12 . HOLIDAY 2017

Whether you’re going to an intimate party, a dinner for two or a big bash, making a statement is always front of mind. Don’t get bogged down with typical New Year’s Eve clichés like glitter, high heels and tight dresses. There are other ways to ring in the New Year with everything from a jumpsuit to vintage-inspired jewelry, paired with show stopping boots and unique bags that let the world know, I have arrived!

JUMPSUITS

Easier than separates, a jumpsuit can be just as glamorous as a dress, if not more so. The key is the fabrication, cut, and pairing the right accessories. Choose metallics, velvets or satins to ensure that this piece is dressy enough for NYE. A dressy jumpsuit should also be tailored and show some skin be it your neck and collar bone, arms, shoulders or décolletage. Stick with a jumpsuit in monochromatic black, white or metallic to keep on point for the celebratory feel. Finish off this look with a statement earring and a dressy structured clutch. Sorry gals, a jumpsuit for NYE requires a heel.

Oscar de la Renta NYE Jumpsuit

Monses Modern Tuxedo

LE SMOKING

Yves Saint Laurent created ‘Le Smoking’ Suit in 1966 as an answer to a woman’s version of a men’s tuxedo. Since then, countless iterations and interpretations can be found. This iconic silhouette never goes out of style and will be a source of conversation at any NYE soirée!

ACCESSORIES

NYE accessories need to elevate your outfit. They should add glamour and luxe to whatever you are wearing. Think statements jewelry, crystal embellished minaudieres, sequin scarves and fur muffs!

CHIC WARM COATS

It will most likely be cold on NYE. Don’t throw on any old winter coat just to stay warm. Your outfit is the whole package and what you wear on top needs to be practical yet chic enough to compliment what is underneath. No puffers here. Think wool capes, faux-fur or shearling.

SHOW STOPPING BOOTS

Weather can make it tricky on NYE to feel sexy in the shoe department while still keeping your piggies and your gams protected and warm. Opt for a bootie or better yet, an OTK boot that will cover your entire leg. The trick here is to choose a style and material that says ‘Party’ such as satin, metallic, velvet, appliqués or a sculptural heel. This is the one night you may need to pick style over comfort and wear a heel.

Alexander McQueen Horn Heeled Boots

ERIC’S NYE ST YLE TIPS: DO get your hair done, but also be realistic about the weather. A blowout for curly hair won’t last the night on a damp evening. DO choose a nail color that you wouldn’t typically wear. NYE is the one night that you can be over-the-top with your mani. DO wear the sheerest of sheer hose if you will be hopping between parties in frigid weather. They will allow you to wear a sexy dress while keeping your legs warm. DO wear a chic, yet warm coat. You want to make an entrance, but not do it shivering.

FLEETING BEAUTY OF AMSTERDAM

Scotch & Soda Fall-Winter 2017 takes inspiration from an architectural ‘find’ – a symbol for globe trotting and world discovery back in 1912... Still standing grand today, Amsterdam’s ‘Het Scheepvaarthuis’ or ‘Shipping House’, ignites this brand’s seasonal stories and themes. The creative team wandered the corridors of this maritime HQ, drawing on the building’s design reimagining its leading nautical characters for a rich and opulent Fall-Winter 2017 collection. “We are explorers, captains, even sea bandits this FW17. These characters lend us heaps of beautiful design cues. We also draw inspiration from countries furthest from ours – that’s what the beginning of shipping was all about – finding new beauty and combining it with the best ideas and craft from back home in Amsterdam.” Marlou van Engelen, Creative Director Scotch & Soda

PURCHASED FOR $18,000 IN 1877 BY CHARLES LEWIS TIFFANY, THE TIFFANY DIAMOND WAS ONCE OFFERED FOR SALE IN 1972 FOR $5 MILLION , THE EQUIVALENT OF $28.5 MILLION DOLLARS TODAY.

