PHOENIX WINS PROCON LEICESTERSHIRE AWARD FOR CAPITAL EXPANSION PROJECT

Leicester’s independent cinema and arts centre, Phoenix, has been recognised at the prestigious ProCon Leicestershire awards, winning the award for Medium to Large Non-Residential Scheme of the Year at the county’s largest celebration of the built environment.

The winners were announced at the event on November 14 at King Power Stadium, attended by over 600 people, where Phoenix’s interim coCEO Sarah Vallance and Mike Dalzell, Leicester City Council’s Director of Tourism, Culture and Investment were presented with the trophy.

Now, as the founder of Sue Tilley Associates, Sue offers tailored services in strategic business development, economic innovation, and board-level advisory, providing the tools organisations need to thrive. The £8.5m capital expansion saw Phoenix double in size, and the venue now boasts four cinema screens, superb new galleries and a stylish Café Bar, plus a fabulous roof terrace and more spaces for making and learning. The project saw the construction of a new extension, alongside refurbishment of existing areas, to provide state of the art facilities for the communities of Leicester to enjoy, learn about and celebrate a diverse range of locally curated film and art in an inspiring and accessible environment.

ROOF MAKER MD WINS FORTY UNDER 40 AWARD

Kishan Bhogaita, managing director of Roof Maker Limited, designer, manufacturer and supplier of high performance rooflights and skylights, has been crowned the winner of the Forty under 40 Awards for 2024 in the manufacturing category.

The 40 under Forty Awards feature 40 business leaders all under the age of 40 from various backgrounds and industries who have demonstrated their skills and have climbed the ranks of their companies and industries.

Kishan was recognised for his blend of academic excellence, professional advancement, and impactful leadership which has propelled his career and contributed to impressive business performance.

Established in 2001, Roof Maker designs and manufactures all its products at its factory in Leicester, and currently has 55 employees. It’s a specialist manufacturer of contemporary high quality roof lights and lanterns for the new build, home improvement, heritage, and general specification and architectural markets.

In April 2023, Kishan assumed the role of managing director at Roof Maker where under his leadership, the company has experienced significant growth, even despite some challenging periods.

He said: “I am deeply humbled and grateful for this recognition, and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported me along

this journey.

“From my family, whose love and sacrifices have been my foundation, to my wife and son, who give me purpose and drive, and to my friends, mentors, colleagues, and everyone who believed in me – your encouragement has been invaluable. I also extend my gratitude to the event organisers and sponsors for celebrating young talent and inspiring us to strive for excellence.

“I’m grateful and proud of my team at Roof Maker – the passion and commitment the team brings to our shared vision – the relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation is inspiring and helps us drive growth in the business.

“Finally, congratulations to all the finalists – your achievements are inspiring, and together, we pave the way for others to realise their potential and dream big.”

Kishan’s commitment extends beyond his professional sphere, with him also actively nurturing the next generation of finance professionals and creating a culture of continuous learning and development, as demonstrated by his role as Chair of Governors at Mayflower Primary School.

Each year, the Forty under 40 Awards see a range of outstanding individuals chosen on a strict set of criteria, and Kishan’s combination of strategic leadership, dedication to mentorship, and impactful community involvement underscores this accolade.

NEW LEICESTER COLLEGE TECHNOLOGY HUB TO DELIVER GREEN LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Leicester College is set to open a new Green Technology Hub at its Freemen’s Park Campus in March. The Hub will feature state-of-the-art green tech equipment including air source heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage systems and EV charging stations. This will enable students, staff and employers to gain hands-on, practical experience with the latest green technology.

Nick Allen, Construction Area Manager at Leicester College said: “The UK currently faces a large green skills gap so the development of our Green Technology Hub represents a step in the right direction by helping to provide a new generation of skilled workers who can take advantage of the career pathways in the rapidly-growing UK green technology sector.

“This new Green Technology Hub development will provide an excellent opportunity for our current students, adult evening learners and for local employers who are looking to upskill their workforce.”

Impacts of Industry and Organisations on the Natural Environment.

The Hub is funded by the Government’s Local Skills Improvement Fund and will be fitted out by Quantum Training, a UK renewable training provider, which will also train Leicester College staff on the equipment.

Maria Gonella, Managing Partner at Quantum said:“Leicester College students will be among some of the first in the country to gain hands-on experience with green technologies, gaining a sound practical foundation in the basic principles of cleaner energy generation and energy saving technology.”

EAST MIDLANDS CHAMBER

East Midlands Chamber

Newsroom

President wins public vote for award

The chairman of East Midlands Chamber has been honoured with the inaugural President’s Award at the 2024 British Chambers of Commerce Awards.

Kevin Harris was up against representatives of some of the biggest Chambers, winning the award following a public vote.

It was created to recognise someone who has made a unique contribution to a Chamber through achievements such as improving the local business environment, championing diversity and inclusivity, building partnerships to stimulate growth, and inspiring colleagues through leadership.

Kevin said: “I’m absolutely delighted to receive this award, and it’s great to be its first recipient. It’s nice to win something that was voted for by the Chamber network.

“It’s been a real joy to be involved with the Chamber for the last 15 years

or so and seeing it move forward over that time.

“Being part of East Midlands Chamber since its inception and seeing it grow and develop has been a privilege and this is recognition not just for me but for the whole team. It’s a sign that the whole Chamber has been a success.

“Chambers of Commerce play a very important role in helping the business community and have a key role to play in helping the Government deliver its agenda and work even closer with business.”

Chamber chief executive Scott Knowles said: “Kevin’s work for East Midlands Chamber has been nothing short of exemplary and there are tens of thousands of people across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire that have benefited from the sheer dedication Kevin has given to impact their lives and the wider economy.”

Kevin announced his retirement from his position as partner at RSM UK’s Leicester office in November. He joined the Chamber board in 2013, was elected president in 2018 and became chairman in 2023.

Celebration of Culture and Communities extends event partnership

Following the success of East Midlands Chamber’s Celebration of Culture and Communities event in Leicester in 2024, it has decided to extend its partnership with business consultancy Sanjib 8 to help organise the 2025 evening.

The next Celebration of Culture and Communities event will take place on April 4, 2025, in Leicester and is expected to attract around 500 people from around the East Midlands.

The first celebration event took place in 2019 to recognise the diverse people and communities of the region, bringing together businesses and

charities from across Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Sanjib 8 managing director Sanjib Sahota said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with the East Midlands Chamber to deliver this special event.

“The event was just brilliant last time out and the response from people that attended the event and the reaction on social media has been fantastic.

“We have some exciting plans for the event in April in Leiceste; there will be some incredible entertainment and delicious food again.”

Recruitment of ex-offenders backed by East Midlands Chamber in partnership with Fair Chance Business Alliance

East Midlands businesses could be plugging gaps in their workforce by hiring people with a criminal record.

East Midlands Chamber is supporting a new jobs charter from the UK Fair Chance Business Alliance.

The alliance encourages businesses to open up recruitment and career progression to ex-offenders, providing employers with resources to safely and sustainably make the most of what they have to offer.

A recent ‘Go Live’ event set out the mission as well as plans for the future and promoted the businesses involved.

Chamber chief executive Scott Knowles said: “In our Quarterly Economic Survey six out of 10 respondents reported having difficulty finding suitable candidates to fill roles.

“The Chamber has supported prisons in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire on their employment advisory boards, so supporting the Fair Chance Business

Alliance and its ‘Go Live’ event to launch the charter is a natural progression that builds on that work.

“By embracing, not excluding those with a criminal record, businesses can really take advantage of the vast expanse of this talent pool.

“Widening the approach to employment would take the pressure off the recruitment process, increasing the number of skilled applicants and, ultimately, productivity.

“One of the best things about the charter is the way it can provide resources and training to employers that sign up to it, so I’d really urge any business that’s struggled with recruitment to consider joining the Fair Chance Business Alliance.”

East Midlands Chamber reacts to Employment Rights Bill

East Midlands Chamber has given its reaction to the new government’s Employment Rights Bill, which includes measures such as ending zero hours contracts and protecting workers against unfair dismissal.

Director of policy and insight Richard Blackmore said: “The timeframe in implementation of this new bill, consideration of sectoral differences and consultation with the business community is essential as changes are brought in.

“While reforming the protection of workers will likely help with staff

retention, it’s vitally important that there’s careful consideration for the challenges faced by businesses, still mired in the crisis in the cost of doing business.

“Flexible working, for example, to be standard ‘where possible’, as the government has said, is open to interpretation and that’s where you start to get ambiguity.

“Businesses need clarity and reasonable time to make changes. While it’s right that workers have security and fair treatment, the business community must be fully supported.”

 DIRECTOR OF POLICY AND INSIGHT RICHARD BLACKMORE

70 million Workdays a year are lost to stress, burnout and depression in the UK.

I have always struggled with my mental health, and when Strive was offered to me, I was at the worst point of my life mentally. I was sceptical due to trying different therapies before and nothing really working. However, after one meeting, I could tell this was different. Strive not only helps with mental health, but teaches you how to deal with anything and everything in the future.

I feel positive about my future for the first time, willing to try new things, put myself out into the world, and feel prepared for any stressors or situations which may come up in the future. The constant support from the team in such a non-judgemental atmosphere, has been my saving grace and I could not be more thankful that I decided to work with Strive.

I would recommend it to anybody who struggles with mental health, family and relationship issues, or self-confidence. This program has changed my practice at work to something supportive, positive and influential to my coworkers. I couldn’t be more thankful for the support Strive have given me.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IS MORE THAN JUST A DATE ON THE CALENDAR – IT’S A POWERFUL REMINDER OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS AND RESILIENCE OF WOMEN WORLDWIDE. THIS YEAR, TO HIGHLIGHT ITS IMPORTANCE, EMILY MILLER SAT DOWN WITH INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN IN LEICESTER, UNCOVERING STORIES OF TRIUMPH, PERSEVERANCE, AND ADVOCACY

International Women’s Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8, stands as a global tribute to the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. In 2025, the day provides an opportunity to reflect on progress made and to galvanise efforts toward achieving gender equality.

This year’s theme, ‘Equity in Action: Amplifying Women’s Voices’, highlights the importance of recognising diverse experiences, addressing systemic barriers, and ensuring every woman has the opportunity to thrive.

IWD is more than a date – it’s a call to action. Around the globe, it’s a moment to reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and commit to creating a fairer future. From the boardroom to the classroom, from grassroots movements to global policies, the achievements of women deserve celebration, but the work isn’t done.

This year’s theme resonates

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

deeply. ‘Equity in Action’ moves beyond equality to recognise that each woman’s journey is unique. True equity means addressing the specific hurdles faced by women of different backgrounds, cultures, and circumstances. It’s a powerful reminder that inclusion isn’t a onesize-fits-all endeavour.

From trailblazing entrepreneurs to activists fighting for social justice across the world, the women featured in this issue are testaments to the strength and creativity driving progress. Their voices echo the core message of IWD 2025: every woman’s story is vital, and amplifying those voices brings us closer to equity.

I’m so grateful to the incredible women who opened up and shared their journeys with me for this Niche feature. Their honesty, courage, and resilience remind us all why this day matters. Their stories inspire change, provide a sense of building one another up and what can happen to the world when we do.

HOW FEMALE LEADERS IN THE NHS SHAPED ONE WOMAN’S CAREER

In the 1990s, the National Health Service (NHS) was marked by a significant presence of female leaders as Service Directors. This female-led environment inspired Leicestershire businesswoman and cultural coach Minakshee Patel immensely.

Minakshee, an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, credits much of her career philosophy to the guidance she received from pioneering women in the NHS. “There were lots of female leaders in the NHS at that time in my career in HR,” she recalls, “and when the NHS started to become a more business-based environment, more males came in. It was the female leaders in high up positions that cultivated a supportive, growth-focused environment that deeply influenced my own approach to leadership and consulting today.”

Reflecting on her mentors’ styles, Minakshee emphasises her commitment to guiding with empathy. “When you make human errors, I will support you as that’s how you learn. If you

keep making the same error, then we can’t move forward, we don’t develop, and we don’t grow,” she explains. This idea of learning through mistakes while maintaining accountability was a hallmark of the female-led HR environment she experienced in the ’90s.

Today, Minakshee strives to carry forward these values, believing that “as a good leader, you need to inspire your team to do better, to develop and move on, or you aren’t doing your job.”

By nurturing talent and emphasising growth, those NHS leaders helped create a resilient, inspiring entrepreneur in her, and she now continues their legacy of empowerment through her consultancy work.

“When I worked at the NHS I progressed from an Assistant Personnel Officer position to an Associate Director of HR and that was due to these women. Empowerment is the word; it’s so important that we feel inspired and supported by each other, for ourselves and future generations.”

