now is the time to shake off the gloom leftover from dull dark Jaunuary and embrace the colourful, bright overtones of spring. Even if you favour a white or minimalist look, you can still partake of this trend by bringing in lots of different textures (think chunky knits, smooth metallics, velvets, chenilles etc.) or by introducing an accent colour. Go on try green, it is after all this season, golden. Have fun!

EAS is one of the leaders in windows, doors and conservatory design and installation in the Midlands and is based right here in Leicester. What does it take to have this success? Who is behind the scenes? What is it like to be a ‘double act’ in this industry? We caught up with Adam and Emma Spradbury of EAS to find out

Adam Spradbury

Emma Spradbury

MEN IN BUSINESS

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

What is your career background? I left school at 16 and began working for our family business, EA Signs. Initially, I was involved in the manufacture and erection of signs throughout the midlands, but the company then diversified when the UPVC industry launched and EAS Windows was born. I worked with my Dad and Uncle, plus several other members of the family over the years. I was a window fabricator so I worked in our factory in Oadby, manufacturing UPVC windows and doors.

What is your career background? After graduating in International Business, I knew I wanted a career in HR or Marketing. I worked for BP Oil in the marketing department, which confirmed HR was for me! I found it difficult to break into, but after a quick stint in IT (which I hated), I moved into HR via a training and development role. I gained my CIPD qualifications and worked in HR for over 10 years, mainly in third party warehousing and logistics. My last role before moving to EAS was as HR Manager for a large warehouse in Corby, which we operated on behalf of a retail giant. I began life at EAS as a receptionist. This was the best training ground ever and offered a highly valuable insight into the industry and the company.

How has your role evolved? I have worked my way across and up the company, touching most of the roles within the business to a greater or lesser extent. I have been in charge of the day-to-day running of the business for the last 15 years and I have been MD since 2007. I became sole owner approximately three years ago, and now share ownership with my wife Emma. What challenges have you had since starting the business and do you think being a man has had any bearing on those challenges? There are many challenges in dealing with suppliers, customers and internal working teams – especially as we are so dependent upon third parties. Our business is relatively straightforward but there is a surprising number of links in the chain and these throw up challenges every day! I do think it has got more demanding as the internet and social media have taken over a large part of our world, too. It’s a fact that our industry is heavily maledominated and it’s always a refreshing change to have dealings with any females. Unfortunately, there are not many ladies involved in this technical and operational element of businesses like EAS. This is highlighted, especially, when it comes to managing the installations onsite, so in this respect it’s likely to remain a man’s world for some time - but when it comes to the internal running of the business, it’s quite common for women to play a key role and this is as it should be!

How has your role evolved? The entire commercial landscape has altered since I started; the products, supply chain, customer buying patterns, industry regulation, competition, internet – the only constant over the years has been the change! As such, my role has become more strategic and I take a special interest in business development initiatives. I now co-own the business with my husband, Adam. What challenges have you had since starting the business and do you think being a woman has had any bearing on those challenges? I struggled with a sense of identity for quite some time – I was seen as the ‘boss’ wife’ rather than an individual in my own right and I found the dynamics of this relationship difficult at times. Our industry is traditionally very male orientated but I’ve never been intimidated by this or seen it as a negative. Plus, knowing the increasingly significant role that females play in buying decisions within the home, I actually think it’s an advantage that I’m female. I’m a fan of diversity in general but in our case I think it comes down to the fact that Adam and I make a good team; we share the same values and have complimentary skill-sets. Customers seem to think that we make a good ‘double act’ and they appear to like a family business being run by a husband and wife.

Those in Property have their say

Choosing a reliable construction firm It’s important to do your research before choosing who will put your project into action – whether it’s a new block of offices or developments to your home. Here are our tips. Get the gossip If they’re proud of the work they’ve done they’ll have a record on their website of the projects they’ve completed. Recommendations are the best way to find out what a company is like so there is no harm in getting in touch with businesses who have used their services to see what they say. Better yet, visit some of their previous jobs and while you’re there you can get a testimonial from a customer. Get a brief together Make sure you get exactly what you want – within reason. There may be aspects of your project that are difficult to fulfil for technical reasons and a good company will educate you as to why. Write up a brief and give a copy to the firm and add pictures too! Ask around Get quotes from several companies. This way you’ll have an idea if one of them is massively overcharging you. Likewise, study the cost breakdown. If one seems a great deal cheaper than the others don’t be afraid to interrogate them a little! Ask how they plan to achieve everything you want without cutting corners and checking what’s included. Premier DC 0116 214 5099 premierdc.co.uk 70 | NICHE

Securing Business Our customers have to feel assured that their lives and property are in safe hands. With a legacy spanning six decades, ours are the safe and knowledgeable hands they need to be in, which is why businesses of all sizes across the UK come to us. We install high definition CCTV for energy producer and supplier, Shell. They need to be able to see their fore courts and shops at all times to cover crimes and health and safety issues. Shell also comes to us for the latest technology in intruder alarms for every site, panic alarms and fog bandits filling the room with smoke should an alarm go off, which protects employees, customers and makes it harder for criminals to escape.

Year round colour So, in the last issue I talked about having the right fish for your environment. This time I’m going to talk about planting your garden up so it looks great even in winter. Some gardens can look a little miserable in winter! If it’s a heavy perennial garden with lots of deciduous plants this can be the case. However, with the right planting you can still have a striking garden all year-round. Firstly, there are some fantastic deciduous plants which look great in the colder seasons, for example: Acer Sango-kaku - Autumn see the leaves turn a bright rich yellow colour. By the winter the stem turns to a striking red colour which gleams on frosty mornings.

We have carried out the same work for Nando’s including their fire systems that can include automatic door and ventilation controls and remote monitoring to fire and rescue services.

Cornus – Bright orange and red stems look awesome in winter, they also like a damp spot in gardens.

With response times to all sites within four hours any time of day or night of the year, our clients know they can count on us to be there for them when they need us.

Hellebores – Great for front of border planting and some varieties have striking flowers too.

As the only family run, NSI approved national alarm company in the UK, we make it our responsibility to embrace all technology so that we can continuously provide the UK with state-of-the-art products. Joel Mulloy 08448 00 22 77 abelalarm.co.uk

Evergreen winter beauties

Skimmia – Fantastic bud like flowers which open-up in spring time, great in the shade as well. So, get your gardens looking great all year round. In the next issue I will be talking about keeping ponds clear and how easy it actually is. Michael Wheat

MIPIM 2017 Local leading experts in property, construction and development will visit the world’s largest property convention in Cannes, France

Team Leicestershire is heading to the glamorous home of the famous film festival, Palais des Festivals, after last year’s astounding fulfilment at MIPIM. Cannes will see over 23,000 participants from 90 countries reside in its stunning location for the week 14th – 17th March, who will be eagerly seeking out new business deals and seeking the chance to make the acquaintance of leaders of some of the biggest businesses across the globe. Since last March, Team Leicestershire have been drumming up business and creating quite a hype around their visit to the exquisite French resort as this meeting could mean remarkable things for Leicestershire. Their aim is to attract inward investment as they attempt to showcase what our region has to offer to businesses around the world. The group of industry experts include the likes of Ian Guyler

of Pedigree Filbert, Imogen Cox of Cartwright King, Helen Donnellan of the Leicester City Council and Jenny Cross of Cross Productions. Made up of 14 private sector businesses, each with a leading expert in property, construction and development, the Team Leicestershire delegation will offer their partnership to influential organisations looking to expand their business. Having a presence at MIPIM has proven invaluable for Leicestershire’s own business people to make contacts with those in powerful positions. The conference is a week of fancy dinners and fine drinks in posh venues and of course, workshops, masterclasses, and networking events with influential speakers talking on essential and current topics. It’s the place where businesspeople can meet others who can have a dramatic influence on our city’s progress.

International technology giant IBM noticed the shire’s potential for producing top rate graduates and created 300 IT jobs for residents when they set up offices in the city, just as Hastings Direct did in 2015. More recently, Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) has teamed up with PRS for Music to form a licencing company and have chosen Leicestershire for its home because of its three outstanding universities, ease of access to the rest of the country and varied talent available. Team Leicestershire hope to encourage more companies like this into the city by taking advantage of the opportunities MIPIM presents. With the success of Leicester City in the Premier League last year and the burial of King Richard III that have put Leicester at the forefront of an international stage, hopes are high for the team to come away from MIPIM with priceless connections and potential business transactions.

Torr Waterfield and Charities

Will writing part 3

Same sex parent disputes

Each year, Torr Waterfield select a charity to support. Funds are raised from a variety of activities, including an office weekend walk each September and the annual prestigious, and cut-throat, Torr Waterfield Karting Cup. In 2016, we raised almost £4,000 for LAMP, a mental health charity in Leicester.

This is the finishing instalment of my third meeting with Nick Foreman at K4 Law.

The laws regarding same sex parents has changed significantly within the last 10 years.