58 . HOLIDAY 2017

THE TIFFANY DIAMOND

I

n 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany, just twenty five years old, borrowed one thousand dollars from his father and opened a stationary and fancy goods store with partner, John B. Young, at 259 Broadway in New York City. It is here that American style would be defined. Designs that were elegant and timeless, they began with silverware and quickly moved into jewelry design. In 1886 Tiffany & Co. introduced the engagement ring as we know it today — the Tiffany® Setting —and the

company prospered like never before. By the 20th century Tiffany & Co. was America’s finest and most renowned merchant of jewels, timepieces and luxury household accessories. They had over one thousand employees, and shops in London, Paris, and Geneva. With the legacy set in motion, Tiffany designers have continued to impress new standards and revolutionize the jewelry industry for two centuries. Their collections have always effectively captured the essence of the times and have been an undeniable representation of glamour and luxury.

None more famous or awe inspiring than the Tiffany Diamond. One of the largest and finest fancy yellow diamonds in the world, the Tiffany Diamond has become a symbol of the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship established with the founding of Tiffany & Co. over eight generations ago. The 287.42-carat stone was purchased by Charles Lewis Tiffany for $18,000. The stone’s acquisition solidified Mr. Tiffany’s reputation as the “King of Diamonds” and made his enterprise the world’s diamond authority. WWW.NICHE.STYLE . 59

NICHE magazine

Charles Lewis Tiffany purchases the stone and sends it to Paris where it is cut to 128.54 carats. Officially named the Tiffany Diamond, it is deemed one of the world’s largest and finest fancy yellow diamonds.

The Diamond highlights Tiffany’s exhibit at the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. A rough diamond of 287.42 carats is discovered in the Kimberley mines of South Africa.

The rough stone was brought to Paris, where Tiffany’s chief gemologist, Dr. George Frederick Kunz, supervised the cutting of the diamond into a cushion-shape brilliant weighing 128.54 carats with an unprecedented 82 facets—24 more facets than the traditional 58-facet brilliant cut. The stone is just over an inch wide and seven-eighths of an inch from top to bottom. CUT TO ENHANCE ITS BEAUTY AND RADIANT COLOR RATHER THAN SIZE, THE DIAMOND SPARKLES AS IF LIT BY AN INNER FLAME.

60 . HOLIDAY 2017

In its only appearance in Tiffany’s Fifth Avenue windows, the Diamond is placed in the hands of a gold wire angel for a holiday display by famed window designer Gene Moore. The bright and shining stone could easily be seen from across the street.

The Tiffany Diamond was the highlight of the jeweler’s awardwinning exhibits at the great world’s fairs, including the 1893 World’s Colombian Exposition in Chicago; the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York; the 1933-34 Century of Progress in Chicago; and the 1939-40 World’s Fair in New York.

The diamond has appeared in the windows of the Fifth Avenue flagship store on one occasion. Tiffany’s renowned window designer Gene Moore placed the diamond in the hands of a floating gold wire angel for a 1955 holiday display. Passersby were amazed to see that the diamond was clearly visible from across the street.

Later appearances included De Beers’ 100th anniversary celebration in Kimberley, South Africa in 1971; the re-opening of Tiffany’s stores in London in 1986 and Tokyo in 1996; and the 2006 Bejeweled by Tiffany exhibition at Somerset House in London.

Many people have asked if the Tiffany Diamond is for sale. Indeed, it once was. Tiffany’s November 17, 1972 advertisement in The New York Times wittily announced the un-set stone could be purchased for $5,000,000 (the equivalent of $25,800,000 today). The offer, however, was good for 24

For Tiffany’s 175th anniversary in 2012 this priceless gem was reset in a magnificent necklace of dazzling white diamonds, totaling over 120 carats. The necklace was a year in the making, and became the centerpiece of anniversary celebrations in Tokyo, Beijing, Dubai and New York City. fashiontravels THE ARTISAN JEWELER & HER BALINESE CRYSTAL JOURNEY by Sylvia Tennant NICHE columnist, jewelry designer and unapologetic fashionista, Sylvia Tennant created her newest crystal jewelry collection, and NICHE has the exclusive story that began with an inspirational journey to the Indonesian island of Bali, and concludes in this issue with the fulfillment of a dream...