The drive for a better future

Growing up on a council estate, conveyancer and business owner

Surekha Mall’s early years in that environment shaped her outlook on life and inspired her aspirations. Her story is all about her ambition, good old fashioned hard work and an unwavering determination to succeed.

Surekha’s legal career began at the bottom of the ladder. With university not an option, she was determined to gain experience to work her way up, and she starts by telling me she worked for free at a law firm for 11 months while simultaneously studying to become a legal executive at college.

“To support myself financially, I juggled weekend jobs, often working long hours with little rest. It wasn’t easy,” she admits. “There were days I felt completely drained, but I kept reminding myself why I was doing it. I knew the struggle would be worth it.”

“A lot of my determination was to break the ‘council estate’ mould,” she recalls, reflecting on her upbringing. These experiences fuelled her resolve to build a career that would bring stability and opportunity – not just for herself, but for her family as well.

Her extended family played a key role in sparking her ambition. “I had cousins and relatives, with careers that gave them stability and opportunity,” Surekha explains. Seeing their success motivated her to carve out a similar path for herself, even though she knew it wouldn’t simply arrive at her feet. “I wanted that for myself, and I knew I would have to work for it,” she says.

However, her path to success was anything but straightforward. What she lacked in resources, though, she made up for with an exceptional work ethic, a trait she

credits to her mother, who worked tirelessly as a nurse to support the family. “My mum showed me that hard work and perseverance are a part of life,” Surekha says. Following this example, she committed herself fully to pursuing her goals, no matter how many sacrifices were required.

Today, she is the proud self-employed consultant, a venture she created to provide the work-life balance she always envisioned. Her daily routine is nothing short of extraordinary – she starts her day at 4 am, completing the majority of her work before her young daughter wakes up. “It works for us; I get most of my work done so I can start the day on top and I still have time for her,” she explains.

Surekha’s journey is about more than professional success; it’s about breaking cycles and creating opportunities. “Growing up, I didn’t see many people in my position who came from where I did,” she shares. “Ultimately, I want my children to grow up in a different environment than I did. I hope my story shows that with determination and hard work, you can achieve your goals, no matter where you start.”

Her story serves as a reminder that success isn’t just about opportunity – it’s about vision, resilience, and the courage to pursue a better future.

EMMA BURDEN, SALLY BARNETT AND HANNAH FOUNTAIN

The women barristers of 2 New Street

Inside the historic walls of 2 New Street in Leicester, some of the team of women barristers are not just breaking legal ground but also dedicating their time to shaping the future of the community.

Among them are Sally Barnett, Emma Burden, and Hannah Fountain, three professionals balancing thriving careers with voluntary commitments that highlight their passion for making a difference.

EMMA BURDEN: SUPPORTING FAMILIES THROUGH JUSTICE

A family law specialist, and Head of Chambers, Emma brings her experience and compassion to the Leicester and Leicestershire Family Justice Board. Her work there focuses on training and education for all those involved in the Family Justice System in Leicester and Leicestershire.

“Being on the board is a way to ensure the system works better for everyone, particularly children,” Emma shares. “It’s one thing to represent clients in court, but through this role I can address systemic issues that affect outcomes for families across Leicester.”

Emma speaks passionately about the importance of her dual roles. “As women, we bring empathy and a collaborative spirit to the table. Our ability to juggle multiple commitments is not a weakness – it’s a strength. By contributing to boards like this, we’re actively shaping the society we want for our children.”

SALLY BARNETT: GIVING TIME FOR EDUCATION

Established barrister Sally has a formidable reputation in family law. She also wears another hat as a Board member of North Warwickshire South Leicestershire College (NWSLC). For Sally, this role is deeply personal.

“Education is transformative,” she explains. “Being a part of the college board allows me to contribute to shaping the lives of

young people in Leicestershire. It’s about opening doors for those who may not know what’s possible.”

Sally credits her legal expertise for the value she can give to the board, although it is a steep learning curve nonetheless. “As barristers, we’re trained to think critically and weigh up evidence – skills that are invaluable when considering policy decisions or reviewing the college’s performance.

“Women have the capacity to stretch themselves, to balance the demanding and the meaningful. Once we commit, we’re incredibly dedicated and capable of moving things forward.”

HANNAH FOUNTAIN: LEADING ON COMMUNITY LEGAL SERVICES

For Hannah, a formidable member of the family law team in chambers, being a member of the Leicester Community Advice & Law Centre (LCALC) Board exemplifies her commitment to access to justice.

LCALC provides vital specialist advice and casework regarding debt, housing, welfare benefits and immigration to those who would otherwise be unable to access it.

“On a daily basis, I see the importance of people having access to legal advice and support. I observe first-hand the impact of that support not being available to those who are most in need. Being a member of the Board for LCALC is one way that I can help to support this crucial work for those who might otherwise fall through the cracks.”

Hannah’s pragmatic approach and dedication are evident both inside and outside of the traditional legal setting. “By being active in organisations such as LCALC, we can amplify our impact on the most vulnerable members of our local community.”

EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH ACTION

For these women, the key to balancing a career and community work lies in commitment and vision. Their stories are a testament to the fact that women can stretch themselves to pursue professional excellence while also giving back.

Women not Outnumbered

he accounting profession, historically associated with precision, analytical expertise, and strategic foresight, is undergoing a vital transformation, fuelled by the strengths that diversity and equity bring to leadership. As organisations increasingly recognise the imperative of inclusivity, the rise of women to partner roles is reshaping the industry’s landscape.

Women bring invaluable perspectives to leadership, championing collaboration, introducing innovative approaches to problem-solving, and making deeper connections with diverse client bases. This evolution not only enhances decisionmaking but also drives meaningful innovation, making firms more adaptable and forward-thinking.

Mark J Rees LLP, a trusted leader in accounting since 1938, is proud to champion this progress by promoting two remarkable women, Ruth Cox and Elena Waddingham, to partner roles. Ruth and Elena began their journeys as trainee accountants and, through mentorship, advocacy, and their

own resilience, rose to become chartered accountants and managers.

This expansion of the partnership underscores Mark J Rees’s commitment to pursuing diverse perspectives and ensuring clients benefit from leadership attuned to the complexities of modern business. “We are very excited to embark on this journey as the first female partners at Mark J Rees. Becoming a partner means not only an advancement in our careers, but setting an empowering example for our own children and also other female professionals, demonstrating that women can thrive both at home and in the workplace.

“Our goal is to continue to provide our clients with the exceptional service they are used to, whilst also looking to grow the partnership and encourage other women in our position to achieve their potential, ” Ruth told me.

Resilience and reinvention

During a quick chat with Jay Webb, I remember from previous conversations how she embodies resilience, determination, and an unshakable belief in the power of reinvention. One of nine children, Jay learned early the value of adaptability and courage. At 38, she made a bold decision that would define her legacy – to pursue a degree in Human Resources (HR). This leap of faith eventually led her to manage the HR policy section of one of the world’s most complex transport networks – the London Underground.

Jay’s career journey didn’t stop there. Four career moves later and armed with experience and a passion for people, she took another daring step – founding her own HR consultancy. This venture allowed her to channel her expertise and unique approach to leadership into empowering businesses and individuals. “What’s the worst that can happen?” she often says, a mantra that has guided her through every pivotal moment of her life.

Her courage extends beyond career risks. Not long ago,

Jay faced a severe illness so dire that doctors suggested she sign a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order. True to form, she refused. With the same tenacity that propelled her career, she fought through and survived, emerging even more determined to make an impact.

Jay’s story is a testament to the power of embracing change and taking risks, no matter how daunting. Whether stepping into university classrooms as a mature student, navigating the challenges of managing large workforces, or launching her own firm, she has proven that life’s biggest transformations often come from fearless leaps into the unknown.

In a world often hesitant to change, Jay inspires us all to ask: What’s the worst that can happen? The answer, as Jay shows us, is often not something bad, but something extraordinary.

A path to true health with empathy at its core

Doing life with more compassion’ isn’t just a phrase for Dr Zina Alhilali – it’s the essence of who she is. When I spoke with her, I couldn’t help but feel the sincerity and warmth in her voice as she shared her journey into healthcare and the deeply personal reasons behind her mission.

Dr Zina Alhilali has dedicated her heart and soul to helping others live fuller, healthier lives. As a physician and advocate for true wellness, she has created a unique practice in Leicester that goes far beyond medicine. It’s a space that feels alive with care, compassion, and a genuine belief in each person’s ability to thrive.

Her story is as inspiring as her work. Four years ago, she and her family – her husband (also a doctor) and their children – moved from Sweden, seeking new horizons. But their journey wasn’t just about exploration; it was about purpose. Dr Alhilali felt a deep calling to come to the UK to create something extraordinary – a practice that places empathy at the heart of healing.

“To me, treating symptoms isn’t enough,” she shares, her passion evident. “Healing is about going deeper, finding the roots of pain, both physical and emotional, and bringing about real, lasting change.” Her voice softens as she explains, “I want to be more than a doctor. I want to be a companion on my patients’ journeys to health.”

For Dr Alhilali, wellness is not just about the body,it’s about mind and spirit too. Her practice reflects this belief, addressing chronic pain, stress, and anxiety in ways that honour the whole person. Her goal isn’t merely to relieve discomfort; it’s to help her patients build the kind of health that can carry them through life with strength and joy.

“Health isn’t just about a quick fix,” she says with conviction. “It’s about laying the groundwork for a lifetime of vitality.” And that’s exactly what her patients find. In her practice, they don’t just get care, they gain knowledge, confidence, and the tools to take control of their well-being. “I give my patients what they deserve: time, understanding, and unwavering support.”

What makes Dr Alhilali’s approach so profound is the depth of her empathy. She has walked through her own struggles, life-altering challenges and personal trauma, and come out the other side with a deeper understanding of what it means to heal. Her own experiences have shaped her into a physician who truly sees the person behind the diagnosis.

HEALING IS ABOUT GOING DEEPER, FINDING THE ROOTS OF PAIN, BOTH PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL

Her care and compassion ripple far beyond the walls of her practice. Dr Alhilali works closely with charitable organisations, pouring her time and resources into communities that need them most. She is also a powerful advocate for mental health, using her voice to champion the needs of young people in particular.

“Young people today are under so much pressure,” she says, her words filled with both urgency and care. “It’s up to us to provide them with the tools to protect their mental health and take their struggles seriously. These aren’t just ‘growing pains’. Their well-being matters.”

Through her words, her work, and her unwavering commitment to compassion, Dr Zina Alhilali is redefining what it means to care for others. She reminds us all that healing is not just a science, it’s a partnership, a journey – and above all, a profound act of love.

Bringing colour to construction

In a traditionally male-dominated industry, Susie Grantham has carved out a remarkable career in construction and BID writing, proving that confidence and individuality can drive success. With an infectious energy, she shattered stereotypes, grew professionally, and inspired others.

Her journey to becoming a successful female business owner is a testament to adaptability, personality and passion. From her early aspirations in drama to thriving in the construction industry – a traditionally male-dominated field –her story is one of courage and determination.

When Susie finished school, her dreams were set on studying drama in America. However, life had other plans. Her mother’s illness required her to stay close to home. “I felt like I couldn’t leave her when she needed me most,” she reflects. This pivotal moment shaped her early career choices. Instead of pursuing her original ambitions, she took on various jobs –simply to have work. One opportunity, however, would define the next phase of her career.

What began as a short-term role for a surfacing company based at Mountsorrel quarry became a seven-year tenure that proved transformative. “My focus was always on doing the best job possible, and I found that my work spoke for itself.”

During her time at the quarry, she developed extensive expertise in BID writing, a skill that would become the cornerstone of her later ventures in large scale infrastructure tunnelling and major projects such as HS2 and Thames Tideway Tunnel. She thrived under pressure, balancing the demands of competitive environments, sometimes being the only woman in the room, while carving out her space as creating a more collaborative approach in the industry.

When family life beckoned, Susie decided to pivot again. Inspired by her hard-working parents, who ran their own florist business, she made the bold choice to start her own company, SGS Hub. “My parents showed me that you could turn your passion into a livelihood. It was their example that encouraged me to take the leap.”

Despite her professional success, Susie remains deeply grounded. She emphasises the importance of following one’s passions and embracing life’s unexpected turns. “Life takes you to interesting places if you go for it and don’t let anything hold you back,” she says, offering advice to aspiring entrepreneurs

and young women navigating their careers.

In addition to her business endeavours, she has her sights set on giving back to causes close to her heart. As the adoptive mother of two children, she is passionate about supporting charities that focus on adoption. She is exploring ways to provide free BID writing services to organisations in this space. “Adoption has been such a blessing in my life. If I can use my skills to help charities that support families like mine, it feels like coming full circle.”