We went through my Will and Nick made sure to explain step by step as we discussed this third draft. He made completely sure that I was certain of what my Will covers: the here and now along with my future, the financial and material aspects of my estate and that it is to cover all of it, who shall be in charge of distributing my estate and seeing that my wishes are carried out (executors), who I wish my estate to be left to, and if my circumstances change and I have children, how this alters.

Same sex parents often want to know where they stand in law if they are not the biological parent or the legal parent of the child and whether this will have a bearing on any decision made by the court in the event that a dispute arises between the parents upon separation. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer and depends very much on the facts of the case and the particular circumstances.

We are delighted to announce that our chosen charity for 2017 is the Alzheimer’s Society, which provides information and support for people with all forms of dementia, and those who care for them. Alzeimer’s, a disease damaging the brain, is the most common cause of dementia. There are over half a million sufferers in the UK, mainly over the age of 65. As the average age of our population increases, so do the numbers suffering from Alzeimer’s. There is no current cure for the disease, but the support of the Alzeimer’s Society helps sufferers to live well with the condition. Please visit alzeimers.org.uk to learn more about the society. We continue to work with and prepare accounts for a number of other charities, who we also help to support and promote. We have experts in the field of Accounting and Reporting by Charities; Neil Ford, one of our experts, recently posted a blog about the new Fundraising Regulator and the Code of Practice that now affects charities and anyone involved in their management. If you are involved with charities, please read Neil’s blog on our website. Peter Morris 0116 242 3400 torrwaterfield.co.uk 76 | NICHE

After a small tweak at my request, Nick produced the final version. Confirming I was happy, a third party was brought in as a witness. I then signed and initialled all pages followed by the independent witness and finally by Nick himself. Now my Will is final! I have a copy for myself and a copy for my executor. Ideally, you write a Will for a long-term purpose. Currently I have no plans of going anywhere but in the future when I am married with children and possibly grandchildren, and my estate has hopefully grown, I may wish to review and alter the Will as I see fit at any time. Sally Smith talking of her experience of working with Nick Foreman of K4 Law

0116 216 0510 K4law.com

It is best for those in a same sex relationship who are planning a family to take legal advice at the outset about their rights and responsibilities in law and to consider what the situation would be if their relationship were to fail after children are born to the family through IVF. The Court must consider what is in the child’s best interest and the attachment that the child has to each parent. It can be difficult to determine issues such as which parent is held to be the main carer on separation of the parties if that issue is disputed between the parents. The biology of the child is clearly an important consideration but that can seriously disadvantage the other parent in same sex relationships where only one of the parents DNA is present in the child but where the other is in all respects an equal parent but is not biologically related to the child. Hope Against Cancer is Leicestershire and Rutland’s local cancer research charity and Eileen Richards Recruitment is hard at work making sure their message is heard loud and clear. The charity has come up with an initiative to encourage corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity of companies throughout the area called Hope Through Business. Owner of the recruitment company Eileen Richards, along with Managing Partner of Pick Everard, Duncan Green, are fully supportive of the scheme. Eileen said: “Hope Against Cancer is one of our chosen charities to which I’m also a Trustee. Myself and Duncan saw an opportunity to raise awareness through the Leicester business community. All the money we raise goes into research via clinical trials and this is all done in Leicestershire.” The pair want to ensure that Leicestershire becomes a hub of expertise in cancer research and treatment, so to push the reach of the scheme, the two influential businesspeople, Eileen and Duncan, have created The Business Club in which every member is asked to commit to raising £1,500 over a two year period that will go

directly to Hope Against Cancer. The funds will help the charity fund vital local cancer research, support postgraduates and cancer clinicians pursuing a career in cancer research, and fund the Hope research nurse who cares for patients taking part in clinical trials. The Business Club’s sponsor Marsh & Co will generously help to hold two lunches per year where guests will have the opportunity to hear from professors and patients on the clinical trials as well as local businesses on what they have been doing to raise money. Members are asked to invite three guests who are ideally from different companies in order to magnify Hope’s message. Eileen and Duncan welcome you to join The Business Club and become part of a ground-breaking group that are helping to fund projects tackling many forms of cancer, therefore creating better outcomes for local people. hopeagainstcancer.org.uk

The EU General Data Protection Regulation The GDPR regulate personal data throughout the European Union – it may affect your business as all companies who are members of the EU, regardless of location, will need to abide by 2018 With so much of our personal and professional data stored digitally, the GDPR attempts to protect all EU citizens’ privacy and eradicate data breaches. But what about Brexit? Since it could take a number of years to work through Article 50 since triggered, Theresa May has said that GDRP will become law in the UK. You will need to prepare for this if your company resides inside or outside of the EU and you offer goods or services to, or monitor the behaviours of, EU subjects (eugdpr. org). If you fail to have sufficient customer consent to use their data or infringe upon Privacy by Design (the minimisation of necessary data and limited access to this data), you are subject to a fine of up to €20 million (£17 million). Fines may also be imposed if you are made aware of a

data breach and do not report it to the data protection authorities and to those affected within 72 hours. According to eugdpr.org, consent to use the data (a name, photo, address, email address, social media posts, medical information, computer IP address, bank details etc.) of a ‘natural person’ must be completely clear and unambiguous. Consumers need only say they ‘opt in’ to meet these requirements but the wording used to request the use of such data must be in clear and plain language and it must be made as easy to withdraw as it is to give it. Companies will need to prepare before the regulation is set in place on 25th May 2018 but the end result should be a positive one. Much of our sensitive data is collected and exchanged digitally putting our personal information at risk but if the public are confident in a business to protect their information, they are more likely to use its services. Find more information at ico.org.uk and eugdpr.org

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO ◆ Designate a Data Protection Officer (DPO) to take responsibility for data protection compliance. ◆ Document all the personal information you hold, where you obtained it from and those you share it with. ◆ Check you cover all individuals’ rights, which include data portability, subject access, to have information deleted, to have inaccuracies corrected, and prevent automated decisionmaking and direct marketing. If not, update your procedures and provide additional information. ◆ Review how you obtain data and make changes accordingly. You may think about having an ‘opt-in’ policy as you will not be able to collect data by default or by having tick boxes for people to opt out of their data being shared. ◆ Ensure you have procedures in place to detect, report and investigate data breaches. ◆ Inform those you collect data from of how you process it, retention periods and that they have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). ◆ Notify the ICO if there has been a confidentiality breach that could put someone at risk.

LLEP launches £12.4 million fund for local developers The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) has relaunched the fourth round of its £12.4 million ‘Growing Places Fund’ (GPF) which is open to developers, local authorities and businesses, to apply for short term loans to assist with projects such as new homes developments and the creation of office and commercial development space. This is the fourth time GPF loans have been available. Already through the first three rounds, eleven projects received GPF finance, resulting in the creation of 979 new houses, 15,000 square Inline image 1metres of new

office space and 3,650 jobs in the Leicester and Leicestershire area. Nick Pulley, LLEP chairman, said: “GPF allows infrastructure developments to go ahead, unlocking potential developments across the city and county and creating much needed jobs that will boost our economy. “As a loan scheme, the money will be repaid over a period of time, so it can be re-invested in future schemes.” Projects such as the new business park, Optimus Point in Glenfield; the housing development at the

old Velodrome site on Saffron Road and the new Formula E headquarters at Donington Park, have all benefited from the GPF loan scheme. The closing date for applications is Friday 17th March 2017. NICHE | 81

Exhibiting your business How important is it for your business to be seen in the right circles? Well, from direct experience we know the significant benefits to be had. That’s why we’re be bringing the perfect opportunity for this to happen with our Cross Connections Business Expo on 26th October at The Kube, Leicester Racecourse. Here’s why exhibitions will get you seen in the right light. For so many businesses, learning how to show themselves to the right audience is no easy task, especially in an age where technology and social media play such a huge role. How do you a) present yourself and b) who do you present yourself to? Here at Cross Productions we know only too well the importance of your direct networking ‘unit’ so, joining together with other businesses in the local community to share ideas, motivation and contacts is something we are always keen to implement. This, along with social media and advertising outlets, is what will help your business take off and continue to thrive.

Importance of brand Branding and advertising are different facets of a comprehensive marketing strategy. Companies and organisations use branding to create a look, feel and message for themselves that will be remembered by consumers or clients. Advertising is used to convey that brand directly to your audience through various media, such as purchasing radio or television broadcast time, newspaper or magazine space, or online advertisements. Branding is important because it helps the client remember a company and its products and feel good about using them. The elements used to create a brand can include name, logo, tagline, colour, music or jingle, and the message or feelings that the company wishes to associate with itself. Developing a brand for a product or service allows a company to differentiate from other similar products in the same category, and to position the product or service relative to the current market.

