s we progress in our love and exploration of wine, we start to taste better and better wines. Reaching high to the ‘Blue Chip’ wines from each region, sometimes we get an opportunity to taste a ‘Top Icon’. When I get this opportunity, I get quite excited. Usually it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to taste a wine so highly coveted but, more importantly, one that can take your breath away. A wine you can still taste every time you close your eyes. Iconic wines range greatly in price, but are typically upwards of $300 per bottle. For all wine lovers, there is a time when we get to taste a wine, which may be an iconic wine, and this wine is better than any other we have ever tasted; the one that makes us realize that this great wine is more than just fermented grape juice. The wine has developed into something more than the sum of its parts. We call this our epiphany wine. Our eyes and palates are opened with full revelation and our desire grows to prospect for even more. Sometimes the experience is more exciting than the wine itself. The hype outlasts the flavour and balance of the icon; it doesn’t matter to me. To taste an icon is a great experience that I never forget. Sometimes the icon lives up to all of the hype. It brings me to a time and place I have never experienced previously. Heights never reached before. Long live this moment...
Stuart Brown is a sought after certified Sommelier who also serves as Vice Council Gastronomique for the Victoria Bailliage of La Chaine de Rotisseurs. Most fine wine regions of the world have top wines that reach iconic status. They become legendary brands sought out around the world. Some of the original examples were from the British Empire and their love for the wines of top Chateaux in Bordeaux. Later, we saw examples of the U.S.A. market and the love for top French, Italian, Australian and American wines. In the modern era, we see China as a great consumer of the icon wines. Prices for top Bordeaux have been climbing due to the increase purchase in the Chinese market. This trend is spreading to other icon wines as well, and we can foresee the prices of all icon wines increasing as the exploration, love, awareness and consumption of wine increases on a global scale.

adore Christmas! When our children were young, Steve and I would go overboard on the holidays every year — mountains of gifts, hundreds of twinkling lights, and pounds of shortbread cookies. With four children and our busy lives, it seemed like it was the one time of the year that was, in our house at least, immune from hurry or procrastination. We find time around the holidays to visit family or friends we haven’t seen in a while and we are more giving of our time and money.

Now that our children are grown and having babies of their own, we find our home more quiet around the holidays. Happily, we have filled some of that time with community work, making a grateful effort to pay our many blessings forward. Our favourite is Festival of Trees, for which I sit on the planning committee and NICHE magazine is a gold tree sponsor. The trees are so enchanting and radiate community spirit!

ocated in the German-speaking area of Valais, in southern Switzerland, Zermatt is a quick 10 kilometres from the Italian border. Zermatt is the pristine location to bask in the beauty of Switzerland’s most famed landmark, the Matterhorn, whose moody angles tower over the traditional town. While the Matterhorn is undeniably remarkable, Zermatt is encircled by 29 different peaks of the Pennine Alps that reach over 13,000 feet, making them the highest mountain range in Europe. The tallest peak is the Monte Rosa, which Leonardo Da Vinci described as “…lifting itself above almost all the clouds.”

HOLIDAY 2014
The natural splendour of the area and the towns whimsical, Shangri-La allure, draw return visitors from around the globe every year. Zermatt has a local population of just over 5,500, but in the peak tourist season this number climbs to a staggering 20,000 inhabitants. The town boasts traditional architecture and sights, with modern luxuries and comforts — with the exception of vehicles. There are no cars allowed in Zermatt, but taking a horse drawn sleigh or walking the snowy cobblestone streets only adds to the feeling of complete tranquility and escape.
W H AT T O D O Zermatt has been informally titled the world’s finest ski town. To reach the longest run, the Klein Matterhorn, you have to take the highest cable car in existence to an astounding 12,500 feet, before riding the slopes all the way down into town. If snowboarding is more your interest, there are a number of glacier snowboard parks to spend the day at. When you need a break from the slopes explore the endless waking and mountain climbing routes, ice skate on one of two outdoor rinks, paraglide through the clear air, brush up on your history at the Matterhorn Museum, or take in the spectacular views from a helicopter. There is an interesting 30 minute walk to tour the Ricola Herb Garden, which cultivates the herbs used in Ricola’s drops and teas.