Susie’s story is a reminder that life’s twists and turns often lead to unexpected success. By embracing challenges and staying true to her values, she has built a career and a life defined by purpose, perseverance, and giving back. Find out more about her work at sgshub.co.uk.

Empowering women all over the world

Zinthiya Ganeshpanchan, a dedicated humanitarian and social entrepreneur, has become a transformative force for women in some of the world’s most deprived regions. Her community-based initiatives empower women with education, practical skills, sustainable livelihoods and therefore an enduring sense of self-worth.

One of Zinthiya’s core missions is to help women in deeply deprived areas gain skills that can provide economic benefits, as well as make a lasting impact in their communities. Her projects are multifaceted, tackling issues that affect the daily lives of women. She tells me: “I have never been one for believing in the plaster approach to problems – short term plasters never work, they don’t stick long enough for me!”

And so, her work focuses on equipping women with the tools they need to gain financial stability as well as improve health and wellbeing, addressing some of the most pressing issues faced by them in these regions.

In Nepal, for example, Zinthiya partnered with a project to provide sustainable, reusable menstrual underwear. “This initiative not only addresses the urgent need for menstrual health products, which are often unavailable or too expensive for women in rural communities, but also create opportunities for women to share their learnings, their new skills, and economically benefit too for a long-term approach to lasting change,” says Zinthiya, underscoring her commitment to sustainable empowerment.

In Madagascar, Zinthiya has initiated projects focused on sewing, making reusable sanitary panties and soapmaking to support health and hygiene, in an area lacking basic sanitation facilities. Through these projects, women are taught essential skills and encouraged to start their own small-scale businesses. Not only does this create a reliable source of income, but it also promotes the importance of hygiene and cleanliness within their communities, reducing the prevalence of preventable diseases.

While focusing on building essential skills, Zinthiya also focuses on improving education in rural communities and has initiated a library in Madagascar as well as providing support to schools in Nepal and Sri Lanka. “Education is a key element to combating poverty”, she emphasises

Zinthiya’s most recent initiative is partnering with X-Cel Plus project in Ghana that supports small-scale entrepreneurs by providing loans for essential resources to create businesses that benefit them and their communities. Unlike traditional models, through this partnership she is emphasising “accountability with the interest on investments put back into

I HAVE NEVER BEEN ONE FOR BELIEVING IN THE PLASTER APPROACH TO PROBLEMS –SHORT TERM PLASTERS NEVER WORK

the community for welfare projects”. This approach improves the health and well being of women while also strengthening local economy. It’s a model of community-driven, sustainable growth based on accountability and empowerment.

Her and her organisation She Inspire’s approach is unique in its commitment to long-term, proactive empowerment rather than temporary relief. By training women in practical skills and encouraging them to form their own small businesses and improving educational facilities, she creates resilience and independence, helping to shape a more equitable world for women-one project, one woman, and one community at a time.

Her work reminds us that even in the most challenging circumstances, sustainable change is possible when communities are empowered from within.

Borderless limits to global success

When I meet Suja Shyamsundar, the woman behind 4S Business Support, her warmth and determination immediately stand out. Sitting down with her, it’s clear that her journey to becoming a successful business owner is as inspiring as it is unconventional.

Suja was born in India, where she earned a prestigious degree and trained rigorously in her field. The child of a teacher and a professor, for her, education was in her blood.

“Education has always been a cornerstone of my life,” she explains. “I was passionate about learning and dedicated to achieving as much as I could.” Her aspirations, however, took a sharp turn when she moved to the UK with her husband.

“I came here full of dreams, expecting to build on my education and experience,” Suja recalls. “But I soon discovered that my qualifications were void. It was like starting from scratch in a foreign land, and that was a hard pill to swallow.”

RAISING CHILDREN WITH A BUSY WORKING HUSBAND REQUIRES PATIENCE, LOVE, AND CONSTANT LEARNING

overwhelming, but those moments also taught me the power of perseverance and doing the best for my family.”

Balancing the demands of parenting with the ambition to start her own business was no small feat. “I trained to be a Mortgage Advisor, working around family life – I loved it.”

Then, however, the financial crisis hit, and her business started to struggle, “I started work for in the wealth management sector where I had the opportunity to start and build the outsourcing unit in India and manage several teams across both continents.”

Undeterred, she rolled up her sleeves and began working her way up. Her first management role was at Safeway, a job she describes as both humbling and empowering. “It taught me resilience and adaptability. Every challenge was an opportunity to prove to myself that I could do it.”

Her next big break came with BT Openreach, where she climbed the ranks. Along the way, she and her family moved frequently forging new paths. “Each move was like stepping into a new adventure,” Suja says with a smile. “It kept life exciting and full of possibilities.”

Suja and her husband also expanded their family, “Raising children with a busy working husband requires patience, love, and constant learning. There were moments when it felt

After witnessing the success of her venture, Suja recognised its potential and was inspired to extend the opportunity to other SMEs, enabling them to access global skilled talent to scale and grow. “Starting 4S Business Support was a leap of faith. It was a balancing act juggling my family’s needs and managing the household and building a business from the ground up.”

Suja’s vision is for SMEs to scale and thrive by leveraging global talent through a managed, cost-effective outsourcing model. ‘Global talent isn’t just for the big players – it’s the key to unlocking success for businesses of all sizes,’ she says. Her mission is to help SMEs overcome resource constraints, enhance productivity by taking advantage of global timeframes, and ultimately compete on a larger scale.”

Suja’s story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the belief that challenges are stepping stones to global success. “If there’s one thing I have learnt it’s that the sky is the limit – borders aren’t barriers for business!”

YOUR INSIDE TRACK ON LEICESTER’S LOGISTICS AND MANUFACTURING MOVES

Amajor logistics and industrial development in Enderby is poised to create around 2,000 permanent jobs, following approval for the Enderby Logistics Hub.

Located near Junction 21 of the M1, the 83-acre site will offer over 1.1 million square feet of commercial space, including warehouses, offices, and a specialised training centre aimed at addressing skill gaps in the logistics sector.

The £90m project, led by the Drummond Estate and The Inverock Trust, is expected to inject £200m into the local economy. It also includes plans for the Enderby Relief Road, designed to reduce traffic in the village.

LEICESTERSHIRE’S VISION FOR TRANSPORT

Leicestershire County Council has shaped a plan for its transport network for the future, unveiling an ambitious blueprint for sustainable mobility. The county’s fourth Local Transport Plan (LTP4) lays out a long-term vision to 2050. The plan is structured to support Leicestershire’s economic growth while meeting the evolving needs of its residents and businesses.

LTP4 will roll out in three strategic phases:

Phase 1 (up to 2030)

Currently in development, this phase will focus on identifying key transport challenges across the county and setting a strategic vision. The LTP4 Core Document, expected by September 2024, will define core themes and policies aimed at delivering transport solutions through a variety of funding streams.

Phase 2 (up to 2040)

Between summer 2024 and spring 2026, the full LTP4 will take shape. This phase will introduce targeted strategies, including freight, logistics, and aviation plans. Local Multi-Modal Area Investment Plans will be developed in partnership with communities to meet specific regional needs, fostering local growth by supporting housing and employment opportunities.

Phase 3 (up to 2050)

Beginning in summer 2024 and running through to 2026, this phase will focus on monitoring and reviewing the plan’s progress. It will ensure flexibility to adapt to technological innovations, shifts in travel behaviour, and changes in national policy.

Looking Ahead

By 2050, Leicestershire County Council envisions a modern, efficient transport network that enhances quality of life, drives economic growth, and supports environmental goals.

BRITVIC INVESTS £25M TO UPGRADE NATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTRE

Britvic, the FTSE 250 global soft drinks business, is celebrating the opening of its upgraded national distribution centre in Leicestershire, following £25m of investment. The site supplies national and international customers with much-loved soft drinks including Robinsons, Tango and J2O.

A recent investment of £20m, following £5m committed to the Lutterworth site over the last three years, has resulted in significant improvements and updates to the technical systems and facilities necessary for efficient warehouse and logistical operations.

As a result of the investment, the site now has 17 new automatic cranes, 18 despatch lanes to load lorries from and 20 automated cars to transport pallets around the warehouse – with the capacity to move 600 pallets an hour from the warehouse to its customers.

Nigel Paine, Supply Chain Director at Britvic, said: “I am delighted that we have completed the renovation of our national distribution centre in Lutterworth.

“This cutting-edge facility enables us to continue offering our customers the wide range of Britvic products they love, while also providing our employees with a dynamic work environment that supports their best

performance.”

Over the course of a normal year, 75,000 trucks, carrying 1.9m pallets to over 900 locations pass through the distribution centre’s security gatehouse. This investment will see more trucks through the gates to accommodate the increased pallet numbers.

As part of the investment, the distribution centre offers refreshed office and meeting spaces, in line with Britvic’s Working Well approach to flexible working, ensuring a modern and comfortable working environment where employees and visitors can collaborate.

The site now has 10 brand-new electric vehicle charging stations for employees, including a new 47kw Direct Current fast charger.

Britvic’s national distribution centre has been based in Lutterworth for 30 years and employs more than 80 people.

This is the latest in a string of investments that form Britvic’s ongoing commitment to its supply chain, including £40 million in its Rugby factory over the past two years, which has seen the installation of a fifth canning line at the factory, and £8 million invested in a heat recovery system at its Beckton factory in London, cutting factory emissions by an estimated 1,200 tonnes annually.

EMBRACING AI AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

As someone actively working with businesses in Leicestershire, I felt it was high time to explore the buzz around artificial intelligence (AI) to understand its potential and the implications for business. So I have recently taken part in a highly insightful course funded by Innovate UK and delivered by Loughborough College, in partnership with the Institute, which had a keen focus on AI’s practical applications.

I’ll admit, I’m both excited and a little cautious about the transformative power AI could bring to businesses in all sectors and sizes. While it promises incredible efficiency, I’ve already learned that AI isn’t infallible. It sometimes ‘fills in the blanks’ with educated guesses, which can lead to errors. This has made one thing clear: as users, we must approach AI critically, questioning its output and ensuring decisions are well-informed. Here’s my perspective on the benefits and challenges as AI begins reshaping the logistics sector.

AI SYSTEMS CAN DETECT ANOMALIES, SUCH AS TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS IN PERISHABLE GOODS OR UNEXPECTED DELAYS

Boosting efficiency and driving innovation

AI offers immense potential to streamline logistics operations. Routine tasks like inventory tracking, route optimisation, and fleet management can be automated, freeing up time and resources. AIdriven tools can assess real-time conditions – such as traffic, weather, or fuel costs – to suggest the most efficient delivery routes, cutting costs while improving reliability.

Predictive analytics is another significant benefit. By forecasting

LOGISTICS AND MANUFACTURING

demand with greater accuracy, businesses can optimise stock levels, warehouse operations, and delivery schedules. AI can even account for global supply chain disruptions, helping logistics companies stay resilient in an unpredictable environment.

Real-time monitoring is particularly exciting. AI systems can detect anomalies, such as temperature fluctuations in perishable goods or unexpected delays, and alert operators instantly. This ensures goods are handled with care, building trust with customers and boosting reputation – a crucial factor for smaller businesses looking to compete.

AI also drives innovation by revealing trends and insights hidden in data. It can identify opportunities for improving operations or tailoring services to meet evolving customer needs. For forwardthinking businesses, AI represents an opportunity to lead the way in designing smarter, more responsive logistics solutions.

Navigating the challenges

That said, AI isn’t without its challenges. One major concern is job security. The logistics sector relies on skilled drivers, warehouse staff, and planners, so there’s understandable apprehension about whether AI will replace certain roles. However, rather than eliminating jobs, AI is more likely to change them, creating demand for new skills such as AI system management and data analysis. Upskilling will be key to helping workers

adapt while ensuring people remain at the heart of operations.

The financial investment required to implement AI is another hurdle, particularly for small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). However, support is available through initiatives like Innovate UK or the Made Smarter programme. Collaborative efforts, where businesses share resources and insights, can also help make AI adoption more accessible.

Data protection is another critical issue. AI relies on vast amounts of data, making cybersecurity a top priority to safeguard sensitive information. For all businesses, not just those in the logistics sector, maintaining customer and partner trust will require robust systems to ensure data security.

The road ahead

AI offers enormous potential for business, but success will depend on a careful and collaborative approach. By working with local businesses, educational institutions, and government bodies, we can foster innovation while preparing our workforce for the future.

Used wisely, AI can drive efficiency, adaptability, and growth, ensuring the East Midlands remains a leader in logistics. For those looking to explore AI, two new cohorts for the course I attended ‘Transform your Business With AI and Digital Technologies’ are due to start in January – an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience and give your business a competitive edge.