So, join us for our expo this October and get a full day of networking meeting new potential clients or partners face to face, be inspired by powerful speakers, discover contacts and learn how to stay ahead and stand out from the crowd of competition. Crucially, everything will be vital, relevant and valuable to you and your business. Sally Smith

Creating a successful brand requires that a business understands its customer base and aligns its business image with the customers’ needs and wants. Develop a name and logo that appeals to your customers and prospects, and a tagline to go with the logo that succinctly captures the message you are trying to convey. Choose colours, typefaces and graphics that complement the message, and use these items consistently throughout your marketing materials. Nick Taylor

Dress code in the workplace Recent reports in the media have highlighted issues involving employee dress code, and what to wear in the workplace. A particular case of note was the experience of a London based receptionist who was sent home from work for not wearing high heels. A dress code is becoming even more important within the workplace taking into account the number of legal cases involved with this subject area. Therefore it is so important have a dress code or policy within an employee handbook. Areas to remember include; An employer’s dress code should not be discriminatory on the grounds of age, disability, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation. Employers may have health and safety reasons for having certain standards involving dress. A dress code must apply on an equal basis to both men and women, although this may involve different requirements. Reasoanble adjustments should be made for disabled employees where a dress code is in place. This short article only provides a summary within this subject area, and it is important that employers obtain the right advice. Also more importantly that the right advice is successfully implemented. Ivan Spibey 0116 212 1153/07712 115 663 info@atomhr.co.uk atomhr.co.uk

“We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle” Sir Winston Churchill

2017 brings welcome changes to substantial shareholdings exemptions and treatment of business losses A new year usually ushers in the arrival of new corporate tax rules, and 2017 is no different. Happily some of the changes we can look forward to later this year are good news for business taxpayers – including a much-needed extension of the substantial shareholdings exemption and more flexibility around the treatment of business losses. The substantial shareholdings exemption, whereby a sale of a trading company by a trading group is exempt from corporation tax, has occasionally been difficult to operate. This was because it was either hard to prove that the vendor was a trading group or because of problems ensuring that the company that was sold continued to trade after the sale. However, these requirements are set to be repealed, so that from 1 April 2017 most sales of a trading subsidiary will be exempt from corporation tax. Other welcome new measures which come into force courtesy of the Finance Act 2017 include the way business losses are treated for tax. These changes mean that companies will be able to use losses more flexibly, with carried forward losses being available to set against all future sources of income and also being available for group relief. At the moment, carried forward losses can usually only be set against the same kind of income in future years and cannot be used for group relief. While these changes are indeed positive news, businesses will need good professional tax advice to ensure they reap the full benefit. For further information on what these changes might mean for your business please contact Pete Miller on 0116 208 1020

Killer online sales tactics for 2017 Need more sales? It’s absolutely crucial that you understand the decision-making process behind e-commerce if you want to succeed. Every business is unique, but these four rules never change... 1 You must understand your customer To understand the needs and wants of your target audience, you have to be proactive and engage with them. This can be in person, phone, email or even on social media. Over time, this becomes invaluable for creating detailed customer profiles. If you’ve had complaints in the past, don’t ignore them - learn from them! 2 Building trust is essential A great customer experience starts with brand awareness. At that point, you simply need to provide helpful information to make their life easier. Later you can build on that relationship. This could take a few seconds or even a few months, but persuasive selling techniques will only work once that trust is established. 3 Make sure your website is fantastic Slow, outdated and uninspired websites cost retailers billions every year. Making a brilliant first impression is vital, but you need to look beyond that too. The journey from seeing your site for the first time, finding a product or service and reaching the checkout or enquiry stage needs to be lightning fast. If not, your customers will abandon your site. Diana Esho 0333 332 6396 easy-internet.co.uk 90 | NICHE

Jargon Buster There are some phrases that people often hear but don’t fully understand, so here’s a list to help. Bandwidth the size of a data connections capacity. Usually measured in Kilobits, Megabits or Gigabits per second (Kbps, Mbps, Gbps). Cloud Computing a network of remote servers hosted on the internet rather than a local server or computer which are used to process, manage and store data. Fibre Optics fibre optic cable offers far superior bandwidth over longer distances than conventional copper cable. IVR (Interactive Voice Response) a voice processor which can answer calls and accesses a database to make a data enquiry. The database may be held in the voice system or third party system. Most common for telephone banking and call centres. LAN (Local Area Network) a data communications network linking local PCs together to provide a multi-node centrally controlled computer system. Screen Popping the ability for your phone system to pass data to your CRM and relay the caller’s information to your screen before you answer the call.

Helping your brand to Soar Do you rely on multiple suppliers for your signage, business stationery, adverts and literature? Does your branding always match and look consistent or do you find there are differences and issues? Maintaining your brand identity to ensure you are perceived as a professional organisation, whether it be the proportions of your logo, the colours used or the actual font, every individual element is important. And when adding more than one supplier into the mix, the likelihood that there will be some differences and errors in your marketing collateral will increase. If you want to ensure that your brand identity is consistent across all your marketing efforts, a newer client of ours, Harlow, can highly recommend utilising one agency who can do it all. We have helped Harlow by designing and printing their literature, billboard adverts, signage and business stationery. We also created bespoke internal toolkits to ensure each depot has the correct information to allow them to be confident that they can order the correct signage variable; i.e. size, material, internal or external use.

Toll Fraud the illegal (fraudulent) use of your telephone system by external or internal sources to make calls abroad or to high tariff numbers. Peter Daly

So if you have multiple projects and would like the confidence that all will be consistent when completed, let us help you take the headache away and ensure you look as professional as possible in your marketplace. Call us today. Chris Goodman

The elusive mystery that surrounds exclusive associates groups has intrigued many for centuries – we find out what goes on in the privacy of one of the most exclusive clubs in Britain

Behind the closed doors of

rivate members clubs

Private member’s clubs were popularised in the 1800s and were set up so that upper-middle class ladies and gents could enjoy the finer things in life along with other middle class ladies and gents who enjoy the same. These exclusive clubs caught on and there are plenty to get involved in today with each having its own methods of vetting their applicants. The Partnership Lifestyle Club has three geographically based clubs and although has a rigid screening process for new members, they welcome friendly, approachable, distinguished individuals in business who have interest in experiencing the finer things in life. Torie Blythe-Richards, Owner and Founder of The Partnership Lifestyle Club explained why: “It’s important to our members that they experience the highest level of service, in the most exquisite surroundings, in a range of things they may

SEO Optimisation Search Engine

Optimise your website to get higher search engine rankings As your business grows, you can move up through the ranks to get bigger and better results from all the major search engines and for multiple search terms

Why should you do this?

of web traffic comes from web searches

110| | NICHE 92 NICHE

It’s the biggest growing media evolution and every single one of your competitors are in on it. A search engine only features the sites that it values most in terms of reputation and relevance to the keywords or key phrases a person has used in order to look for an answer to their question. Statistically, the website with the sought after number one position will receive more clicks than any of the other suggested sites below it. The higher you rank, the more trustworthy and credible your website will appear.

How do you get to number one?

There are two types of search listings. Organic listings (also known as free or natural listings) will be sites that have regular quality content such as blogs, links to reliable sources, and lots of social media shares. Advertised listings (also known as sponsored listings) have been paid for to be at the top of

of all organic clicks are on the top 5 results

search results. SEO is all about making it easier for people to find your site, so updating your content with keywords, links, and phrases as well as information relevant to searches will gain you more organic clicks. It’s also important to understand the way a search engine thinks, works and organises itself. You might tag a picture on Instagram as a steakhouse beef burger with extra cheese and a side of fries but as intelligent as search engines are, they aren’t so sophisticated to recognise it in this way. To achieve top rankings on Google, Yahoo or Bing you need to act like a human, think like a search engine.

The Fastest Growing Companies in Leicestershire is inspired by the success of her clients and her firm every day.

Shelley Harvey

Director of Hayles Leicester (part of the SFB Group) Running Hayles, the Leicester office of the SFB Group, Shelley is devoted to seeing her colleagues and clients achieve their personal and business goals. She says she

When she moved to Leicestershire with her husband, she fell in love with the business community and enjoys working in the centre of the city. Shelley hadn’t always planned for a career in accounting as she was sure she’d follow the family footsteps and go into optometry – that was until she was offered an apprenticeship in accounting where she gained an AAT qualification and has never looked back. She then studied for her professional qualification ACCA with Kaplan. When the opportunity arose to work at SFB, Shelley was drawn to the large growing firm after clicking immediately with Group Directors Paul Carvell and Peter White finding they shared the same goals and aspirations.

After eight years of working for SFB, the Coventry-born accountant was appointed as Director to join Paul and Peter who have been source of great inspiration, supporting Shelley through her progression. In 2015, following the SFB Groups acquisition of Hayles, Shelley’s responsibility developed into the Director of Hayles, overseeing the running of the Leicester office, managing the team and ensuring their clients received the high quality service that both Hayles and SFB are known for. She has overseen the integration of Hayles into the SFB Group which she believes has brought a new stability to her team and benefitted her clients by offering a wider range of specialist services.