For those looking for a luxurious outlet take a wander through the many shops; you can buy top designer pieces in one store and an ice pick at the next. The spa at Mont Cervin Palace simply cannot be missed. It covers over 1,700 square meters and is a state of the art, ultra-lavish affair. A Swiss Chocolate Body Peel is strongly recommended. However you choose to spend your day, remember to keep your eye on the time the “Après-ski” hour is not to be missed — a time to enjoy a warm pot of fondue and some drinks at a local eatery before delving into the spectacular night life in Zermatt.

W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E ? Before modern-day development, the region of Zermatt, Switzerland had ample meadow space that could be seen from the peaks of the surrounding ring of mountains. The word “Zermatt” has a direct translation of: “to the meadow”. The term is a contraction of the local words “zer”, meaning “to”, and “matta”, meaning “meadow”.

celand is a visually spectacular country of natural raw beauty. I was constantly in awe of the ever changing dramatic diverse landscapes, from its barren treeless lands to the continental divide where it looks like a giant axe split the mountain in two. I set out on a photographic adventure to a country not on the travel bucket list of most, especially in winter. Along this week long journey, we fit in as many amazing locations possible. During a blizzard, we explored a hidden cave. We stopped at a lava field from the 1700’s that was covered a food deep in moss. This is a land filled with waterfalls that when you think you have seen the most incredible one, you come across another one more awe-inspiring and magnificent. There were surreal steam covered landscapes created from geothermal activity that constantly shifted in the ever present wind. There are active geysers that blow up regularly and it was fascinating to watch the water level in the hole boil, then form a massive bubble before it exploded water 100 feet into the air.

HOLIDAY 2014
We drove in monster trucks across incredible black pebble sand beaches to reach sea caves that are only accessible a few hours each day. With the pounding surf at our backs we would grab our gear and run when a rogue wave would fly up the beach. The models balanced on a mountain of interlocking basalt columns that looked like a staircase for a giant. On the day we shot at the icebergs, we were blessed when the clouds broke, giving us bright blue skies and sun rays that sparkled against the sea of ice. It was an unforgettable photographic journey.

TRAVEL BITES by Stuart Brown | wine columnist
STUART BROWN is a sought after certified Sommelier who also serves as Vice Council Gastronomique for the Victoria Bailliage of La Chaine de Rotisseurs. Formerly the Sommelier at Bear Mountain Resort, Stuart now represents the wines of People, Place & Time with The Trialto Wine Group, and is an instructor for the International Sommelier Guild on Vancouver Island.
Drink fashionably, my friends...
The holiday season is the perfect time to get excited about fashion and drinks, so why wouldn’t we be thinking about fashionable drinks. The two are so complimentary that we see them at every glamorous event we attend. Let’s not be ashamed of our desire to quaff wonderfully looking and tasting liquids, whilst we look so darn good at those holiday parties. I suggest that we embrace the alluring appeal of these fantastic drinks and do it right, with style.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR DRINKING IN STYLE: • Drinks should be inspired by the decor and feel of the event. Matching colours and seasonal flavours all served in refined glassware, decanters and punchbowls. • Use quality ingredients. Whether alcoholic or not, all spirits, wines, juices, fruits, and other drink ingredients should always be from the best quality producers. The best makes the best! • Start small and make it bigger. Always start with small amounts of stronger flavours, and then increase minimally. Elegance in your drinks pairs well with elegance in your lifestyle. Always try out what you will create days before your event, if possible. • Keep it safe. While most of us love alcohol-induced libation, it is important to do this with safe-style (ok, I just made that up). Always have plenty of non-alcoholic choices, too. You can be just as creative in this area. Interesting sparkling waters are an easy starter. And always make taxis and a safe ride home available. That is always fashionable!