Breaking through the ceiling

BUSINESS LEADERS ARE EXPECTED TO STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN DRIVING SUCCESS AND CULTIVATING A HEALTHY WORKPLACE CULTURE. THIS DUAL ROLE CAN BE AS DEMANDING AS IT IS REWARDING. EMILY MILLER SPOKE WITH A BUSINESS COACH AND ADVISOR, ABOUT OF THE EVOLUTION OF LEADERSHIP

Leanne Bonner-Cooke MBE is no stranger to the highs and lows of business. A serial entrepreneur with over 35 years of experience in business and technology, Leanne has built a reputation for driving success, empowering leaders, and championing women in business. Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with her to discuss her journey, the challenges facing today’s entrepreneurs, and her vision for the future.

Emily: Leanne, you’ve achieved so much in your career – founding businesses, mentoring leaders, and even receiving an MBE. What drives you?

Leanne: For me, it’s about making an impact. I’ve always been passionate about innovation and people. Whether it’s launching new ventures like LBC Mentoring or co-founding Shine Together CIC, my focus is on creating opportunities for others to grow and succeed. Business isn’t just about profit; it’s about leaving a legacy and making meaningful change.

E: You’ve worked with countless leaders over the years. What’s the one piece of advice you give most often?

L: Invest in yourself and your team. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about asking the right questions and surrounding yourself with people who challenge and support you. A strong team with a shared vision can overcome any obstacle. I also tell leaders to stay curious. In today’s fast-

paced world, adaptability is everything. If you’re not evolving, you’re falling behind.

E: Speaking of obstacles, what’s the toughest challenge you’ve faced as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

L:Raising £5M for e-bate Limited was a defining moment. It wasn’t just about securing the funding; it was about proving the value of our vision to investors. It took resilience, preparation, and a willingness to pivot when necessary.

E: You’ve mentored many leaders. Why do you think mentorship is so powerful?

L: Mentorship accelerates growth in a way that no textbook or course ever can. It’s about real-world experience and having someone in your corner who has walked the path before you. What I love most is seeing mentees gain clarity and confidence. They come to realise that they don’t have to navigate challenges alone, and that’s a game-changer.

WHAT

I LOVE MOST IS SEEING MENTEES GAIN CLARITY AND CONFIDENCE

E: You recently launched LBC Mentoring Ltd and co-founded Shine Together CIC. Can you tell us more about these initiatives?

L: Shine Together CIC is a community initiative aimed at empowering women and underrepresented groups. It’s about creating a space where everyone has a chance to shine, regardless of their background.

E: Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

L: Don’t wait for the ‘perfect’ time. It doesn’t exist. Start with what you have and build from there. And remember, success doesn’t happen in isolation. Seek out mentors, build your network, and always keep learning.

Leanne’s insights are as inspiring as they are practical. Her journey proves that with determination, adaptability, and the right support, there’s no limit to what entrepreneurs can achieve.

A better way to separate

DIVORCE HAS LONG BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH CONFLICT. COURTROOMS FILLED WITH TENSION, LAWYERS PITTED AGAINST EACH OTHER, AND FAMILIES CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE. BUT A GROWING MOVEMENT IN THE LEGAL FIELD IS TURNING THIS PARADIGM ON ITS HEAD. COLLABORATIVE LAW, A PROCESS THAT EMPHASISES CO-OPERATION OVER CONFRONTATION, IS CHANGING HOW COUPLES APPROACH SEPARATION WORDS BY EMILY MILLER

It’s a more constructive and humane approach to separation and divorce,” explains James Belderbos, a seasoned advocate of collaborative law and a member of the Collaborative Law Pod in Leicestershire and Rutland. “We’re moving away from the winner-takesall mindset and focusing on solutions that benefit everyone, especially when children are involved.” Unlike traditional court

proceedings, this process involves lawyers, clients, and sometimes additional experts like financial advisors and children specialists, meeting as a team in a more comfortable environment to reach an agreement that works for all parties.

One of the key benefits for clients is the emphasis on maintaining relationships, particularly when children are involved. Divorce is the start of a different co-parenting relationship and ensuring that separation is as harmonious as possible can have long-lasting positive effects on the entire family.

“When children are involved, it’s crucial to create a stable and supportive environment,” says James. “The way parents handle their separation can significantly impact a child’s well-being, and collaborative law helps ensure that we keep the children’s best interests at heart - It puts the children at the centre not in the middle.”

Clients often report feeling more in control of the process compared to traditional court battles.

COLLABORATIVE LAW

Collaborative law gives them a voice in shaping the agreement, rather than leaving the decisions to a judge who does not know the family. It’s an empowering experience that creates communication and mutual respect. Additionally, the process is often less expensive and time-consuming than litigation. Without the need for contentious courtroom battles, families save not only money but also emotional energy.

Interestingly, collaborative law doesn’t just benefit clients. It’s also a game-changer for the lawyers involved. In this process, opposing lawyers work

IT’S A REMINDER THAT WE’RE NOT HERE TO FIGHT BATTLES— WE’RE HERE TO HELP PEOPLE MOVE FORWARD WITH THEIR LIVES

UNDERSTANDING COLLABORATIVE LAW IN ENGLAND AND WALES

Collaborative law is an alternative approach recognised by the Family Court as one of the ways of reaching a settlement outside the traditional court process. Originating in the United States, it is used in England and Wales to resolve family disputes, particularly those relating to divorce, separation child arrangements, and financial settlements. It focuses on cooperation rather than conflict, with the aim of achieving amicable solutions outside the courtroom.

Key Features of Collaborative Law:

■ Voluntary participation: You agree to resolve your issues collaboratively rather than through litigation

■ Specially trained solicitors: You and your former partner are represented by a skilled solicitor trained in collaborative law, who will facilitate open and respectful discussions

■ Focus on mutual benefit: The process seeks to prioritise the best interests of your family, particularly any children involved

Benefits of Collaborative Law:

■ Cost-Effective: You can avoid court proceedings, which typically reduces your costs.

■ Time-Efficient: The process is faster than traditional court proceedings

■ Private and confidential: Unlike court proceedings, discussions between you and your partner remain private

■ Less stressful: The cooperative nature of the process, fewer costs and speedier resolution minimises emotional strain on you and your family, enabling you to co-parent more easily in the future or simply gives you greater peace of mind as you move forward with your life

together instead of against each other, creating a professional dynamic that is both challenging and rewarding.

“Collaborative law allows us, as lawyers, to do meaningful work,” James shares.

“We get to work closely with our clients, but we’re also collaborating with the husband or wife’s solicitor to create solutions that work for the family as a whole.”

For many lawyers, this shift in perspective is refreshing. “Traditional litigation can sometimes feel like a zero-sum game, where one party’s win is the other’s loss. In collaborative law, the focus is on finding a win-win outcome, which can be deeply fulfilling for the professionals involved.”

James tells me about times where this approach has even led to gratitude from unexpected places. “I’ve had the other party and their solicitor thank me for the role I played in creating a more harmonious divorce,” he recalls.

“It’s a reminder that we’re not here to

■ Four-Way meetings: Disputes are addressed through a series of faceto-face meetings between you, your former partner and your solicitors. These meetings may involve extra experts such as pension experts to become five-way meetings

■ Agreeing not to go to court: All participants sign an agreement committing to stay away from court.

If negotiations are unsuccessful, the solicitors will withdraw from the case, encouraging both parties to reach a resolution

fight battles – we’re here to help people move forward with their lives.”

For lawyers, the rewards go beyond professional satisfaction. Collaborative law creates a sense of understanding and cooperation among legal professionals, breaking down barriers that traditionally define the field. This in turn strengthens a profession focused on helping families reorganise rather than simply separating.

In a world often characterised by division, collaborative law reminds us

■ Control over outcomes: You and your partner have greater control over the outcome, rather than relying on the decision of a judge who does not know you

Collaborative law is not suitable for every couple, such as cases involving domestic abuse or extreme power imbalances. A family law specialist will advise what is best in each case. However, for those who can engage in good-faith negotiations, it offers a constructive and dignified alternative to traditional court proceedings.

that even in the midst of separation, there is room for understanding, and a sense of repair for the family and how it will be in the future. And for partners and families navigating the complexities of divorce, especially where there are children, that makes all the difference.

The Leicestershire Collaborative Family Law Group make that difference – find more information about their unique approach at leicscollaborativefamilylaw.co.uk.

I am grateful to my colleagues and clients for their support over many years.”

As he steps into the role of President, Greg plans to focus on promoting wellbeing within the legal profession, challenging the prevailing notion of wearing stress as a badge of honour.

events across Leicestershire and Rutland.

“I look forward to working collaboratively with the society’s members, our Universities and other professionals to enhance the wellbeing of our profession, grow our community links, and to continue to promote Leicestershire and Rutland as a centre of legal excellence,” Greg added.

The 30-year milestone and announcement of his presidency highlight Greg’s dedication to the legal profession and his deeprooted connection to the Leicester community, where he has practised law throughout his career, most recently as the director and owner of Hollingsworths Solicitors.

Greg’s academic journey in law began at the University of Leicester, where he studied for three years before completing his Law Society Finals at De Montfort University (DMU) in its inaugural year offering the programme. His extensive experience has shaped him into a respected figure in the legal community, culminating in his appointment as the President of the Leicestershire Law Society for the year.

THIS POSITION NOT ONLY MARKS A PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT, BUT ALSO PRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK TO A COMMUNITY THAT HAS SUPPORTED ME

He aims to create a supportive environment for legal practitioners and their families, ensuring that mental health remains at the forefront of discussions within the community.

Greg’s vision includes engaging with local charities – with Lamp and YMCA Leicestershire identified as the chosen charities for his presidential term. Greg hopes to promote both charities throughout the year at community

In addition to his professional achievements, Greg is an avid supporter of local sports and cultural events, often seen cheering for the Leicester Tigers and enjoying performances at local theatres such as Curve and De Montfort Hall. His commitment to the community extends beyond his legal practice; he is a keen runner, a trustee of the Sir Thomas White Loan Charity and has raised funds for mental health charity Lamp, for which he is an ambassador. AGREEING ON THE FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT FOLLOWING A DIVORCE WHERE A FAMILY BUSINESS IS INVOLVED CAN RAISE MANY COMPLEX ISSUES INVOLVING INHERITANCE, FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS HAVING A SHARE OR INTEREST IN THE BUSINESS. GAYLE ROWLEY DISCUSSES HOW TO NAVIGATE THE DIVORCE PROCESS WHILST PROTECTING THE FAMILY BUSINESS

HOW CAN NELSONS HELP?

How divorce can affect a family business

Understanding the business structure is the first step in determining how the business will be treated in divorce proceedings. The three most common types of business are:

1. The sole trader is the owner and controller of the business assets and is personally liable for the business and its debts.

2. Partnerships can be formal or informal. There are various types of partnerships and because of this, the business structure can be more complicated. Partnership shares and ownership can vary, as can business liability.

3. A limited company can also be more complicated. This involves the issue of shares and appointment of directors within the company. There can be many owners of the business, with restrictions being placed on the transfer of shares in the business.

Value the family business

Valuing the family business determines what is in the ‘matrimonial pot’ for distribution between the divorcing couple. The valuation will almost always be based on the current

If you have a family business and are getting divorced, working with solicitors and other professionals who have expertise in dealing with family businesses is key. They will be able to deal with the valuation and taxation implications in order to ensure the business is not at risk going forward and at the same time achieve a settlement which is fair and reasonable.

For more information and advice contact Gayle on 0116 214 6692 or gayle.rowley@nelsonslaw.co.uk

market valuation.

Normally the valuation will be carried out by an independent qualified accountant. The accountant will require full financial disclosure, consisting of financial and management accounts. The accountant may also be instructed to deal with other issues such as:

■ The liquidity of the business in order to raise funds and Capital Gains Tax payable on the transfer of shares; or ■ Disposal of the business.

When the family business involves land and buildings, then it will usually be necessary to obtain a valuation of these assets too.

Settlement

The final stage of the process is to decide how to deal with the family business as a settlement. This will normally involve three options:

1. Putting the business up for sale: This option enables a divorcing couple to sell the business and divide the profits. However, selling the business may not always be practical or feasible for various reasons.

2. Buying out the other spouse’s interest: This can involve a cash payment from the business in order to achieve this objective. It can also involve a set-off; for example, one spouse taking ownership of the family business and the other spouse taking ownership of the former home.

3. Co-owning the family business: For divorcing spouses who do not wish to sell the business, then co-ownership of the business is another option if they are able to continue running the business together.