Today, Morningside Pharmaceuticals is recognised as a niche product company within the Pharmaceutical Industry. As a manufacturer, wholesaler and exporter of branded generic medicines and healthcare products, the company is dedicated to delivering first-class medicines that can make a significant difference to the lives of patients globally. From humble beginnings, Nik has taken it upon himself to share his success with his team and takes great pride in motivating the workforce and seeing them grow into successful individuals. 94 | NICHE

The Chief Executive is involved in many working groups in the East Midlands, one being the Life Sciences committee within the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and is also the Chair of the International Trade Steering Group for the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce. Last year Nik was invited to attend a trade visit to Delhi, India with the Prime Minister, Theresa May; he was among 30 captains of industry who joined the Prime Minister to drum up business and help negotiate a post-Brexit trade deal. During the trip Theresa May said: “I am showing off the best of British on my trade trip to India… Morningside Pharmaceuticals is a great example of what the United Kingdom can offer the world as we leave the EU.”

Nik’s interests include family, economics, politics, mentoring, sport, international trade, philanthropy and supporting local charities and businesses; most recently, he has made a substantial donation towards a minibus for Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland.

Ian Morris

Group Commercial Director at EHL Commercial Law – Part of EHL Group (UK) Limited Growing up in the supportive area of Birstall, Ian feels very lucky to have been surrounded by a such close community. He believes this has affected his personality and his work ethic in that he is able to value and respect those around him more because of where he grew up than if he’d been a part of a disjointed and non-interactive community.

Senior Associate in Commercial Dispute Resolution at Gateley PLC

This part of his personality stems into his business philosophy. He lives by the idea ‘treat the cleaner right through to the boss with the same respect you desire yourself’. His extensive work with the executive board has been to train staff and develop an open culture across the whole firm based on innovation, positivity and changing mind-sets to accommodate changing markets.

The title essentially means that Claire is a ‘partner in training’ so after being promoted to Senior Associate last May, she is only one step away from fulfilling her next career goal. The Commercial Dispute Resolution expert can be considered an inspiration to the junior fee earners at Gateley’s as despite not qualifying via the traditional route, Claire has progressed at a respectable rate through the firm.

His fascination with marketing was sparked while working in retail. Ian found he was naturally drawn to how customers were targeted through effective marketing strategies, which impelled him to study marketing at university. Five years in a national training and development company helped him to understand various marketplaces and how to target market in the real world.

Claire Herbert

Specialising in reputation management through to estate disputes, Claire provides a service, which is quite often a distress purchase. Her aim is to help clients achieve what is right for them in a cost effective manner – which is not always easy! Like a game of chess, tactics must be planned to put her one step ahead of her opponent but

their next move can send Claire and her client in a completely different direction. She says that no day, or game, is ever the same. Claire has played a fundamental role in raising around £200,000 for charity in recent years by organising events such as the L Factor and the Gauntlet. She also coined Network LE, which has become a prominent and successful networking event in Leicester.

Ian states that the EHL Group is such a wide and strategically diversified collective of professional businesses that it is hard for the team to get bored, therefore defeating the notion that it is only a matter of time before a marketing and sales specialist will work for a company before they become stagnant. Fragrance marketing YOU KNOW IT MAKES SCENTS Smell sells, and the best marketers in the country know it, KERRY SMITH explains how smell affects business Catch a whiff of smells from your past and you’re memory is instantly triggered sending you back to the emotions and moods you felt at that time. Aromas leave lasting impressions and when smelt again, bring back waves of hidden memories. This is because your brain reacts to smell more than any other sense. Here’s the science behind it. Smells travel through the nose and connect with parts of the brain associated with memory and emotion; the hippocampus and amygdala, which are processed by over 1,000 odour receptors in the ‘olfactory bulb’ (PsychologyToday). Stores and supermarkets pull you in by the nose whether you realise it or not. When somewhere smells nice, studies have found that people are willing to spend more, stay longer and have a more enjoyable experience – and leading retailers know the importance of getting the atmosphere right. Sabrina Hanson, fragrance marketer and owner of SH Scent, provides companies and homes with a vast selection of superior air fresheners based on well-known luxury French perfumes. Sabrina’s biggest customers are care homes, hotels, stadiums, amusement arcades, 96 | NICHE

gyms and casinos, and taxi drivers have even been known to use her products instead of normal car air fresheners for a more pleasant journey for their customers. To all of these establishments, a quality scent is essential for sensory branding, sales and customer experience. The passionate believer that a good scent is well worth it personally travels around the country to refill each of her customer’s dispensers with fragrances and free batteries. “A lot of standard air fresheners can leave you choking,” Sabrina told us, “but with our perfume-based formulas, our scents dissipate around the room gradually deodorising and refreshing any room from the lounge of your own home to the meeting room or hotel reception leaving the air much more suitable to breathe normally for most people. Based on essential oils, they’re odour neutralising and enhance the ambience of any area.” Once clients start using Sabrina’s products in their homes or offices they tend to never go back to life before SH Scent. The mum of three added: “I have corporate customers who, after a short while, decide not to continue once thinking ‘it’s only an air freshener,’ yet found a couple of weeks later that they just had to have the air fresheners back.”

As well as fresh and fragrant, your office and home’s health levels can be maximised with Sabrina’s Supernova surface wipes and hand sanitiser. The antibacterial goodies exceed European standards and have been proven to be effective against 99.9 per cent of bacteria, spores, viruses and fungi including Ebola, Clostridium difficile, MRSA and Norovirus. So, with air fresheners so good you’ll want to spray them all over yourself, and safe in the knowledge that your keyboards and surfaces are free from germs, you and your customers and visitors will think of you the next time they catch the smell of a similar perfume taking them right back to your office and the wonderful experience they had there. Niche Magazine’s Director Jenny Cross said: “We are forever getting compliments on the smell of our offices now we have SH Scent’s fragrances! Our favourite scent is the Davania.”

TAXIS AND PRIVATE HIRE

The man behind

the business David Hunter, is he ruthless? Funny? Hard-working, or all the aforementioned? We caught up with him to find out How did ADT start? The firm started by accident in 2002, and prior to this I ran a school tour operating business which sold school packages to Disneyland Paris. When this finished I found myself with a couple of minibuses left over and along with my business partner Ashley Butcher we started getting school contracts as a way of utilising the buses. The next step was the formation of Ashley David Taxis ( ADT ) and the rest as they say is history! Our backgrounds were from customer service industries and marketing so the combination was right for where we wanted the business to go. What do you think has been the key to its success? From the beginning and ever since, service was our key focus and that focus has always been integral. We wanted our reputation to be one of smart, clean cars and drivers, we wanted our drivers to be new to the industry so we could train them to our way of thinking, that being reliable and customer focused. All our drivers must pass driving tests and medicals and are taught to

think like a chauffeur instead of a stereotyped taxi driver. We also have been ahead of the game in terms of technology, we were the first to bring out a live real time app, way before Uber, and we were the first to text every customer on a booking with tracking details, so they can see their taxi approaching in real time on google maps. Our main selling point I think is that we invite customers to give us feedback, 90% is positive, but I embrace the negative ones, as it gives us a chance to improve, it also puts me in touch directly with a customer with a grievance and gives me the opportunity to put that right. We get back to feedback, within the hour, and all complaints we investigate. Where do you see the industry heading? The whole industry has changed so much, it’s become more reliant on technology, and more professional. The way people transport themselves will soon change. Car ownership will disappear as car companies switch to driverless cars and hailing app services. Our industry is now being bought up by huge corporations wanting to be

at the forefront of the new age and most car makers now own a lot of the hailing apps, which really is the future of the taxi industry. Our current plans include more bookings to be made by our apps, which are currently around 40%. We have also just recently launched a national app which is available across the UK and US, which we have invested in, along with ten other taxi companies across the UK. Our Riide app will link up with taxi companies across the UK so you only need one booking app where ever you are. Who is David? I have many heads, to some I’m laid back, and yet others might see me as ruthless! Some will find me funny, others helpful and some may have a doll of me and spend their free time sticking pins in it, although that may be the ex-wife! But joking aside, I think most would say I’m inventive, reasonable and hard working.