HOLIDAY 2014
Now that you think you are all set up, it’s time to REALLY get it all set up. Make sure your ideas are not extremely difficult to execute at the time of the event. You want to look and feel relaxed while the room is flowing. Having your cocktails as prepared as possible (punchbowls work well here), your garnishes prepared, your liquids chilled as necessary, plenty of ice at the ready, hot drinks heated (mulled wine and tea infused hot cocktails are easy to prepare ahead of time), and the right serving equipment, can help guests help themselves to drinks as they want them. Plenty of variety ensures all of your guests have something to enjoy. For example, when serving wine to a large group, I like to serve a soft, fruit sparkling and a dry, crisp sparkling in addition to a rosé because they can be so lovely and elegant. I like to serve lighter, crisp, and non-oaked whites like Pinot Gris, Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc and contrast with a richer, fuller, oakier wine like a Chardonnay/White Burgundy, coupled with lighter, crisp reds like Barbera, Pinot Noir or Gamay Noir and contrast with richer, fuller reds like Merlot, Cabernets, and Syrah. Then all your guests’ tastes and styles are covered. Now… it’s time to drink fashionably, my friends.

it maker, singer, producer, writer, art curator, fashion designer, husband, father and contagiously happy, Pharrell Williams is confident and comfortable in his own skin — extremely well-aged skin I might add. Born in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1973, the multi-talented Williams was highly influenced by music at a young age. Singlehandedly responsible for shaping the careers of some of the most influential and successful artists of the millennium, Williams began this journey with a producing partnership with Chad Hugo. The pair met at summer band camp in grade 7 and later joined the school marching band at Princess Ann High School. Joining with two other friends, the four performed as a band at the high school talent show where they were scouted by Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter, Teddy Riley. After high school, Riley signed Williams and Hugo and their production label, The Neptunes, which went on to shape the sound of R&B throughout the millennial decade. Known for producing dozens of #1 Billboard hits including Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl”, Nelly’s “Hot in Herre”, Snoop’s “Drop it Like it’s Hot”, Britney Spears’ “Slave 4 U” and Kelis’s “Milkshake”, the early 2000’s were clearly the time of The Neptunes as they produced 43% of all music played on the radio in the United States at that time. In 2002, The Neptunes were named “Producer of the Year” award at the Billboard Music Awards and The Source Awards. Williams went on to form his own band, N.E.R.D with Hugo and Haley, and released two albums – In Search Of (2001) and Fly or Die (2004).

Pharrell’s METHOD TREATING EACH MUSICIAN AS A MONA LISA, PHARRELL WILLIAMS BREAKS DOWN HIS WRITING PROCESS INTO THREE STEPS TO FIND A JUXTAPOSITION AND TEXTURE BETWEEN LYRICS AND THE MUSICIAN’S STORY BEHIND THEIR VOICE.
In 2005, Williams released his first solo album, In My Mind. His dynamic presence and talent was evident industry-wide, and people took notice. In 2007, Williams took part in the Concert for Diana and went on to produce music for the 84th Academy Awards, in collaboration with the legendary Hans Zimmer. Releasing the first 24-hour music video for Despicable Me 2 soundtrack hit “Happy”, resulted in a #1 spot on Billboard charts for several months, which created the perfect build-up to the Pharrell storm before releasing his first solo album in 8 years, G I R L. It was no surprise that Williams brought on numerous artists to be featured on his album Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk and Hans Zimmer. All of the album tracks seem to channel his main music inspirations: Michael Jackson, Q-tip, Rakim, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hatheway. During an interview with Oprah, the topic of the success and influence of the song, “Happy” came up, with Oprah commenting on how it touches hearts all over the world. In true Pharrell style, he remained ever humble. “It’s overwhelming because I love what I do and I appreciate the fact that people have believed in me for so long that I can make it to that point to feel that.” 34