Doing divorce differently in 2025

IN RECENT YEARS, DIVORCING COUPLES IN THE UK HAVE INCREASINGLY TURNED TO OUT-OFCOURT SETTLEMENTS, SEEKING TO REGAIN CONTROL OVER THEIR SEPARATION PROCESS. THERE ARE A VARIETY

OF

OPTIONS

NOW – BUT WHICH WOULD BE THE BEST FOR YOU? WORDS BY EMILY MILLER

Traditionally, divorce often meant heading straight to court, but that adversarial approach is no longer the default. Today, there’s a growing emphasis on exploring alternative methods such as mediation and collaborative law before litigation becomes an option.

Family law solicitor Craig McKnight of HCB Solicitors told me: “Divorcing now allows clients to take a ‘pick n mix’ approach to their divorce, combining elements of different methods to suit their unique circumstances. For instance, a couple might use mediation for financial discussions but opt for collaborative law to resolve parenting plans or issues involving their children.”

So, what are the options?

1. Mediation

Mediation involves a neutral third party, known as a mediator, who helps the couple negotiate the terms of their divorce. This process allows spouses to discuss issues such as asset division, child custody, and support arrangements in a structured setting. Mediation is typically less expensive than litigation and often results in faster resolutions. Importantly, it empowers both parties to shape the outcome rather than leaving decisions to a judge. Once an agreement has been made in mediation, the parties can return to their lawyers to convert this into a binding court order.

2.

Collaborative divorce

In a collaborative divorce, each spouse hires a lawyer trained in collaborative law. The spouses and their lawyers work together in a series of meetings to negotiate the divorce terms. This approach emphasises transparency and cooperation, often involving additional professionals like financial advisors or child specialists. If the process fails and moves to court, the collaborative lawyers must withdraw, encouraging everyone to remain committed to reaching a settlement.

3. Arbitration

Arbitration is a private process where an arbitrator – a neutral legal expert – makes binding decisions on disputed issues. While similar to court, arbitration is typically faster and allows couples to maintain more privacy. It allows the parties to pick their own arbitrator, and their own timetable. This means that they can also control the timetable and pick a hearing date that is convenient for everyone.

“It’s not uncommon for clients to experience long wait times for their court day, only to find that their hearing has been cancelled at the last minute. If this happens, they are still responsible for paying their barrister’s and solicitor’s fees. There may then be a further long wait for the next Court hearing.

“Court proceedings are not only costly, but can also be far more drawn out compared to out-of-court settlements, which allow couples to resolve matters efficiently and avoid these unnecessary and stressful delays. Couples can resolve matters more swiftly, allowing them to move forward with their lives sooner.”

Out-of-court divorce settlements offer a pathway for couples to navigate separation with greater autonomy, efficiency, and sensitivity. By talking with specialists and moving away from the adversarial courtroom setting, individuals can have agreements that reflect their specific needs and circumstances, leading to more satisfactory and enduring resolutions.

Family matters out-of-court solutions

WITH THE EVER-INCREASING BACKLOG OF COURT CASES AND THE EMOTIONAL TOLL ON FAMILIES, IT IS NOW A REQUIREMENT THAT ALTERNATIVES HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTED BEFORE COURT PROCEEDINGS

The pressure on the court system has never been more intense. Courts are now pushing for couples to explore alternative dispute resolutions, like mediation or arbitration, before making any court applications. Johnson Astills’ Family Law team, led by experienced Equity Director Emma Mitchell, is at the forefront of promoting dignified, out-ofcourt solutions for separating couples, ensuring the best interests of children remain central.

Emma explains: “The court system is, frankly, overwhelmed. We see cases delayed or bumped because judges simply aren’t available. This leads to frustration for families, which is why finding ways to settle outside court is so important. Arbitration and collaborative law allow both sides to sit down with their solicitors and work through matters civilly. It’s far less adversarial and often results in better outcomes for families.”

Emma notes that, especially in cases involving children, the courts, nationally and locally, strongly discourage litigation unless it is absolutely essential. They want parents to make decisions that are best for their children and not abdicate responsibility to a judge.

Having recently become an affiliate of The Alternative Divorce Company (ADC), Johnson Astills is expanding its

collaborative approach to family law. Emma shares: “Glynis, who founded ADC, and I have worked together on several cases over the years. She appreciated my straightforward style and approached me about collaborating more formally. The respect between us comes from a shared philosophy of directness and clarity with clients, qualities crucial in family law.”

With 32 years of experience, Emma’s practice focuses on finance in divorce, and her reputation precedes her, with most of her clients coming through personal recommendations from financial advisors, judges, and even former opposing parties. Johnson Astills’ family law team is sizeable for a local firm, consisting of nine members. This allows them to offer a range of styles and expertise, catering to the unique needs of their clients.

“It’s about fit,” Emma says. “Clients need to feel confident and supported, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. It’s crucial to have a solicitor who understands your goals and provides honest, realistic advice.”

While financial matters can complicate divorces, Emma stresses the need for clear advice and early planning. “When clients come to me, many are still in a fog from the breakup, and finances are often the biggest anxiety. Questions like, ‘Will I be able to house my children?’ or ‘What will happen to my pension?’ loom large, especially for women who might not have been the primary earners. My job is to be direct and manage expectations, ensuring they understand what is and isn’t achievable.”

CLIENTS NEED TO FEEL CONFIDENT AND SUPPORTED, AND THERE’S NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL APPROACH

“Choosing a solicitor is deeply personal. You need to feel that gutlevel confidence that your solicitor will support and guide you effectively, perhaps over many months. Meeting them in person and understanding their approach can make all the difference.” Go to johnsonastills.com for more information on the court system.

Family law: children’s welfare

in 2025

AS WE ENTER 2025, NEW TRENDS AND CONSIDERATIONS IN FAMILY LAW ARE SHAPING HOW FAMILIES AND THE COURTS HANDLE THE COMPLEXITIES OF CHILD WELFARE. BHUMIKA PARMAR, OWNER OF BP LEGAL, SHARES HER INSIGHTS

From changes in legislation to growing concerns around children’s mental health, January brings a renewed focus on prioritising the wellbeing of young people involved in legal disputes. Here’s the latest on what’s impacting the children of separating families.

UK law

The UK Labour Government’s Autumn Budget brought new economic pressures that could significantly impact families navigating divorce. Announced in October, the budget includes tax increases and these financial adjustments come with challenges for separated and separating households. Higher income taxes and adjustments to inheritance and capital gains taxes mean that many families will need to reassess their financial plans during divorce proceedings. For parents, especially those already struggling with child support and childcare costs, the increased financial strain could exacerbate disputes over settlements and custody arrangements.

The law also reinforces the importance of alternative dispute resolution, encouraging mediation to reduce the combative nature of family disputes. The goal is to minimise emotional stress and the long-term trauma children may experience when their parents engage in contentious court battles.

Spotlight on mental health

The impact of family breakdowns and legal disputes on children’s

mental health has never been more concerning. National Library of Medicine says research has shown that parental divorce or separation has been associated with an increased risk of adjustment problems like difficulties at school, troublesome behaviours, and depression. As families work through legal processes, early intervention and support services are important.

Local family counselling organisations in Leicestershire are responding by expanding their services. Relate Leicestershire and My Solution Wellbeing have programmes to address trauma, provide peer support groups, and offer one-on-one sessions.

Parental alienation

One controversial issue that remains a focus for legal professionals is parental alienation. Described as a situation where a child becomes estranged from one parent due to psychological manipulation by the other, this can have lasting and damaging effects on a child’s relationship with both parents. Although family courts are increasingly recognising parental alienation as a form of psychological harm, the complexities of proving such behaviour remain a legal challenge.

The role of schools and community support

Schools are often the front line when it comes to observing the impact of family issues on children. In response, some educational institutions are introducing Family Liaison Officers (FLOs) dedicated to working with children experiencing emotional upheaval. These officers aim to provide a safe space, build trust, and offer referrals to additional services if necessary.

Looking ahead

Family law experts, educators, and community leaders continue to work toward solutions that mitigate the negative impact of legal disputes on children. While legislative changes signal progress, ongoing collaboration among all involved parties will be crucial to ensure children remain the central focus in family law matters.

SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST CAN STRIKE WITHOUT WARNING, AND THE MOMENTS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING ARE CRUCIAL

Lifesaving CPR training

to combat sudden cardiac arrest

LEICESTERSHIRE TRAINERS PROFESSOR WILLIAM TOFF AND PROGRAMME COORDINATOR JULIE YOUNG OF HEARTWIZE CAME TO NICHE MAGAZINE’S PARENT COMPANY CROSS PRODUCTIONS’ HQ TO GIVE US THE SKILLS THAT COULD SAVE LIVES WORDS BY EMILY MILLER

Every year in the UK, over 60,000 people experience cardiac arrests outside of a hospital setting. Alarmingly, despite half of these events being witnessed by someone, only 7.8% of victims survive.

Like many of us, I have had a limited amount of first aid training over the years; my last experience of it was pretty much when I was a Girl Guide. If someone was having a cardiac arrest in front of me, I would honestly have looked around for someone else to step in. I wanted to be that person able to step in.

After years of knowing I needed to seriously update my skills, I was thrilled to learn that Heartwize, a charity dedicated to empowering individuals with the skills and confidence needed to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in emergency situations, were coming into the office to deliver training to us!

Heartwize, which has been running for 10 years, addresses the critical gap

in knowledge that often determines life or death in cardiac emergencies. Their mission is clear: to save lives by ensuring more people are equipped to act swiftly and effectively.

“Sudden cardiac arrest can strike without warning, and the moments immediately following are crucial. Administering CPR while waiting for professional medical help can double or even triple the chances of survival,” says Julie Young, Programme Co-ordinator at Heartwize.

“However, despite the lifesaving potential of CPR, many people feel unprepared to perform it. We are working very hard to change that,” adds Professor William Toff, Director of Heartwize. This is where the charity bridges the gap by offering accessible, hands-on training programmes tailored to individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

Through their initiatives, Heartwize teaches practical CPR techniques and emphasises the importance of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). These portable devices, which deliver a controlled electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm, can significantly improve outcomes when used promptly. Heartwize ensures that participants in their training programmes are confident in using AEDs, which are increasingly found in public spaces.

The organisation collaborates with schools, workplaces, and other community venues to make CPR training widely available. By targeting these spaces, they are ensuring that a broad cross-section of society can benefit from their programs. This reflects the charity’s understanding that anyone – regardless of age or occupation – may find themselves in a position to save a life.

Schools are a particular focus for Heartwize. By equipping young people with CPR skills early, the charity aims to develop a generation that’s ready to act in emergencies. Studies show that people trained in CPR are far more likely to step in during a cardiac arrest.

With survival rates plummeting by 10% each minute without intervention, every second truly counts. Heartwize is not just teaching CPR, they are instilling confidence, promoting action, and saving lives. To book a CPR training session through the Heartwize Business Connect programme, go to heartwize.org or email the team at heartwize@heartwize.org.

Changes to capital gains tax (CGT) were on the cards pre-Budget, so those people who managed to sell their business just before October 30, 2024, will be feeling pleased and relieved.

However, certain anti-forestalling rules were implemented which sellers will need to be careful of, especially if they intend to claim Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR). In some cases, elections must be made before the end of this tax year for the lower rates to apply, ie before the tax return can be filed.

Selling your business post-Budget

NICK WRIGHT, DIRECTOR AT JERROMS MILLER SPECIALIST TAX, LOOKS AT INCREASES IN TAX RELIEFS AND WHAT THEY MIGHT MEAN IF YOU’RE SELLING YOUR BUSINESS

CGT rose from 20% to 24% with immediate effect, but although that’s a 4% increase, the new rate is still much lower than the 40% many had predicted.

BADR also increased in the Autumn Budget – something else to consider if you’re planning on selling any time soon – but the change doesn’t take effect until the new tax year.

The million pound lifetime limit has been kept but, on the downside, BADR will rise from 10% to 14% in April and then to 18% in April 2026. It’s a notable change, but means that over two years

BADR will be aligned with the new basic rate CGT.

Formerly called Entrepreneurs’ Relief, BADR hasn’t risen for several years and it’s good to see it retained in the Budget. There’s only a brief window before the BADR rate increases though, so expect to see a flurry of activity in the deals market as business owners look to gain relief worth £140,000, against the £100,000 they would have had previously.

Instead of selling to a third party, or to your management team at the new higher rates, you might want to consider Employee Ownership Trusts. Designed to encourage genuine employee ownership, EOTs are an increasingly popular exit option for employers.

These too are undergoing some changes, but as long as your business meets the sale conditions, you can still sell it to an EOT completely tax free, as long as it represents market value.

Whatever sales route you choose, it’s now even more important that you take proper and effective succession planning advice to make sure you’re achieving your commercial goals as tax efficiently as possible.

If you’re not looking to sell yet but want to grow your business, then there’s good news on the venture capital front.