The UK family business sector

4 million

firms going strong

£1.1 trillion

The triumph

turnover every year

9 million employees

of the family business

A passionate group who celebrate the essential contribution that family businesses make to UK economy are making their way to Leicestershire Common misconceptions about family businesses are that they are small, will not become household names and will struggle to survive. Family Business United have something to say about that. They claim the family business sector accounts for four million firms, £1.1 trillion in turnover; almost a quarter of the UK Gross Domestic Product and employ over nine million people. To put things into perspective, in Leicestershire we are lucky enough to be home to Sturgess Motor Group. The leading car dealer is one of the most respected names in UK motor retailing and they’re also one of the oldest family-operated dealers set up in 1897 by Walter E. Sturgess. Family Business United will be touring around the country celebrating the diversity of the family business sector and helping to put them on the map with the fourth of its kind, The Family Business Road Trip, that begins in Plymouth on 24th April. The tour will be coming to Leicester on 4th May with a visit to Sturgess Motor Group, who are supplying the car for the trip. Drinks and canapés will be served and

guests can mingle amongst the latest range of motors before a three course dinner and an insight into this Royal Warrant Holding family firm. Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United said: “This is our fourth innovative tour of family businesses to mark their contribution to the UK economy. The Family Business Road Trip 2017, sponsored by Close Brothers Asset Management, Farrer & Co and PwC, will travel across the country bringing businesses together to share experiences, network and address the challenges they face, as well as putting the sector on the map.” Over the 2017 six week tour, the events will meet with families behind some of the UK’s most noteworthy businesses, including Wyke Farms, Thatchers Cider, Cotteswold Dairy, Exclusive Hotels and William Turner. “Last year a firm of funeral directors, a hotel group, builder’s merchant, tool distributor and a bird sanctuary

took part. They all shared one thing in common: family values were core to their companies,” Paul explained. Sian Steele, Head of Family Business at PwC in the UK added: “Events such as this enable us to see firsthand the real diversity of the family business sector and the great contribution they make to the local, national and global economy. We understand the challenges facing family firms and are delighted to be involved with such an innovative event that is a true celebration of the family business sector.”

Encouraging greatness in a thriving city The East Midlands was described as the worst performing region in the country by Ofsted last year with children achieving the poorest GCSE results in England (The Guardian) It seems there is a pretty bleak outlook on the education sector in general with funding cuts, new tougher SATs and exam papers, declining grades and increased pressure on teachers. Meanwhile though, there are many standout schools in Leicestershire including renowned sporting Loughborough University, Beauchamp College, Leicester University and De Montfort University who we collaborated with to showcase the designs of fashion students in our issue 14 shoot. There are also lots of schools, projects and businesses that are actively promoting engagement in children and young people in education, offering real life experience in the work place and inspiring young people to achieve their aspirations. To see that Leicester’s next generation fulfil their potential, local businesses are taking on apprentices, private schools are further developing their outstanding varied syllabi and extra-curricular activities, and there are many schemes in place to help develop the talent and lives of young people helping to find a career in which they will excel. 106 | NICHE

At Niche, we are working with Graduate Champions, the De Montfort University graduate scheme that provides the chance to take up a six week paid internship with a leading UK business. We have taken on computing graduate Avtar Mann who has developed a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system for us to utilise across all areas of business.

I’ve learnt more than I expected. It’s really opened my eyes to looking into CRM systems as a possible career path. I didn’t think I’d be feeling this way already. I’ve learnt about working in a real life team. The only problems I’ve had have been with the software so it’s also been good learning all about problem solving and communication.”

Just four weeks into the Champions scheme, Niche Magazine Editor Lee Parkin said: “As a rapidly growing company we’ve benefitted greatly from Avtar’s skills and the new (CRM) system, which I can see already will make our efficiency far more advanced and our workloads easier to handle. He’s had the opportunity to be part of a real situation with a real brief and I like to think we’ve given him the support he needs to effectively achieve that and learn from his experiences. He’ll also be helping to train our team how to use what he’s created.”

Cross Productions also works with the Dorothy Goodman School, which caters for pupils with learning disabilities. Due to her passion for working with local businesses, active work within the community and connections, our Managing Director Jenny Cross was asked to represent the school as an ambassador helping young people find opportunities in Leicestershire.

Sport

Change still in the air at Leicester ‘Nothing in sport should ever surprise you’ may be a well worn phrase but it is a truism that is particularly apposite for fans of most of the teams in the city of Leicester at the moment Leicester Tigers have recently parted company with long-time Director of Rugby Richard Cockerill. Aaron Mauger has taken over the reins on an interim basis while the club decide what their long term future holds. Certainly the Champions Cup campaign delivered only massive disappointment and emphasised that a period of rebuilding was needed. Since then, small steps forward have been made, while the signing of England fly half George Ford for the 2017-18 season gives a clear indication that the club’s ambition is still in good shape.

The genial Italian achieved the impossible for our city, guiding them to the Premier League title only months earlier and the announcement came the very day after the Foxes had competed in the knockout stages of the Champions League – the highestrated club fixture they had ever been involved with. A sad day and, inevitably, a very difficult decision for the owners to take, with the team hovering just one place above the relegation zone. Only time will tell, with the benefit of hindsight, whether it will prove to be the right move.

An even bigger news story is breaking as we pen this article: Leicester City have announced that they too have parted company with their manager Claudio Ranieri.

Gaining far less headlines, but delivering the greatest degree of change, is the complete rebuilding of the Leicester Lions team in readiness for the 2017 campaign.

108 | NICHE

Once again a new broom has delivered a clean sweep. Change is also in the air at Leicestershire County Cricket Club at both coaching and playing levels so the only place where things appear to be on an even keel is at Leicester Riders, where Rob Paternostro’s men continue to carry all before them in the BBL. The departures of Richard Cockerill and Claudio Ranieri in particular dominated both the local and national news headlines. Much of the reaction seemed to be based around terms like ‘sadness’, ‘shock’ and ‘surprise’ but perhaps that only serves to reinforce the old adage that we started this article with: ‘Nothing in sport should ever surprise you’ – indeed! Don’t forget

your wives and girlfriends! A joyous turn of events has taken place at Leicester Racecourse as a new event for the gents about town is announced So, the tables have turned. Leicester Racecourse have put together a new annual event that’s all about the boys. For years womenfolk have shone in the spotlight at Ladies Days’ across the country celebrating style and individuality whilst their husbands and boyfriends tagged along in the shadows so Rob Bracken, Manager of Leicester Racecourse, asks ‘how is this fair?’

strongman will test your strength against your mates. And a coconut shy will show just how straight your aim is.

He laughed: “I think it’s about time that the gents had a day to dazzle – they’ve been a bit left out everywhere – being a bloke is not that bad!”

Rob has Los Palmas 6, a Madness tribute band, ready to perform. Sax player Steve Turner played and recorded with Madness for over eight years and the other musicians are top class with experience in world tours and major festivals and have also played and recorded with other Ska and Punk giants such as Bad Manners, The UK Subs, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, The Hotknives and The Lee Thompson Ska Orchestra. Entertainment at the racecourse is, as always, top quality.

Despite thoroughly enjoying his Ladies Day events and getting involved in all the action every year, Rob noticed that although the guys have a great time betting on the horses and watching the racing as well as being there for some interesting entertainment lineups, the chaps definitely needed something to call their own. And so, we present to you Gent’s Day! Based on the same fashion, entertainment, and merriness that Ladies Day is, Gent’s Day will turn the racecourse into a watering hole for all the finest ciders and real ales, and gourmet street foods including much-loved classics such as pizza, burgers, and fish and chips. There will of course be a best dressed competition so try not to get ketchup or beer on your togs when you’re looking your most dapper and groomed self. All entertainment will be held indoors to avoid those all too often April showers. Also inside will be the manliest fairground you ever did see. A bucking bronco will be undoubtedly hilarious pre or post alcoholic beverages. A high striker

“Live entertainment will be in an indoor arena which is close to the racing and has plenty of indoor cover, bars, seating, so don’t worry if the weather is not on our side,” Rob explained.

Save the Date Saturday 29th April 2017 GENTLEMEN’S DAY At Leicester Races incorporating

KING RICHARD III STAKES Tickets on sale now

Pulling out all the stops for this one, Gent’s Day has been dedicated to one of the only three Saturday race meetings and will be part of the King Richard III Stakes Day, which is the only Grade 1 listed race. “It’s a very old race that used to be called the Leicestershire Stakes. It’s the type of race you have at Ascot and Cheltenham. You get a better standard of horse and the higher the grade of race, the more notice is taken of the horse.” He’s not expecting the numbers in attendance that Ladies Day receives, which had a record crowd of over 11,000 last year, but Rob said: “We’re kicking it off in style and we’re going to build it in to an even bigger event year on year!” Make sure you buy tickets online now to avoid disappointment!