Williams married his best friend, Helen Lasichanh in 2013, and his first son, Rocket was born. Through it all, Williams doesn’t seem to show any signs of slowing down. At age 41, Pharrell continues to work harder than ever. Milestones in the past year include producing “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke which reached #1 on Billboard Top 100. Recently, Williams produced new albums for Gwen Stefani, Cara Delevingne, created music videos for his album G I R L, toured Europe, and still managed to find time to be an authentic and effective judge on NBC’s The Voice. 36

Paris, London, New York and Milan are the major fashion capitals of the world, or so the two fashion weeks that happen every year tells us. Whatever style inspires you, the fashion capital that has it all is Milan, Italy. Undoubtedly, it is due in large to the Italian way of dressing; the beauty in the way an Italian woman gets ready in the morning or the way an Italian man always pulls together the perfect look. Italians definitely do it better.

Scan the streets of Italy and the glamour of Italians becomes immediately evident. From the north of Italy, with their art for layering, to the south of Italy and its sunshine, Italians (men and women) believe fashion is one of the most important factors to their culture. Street style is documented more and more now, as it not only inspires the rest of the world but fashion designers too. With this comes the popularity of fashion blogs. Whether they document their own fashion as street style, or capture other bloggers and fashionistas alike, blogs go hand in hand with street style. As fashion is so important to the Italian way of life, their blog scene has continued to grow. From documenting their own fashion sense and tastes to photographing fashion weeks, street style and events, their voices can be heard not only across Italy but the fashion world as a whole.

SHE’S A LIVING LEGEND:
D
ame Vivienne Westwood was born Vivienne Isabel Swire in Glossop, Derbyshire on April 8, 1941. Fabulous at age 73, this British fashion designer is responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave sensibilities and style into mainstream popular culture. Westwood grew up surrounded by craftsmen; her father was as a cobbler and mother worked at a cotton mill to make ends meet. At age 17, Westwood made the move to London with her family and studied at Harrow School of Art. Westwood expressed an early interest in all forms of creative arts, including silversmith crafting. Transferring into teacher training, Westwood kept her adornment for art flowing with jewellery making on the side; coveted pieces that she would sell at a small stall on Portobello Road. Leaning towards expected normalcy, Vivienne married Derek Westwood and had one son, Benjamin. Westwood found a new love interest in Malcom McLaren, Sex Pistols manager, and left her husband for a life of artistic freedom with McLaren; dressing the Sex Pistols and running down a creative path, drawing inspiration not from status-quo but from bikers, fetishes, human rights, beliefs and punk movement — all of which are still clearly evident in each of Westwood’s collections.

In 1981, Westwood showed her very first collection in London, entitled Pirate which showcased how outspoken and influential she would become for the punk rock movement and drove the New Romantic movement of the Nineties. This very collection was also noted for Naomi Campbell’s infamous tumble on the catwalk, wearing Westwood’s legendary platforms.
Lively • Fresh • Local
Westwood found utmost happiness in her third husband, Andreas Kronthaler, whom she met while teaching fashion in Vienna. They lived the first four years of their marriage in secrecy, for fear of media backlash because of Kronthaler’s age (he was 25 and she was 50). In 1990, Westwood launched a menswear line, which garnered her an award for British Designer of the Year in 1991. Westwood’s second son, Joseph (with McLaren) went on to become the brilliant co-creator of Agent Provacateur in 1994, which carried many of Westwood’s creations. Westwood is infamous for sending controversial or fiction inspired designs down the catwalk, In 2003, Westwood sent men down the catwalk wearing fake breasts, stating it was inspired by fifties sweater boys. In 2008, Westwood cast Roma gypsies as models with gold teeth and enormous medallions. For Westwood’s Spring 2014 collection, Vivienne opened the show with Lily Cole performing a modern dance about climate refugees. No surprise to her fans and industry insiders, Vivienne Westwood uses almost every platform of creativity to share her social, eco and political messages. Never afraid of controversy, political activist Westwood brings in the biggest celebrity and fan attendance to her runway shows, because of the outrageous antics. Positive or negative buzz, Westwood honours human rights and world events. In 2011, Westwood went on a work trip to Africa for her Ethical Fashion Africa collection, which encompassed a program where local women could use their skills to produce bags for Westwood and earn fair wages.