EIS (Enterprise Investment Scheme) and the SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) for investment support have been left untouched in the Budget. This is a positive move, as businesses require effective investment vehicles if they are to play their part in growing the economy.

While these two schemes are similar, they are not interchangeable, with each bringing their own separate tax advantages

Certain conditions apply, but both offer extremely attractive tax incentives for investors as well as an alternative funding stream for growing owner-managed businesses.

Whether you aim to sell your business soon or want to hold on to it for now and invest in it, you will need professional tax advice. For more information and advice, contact nickwright@jerromsmiller.co.uk or call 0121 693 5000.

A foot in the digital door

Trident wants to see Leicester compete on a global scale

In its fifth year of supporting the Niche Business Awards, creative web agency Trident is stepping up its commitment to Leicester’s business community. As headline sponsor, Trident sees a significant opportunity to highlight how local businesses can use digital transformation tools to become competitive on an international level.

“Think bigger than your backdoor,” says Adam Burrage, Managing Director of Trident. “There’s so much Leicester businesses can do to unlock new revenue streams and boost efficiency. Digital tools can speed up engagement with clients, enhance online presence, and, ultimately, bring more profit into the city. We’re excited to show businesses how they can start making a

bigger impact digitally.”

Trident is calling on Leicester to aim higher. Comparing Leicester with cities like Sheffield and Nottingham, Adam says these cities have made significant strides in digital competitiveness.

“As a city, we’ve missed some investment opportunities and fallen behind regions like Nottingham and Sheffield. There’s no reason Leicester can’t catch up or even lead, but that requires digital transformation. There are many simple actions businesses can start applying today.”

Located strategically, with a diverse and innovative business community, the city is positioned to compete nationally and globally – if it embraces digital transformation.

“The investments are there for the taking, but we need to show we’re ready. If we use digital tools and marketing automation, Leicester can capture new audiences, boost revenue, and gain recognition beyond our local community.”

The Trident team is proud to support the Niche Business Awards and Leicester’s business community, inspiring companies to do more with digital. Adam says: “Leicester has the foundation and the ambition. Now, we need to open our digital doors and step beyond our borders to compete globally.”

Trident shared actionable strategies with us to make immediate business impact. These tips are part of Trident’s broader mission to inspire Leicester’s businesses to enhance their competitive edge.

Tip #1: Customer reviews for quick SEO wins

Many businesses overlook one of the simplest yet most powerful search engine optimisation (SEO) tools: customer reviews. Positive reviews on Google and other platforms help improve reputation and visibility in search results. For businesses aiming to win awards, a strong review profile speaks volumes about your customer service and credibility. Encourage satisfied clients to leave feedback; it’s one of the most effective, low-cost ways to see quick SEO gains.

Tip #2: Speed to lead – chatbots and automation

Customers expect a rapid response. Businesses with a quick “speed to lead” can achieve higher conversion rates and secure more qualified leads. Adam emphasises the benefits of automation and chatbots. Leadmagnet content like downloadable guides or white papers that visitors can access in exchange for their email address will grow your potential customer list. Marketing automation tools to send follow-ups after customers engage with your content will encourage them to book appointments or purchase products they’ve browsed. And with chatbots, businesses can respond to customer inquiries immediately, even outside of office hours. They can handle appointment scheduling, event reminders, and follow-ups, ensuring leads move smoothly down the sales funnel.

Tip #3: Going for an award? Polish your online presence

As a seasoned Niche Business Awards judge and sponsor, Adam says a business’s online presence plays a huge role in winning awards. He suggests companies ensure their website is as polished as possible. Judges and clients alike will often make their first impression based on what they see online.

National Digital Learning Day

To help businesses take these first steps, Trident is hosting a Digital Start Workshop on February 15 as part of National Digital Learning Day. It will cover everything from optimising websites to using digital tools to engage leads and drive conversions. To sign up, visit: wearetrident.co.uk/learning-day.

EAST MIDLANDS REAL ENTREPRENEURS’ AWARDS 2025 IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FROM START UPS FOR ITS INNOVATIVE PITCHING PLATFORM

‘The Pitching Platform’ returns to the East Midlands Real Entrepreneurs’ Awards as part of its ceremony at Leonardo Hotel, Hinckley on Thursday April 10, 2025. Inventors, start ups and entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply for the chance to pitch their business to a live audience on the night.

The platform provides opportunities for new businesses to present their ideas to accomplished entrepreneurs and secure £10k worth of marketing and legal support for 12 months.

Each candidate will deliver their pitch to guests at the awards event in April, followed by a live audience vote to determine the winning concept.

The winner will benefit from £10k worth of marketing and legal support, and a non-executive board for the year consisting of Rik Pancholi; Jenny Cross, CEO of Cross Productions; Paul Bevan, managing director of Breeze Corporate Finance; and Ian Cooper, divisional director at Brewin Dolphin. Rik, Partner at Nelsons Leicester, who sponsors the Pitching Platform, said: “Businesses and entrepreneurs who are at the start of their journey often need guidance and assistance the most but don’t always know where to look, or don’t have the resources to get the right advice. The Pitching Platform allows entrepreneurs to take advantage of a unique opportunity to gain maximum exposure for their business and the winner has phenomenal ongoing support for the coming year.”

Last year’s winner was Katie Michaels, founder of Moti Me, who has designed a physio product for children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy. Since winning The Pitching Platform, Katie has gone on to launch her Biomedical Catalyst Feasibility project, taken on a marketing intern and researchers, formed connections with more healthcare professionals, and is in the late stages of app development.

IT WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BIGGEST DAYS OF RUNNING MOTI ME BECAUSE IT WAS A BIG PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT

Now in its third year, applications are open to anyone with the basis of a business or product, such as students, freelancers, small business proprietors, and full-time employees.

Three submissions will be chosen to advance to the Real Entrepreneurs’ Awards Pitching Platform, backed by Rik Pancholi, Partner at Nelsons, Leicester.

Katie said: “The Pitching Platform was the biggest pitch I’d ever done. To have the majority of people voting for Moti Me was a big surprise and confidence boost for me. If you’d have gone back 10 years and told younger Katie that she was going to pitch in front of more than 200 people, I probably would have run away! Having that many people choosing me as the Pitching Platform winner was really special to me. And I felt proud of that. It was probably one of the biggest days of running Moti Me because it was a big personal achievement.”

To apply for the Pitching Platform, fill in the online form at realentrepreneurs.co.uk/awards. Applications close on January 31, 2025.

In today’s digital age, your online presence is more important than ever. From LinkedIn profiles to social media accounts, your image is often the first impression you make on potential clients, employers, and business partners. A high-quality headshot or business portrait shows professionalism

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL HEADSHOT:

● Invest in a skilled photographer who understands lighting, composition, and expression

● Dress appropriately, choose attire that reflects your industry and personal brand

● Practice your smile, genuine smile can make all the difference

The Leicester Business Festival (LBF) 2024 celebrated its 10th anniversary on Monday, November 4, with a vibrant opening event at the newly unveiled Blackbird Industrial Park.

Encouraging sustainable travel, LBF offered free bus tickets to attendees via the First Bus app and many of the events themselves were free to attend. Want to live healthier for longer?

Euromonitor International’s

Top Global Consumer Trends 2025 shows you’re not alone

WORDS BY KERRY

Data analytics company

Euromonitor International has revealed its Top Global Consumer Trends 2025, with the annual report highlighting the five key trends that explain the evolving behaviour of consumers.

Euromonitor’s Global Consumer Trends 2025 report illustrates how different generations are impacting business dynamics, creating new opportunities and how companies are adapting to shifting customer habits. Stella Vatcheva, senior head of practice innovation at Euromonitor International, said: “Consumers are increasingly conscious when it comes to spending. They seek products and services that are reliable, providing

long-term and targeted solutions.

“Prioritising innovation and loyalty in business strategies will be essential for addressing evolving consumer behaviour and driving growth.”

In a reality shaped by the cost of living, green attributes and wellbeing expectations, these trends are at the core of consumers’ behaviour worldwide.

As Leicestershire adapts to these trends, the county is positioned to have an impact on leading the way in fostering healthier, more sustainable, and innovative lifestyles. Through mindful spending, embracing technology, and prioritising wellbeing, Leicestershire people are making global trends their own.

EUROMONITOR’S TOP GLOBAL CONSUMER TRENDS IN 2025 ARE:

1. Healthspan plans

‘Live healthier for longer’ has become the main goal for consumers who are on their longevity journeys; 52% of consumers believe they will be healthier in the next five years than they are now. Millennials and Gen Z are leading the way in the use of devices or apps to track their fitness and health.

From the scenic walks of Bradgate Park to cycling routes along the Grand Union Canal, we have access to outdoor spaces that encourage physical activity. Local gyms and wellness centres, like Leicester’s own leisure centres, are seeing increased interest in fitness apps and wearable devices. Community initiatives, such as the Leicester 10k and charity fun runs highlight how locals are embracing longevity-focused lifestyles.

2. Wiser wallets

Consumers plan to put more money aside into savings as part of their consumption habits, whilst purchasing decisions are strategic and intentional. Only 18% said they often made impulse purchases in 2024. The report showed that 57% of consumers extensively researched the products and services they purchased in 2024. Meanwhile, 34% of consumers said easy checkout

through digital wallets would improve their online shopping experience. Farmers’ markets and local shops, like those in Market Harborough and Loughborough, are thriving as consumers choose quality over quantity. Savvy shoppers are taking advantage of cashback apps and online savings, reflecting the national trend of intentional spending.

3. Eco logical

Sustainable options not only remain a conscious decision based on personal values, but also on tangible evidence and the benefits these products deliver against customer needs. As of Q2 2024, the number of online SKUs with sustainability claims across 11 FMCG industries and 25 countries was five million. 46% of online beauty and personal care products used a sustainability claim in 2023 – the highest share of the digital shelf among categories.

Initiatives like Leicester’s electric bus fleet and the push for greener housing developments show the community’s commitment to ecofriendly living. Local businesses, including zero-waste shops and ethical fashion brands, align with the report’s finding that consumers seek sustainable options. The growing popularity of recycling schemes and eco-friendly products at Leicester Market is evidence of this shift toward environmentally conscious choices.

4. Filtered focus

Customers feel they are inundated with notifications and surrounded by endless choices; they want to spend less time searching for what they need. 42% of consumers made purchases via livestreaming because product or service features were easier to understand through this channel.

The rise of click-and-collect services from local retailers and the adoption of livestream shopping events by small businesses reflect the trend of simplifying purchase decisions. Town and village community groups on social media offer recommendations for trusted services, helping Leicester people cut through the noise and find what they need efficiently.

5. AI ambivalent

Increased adoption has led to scepticism as consumers and regulators highlighted concerns about defects in the output. However, people aren’t turning their backs on this tech. Instead, they are evaluating the pros and cons; 43% of consumers considered generative AI a trustworthy source of information. What’s more, 46% of professionals expect generative AI to allow their company to create more intelligent shopping suggestions in the next 12 months.

From smart home technology in new developments to AI-driven customer service tools used by Leicestershire businesses, innovation is being cautiously embraced. Local universities, like the University of Leicester, are conducting research into AI’s ethical implications, ensuring that the community understands both its benefits and challenges.

Love

in the fast lane

Dating these days can be challenging at the best of times – but throw in the packed calendar of a busy professional and suddenly it all feels a bit too much WORDS BY EMILY MILLER

Let’s face it: when you’re a business owner or professional constantly juggling deadlines, meetings, and late-night emails, finding time for love often ends up at the bottom of the to-do list.

So why is it so hard? For starters, when your workweek spills into weekends and your ‘free evenings’ are spent networking or catching up on admin, the idea of carving out hours to meet a stranger for dinner feels like a luxury reserved for people with a PA or a time machine.

Then there’s the mental shift. By the time you’ve finished leading a team, pitching to clients, or putting out the metaphorical fires, your brain is, quite frankly, fried. Swiping through profiles or making small talk over cocktails can feel less like romance and more like a chore. And don’t even mention the dreaded ‘what do you do?’ question –do you really want to launch into your professional elevator pitch after a long day of actually living it?

Another hurdle? Expectations. High achievers often hold themselves (and others) to sky-high standards. It’s all too easy to unconsciously approach dating with the same mindset you apply to work. Sure, it’s important to have

standards, but love doesn’t always fit into tidy KPIs or a five-year plan.

But perhaps the trickiest part is vulnerability. As a professional, you’re used to being in control and solving problems. But dating is messy and unpredictable, and that’s kind of the point. Opening yourself up to rejection, awkward moments, or even just bad dates can feel scarier than any boardroom meeting. And yet, it’s exactly those moments that pave the way to connection and joy.

So, what’s a time-strapped professional to do? First, remember that love isn’t another task to optimise.