Rugby triumphs The Leicester Tigers recently announced that they are re-signing England fly half George Ford at the end of the season from Bath with Freddie Burns going the other way and signing for bath. Things are looking up for the Tigers whose recent eight try victory of Bristol has helped lift spirits following the return of some key players for the tigers, though the jury is still out until they face a genuine contender. At the moment I’m coaching England in the U20s, which has been demanding and eventful to say the least. I am over the moon that we secured our third bonus-point win of the 2017 Six Nations with an eight-try 46-0 victory over Italy at the Northern Echo Arena. A lot of changes were made for this match, yet the players were able to take a flexible approach and adapt to keep on top right until the very end and that is a huge credit to this group. While I’m away I will always keep up with the Matt Hampson Foundation. Matt was a former U21s prop and after a life changing injury, he set up the foundation to support others devastated by sporting injuries. He was recently awarded an honorary degree from De Montfort University for his great work supporting his beneficiaries. Meanwhile, his Get Busy Living rehabilitation centre is coming along brilliantly with the help of local businesses. Louis Deacon

Gymnastics: for grown-ups! When was the last time you did a cartwheel? Gymnastics is nostalgic for us as we associate it with our childhoods – but why does it have to remain a thing of the past!? As we get older we get scared of things and let this hold us back and limit our capabilities, but no matter your state of fitness, I guarantee you will be able to do some form of gymnastics – and I will get a forward roll out of you. Not to worry though, our springboard floors will make manoeuvres much easier. For the first 45 minutes you’ll learn a variety of techniques from travelling to summersaults and the next 45 minutes you’re free to go wherever your confidence takes you. Have a go at some bar work or jumping in the foam pit and I’ll be there to guide you. Gymnastics is a fantastic way to improve your coordination, flexibility and strength. It’s a completely different way to go about improving your health and fitness and this is because it revolves entirely around fun! And in the family environment of the OLGC gym, at no point will you be judged, everyone is welcome.

Believe to achieve After many years of professional sport I’m so thankful for the positive mental attitude that it brings to my daily life and imprints itself in everything I do. A can do attitude is so important when it comes to being successful. I remember when our Leicestershire County Cricket Club Captain James Whitaker made us all write positive affirmations on Post-it notes to leave around the house in certain places that we visit frequently. I stuck them on the car gearstick, in my underwear drawers, kitchen knife and fork drawer and bathroom cabinet. From when I cleaned my teeth in the morning to when I cleaned them at night I was just on a constant drip feed of positivity throughout every day. Having your daily goals and life goals posted around the house always there to encourage me most certainly helped through tough times and good times.

Adult Classes, £8, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8pm – 9.30pm. No special footwear, clothing or kit needed, and you can walk through our doors with absolutely no gymnastics experience. Jon Mutch

Everything we do is driven by how we think and how positively we handle situations. I’m a huge believer in karma so having a positive attitude is extremely important because you never know who you’re talking to or helping. We all need to have humility and respect. We can all achieve great things but it will only be done by learning from our experiences and taking life forward. With belief in ourselves and others, we can and we will achieve our goals. Out & About Leicester’s entertainment and culture hub Curve has some pretty amazing shows lined up for us this spring, here’s a brief synopsis of our fave three.

Must-see at Curve Fifty years since the death of celebrated Leicester playwright Joe Orton, Artistic Director Nikolai Foster brings What the Butler Saw to the stage in a Made At Curve production of Orton’s final play, completed just a month before his untimely death. Dr Prentice (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), a psychiatric doctor in a private clinic, is attempting to interview – and seduce – would-be secretary Geraldine (Dakota Blue Richards – Curve’s A Streetcar Named Desire, The Golden Compass). Unwittingly surprised by his wife (Catherine Russell – Holby City), he hides the girl. The affairs multiply as Mrs Prentice is seduced and blackmailed by young bellhop Nicholas Beckett (Jack Holden – RSC’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), and promises him the secretarial post. When a government inspector arrives (Jasper Britton – The Libertine, RSC’s Richard II), closely followed by Sergeant Match (Ravi Aujla) who is in search of missing parts of Winston Churchill, chaos, crossdressing and mistaken identity lead 118 | NICHE

the charge. See this riotous racy comedy, where every word becomes a lie and madness soon becomes the norm March 3rd-18th. Don’t miss Bruce Guthrie’s brandnew production of the legendary, multi award-winning rock musical RENT as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. This exhilarating, landmark musical tells the thrilling story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive in New York City’s East Village in the thriving days of Bohemian excess. Cast includes Lucie Jones (Curve’s Legally Blonde The Musical, The X Factor, Les Misérables) and Layton Williams (Curve’s Hairspray, Bad Education, Billy Elliot The Musical). Inspired by Puccini’s classic opera La Bohème, RENT features unforgettable music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, including the much-loved songs Seasons of Love, Take Me or Leave Me and La Vie Bohème. Winner of four Tony® Awards, six Drama Desk Awards and the hugely prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it ran on

Broadway for an astonishing 12 years. March 28th – April 3rd. Boggis, Bunce and Bean, three greedy, smelly, horrid farmers hate the cunning Mr Fox. Mr Fox is smart and rather fantastic, but he doesn’t realise how determined the farmers are to get revenge. Can he hatch a plan to save his family and friends? Can they outrun the diggers and outsmart the farmers, and can Rabbit shut up long enough not to give the game away? Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox is a juicy tale of greed, pride and the power of friendship. This world premiere and flagship production for the Roald Dahl centenary celebrations promises a dahl-icious theatrical feast with live music and gloriumptious designs. A wondercrump treat for the whole family! Directed by Maria Aberg (As You Like It, Royal Shakespeare Company) and designed by Tom Scutt (A Number, Nuffield and Young Vic), this playful re-telling of Dahl’s brilliant and witty story will be a stunning stage spectacle. for viewers aged 5+, April 3rd-9th.

Driven by PASSION You know how much we love Leicester and how much we love to brag about everything our city has to offer, so you won’t be surprised to see that we’ve dedicated a section of Niche to some of Leicester’s local talent. Here you can read about a lady who will go down in sporting history, the emotional journey of a TV star chasing his next challenge, and the hardships of a singer songwriter and his return to the music scene. And what do they all have in common? They are all fiercely driven by their passions and they are all from Leicester! We get under their skin and unearth where their burning passions come from. Our city has produced a lot of talent and has long been associated with many famous faces. You’ll of course know that the Attenborough brothers who were educated in Leicester, and Rosemary Conley CBE, Gok Wan, and Kasabian are all from Leicester. But do you know of these other greats were from our shire too? ✦ Richard Armitage who played Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit ✦ Tom Joule who owns the clothing brand Joules ✦ Gary Lineker OBE who was a Leicester City footballer and the face of Leicester’s Walkers Crisps ✦ Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England for nine days ✦ Englebert Humperdinck, balladeer; you may remember his song Can’t Take My Eyes off You ✦ Thomas Cook ✦ Sue Townsend author of the Adrian Mole books ✦ Charlie Clapham appeared in Kick-Ass 2 ✦ Showaddywaddy pop group ✦ Mark Selby snooker champion ✦ Roger Pratt who worked his cinematography skills on Harry Potter films ✦ Jeremy Bulloch TV actor who wears the suit of Boba Fett in Star Wars Of course these few just scratch the surface of everything Leicester has offered to the world, King Richard III, Daniel Lambert, and ‘elephant man’ John Merrick also spent much of their lives here. We wish to inspire you and hope that you take something away from these pieces and realise that if you are passionate about something, then make it your own, take advantage of your love for it and make people proud of you, make history from it or start a career out it. 120 | NICHE

The COME BACK kid Local singer songwriter Jersey Budd emerges from the shadows to bring us his most earnest and honest release to date EMILY KIRTON reveals the harsh reality of today’s music industry Jersey is no overnight sensation, he’s a man who has really honed his craft. Having been through a host of career highs and lows, he’s travelled the UK’s gig circuit a fair few times and even played the Royal Albert Hall in support for fellow Leicester band Kasabian. But, he tells us, it’s only now that he has felt the right kind of creative freedom to release an album he is absolutely proud of. The Gathering Dust is authentic, original, mature and shouts of a man who is baring his soul with every note, we believe it, and it’s that effect which makes him especially chuffed; “Just recently, an old mate of mine heard the new songs and told me not to be offended but that these songs were the first time he could hear me in them, that he really felt the conviction of the words I was singing. It meant a lot to me, it really did. I haven’t purposely set out to give something more ‘real’, it just is. Life has happened, I have matured, got a family now and been through a fair few ups and downs; the album reflects this and it’s this that people seem to be getting into.”