Over the years, numerous collections resulted in a strong celebrity and British Royalty following. Notably, Westwood created the fantastical wedding gown that Carrie Bradshaw wore in Sex and the City. A true punk rock queen, Westwood continues her affair with couture that is continually and masterfully manipulated with tweeds, British wools and tartans. Passionate, engaged and invested in changing the environment through fashion, Westwood spoke at Friends of the Earth annual conference in London about her manifesto on helping to stop climate change by the Rio Olympics in 2016.

he holiday season means something different for each of us. For me, it is a season of ‘one event to the next’. Whether that is family, fashion or just getting festive, this IS the time of year when your Little Black Dress (better known as the LBD) plays a major role in your wardrobe.
1. Conservative: Keep the jewelry feminine and dainty, such as pearls, stud earrings or thin chain necklaces. This can be worn with a thin knit front button cardigan that sits at the waistline or a blazer. Black or skin tone nylons are a great addition, not just for warmth but for coverage as well. Trust me — you’ll be proud to rock out with Jackie O inspo.
Having at least one LBD living in your closet can be a lifesaver; getting you through this season’s many occasions. The little black dress serves well as a flattering blank canvas, acting as a fashion chameleon, that can be changed up at a moment’s notice — from chic and elegant to fun and playful — depending on the mood of the event.
2. Casual: Throw on some ankle boots, a thick knit sweater and perfectly pin up the tousled mane into a messy topknot. Take off to the movies for date night — he won’t even notice the dress was from the night before.

Ask yourself...
?
Emulate Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Envision a woman of elegance, poise and posture. Accessorize with a little more of a confident statement, while keeping the hair perfectly quaffed.
Who would I like to portray tonight and what kind of event am I attending?
To make things simple, I have put holiday occasions into five categories: conservative, casual, classy, sassy, and vamp. Each category will help guide you as to what the perfect accessory or styling might be appropriate. The LBD is meant to be of a clean design but can range in length depending upon your personal preference, style and age. What’s a ‘must right now’ and ideally works for ALL women, is a form fitting garment with a hemline just at, or slightly below the knee. This keeps you versatile and prepared for all occasions. 54
3. Classy:
HOLIDAY 2014
5. Vamp: Put it all on the line. Big hair — don’t care; full red lips to work with your hips; leather and your highest pumps. Marilyn began the path, so just keep strutting down it, with her in mind.
4. Sassy: Leave the layers at home and dare to bare just a little more skin. Add a bold pop of colour to the lip; it’s the perfect way to show your inner (restrained) vixen.
Remember that when you’re out shopping for that little black dress – look for sleek, simple, and classic. From there, build on the basic foundation by adding your own flair of fashion to the energy of the evening. From confidently classic to sexy siren, enjoy every luxurious minute of this LBD season.

Oia is a dreamy little Grecian town on Santorini, located amongst the Cyclades of Greece.
T
he town is reminiscent of a rich oil painting, with the island’s striking natural colours juxtaposed by the vivid white Cycladic Architecture that spills down the hillside to the Aegean Sea below. Perched on the Caldera cliffs, 300 feet above the Aegean Sea, is one of Greece’s most prestigious hotels, Katikies The Hotel in Oia Santorini. Katikies offers guests the intimacy of a boutique hotel with unprecedented luxuries. The hotel has been masterfully designed to complement the natural flow of the cliff-side it gently hangs from, with infinity pools, bridges, cottages and balcony’s tumbling delicately over the land.