Schedule time for dating, just like you would a meeting, but don’t treat it like one. Be present, have fun, and embrace the unpredictability. And if a potential partner doesn’t understand your demanding lifestyle? They might not be the one for you. And that’s OK.

Ultimately, dating as a busy professional is hard because it’s supposed to be. Love requires time, effort, and a bit of chaos — three things that don’t always fit neatly into a jampacked schedule.

But when you find someone who’s worth the time and chaos? Suddenly, it’ll all feel just a little easier.

Quick tips for dating as a professional

SCHEDULE YOUR LOVE LIFE

Treat dating like an important business meeting. Set aside time to connect with someone new or deepen an existing relationship.

OUTSOURCE THE SEARCH

Consider hiring a matchmaking service or using specialised dating apps to save time and connect with people who align with your values and goals.

INTEGRATE DATING INTO YOUR ROUTINE

Combine dating with activities you already enjoy, like having coffee or inviting someone to join you at a networking event.

A new glamping spot

Proposed holiday lodges for Leicestershire’s countryside have been given the green light WORDS BY KERRY SMITH

New holiday lodges will be built on Leicestershire farmland after plans were unanimously approved by Blaby District Council, following support by planning experts at Marrons.

Sachin Parmar, planning director at Marrons, who led the proposals, said: “We are thrilled plans have been unanimously approved by planning committee members for the creation of a new holiday and tourist destination in Leicestershire’s countryside.

“The development is an excellent example of a sensible and sustainable approach to diversifying existing landbased rural activity. The ten lodges are designed to offer a glamping style of accommodation, and aim to attract families, couples and small groups of

people who are looking for a rural place to stay in the East Midlands.”

The eight one-bedroom and two two-bedroom timber-covered lodges – based in Oaklands, Hinckley Road, Leicester Forest West – will each have their own recreational area and parking space with an EV charging point. They will be arranged in a semicircle next to an existing pond and surrounded by around one hectare – just under one-and-a-half full-size football pitches – of farmland and open fields.

Sachin added: “The parcel of land chosen is contained into the western corner of the wider site and is bound by dense structural vegetation on all boundaries visible from the public domain.

“The site selection ensures the majority of the land remains in a traditional agricultural land-based use. From public vantage points, it will still be perceived as being used for traditional agricultural activities.”

A driveway will be created off Peckleton Lane to allow access to the lodges and a separate entrance will be constructed for those walking and cycling, which will provide a link to the existing paths and cycle lanes.

The lodges have been designed to blend in with their rural countryside and landscape setting. Timber cladding will be used on the exterior and Grasscrete for all hard surfacing. There will also be enhanced landscaping and planting across the site and along existing field boundaries.

Just got engaged?

Congratulations! You’re likely floating on a cloud of excitement, and rightfully so. But once the celebrations settle, it’s

time to start planning. Weddings are joyous, but they require thoughtful preparation. Here’s what you need to consider to make your big day unforgettable

Budget

Your budget is the foundation of your wedding plans. Sit down with your partner to decide how much you’re willing (and able) to spend. This will influence every other decision, from venue to catering. Don’t forget to set aside some funds for unexpected costs!

Hen/stag party

Your pre-wedding celebrations set the tone! Whether it’s a quiet spa weekend or an adventurous getaway, involve your bridal/groom party in the planning to ensure it’s memorable for everyone.

Guest list

Who will share your special day with you? Start drafting your guest list early – it will help you choose an appropriately sized venue and manage catering costs. Keep in mind that more guests usually mean a larger budget.

Venues

Consider the atmosphere you want, whether it’s a rustic barn, a glamorous ballroom, or a sunny beach. Check if your venue offers packages that include catering or décor.

Invitations

Your invitations are your guests’ first glimpse of your wedding style. Choose a design that reflects your theme and include all the essential details: date, time, location, dress code, and RSVP deadline.

Table Plan

Crafting a seating arrangement takes time. Aim for a balance of comfort and social interaction, pairing guests who will enjoy each other’s company.

Entertainment

Music sets the mood for your wedding. A growing trend is hiring mini orchestras to perform pop songs, offering a unique twist on traditional wedding music. DJs and live bands are also classic options to keep the dance floor buzzing. Book early to ensure your favourite entertainers are free on your big day!

Bridesmaid/Groomsmen Outfits

Coordinate your bridal party’s attire with your colour scheme and style. Keep their preferences in mind; comfortable, flattering outfits will help everyone enjoy the day to the fullest.

Wedding dress/suit

Finding your dream wedding attire is a milestone moment. Start shopping early to allow time for fittings and alterations. Whether you opt for a classic gown, a sleek suit, or something unconventional, make sure it feels authentically you.

Cake

Wedding gift etiquette for couples

Here’s how to ask for wedding gifts tactfully

Asking for gifts isn’t easy for most. It often comes with a touch of embarrassment and a pang of guilt. However, when it comes to weddings, it’s largely assumed by most guests that gifting the happy couple is a given. So, it’s a good idea to guide your guests toward something meaningful for you both. Therefore, no money is wasted, and everyone’s happy.

Start by being clear and polite. A wedding gift registry (like Prezola) or a note on your wedding website is the most common way to let guests know your preferences. Express gratitude for their presence first, emphasising

that their company is the greatest gift of all. Then, casually outline your preferences. For example: ‘Should you wish to give a gift, we’ve created a small registry for items that would help us set up our first home together.’ If you already live together, the gifts might help you ‘achieve your life goals’ or help ‘make your house a home’.

One popular option is asking for contributions toward a honeymoon fund. Platforms like Honeyfund allow guests to contribute towards specific aspects of the trip, like a romantic

dinner or adventurous excursion.

Alternatively, you could request donations to a cause close to your heart such as an animal shelter, a medical charity, or a local project. This allows guests to celebrate your marriage in a way that benefits others.

Still feeling shy? Involve a trusted family member or friend who can communicate your wishes. Whatever you choose, remember that your guests genuinely want to celebrate your day. A heartfelt ‘thank you’ afterward will always be the perfect ending.

From IT consultant to multi-award winning entrepreneur

For seven years, Manisha thrived in the corporate world but found herself yearning for something more fulfilling. It was some powerful words imparted by her Managing Director that became a constant reminder of the challenges she faced in navigating her career WORDS BY EMILY MILLER

At the age of 22, Manisha Champaneri received career crucial advice that would stay with her: “As a young woman in a maledominated industry, and given your skin colour, ensure that when you speak, you command the room’s attention –your words hold power!”

Climbing to the top in IT, Manisha told me about a significant turning point: “I decided that my career choice just wasn’t for me anymore because I had no work-life balance,” she explained. Driven by a passion she’d nurtured since her teenage years, she took a leap of faith and began her transition into becoming a professional hair and makeup artist. “At the time, it was a whirlwind of emotions – exciting to start something new, but absolutely terrifying leaving what I knew behind to start a new journey,” she admitted. Manisha’s journey was far from easy. Starting from scratch in 2007, she lacked clients, formal qualifications, and guidance. Social media wasn’t prevalent then, making self-promotion a significant challenge. “It felt like a significant risk, but I always had my day job to rely on,” she recalled. Determined to succeed, she pursued training, earned a diploma in makeup artistry,

and took on unpaid projects to build her portfolio. “I worked for magazines and anyone who needed a makeup artist for promotional work.”

Her love for makeup stemmed from her teenage years, when it became a source of solace and confidence. Growing up, Manisha endured bullying at an all-white school in London between the ages of 11 and 13. She reflected on those painful years: “Being constantly bullied and picked on by my peers made me feel small and insignificant, but it also forced me to develop a thick skin and learn how to stand up for myself.” This resilience laid the foundation for her later success.

Manisha credits makeup as more than just a skill – it’s empowerment. “Makeup to me holds power,” she shared. It’s a reminder that she is in control of her narrative and capable of shaping her destiny. This philosophy drove her forward until her big break: a call from MAC Cosmetics. Impressed by her work, they invited her to join their team, where she spent a decade as a senior artist and product specialist

while simultaneously building her own hair and makeup business.

By 2021, her academy became the first private institution in Leicestershire to provide VTCT-governed qualifications. “I am committed to empowering women by providing them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the beauty industry,” she explained.

Manisha’s story is a testament to perseverance, self-belief, and the transformative power of passion. Through her journey, she has not only redefined her own path but has also inspired countless others to take control of their destiny. See her work at manishamakeupartist.co.uk.

FROM BOBBY'S TO BUSINESS ABROAD

Leicestershire has long been home to innovators, but one local has taken his entrepreneurial spirit far beyond the county borders. Nathan Mistry, originally from Thurmaston, is now thriving in Dubai’s booming property market, proving that in today’s world, business has no borders WORDS BY

KERRY SMITH

A JOURNEY ACROSS BORDERS

Nathan Mistry’s journey to becoming a successful property entrepreneur began in Leicestershire, where he spent his early years working at the renowned vegetarian restaurant, Bobby’s. “It was my first real job,” he recalls. “I learned a lot about hard work, customer service, and community while working there.”

The restaurant, a staple of Leicester’s Golden Mile, holds special significance for Nathan, not just because of his time behind the counter, but because it’s owned by his best friend’s family.

Even now, based in Dubai, Nathan makes it a point to visit Bobby’s whenever he’s back in Leicester. “It’s like going home,” he says. “The food, the atmosphere, the people, it all takes me back to where it started.”

His story is as inspiring as it is unconventional. Growing up with deaf parents, Nathan developed resilience and determination early on. Despite being offered a place at a top university after attending Loughborough Grammar School through a bursary programme, he chose a different path, diving into sales and real estate. By the age of 20, he had bought his first property in Loughborough. That experience, coupled with a hunger for opportunity, sparked his ambition to relocate to Dubai three years ago.

“Buying my first investment property made me realise how much potential there is in real estate, and I wanted to help others achieve that success too.”

Why Dubai?

Dubai’s property market is a stark contrast to the UK’s, Nathan tells us. In Leicester, purchasing property is typically a straightforward transaction between a buyer and a seller, facilitated by estate agents. In Dubai, the dynamic is vastly different, fuelled by a constantly growing population and a government focused on making the city a global hub for business and lifestyle.

“Dubai attracts people from all over the world with its low taxes and strategic incentives. The government operates like a business, reinvesting revenues from tourism, utilities, and trade to create a safe, thriving environment. It’s a city designed with a long-term vision, which gives investors confidence.”

The lack of income tax is only part of Dubai’s allure. The city’s unique approach to real estate investment, including its off-plan market, offers significant advantages. Developers must adhere to strict regulations, including governmentmonitored escrow accounts, ensuring transparency and investor protection.

Bridging Leicester and Dubai

Despite his move to Dubai, Nathan remains deeply connected to Leicester, a city that shaped much of his professional and personal journey.

“Many of my clients are British Indians, and Leicester has a large British Indian community,” he shares, emphasising the strong cultural and economic ties between the two regions. “There’s a natural affinity with Dubai, whether it’s as a stopover to India or for its familiar yet luxurious lifestyle. That connection made it a logical move for me.”

Buying my first investment property made me realise how much potential there is in real estate, and I wanted to help others achieve that too

Dubai attracts people from all over the world with its low taxes and strategic incentives. The government operates like a business, reinvesting revenues from tourism

Dubai’s cosmopolitan atmosphere, coupled with its appeal as a bridge between East and West, resonates strongly with the community he serves.

Nathan states that geographical distance is no longer a significant barrier in today’s business landscape. “I arrange trips every two months to connect in person,” he says. “Property is a major investment, and sometimes face-to-face discussions are essential.” These regular visits allow him to meet clients and maintain relationships and highlight his commitment to delivering a personalised approach in an increasingly digital world.

Nathan has positioned himself as a key facilitator for Leicester individuals and families in exploring opportunities in Dubai’s booming real estate market. His ability to bridge these two communities reflects his understanding of their shared aspirations and the importance of trust in guiding significant investments.

Lessons from Dubai

Nathan’s insights into Dubai’s market underscore the city’s extraordinary growth potential and unique lifestyle

advantages. “Dubai is like investing in London 30 years ago. The population is expected to more than double by 2040, creating immense demand for housing. If you invest now, the long-term gains could be phenomenal,” he explains. This rapid growth is driven by the city’s strategic positioning as a global hub for trade, tourism, and finance, making it a magnet for expatriates, businesses, and high-net-worth individuals alike.

In addition to the investment opportunities, Nathan emphasises Dubai’s family-friendly appeal. “It’s a 30-minute city; you can get anywhere you need to within 30 minutes,” he says, pointing to the city’s efficient infrastructure and ease of navigation. From its world-class private schools and healthcare facilities to its wealth of leisure options, Dubai offers a lifestyle that attracts families from around the globe. “It’s incredibly safe –you can leave your wallet on a table and walk away without worry. That level of respect is invaluable.”