After playing the big gigs, touring and collaborating with the likes of Kasabian, The Rifles and The Music, Jersey was making a name for himself. People outside of his home city started to pick up on him and then, like far too many genuine, creative artists in an X-Factor world, the support disappeared as quick as it arrived and Jersey found himself back at the start. With the backing of his family and friends he gathered a band, stopped gathering dust, and found his feet and passion for simply making music again. Working a day job then heading straight to the studio in the evenings and weekends, writing wherever and whenever the mood took him, Jersey poured blood, sweat, tears and his own cash into making an album he and his band would be proud of. “It wasn’t easy, but because of the effort it feels all the more sweeter when I play the album back. Honestly, the freedom to create what I wanted with it was really special and working with the band, vibing off of each other’s influences, we created an album that people

might not have expected. It’s a mix up of all sorts of styles and influences.” Proud of his Leicester roots, Jersey believes his city is a ‘magical place’ and that with all the attention the city has been getting recently the music scene is gathering momentum. If musicians from the city keep making an impact musically like they are throughout the UK and beyond, more local people will pick up a guitar, drum stick or microphone and embark on their own musical journey. “If more people learn instruments or write songs as a result of seeing me and the band play, well, my work here is done!” he enthused. “It doesn’t get much better than that in my eyes.” His own musical path began when he was just a lad at 10 years old, and through guitar practice and a huge love for the greats including Bob Dylan (all hail!), The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, he started writing his own stuff at 21. He said: “I have always written in the same way, it’s hard to explain how it happens but

I usually will be going about my day when a lyric will come to me and I will write it down on something nearby! Sometimes I can sit down with the intention to write a song and nothing happens but then other times a whole song will just come out of nowhere! These days I then take the song and melodies to the rest of the band and we all bring in certain elements to it, we all ‘decorate’ the chords and the backbone of the song to get the finished result.” The Leicester born and bred musician continued: “With The Gathering Dust I had the freedom to write and do exactly what I wanted, which meant that I could make music my way and through it I found my own place, my own style, a more mature sound and I couldn’t be happier with the result!” We hear you Jersey, literally, and this time, we reckon everyone else will too. New Album The Gathering Dust out now. jerseybudd.co.uk NICHE NICHE | 121 119

Throttling the British Motorcross scene An exciting twist to the world of Motocross has been put into action by local lass Vicky Marriott and her dad Howard - they’ve created the first ever women’s Motocross Championship in Britain Words Kerry Smith There are women-only championships all over the world and Vicky, 24, is one of Britain’s finest but after competing against ladies from all over Europe last year while achieving one of her goals of representing Great Britain, she quickly realised British girls needed to up their ante. With her dad, she set up the British Women’s Motocross Association (BWMA) for females 14 years and older.

amca.uk.com 122 | NICHE

“We’re affiliated to the AMCA so we went to a meeting and stood up in front of everyone and pitched it to them, and as its obviously such a male dominated sport we were worried they wouldn’t be interested,” Vicky said. It’s all been done before she told us but only by men half-heartedly. Women’s only races in the UK have let her down in the past; “I did a women’s series before and the guy who organised it capped it at 14 girls when there was a gate for 40 and then wanted to mix us up with the men! There are women only football teams so why not for motocross.” After seeing her dad race when she was 13, Vicky was inspired by a girl competing in the races. Howard quit racing to be able to fund his daughter’s passion and at 16 she decided to get a job to fund it herself. She now works at a financial advisory and on Saturdays works at 1st MX who give her a handy discount. She’s currently saving up for a 2017 Yamaha YZF250 from Red Line in Loughborough who are supporting her next year.

Enter or watch the action take place in Coppull, Lancashire 16th April for BWMA Round 1. Find more fixtures and enter at bwma-uk.com/fixtures And despite many injuries, Vicky won’t be put off. “Anything can happen to you no matter where you are so why not risk it doing something you love,” she laughed. The duo hope to improve women’s motocross by providing a structured pathway for the top three placing girls of this years BWMA series to the European Women’s Championship. Vicky hopes a cash prize of £1000 thanks to main sponsor Leicester welding equipment provider Westermans International, will encourage her racers to compete in all rounds, and Bel-Ray Oils will provide prizes at every round. Vicky says all BWMA sponsors will receive as much coverage through track banners and media reports as possible. Westermans International, Duck Smart and Bel-Ray Oils already have their names associated with this major turning point in British sporting history. Get in touch and get involved! “The girls are so much quicker in Europe so we need to show them what we’re capable of!”

Interrogating Charlie who? Ruthless TV show SAS: Who Dares Wins swallowed Charlie Krarup, or Charlie King as you might remember him, into an emotional cyclone and spat him back out defeated in the wilderness Words Kerry Smith All he had to do was keep his name a secret but when Wymeswolds’s Charlie was grilled for the final time, he shocked the shows ex-special force directors as he uttered ‘Charlie Krarup’ seeing him become the second series’ runner up to winner Moses Adeyemi. The 29-year-old showed winning potential until the final stage. I want to know why he exposed his true identity. “A bit of editing went on in the end. That moment where I said my name happened about seven hours into interrogation. They’d broken us all down and worked out where most of us had come from so it was only a matter of time before they found out who I was. I took the decision to tell the truth because then they could trust me and want to keep me alive,” Charlie struggles to admit. So, was the show a Bear Gryllstype setup? …Oh, admit it you’ve all suspected his whereabouts when the camera’s off. “It is 100 per cent real,” Charlie assures me. “That was the only thing they fiddled with. I wondered whether it would be quite

Charlie with his Father

Bear Grylls-esque but the production company were brilliant, they were so hands-off and left the directors to it.” Twenty-five men were thrusted into jungle life with Ecuador’s 95 per cent humidity, hard-core campaigns and shouty men (an understatement). But his biggest challenge by far was interrogation: “It’s so brutal. You’ve already spent nine days being smashed with no sleep and they’re mentally and physically beating you down and then they put you in this psychological environment and it’s so difficult to concentrate.”

It’s so brutal. You’ve already spent nine days being smashed with no sleep... As ‘a bit of a people pleaser’ Charlie says he’s not comfortable with confrontation unlike Moses who’s probably used to it being ‘a bit of a rogue’. “In that kind of environment you have to be there for each other and Moses and I had a bit of a bromance. The friendship process

is accelerated when you’re put into an environment like that because you’ve got no choice. And that kind of friendship – it’s real.” The beginning of a beautiful bond was certainly a bonus but why did the ex-Loughborough Grammar student really put himself through the SAS brutality? In one episode, a tear jerking moment showed Charlie confronted with this question as he struggled to open up about the passing of his dad. He explains: “I don’t think I’ve ever properly dealt with my dad’s passing and one of the things that came from that was I didn’t want to miss any opportunities and I’ve got to go out there and live because anything could happen.” Since being back in Leicester, the internet entrepreneur has been developing his website mychallengehq.com that brings together events for thrill seekers. Check it out to read more about his SAS escapade and find over 4,000 exhilarating events. Thanks Charlie King… I mean Krarup.

Arts & Culture in Leicester

Ooh, La La Land!

Honeymoon or holiday

Arty, farty?

With its record breaking Golden Globes haul, and record equalling 14 Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, Best Picture wins at the Producers and Directors Guilds, La La Land, a populist and poignant tale of love, loss and jazz/ hands, has faced an interesting backlash from cinema goers. Damien Chazelle scooped the top award at the Directors Guild of America for his follow up to 2015’s Oscar winning Whiplash. Charismatic leads, the Screen Actors Guild winner Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, the exuberant then quietly moving song and dance routines, the musical ballast of John Legend have all led to an ever growing crop of Awards.

With the exchange rate between the pound and both the Euro and US Dollar suffering a post-Brexit hangover, where can you go to find good value for money on your honeymoon or holiday this year?

There’s a huge stigma associated with art that makes people freeze and pull up the barriers in the same way some people freeze when asked a difficult maths question.

For great value for money South Africa is still high on the list. You will get 16 rand to the pound, and the cost of living is generally very low in any case. The most popular destination is Cape Town, usually combined with a drive along the famous Garden Route, which follows the coast along to Port Elizabeth passing some of the most spectacular scenery on earth, and a safari in the Kruger National Park.

A pretentiousness surrounds art which isolates people and makes them distance themselves in the same away a wine snob will try and make you feel foolish at a dinner party. But it’s just wine you either like the taste or you don’t. The same applies to art!

The knowing references to glorious cinema past and present have resulted in effusive praise from renowned critics the word over. The 89th Academy Awards on Sunday 26th February saw La La Land become one of the most decorated films in the history of cinema. And therein lies the problem: this tale of aspiring young actress and taciturn jazz musician and their choice to follow their hearts or their dreams left some audiences asking “what’s all the fuss about?”

The Far East, especially Malaysia, Bali and Thailand are all good value at the moment, perfect for a two centre holiday combining adventure and excitement with relaxing on an exotic beach. Closer to home, holidays to the Canary Islands are benefitting from some very keen pricing by the low cost carriers, allowing us to build your holiday ourselves, adding accommodation and transfers. Apart from us doing all the work, we use our first hand experience to get everything just perfect for you, and of course you are fully ABTA & ATOL protected.

Art is simply anything and everything. Be it created by nature or human, if it’s appreciated then it’s art. If it has evoked a passion, a distant memory or any emotion - then it’s art. It’s that simple. As a 70’s kid I get emotional when I see an old TDK cassette tape. I remember making mix tapes for friends. It drew an emotion so - its art. ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, and nothing sums up art more perfectly. Walk into a gallery with confidence, soak up the environment and the art you’re surrounded by (there’s a particularly good one in Lutterworth). If you’re drawn to a piece then take time to absorb and connect. Have an honest opinion. Make up your own mind.