The exterior of Katikies The Hotel seamlessly transitions into the interior design. Suites offer clean palettes with gentle powder blue textiles, and brilliant white bathrooms are created from the finest natural materials. Greek antiques have been hand-picked to match the traditional beamed ceilings, infusing the spaces with a subtle reference to Greece’s past. The elegant suites have been adorned with every modern day luxury, which is a clear contrast to the classic air of purity and simplicity. Private terraces ensure the finest views over the Aegean Sea and stir contemplative and reflective thought. Your days at Katikies will commence with masterfully designed breakfasts on your terrace. At night, leaving the terrace doors open, and having the soft white curtains fan gentle sea breezes over you, creates a near saintly sleeping experience. When you are not basking in the sanctity of your suite, there are several dining experiences to enjoy. If you’re hoping to remain in one of the infinity pools, Katikies boasts one of Santorini’s most legendary pool bars and poolside restaurants. The remarkable poolside restaurant is informally credited as characterizing the magical culinary vibe at the hotel. Katikies is also famed for a superb sunset ceremonial local wine tasting. 72

Holiday Traditions I
love hearing about people’s holiday traditions and thought for my column this season, I would share a few of my very own. My mother absolutely loved Christmastime and that meant every bauble, wrapping, smell and Carol that went along with it and because traditions usually pass down through the years, guess who has become her mini me?
You guessed it... Yours truly! Like mother, like daughter. The very next day after American Thanksgiving, little by little my home suddenly begins to transform into the North Pole. Every year begins the same, with the tedious journey down to my storage locker, whereby hours later I surface with more Christmas decorations than Santa himself. The big haul begins, with my 10 foot pre-lit tree, outdoor decorations, endless strings of lights, stockings, the complete ceramic villages of Dickens, the North Pole, New York City, hundreds of ornaments, cookie cutters, candles, reindeer, nutcrackers and every little thingamabob you can imagine. The problem is, I have collected so many decorations over the years, that I get confused as to what to use and what not to use and usually I want to do something new each year, so I often find myself back out to the store buying more! Once the house is lit up and looking to my satisfaction, I usually coast for a while before my shopping begins. Unlike many people, I am not an early Christmas shopper, as I absolutely love the chaos and energy of the last minute hustle and bustle of Christmas shopping. People are so festive and joyous the week leading up to the holiday and crazy as it sounds, I sometimes close stores on Christmas Eve. So instead of being the organized shopper, I choose to do other 74

Christmas Eve has always been my night alone. It’s my night to prep everything. I have a tradition of never putting one gift under the tree before Christmas morning. I grab my scissors, tape, oodles of wrapping paper, a nice bottle of champagne, my fave holiday music, my phone to talk to my sisters and I wrap, wrap, wrap. My boys are always kept occupied by their dad away from the house while I play Santa. Typically, I am up and busy until 2 or 3 am. In that time, I wrap every single thing, including socks, underwear and even batteries if something calls for them. I have followed in my parents footsteps and always wanted my boys to wake up to a sea of presents. It’s so fun to see their reactions and especially when they were little, to witness the look in their eyes knowing Santa had come to our house. Funny enough, even now that my boys are 10, 16, and 19, they still go to bed early and never want to peek until morning. We always take time before dinner to pray On Christmas day I am exhausted, but am and thank God for all of our blessings and up bright and early with my camera, and we take turns reciting what we are grateful the boys have a tradition of looking at the for in our lives. SOMETHING TO PONDER:
You don’t have to spend money to give. This is true if you don’t want to rack up a big credit card bill, but also just for the reason of being original and thoughtful. You can give assistance, you can give your time, and you may even be able to give the gift of LOVE… Especially for singles, the holidays can be a long season of heartache. It doesn’t have to be. We came across a study recently, published in 2014, by researchers Lalin Anik and Michael I. Norton that found that matchmaking promotes happiness. SO HERE’S A PROPOSITION FOR YOU:
Why not swap out the red Santa suit for a bow and arrow this season?

hen one thinks of the winter holidays certain things come to mind: time with family and friends, good food and drinks, and of course, gifts. Gift giving can be a somewhat controversial topic as people have very contrasting views on what is appropriate; some people believe that it takes away from the spirit of the holidays while others do not share this stance. Individual spending limits can vary from five dollars to five hundred dollars and more, and while certain folks prefer homemade presents, others opt for different strokes (store bought favours). Regardless of your point of view, research does continue to support the notion that people enjoy giving — more so even then spending money on themselves — and our happiness level increases when we are generous with others.