The combination of cultural diversity, cutting-edge innovation, and unwavering commitment to

safety and quality of life makes Dubai a compelling choice for investors and families alike.

A global mindset

From a grammar school in Leicestershire to the bustling streets of Dubai’s Creek Harbour, he has shown that success comes from a mix of grit, vision, and adaptability.

For Nathan, the borders of Leicestershire don’t limit his ambitions, they expand his reach. His story is a testament to the fact that, in today’s connected world, opportunities can take you anywhere. As he puts it: “Whether you’re in Leicester or Dubai, what matters is how you seize the moment and create value for others.”

For Leicestershire locals dreaming big, Nathan Mistry’s journey proves that home is where your roots are, but the world is where your future lies.

Whether enjoying a meal at his best friend’s family restaurant Bobby’s, or facilitating investments in Dubai’s dynamic real estate scene, Nathan bridges the warmth of Leicester with the opportunity of Dubai.

What property investors need to know after the Autumn Budget

Niche spoke to Harry Singh, owner of Fine & Country, an estate agent in the luxury property market, about the Autumn Budget’s impact on first-time buyers, home movers and investors

The property market in Leicestershire is bracing for significant tax reforms set to impact first-time buyers, home movers, and investors. Following recent Budget announcements, investors are expressing growing concerns over the increased Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) on additional properties. However, market expert Harry Singh, owner of Fine & Country, believes it may be too early to fully predict the long-term effects. Here’s a breakdown of the major changes.

STAMP DUTY LAND TAX (SDLT) CHANGES

1. Impact on second-home buyers and investors

Effective from October 31, 2024, the SDLT surcharge for additional property purchases has increased from 3% to 5%. This rise aims to deter speculative investments and make more properties available to first-time buyers.

2. Lowering of Stamp Duty thresholds for homeowners and movers

The general SDLT nil-rate band is set to decrease from £250,000 to £125,000 in April 2025. This change means that individuals buying properties above £125,000 will incur higher SDLT liabilities, affecting overall affordability. Higher SDLT surcharges and increased CGT rates may affect the profitability of property investments, leading investors to reassess their portfolios.

3. First-time buyers to lose some benefits

First-time buyers are currently exempt from SDLT on properties up to £425,000, but this exemption threshold

will revert to £300,000 in April 2025. This means that those purchasing homes between £300,000 and £425,000 will need to budget for additional SDLT charges. While this shift doesn’t take effect until 2025, it could influence firsttime buyer behaviour as the deadline approaches, potentially increasing demand in the short term and putting further pressure on house prices.

4. Homeowners

The reduction in SDLT thresholds may increase transaction costs for those looking to move, potentially influencing decisions to buy or sell property.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX (CGT) ADJUSTMENTS

The CGT rates are also going up – from 10% to 18% for the lower rate and from 20% to 24% for the higher rate. This change will directly impact investors when they sell assets, including property. If you’re thinking about selling an investment property, it’s essential to factor in these increased costs to ensure your investment remains profitable.

INHERITANCE TAX (IHT) REFORMS AFFECT FAMILY PROPERTY ASSETS

A notable reform in the property investment world is the new 20% inheritance tax that will apply to family businesses transferring assets worth over £1m, effective from August 2026. For Leicestershire families planning to pass on rental properties or investment assets as part of a business, this could mean significant financial implications.

THE MARKET OUTLOOK

While the increase in SDLT surcharges and the impending decrease in taxfree thresholds are causing unease among investors, the overall market remains resilient for now. With no immediate increase in capital gains until the new rates take effect, property stakeholders still have time to plan accordingly. Investors and homeowners should stay informed, consult with financial advisers, and monitor the evolving market.

A

Your home’s flow and harmony

Thoughtful choices in flooring, kitchens, and furnishings, can transform a house into a sanctuary WORDS BY EMILY MILLER

esigning a home that flows seamlessly from one space to another requires a unified vision that ties every element together. Achieving this harmonious balance can be inspiring and challenging, but with guidance like that found at Oadby House, it’s possible to create a space that reflects your personality while maintaining coherence throughout. We looked into the top three elements of a home that create flow and harmony.

A critical starting point in achieving this harmony is selecting the foundation of your interiors: the flooring. Flooring serves as the canvas for your design, setting the tone for the rest of the space. Mark Lucas of Michael John Flooring at Oadby House highlights: “Flooring is more than just a practical element; it’s the foundation of personal expression in a home.” From soft, luxurious carpets to the timeless appeal

of hardwood or the versatility of vinyl, the key is to choose materials that align with the look and feel you want to achieve.

Kitchens

Equally essential to cohesive interiors is the design of your kitchen, which often acts as the hub of the home. Kitchens should be functional and act as a reflection of the style of the surrounding spaces. Daniella Smith of Sherwin Hall at Oadby House explains: “A kitchen is more than a standalone room; it’s an integral part of a home’s personality. We encourage clients to think of their kitchens as extensions of their broader design vision, combining functionality with aesthetics.”

Furnishings

Your home should reflect your style and provide a comforting retreat. With fitted furnishings, the goals are to maximise space and showcase individuality. Custom-made wardrobes, media units, and home offices elevate your interiors while ensuring efficient use of every inch: Mollie McGahan of Albert Henry Interiors at Oadby House highlights the significance of thoughtful design, stating, “Our bespoke furniture range is meticulously crafted to accommodate a variety of individual home styles, whether you lean towards the sleekness of contemporary design or the charm of traditional aesthetics. Incorporating a fitted furniture piece can truly transform a room, creating an environment that resonates deeply with your personal tastes and preferences.”

The environment you create

A successful interior design journey –whether for a homeowner or property developer – benefits from the type of collaboration that can be found at Oadby House. Working with experts across flooring, kitchens, and furnishings can provide invaluable insights and inspiration. “By viewing these elements as interconnected rather than isolated, you can create spaces that feel cohesive and thoughtfully designed,” Mollie says.

For property developers, offering tailored interior options can also enhance the overall appeal of a home, providing buyers with a canvas that blends style and practicality. Mark tells us: “Giving clients the ability to personalise their space while maintaining a consistent design means developers can add value and individuality to their properties, which is hugely attractive to new home buyers.”

Creating a home with a sense of flow involves weaving together diverse elements into a harmonious whole.

Leicester Comedy Festival returns to fill the city with laughter, creativity, and the unmistakable buzz of live comedy from February 5-23 Words by Kerry Smith

This year’s Leicester Comedy Festival (LCF) and UK Kids’ Comedy Festival – organised by charity Big Difference Company – promise an unforgettable experience, bringing together top-tier acts and rising stars across a diverse lineup.

Charlotte Laidet, festivals and programme director at Big Difference, said: “Leicester Comedy Festival and the UK Kids’ Comedy Festival have a crucial economic and social impact on the city and county.

“In a cultural sector still suffering from the pandemic, and other external factors, as an audience member, you can help save the industry simply by going to events. Go and see your favourite TV personality, but also take a risk on someone you don’t know who might be the future star of comedy. Together, we create a vibrant festival community where everyone feels welcome.”

Leicester Comedy Festival is the largest and longestrunning comedy festival in Europe – and 2025 is set to be the biggest year ever, with 720 shows taking place at 72 venues in the city and beyond.

From gut-busting stand-up and inventive sketches to musical comedy, improv, thought-provoking exhibitions, and insightful workshops, there’s comedy for all tastes.

Here are some of the main themes and updates about this year’s Leicester Comedy Festival and UK Kids’ Comedy Festival.

THE BIG LAUGH LINEUP: LEGENDS AND SECRET SURPRISES

One of the festival highlights is exclusive on-stage interviews with comedy giants: LCF’s very own festival patron Eshaan Akbar and the iconic Jenny Eclair! And if picking just one show feels impossible, Secret Tours are back to lead you through a night of unexpected hilarity.

COMEDY IN EVERY CORNER: NEW VENUES, NEW VIBES

Bringing comedy closer this year, LCF has a dozen new venues added to its festival map, including Leicester Cathedral, The International, De Montfort Student Union, and Soundhouse. Plus, they’re taking the festival beyond the city centre, reaching into the county to spots like The Old Plough, Barkby Cricket Club, Sunny Skies Café, and more.

SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON NEW TALENT

This year, there’ll be laughs from Circuit Breakers and Leicester Comedian of the Year contenders. And thanks to Big Difference Company’s new Bridging the Gap initiative, supported by Big Give Arts for Impact, they’re supporting underrepresented comedians in covering costs and gaining the spotlight they deserve. Look out for the pilot show at The Guildhall featuring six incredible acts who will also host solo shows around the festival.

FUNNY WOMEN LEAD THE WAY

In partnership with Funny Women, LCF is celebrating female and non-binary comedians with workshops, networking events, and performances. As they continue to champion inclusivity, they’re proud to stand by organisations working tirelessly to create a comedy industry that truly reflects all voices.

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF COMICS

From workshops for budding comics to school partnerships, LCF is sparking a love of comedy in young people across Leicester with UK Kids’ Comedy Festival. Its Laugh Academy is back at Attenborough Arts Centre for half-term, Joke Spot will visit six local libraries, and up to eight primary schools will compete in Loving Laughing to claim the comedy crown from reigning champion Foxton Primary School. And for something completely different, check out the latest twist on The Completely Made-Up History of Coalville – boots recommended for this one!

COMEDY WITH A CAUSE: BEYOND A JOKE SERIES

As the comedy industry continues to feel the effects of the pandemic and shifting economic tides, LCF is tackling big issues. The Beyond a Joke series will host an annual general meeting with the Live Comedy Association and explore topics like funding in comedy, shining a light on the critical role comedy plays in culture. They’re working to amplify local voices on a national stage, advocating for comedy to be recognised as an art form deserving of funding and support.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: SUPPORT LOCAL, LAUGH OFTEN

Ready to make a difference? By attending shows, you’re doing just that. Support your local venues, whether it’s a pub, theatre, or village hall. Buy your tickets well in advance and take a chance on new talent. After all, you could be seeing the next big name in comedy.

REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CITY’S CREATIVE COMMUNITIES LAUNCH ‘LEICESTER LEADING: 2025-2030’ AT THE LEICESTER BUSINESS FESTIVAL

NEW FIVE-YEAR LEICESTER CREATIVE ECONOMY PLAN

‘Leicester Leading 2025-2030’, the new cultural and creative industries’ strategy, has been devised to build a stronger, more inclusive cultural and creative economy. Sarah Harrison, City Centre Director, explains the importance of this sector

Anew five-year strategy that aims to create thousands of new jobs in Leicester’s creative economy and engage hundreds more adults in the city’s arts and cultural offer was launched late last year at Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre in the Cultural Quarter, as part of the Leicester Business Festival.

‘Leicester Leading 2025-2030’ aims to build on the city’s status as one of the most creative cities in the UK and reflects Leicester’s ambitions to be more vocal about its success in the sector.

The strategy was developed and funded by the city council in partnership with Arts Council England, De Montfort University and the University of Leicester.

Peter Knott, Midlands area director at Arts Council England said: “Leicester is a diverse and international city, with its artists, cultural organisations and creative industries making it a great place to live, grow up, study, work and visit.

“This strategy provides an ambitious pathway so that, by 2023, people at all stages of their lives, and from all parts of the city, can actively participate in, and benefit from, high quality cultural and creative activity.”

Work carried out for Leicester Leading 2025-30 revealed that Leicester had nearly three times as many jobs in the creative economy as official figures from Business Register & Employment Survey 2022 suggested – 15,600 in 2022 compared to 5,310 in 2015 – with people working in the arts, computer consultancies, music, photography, publishing, film and television, design and designer fashion, advertising and marketing, and software and gaming.

But over the next five years, the ambition is to see the number of jobs in this fast-growing sector rise to 20,000, an increase of 28%.

A further ambition is to boost the number of adults in the city who actively participate in cultural and creative activity, aiming to increase the engagement rate from 80% to the national average of 90%.

Over the last decade or so, the city council and its partners have supported Leicester’s creative economy with around £75m, investing in major projects – including the expansion of Phoenix Arts Centre and the Leicester Museum and Art Gallery – that has helped to create a strong and diverse creative sector.

Consultants Fifth Sector carried out the initial engagement for the strategy, involving hundreds of key stakeholders in round table discussion, one to one meetings and online questionnaires. Extensive research and consultation helped shape the strategy and identify its eight key themes: Leicester Leading; Empowering Talent; Sharing and Shouting; a Signature Festival; Inclusive Heritage; Inspirational Spaces; Creative Circuits; and Vision for Growth.

Central to the development of each theme is a commitment to promoting equality and inclusion, challenging entrenched inequalities, celebrating diversity, and providing access to opportunity for all in Leicester.