There are always those who think they’re ‘interesting’ denouncing anything popular - they’re not. Some just don’t like musicals - fair enough. Some of Phoenix’s Talking Pictures Group felt ‘they were no Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers’ which is precisely why I, personally, love this new 21st century take on my beloved musical genre - Ooh, La La Land! Tracey Miller

Millington Travel is a forward thinking travel agent, our experienced and well travelled team can offer you first hand advice for the perfect honeymoon in paradise, as well as a well structured holiday bespoke for you. Sam Bell

Art is rudimentary, basically someone expressed their emotions on to a canvas or through clay or bronze. You’re the boss with art, you decide if you like it or not. Sara Lovatt

Memoirs of a

Composer Classical composer Martin Dalby has lived a cultured and inspired life that has allowed him to explore a vast world of musical possibilities, which cyclically, would never have been possible were it not for his immediate passion for the power of music since very early on in his childhood.

M

usic took Martin all over the world. His travelling with Accademia di Napoli, an Italian chamber orchestra gave him life changing experiences and lifelong memories, and his impressive career at the BBC was award winning and a source of guidance and encouragement for emerging artists. Working closely with Martin we have put together some extracts from throughout his lifetime that detail his array of outstanding achievements, and encapsulate the character of the composer behind the music. My father, John Dalby, was the organist of St Machar’s Cathedral in Aberdeen. He moved after being accepted for the job. The cathedral is incredibly famous being built in the 12th Century and the organ was a wonderfully fine organ built by Rushworth and Dreaper of Liverpool. Everyone should visit there; it’s in the quaint and beautiful Old Aberdeen. Some of the city had to be rebuilt, of course, having been bombed in the war and I can still remember it. I remember watching a dogfight and

126 | NICHE

thinking it was great! But obviously I had no idea what it all meant at the age of two. As a child I remember sitting at that organ in St Machar’s Cathedral with the full organ and the choir blasting away and it sounded thrilling and so exciting! But Martin believes this wasn’t the first time he was touched by music. Having such an infectious fascination with music at such a young age, Martin feels sure there was something more at play. My father would serenade my mother with the clarinet while I was in the womb before I was born in 1942. And it affected me – I can’t remember it obviously but no doubt it affected me! I believe this was my very first musical experience. During his teen years, Martin, perhaps unbeknown to himself, was finding his feet positioning himself to make a pathway towards a great career in classical music. My father despaired at my musicality and said I was no good! But my

music master David Murray at Aberdeen Grammar School told him, ‘stop, because he’s really quite good.’ It was a very good school, the great poet and politician Lord Byron was a pupil there once. Winning a foundation scholarship to the Royal College of Music in 1960, the composer in the making headed to London where his classical composing would evolve, but where it would also be threatened with an end before it even began. English composer Herbert Howells was my professor. He gave me everything he had and I adored him for his encouragement and faith in me. But there came an uneasy time for me in my final year at the college. Like most young men, I had had several girlfriends over the years but there was one young lady who my encounter with would cause problems. I took her out for dinner and she was lovely but a bit scatty so she missed her last train home so she stayed at mine in the spare room. Her father found out and tried to have me kicked out of the College. I

was very worried so explained it all to Howells. And you know what he did? He laughed uproariously. He told me: ‘If you’re going out and seeing girls well, you’re writing great songs so you carry on!’ Soon after, Martin left for Italy by train and joined the Accademia di Napoli orchestra, which he dedicated two years of his life to touring around Europe and North Africa with. His time in Italy was thanks to his winning of the Octavia Prize in 1963 and a Scottish Sir James Caird Travelling Scholarship. His life took a different path when his wealth of experience in the world of performance and composition caught the ears of the BBC. They appointed Martin as one of their Music Programme music producers in 1965; a channel that would later become known as Radio 3. The day after I returned I had an interview with the BBC. My friend’s father worked for the BBC and I joked to him about getting me a job – I didn’t expect to get an interview! When it came to the interview there

were lots of important men in suits and the great Hans Keller was one of them. On my first day, I saw him in his office and it was piled high with papers and scores and I said, ‘you’re busy, I’ll come back later’ and he said ‘no let’s have a beer.’ He gave me advice and guidance and for that I will always be thankful. I was the producer and hosted radio show Composer Portraits interviewing composers. My first victim, Sir William Walton, became a great friend of mine – I met many friends that way. After leaving the BBC in 1971 the established composer became a Cramb Research Fellow in composition at the University of Glasgow. But it was only a year later Martin was offered the job of Head of Music back at BBC Scotland. He went on to win a Sony Gold Award for producing it as well as having written music for many orchestras, church, radio and television. Speaking of his enchanting life that has been full of harmony, travel and people brings him to offer some thoughtful advice.

My job at the BBC was to support other artists. I ran a symphony orchestra with a producer to help me. I hope I inspired it. Part of the policy, which to an extent I inherited, was to give young people you’d never heard of a chance and get their career on the road. I think I achieved that. I made sure that we went for it but we didn’t take risks, we knew in our blood that this kid was going to be good and we were more or less right. A lot of them are still going now. For young artists now I would tell them: success is a bit like the pop world; you’re successful if you get the performances but that doesn’t mean to say your music is any good. And if you don’t get the performances, it doesn’t mean your music is bad. I received some advice when I was 23 in 1971. I was stuck and couldn’t get going. The late Hans Keller told me in his Austrian accent: “Get some manuscript paper. Put some notes on it. Any notes. It doesn’t matter but keep going!” martin-dalby.co.uk NICHE | 127

Leicester Cathedral far more than the tomb of a dead king!

Odds are the two main things you know about Leicester are the unbelievable 5,000-1 victory in the 2016 Premiership, and the incredible discovery of King Richard III The Foxes aren’t doing so well this season but the tomb of Richard III will remain in Leicester’s Cathedral for centuries to come. And you could be one of the tens of thousands still flocking to see it in 2017. Set in its own space, the Ambulatory, the striking simplicity of its design combines biographical and regal information on the black marble base with the strong Christian symbolism of the deeply incised cross in the lighter fossil-stone from Yorkshire. Just beyond, in St Katharine’s Chapel, the rich colours and storytelling of Tom Denny’s Redemption Windows, installed in 2016, inspired by the life and death of Richard contain local and universal stories to keep any visitor deep in thought and admiration. But the tomb of Richard III isn’t the only thing to captivate 200,000 people a year still visiting one of England’s smallest and least

endowed cathedrals. A church of St Martin has stood in the heart of this ancient city for over 900 years, and with the ruins of what may well have been a Roman temple found beneath in the 19th century, it’s possible this has been a place of worship for closer to two millennia. Look out for the medieval oak chest, carved from a single tree trunk, the unusual combination of the original, grand bishop’s chair (‘cathedra’) from the 1920s and its striking 2015 replacement. Then there’s the Leicestershire Regimental Chapel, with its memorials of campaigns from the Boer War onwards, and not forgetting the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1890s onwards, not least in four beautiful windows by Christopher and Veronica Whall. Indeed a visit to the medieval Guildhall next door is also highly recommended – and the

warmth and help of the Welcomers is frequently mentioned on Trip Advisor. So it must be true! Leicester Cathedral Revealed, an £11.3m project, will help to better tell the cathedrals story, meet visitor number demands, enable long-term repairs to stonework and infrastructure, transform the interior, and add a new heritage learning centre where the history and treasures of this ancient church can be displayed. Come to light a candle and pray see the tomb, take a moment to reflect – even speak to someone if there’s something on your mind. It’s an experience you will want to tell your friends about. A donation is asked as you leave – all of this does have to paid for after all! Open every day of the year, normally 8.30am – 6pm

2017 events calendar Run by local business leaders and entrepreneurs, the Trust holds high profile events raising funds for small charities across the East Midlands. Only in its fourth year, the Trust has established a reputation for delivering the region’s most prestigious social occasions. With each event raising tens of thousands and its landmark Annual Ball raising in excess of £129,000 last year alone, Star Trust is aiming to hit a fundraising milestone in 2017 with a target £500,000 total donations to local charities since its 2013 launch. This year’s calendar features three events to date, with a luxury networking evening at Graypaul Nottingham, a Drive and Dine day in Derbyshire and the Trust’s showcase Annual Ball event, held at Stapleford Park in Leicestershire. Star Trust co-founder Steve Hampson says: “We are thrilled to introduce our exciting and varied 2017 calendar. Star Trust has donated £332,000 to 33 local charities over the last three years and with so many fantastic events planned over the coming months, we’re confident that we will be able to exceed our half a million pounds overall fundraising target.

“Star Trust events have become synonymous with social occasions of outstanding quality and, just as importantly, lots of fun. They are always in high demand, with tickets selling out within days of going on sale, testament to the hard work of the committee and our fantastic supporters who donate so generously to help our local communities. “Star Trust is committed to supporting small charities who often can struggle to raise the funds they so badly need, and we are proud to be able to help these very worthy causes carry out the vital work they deliver in across our region. “We would urge any small, East Midlands-based charity that is seeking funds for a specific project to get in touch so that we can lend our support.” enquiries@star-trust.org.uk