HOLIDAY 2014
During this time of year, there are numerous social engagements happening all of the time so you don’t necessarily have to set people up on a date — you can just make an introduction at a party and see what happens. Loneliness can be especially salient throughout December and trust me, being able to alleviate that feeling for someone is much more meaningful and rewarding than giving a tie, a scarf, or bath salts. It is an unconventional gift idea that certainly won’t be forgotten and, if sparks fly, it provides the possibility for holiday happiness for everyone.

alph Lauren, Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel, Louis Vuitton... Sarah Jessica Parker, Anna Wintour, Isabella Blow, Anna Piaggi... John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld and even Steven Tyler all share one common detail. They all are styled and accessorized! They wear an unbelievable foundation of clothing; some are chic and elegant, others more on the cutting edge and bohemian. Each person or collection then creates their own beauty and individuality with fabrication and accessories, every day, every week, month, season and year. Like a clothing collection, colour is an integral part of a decorating project. You want it to flow and have continuity. It is the very foundation that I build a client’s project on. With colour, you have complimentary tones and shades, which further allow you to frame out the desired atmosphere. These tones also provide you with an opportunity to play up or down the scale of pattern and texture in your fabrics, as well as with your wood finishes in your furniture and case goods. These now set the stage for how you bring the finishing details to life.

First impressions count! Just like the first model to walk down the runway to open up a collection, so does your home when you first enter. I love to propose the use wallpaper in an entrance that will create an instant buzz and set the tone for the rest of the home. But wallpaper doesn’t have to stop there on the walls; use it on the ceilings, with reflective qualities, bringing extra sparkle and glamour to the room. If you opt out of papering your ceiling, you could still paint it a contrasting colour to bring something new and edgy to the space. Alternatively, to keep it simpler, install a light fixture that is truly magnificent. It’s just like a beautiful piece of jewellery adorning a stunning outfit. When one looks at a well-tailored suit or dress, there are details, trims and finishes that can take an otherwise utilitarian and mundane piece of clothing, to one that is that truly worthy of the aesthetics, design and price.

In a modern world of fashion, it is the cut, shape and fabrication that will make it leading edge. Rooms of this type need to be super clean and modern. Even though there may be less accessorizing and embellishments, the finishing touches that are there are crucial to making it star-worthy: contrast in stitching or piping on the upholstered furniture or decorative pillows, the mixing of textures in the fabrics, or the unbelievable art collection you have acquired over the years and need the simplicity of a neutral white wall to showcase it on. Whatever it may be, it should provoke you.

You don’t have to be a fashion maven or rock star to have style, just know what you like and learn how to try new things and mix them up. one are the days when skin took comfort from cold creams and food-related masks fed our beauty appetite. Technology has played a big role in skin products and for skin care experts, it is all about the chemistry of our skin. Skin encounters harsh environments face first. In turn, unwanted lines, dark spots and premature aging begin to appear. It is inevitable yet preventable and reversible — with the help of super serums. Unlike a moisturizer, a super serum has a lighter consistency, making it easier to penetrate deep into the layers of the skin and deposit nutrients. These power formulas are packed with anti-aging ingredients, carefully created to suit different skin types and needs.

hate picking coffee out of my teeth, don’t you? One of the reasons I moved away from a French Press style of coffeemaker was that I was continually gulping grinds along with my brew.
Enter the Espro, a new product marketing itself as the first major breakthrough in coffee in 30 years. (I think the coffee pod people would have a few things to say about that.) Its defining feature is its double barrel filtration system, which means it uses two filters instead of the standard one. Fresh out of the box, the Espro is definitely a looker. This is a gadget you won’t need to hide away. Now to brew. As with a French Press, you simply put in the coffee grinds and then add hot water. Let it sit for four minutes and then slowly press down the two filters, which are attached to the lid. Due to the double walled stainless steel housing, it promises to keep coffee warm for hours. In my tests, it was still hot after four. Other bonuses — as it’s made of metal, it won’t break if dropped; it can be used to make loose leaf tea; and the company is based out of Vancouver. I love to buy local.
86
HOLIDAY 2014
I did feel the Espro was a bit light on instructions. When first taking it apart, one of the filters got stuck and I couldn’t figure out how to remove it. (The product’s website was helpful.) Also, some coffee does get left behind beneath the filters, but no biggie. Compared to similar products, it isn’t cheap. The 18-ounce medium sized Espro goes for a minimum of $100, but be sure to shop around. Most similar-sized Bodums are well under half that. But as promised, the coffee came out rich and grind free. I’m still an espresso gal myself but I think the Espro gives the French Press and the drip coffeemaker a run for their money.