When I think back to the beginning of this process, the suggestion of sharing my journey to readers felt daunting. There were days when the pressure of creating trendconscious, unique and timeless jewelry was slightly crippling. I kept reminding myself that flying across the world to create my art is normal, to me. All of the little moments – the warm smiles and laughter of market vendors, the freedom of ripping through rice fields on my scooter, the smell of a meal during a torrential downpour – these are the memories that make it all worth it. Designing a collection, like any large-scale creative project, is a timely process that includes waves 66 . HOLIDAY 2017

of glorious distraction along the coast. Vastly different from the central jungles that had become familiar, Seminyak is a truly unique shopping, foodie, and party mecca. There is an unapologetic vibrancy to this scene that entices one’s curiosity and sends my bohemian heart soaring. The Prisoners of Saint Petersburg, an ever-evolving women’s fashion and accessories store, was a refreshing find in my search for a beautiful dress (also an excellent stop for lovers of curated prints, vintage-inspired sunglasses, and one-of-a-few pieces). Tucked away from the everpresent purr of commotion is Alila 68 . HOLIDAY 2017

Seminyak, where I morphed into the next phase of my trip: beach mode. My face was met with the smells of paradise and salt water in their vast, open-air reception, which is both architecturally minimalist and opulent. In addition to the expansive suites and manicured grounds, Alila offers multiple unique aspects that make this property notably excellent. The concierge team extends an impressive list of offerings, tailored to their guests’ individual interests and priorities. My stay included a hands-on lesson on the traditions of Balinese culture in an ancient temple situated in the middle of their property, and finished with a

sunset dinner at the newly launched (and highly recommended) Seasalt. This trip would not be complete without showing my mom the southern shore of Bali’s epic coastline. We traveled south on a winding road to our final destination – Karma Kandara. Designed with considerate appreciation of the land, the surroundings are dominated by staggered limestone cliffs that rise above the Indian Ocean. It is here that we steeped our senses in the slow pleasures of villa life, relishing the final days with sessions in the luxurious spa huts and soaks in our private pool. from Vietnam, which really put our ample three-story, four-bedroom villa and lush grounds to good use. On our last day, we wandered past monkeys, valleys, and viewpoints on a walkway that led to a tram, which brought us to the beach club. The collection would have to be delivered here, in the final hours of our trip. This of course was not planned, however the nervewracking delay that always seems to follow creative processes was well worth the wait. The first glimpse of the collection was met with celebratory cocktails and group hugs, yet this creative pilgrimage is just one spoke in a wheel that continues to roll my business forward. Looking ahead, this chapter is simply a draft - one I will rewrite each year in an attempt to perfect the process. But for now, I am at peace, finally holding a physical manifestation of my ideas in my hands.

I’m taking an honest and inside look at the world of modern anti-aging, and over four issues of NICHE magazine, I will share my personal experience with several facial rejuvenation treatments under the care of world renowned dermatologist and anti-aging expert Dr. Mark Lupin of Cosmedica.

by Tracey Drake

I am now more than six months into my treatments, and it’s the holidays! My skin is looks so much better firmer with reduced pores, smoother with a subtle glow and my lines and wrinkles have diminished, but I still feel like myself - only with a rested and rejuvenated look. In the final installment of this series (coming Winter 2018), I will be sharing my honest take on the journey, and how it has helped my skin and shaped my day-to-day life - including before and after photos. HEADING SOMEWHERE SUNNY FOR YOUR HOLIDAY VACATION? Great! For this issue, I am sharing what I have learned from Dr. Mark Lupin and his exceptional team at Cosmedica about sun care. Perhaps you want to prevent premature aging? Maybe you just want to know how to care for your skin when you get to that Caribbean beach! It is estimated that 90% of the signs of skin aging are due to excessive sun exposure. This can lead to premature aging with early wrinkles, a sallow, dull skin color, dehydrated skin and both brown sun spots and red dilated veins. Cosmedica offers a comprehensive approach to sun damage with the aim of not only improving the look of the skin but also helping with healthier skin.