Oh my! and
Silver
by Tracey Drake
No matter the size of your family or your home, it’s a fact that holiday memories are always made enjoying a great meal, sitting around a fabulous dinner table. Perhaps this is why we spend so much time on the table décor and making sure it is picture perfect. The holiday season, from Thanksgiving to the New Year, is about having fun with home décor and that is especially true for your dinner table. This season marks my 50th Christmas dinner, so I’ve done this a time or two! Take a little piece of advice — don’t get overly hung up on all the traditional mucky muck! Whether it’s a cozy family affair for four, or you have invited sixteen friends to New Years Eve dinner, make sure your table is a true reflection of your personal style — and you can never go wrong. It isn’t that different from getting dressed… 88
HOLIDAY 2014
THE UNDERPINNINGS A a well-dressed table begins with lovely linens. It doesn’t have to be formal or starched; but it needs to set the mood for your dinner table. Break away from the boring white table colour, and opt for colour. Popular hues that work well together include snow white, evergreen and ruby red, with fabric napkins in matching colours or complementary shades of silver, gold and iridescent white. For a modern twist this year, try pairing turquoise blue and tangerine orange, complimented by silver mercury glass table accessories. Children in the house? Have a bucket of permanent markers at the ready and allow the kids to create art on a plain white tablecloth and voila — an instant family heirloom!
KEEPING WITH TRADITION A typical place setting includes one dinner plate, one salad and/or side plate, one wine glass, one water glass, one coffee/tea cup and saucer, one salad fork, one dinner fork, one coffee spoon, one dessert spoon or fork, and one dinner knife.
THE LAYERS What goes on top of the linens is the exciting part. It’s the eye candy and functional pieces that set an inviting ambiance and let’s your personality shine through. You don’t need bone china and vintage linens to make it special. A traditional Christmas dinner table set with the ‘good china’, sterling-silver flatware and bohemian cut-crystal stemware is visually stunning, of course… but it’s not for everyone! Set your table with pieces that are important and symbolic to your family. A hot trend is unique place settings — vintage or modern — for each guest. Imagine how fun it would be to sit at a table where each place setting is reflective of each guest’s personality. Other emerging trends are the use of bright colours, chunkier pottery-style dinnerware and stemless, hand-blown wine glasses. Remember to layer pieces to add intrigue, depth and interest to the your table.
THE JEWELLERY No holiday table is complete without a centrepiece and a whole lot of wow factor. For some, that means a candelabra or elaborate holiday floral arrangement and crystal accessories. But, holiday tables are now taking on new interpretations of centrepieces with funkier versions of old favourites and a playful use of modern silver pieces. Use what you love, and everyone else will love it too! Just remember that bigger is not better! If a table centrepiece or accessory is so large that your guests cannot see each other across the table, or there will be no where to place food platters, it’s just too big — change it. Street Vibe: This season is a great time to try wearing cool pastel tones. Especially fuzzy knitwear and coats in light colours which can help brighten up your grey days!

by Stuart Brown | wine columnist
s we progress in our love and exploration of wine, we start to taste better and better wines.
Formerly the Sommelier at Bear Mountain Resort, Stuart now represents the wines of People, Place & Time with The Trialto Wine Group, and is an instructor for the International Sommelier Guild on Vancouver Island.