FIX IMAGINATION AND DARING: First-ever Retrospective Exhibit of Schiaparelli and Artist Salvador Dali

Designer

Elsa

Delight in the daring and irreverent works of two celebrated artists when Dali and Schiaparelli opened at The Dali, in St. Petersburg, FL on October 18, 2017. The exhibit – presented in collaboration by The Dali Museum and Schiaparelli Paris features haute couture gowns and accessories, jewelry, paintings, drawings, objects and photos, as well as new designs by Bertrand Guyon for Maison Schiaparelli. This will be the first exhibition dedicated to the creative relationship and works of Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali – friends and collaborators that set Paris and the world ablaze with their groundbreaking visions. Elsa Schiaparelli was regarded as the most prominent figure in fashion between the two World Wars. Her designs deliberately subverted traditional notions of women’s roles and beauty, embracing and exaggerating the transgressive nature of fashion. Schiaparelli explored bold Surrealistic themes in her designs, heavily influenced by artists, especially Dali, with whom she often collaborated. The vibrant colors, experimental fabrics and elegant handmade decorations set her apart from other designers of the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the most notable clients for Schiaparelli’s haute couture designs included the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson; heiress Daisy Fellowes; and actresses Mae West and Marlene Dietrich.

“We are honored to bring the vision and work of Elsa Schiaparelli to the Museum, not only as a collaboratorconfidant of Dali’s, but also as another example of a dynamic woman whose aesthetic and production constituted a cultural force,” said Dr. Hank Hine, Dali Museum Executive Director. “Having recently opened the Frida Kahlo at The Dali exhibition, which presents the painfully beautiful work of Frida Kahlo, we find a type of resonance between these two iconic women: they both reflected and influenced the times and social zeitgeist in which they lived and worked.” Schiaparelli wrote that she “invented” her dresses, and the designs were known for their elegant and daring aesthetic combined with exquisite craftsmanship – a marriage of new ideas with traditional craft. Her designs were like the paintings of Dali in that they combined renaissance precision with wild imagination and dreamlike visions. Their fashion and art both delighted and shocked the senses and that approach was a trademark of their collaborations; their works embodied a sense of freedom and possibility that enlivened popular culture during a tumultuous time. In 1954, Schiaparelli closed her couture house and devoted herself to writing her autobiography – Shocking Life – written in the third-person, like Dali’s own biography. After remaining quiescent for more than five decades, Maison Schiaparelli was reopened in 2012 at 21 Place Vendome, the very place where Elsa Schiaparelli left it. Today, Schiaparelli continues the designer’s legacy by creating alluring and surprising designs for the Hollywood elite and private clients around the world. A selection of these 78 . HOLIDAY 2017

new designs including fashion and jewelry pieces will be featured in the show. Dali and Schiaparelli will run through January 14, 2018, followed by the opening of Dali and Duchamp, which premieres at The Dali on Feb 10, 2018. The Dali and Schiaparelli exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with essays by Dilys Blum, Curator of Costume and Textiles for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Dali Museum Curator of Exhibitions William Jeffett, Dali Museum Director Hank Hine, and exhibition consultant John William Barger III. The exhibition is organized by The Dali, St. Petersburg FL in collaboration with Schiaparelli, Paris with loans from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum and others. GUERLAIN Terracotta 4 Seasons Bronzer

KAT VON D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick

TOM FORD Black Orchid Fragrance

What I love about this bronzer is the matte and warm tones without being too orange or ashy. I apply it with a big fluffy brush anywhere the sun would hit and voila! I look like I’ve been to the beach and remain glowing, long after the summer sun has gone.

I’ve come to love these long-wear lippies by Kat Von D. They’re hydrating, pigmented and don’t chap the lips at all. My color of the moment is Muneca. This is the life-proof lipstick that will not wear off! Glides on like a gloss and sets to a true matte.

Moving into winter, it’s time to put away your lighter summer fragrance and replace it with a seasonally appropriate perfume. I love this scent! It’s rich and sexy yet classy and sophisticated perfect for winter. Who doesn’t want to smell that way!?
