When you love fashion, there are few things more exciting than sitting front row at fashion week, and getting an insiders glimpse into the future. I caught up with Stephanie Anne McKay, a rising star fashion illustrator who is making her mark on the industry by sketching live on the runway, for some of the most iconic and respected designers in the industry today.

FAST FASHION live sketching on the runway Stephanie Anne McKay is a Fashion Illustrator based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her work is an abstract use of watercolor and digital media that results in a raw approach to figure study as it relates to the fashion world. Her work places a palpable emphasis on contrast and color vibrancy - two things that are also critical to the work of any fashion designer. Stephanie is well known for her live sketching talents, as seen at A-list designer fashion shows and events. With her instinctive approach, Stephanie executes exceptional illustrations in less than five minutes, and because of her immense talent, has worked with notable brands includes Hermès, Chanel, Hudson’s Bay Company and the National Ballet of Canada.

How did you get into your field of work, specifically as it relates to the fashion and beauty world?

After finishing a very traditional art education, I decided I wanted to use my skills in a creative industry. Fashion, especially fashion photography has always been a big inspiration for me so the choice to illustrate for the industry seemed like a natural transition. Through networking online, I met my agent Marcus Kan, who writes the fashion illustration blog, Draw A Dot. He got me my first gig, which was

live illustrating at Toronto Fashion Week. From there, my work has grown to reach a larger audience, especially through social media, and I’m able to work with lots of great clients in the industry!

Tell us about your art medium?

I work in watercolor as well as digital painting. Watercolor has a wonderful fluid quality and a high vibrancy in color. I love it for its simplicity of application; it’s a medium that needs to be planned first and never over worked. The result is a fluidity and naturalness to the pieces. I also sketch digitally on tablets, which is my medium of choice for live sketching. It’s so convenient to be able to bring along a digital version of my studio materials for runway shows where space and time is limited.

How long have you been doing live sketching at fashion week runway shows?

I have been live sketching for three years now. I’ve had the pleasure of sketching at runway shows at both Toronto Fashion Week as well as New York Fashion week.

Do you have favorite designer collections that you love to sketch?

My favorite designers to sketch are Dolce & Gabbana, Delpozo and Mary Katrantzou. I love to draw pieces with embellishments, rich colors, and interesting prints. I never have trouble finding new inspiration with all the creative designs that out there.

by Jennifer Costanzo If you are sick of wearing your string bikini to the beach, it is time to opt for a high waist swimsuit.

As the runways have shown, designers have looked to retro styles for inspiration and the same goes for the ‘It’ swimsuit of the season. The high waisted silhouette emphasizes and flatters each and every beautiful curve. This makes this style of swimsuit the most feminine suit on the market.

Mara Hoffman, Invista, Sirenes De Soleil, Zimmermann and Michael Kors swimwear all have a rather retro inspired style about their pieces, while maintaining a modern take. Michael Kors S/S 2017 runway show left viewers and fashionistas alike smiling and uplifted. Kors through peppy music, colorful and breezy pieces made you feel like you were on vacation. This was made even more so by the swimwear he sent down the runway.

His swimsuits were high-waisted with a retro ‘It’ girl vibe about them. Some were belted, some were paired with a bikini top, and some were matched with a long sleeve top. Paired with a matching bag, you could easily see yourself wearing it with an oversized knit once the evening hit.

High waisted swimsuits do not have to be all material. If you’re looking for something a little more edgy or sexy, look to a bottom with cut-outs or with lacing up the side. This style of swimsuit is classier and you’re still able to show some skin while maintaining shape and beauty. This style adds definition at the waist and helps create the appearance of curves at the hips.

Choosing a style with horizontal stripes will also add to this ‘hourglass’ effect. To keep high waist bottoms feeling modern, wear them with a simple triangle top. However, to embrace the vintage feel, go for a structured or halter neck style, a flattering and fresh style that you can definitely make your own. Don’t be afraid of pattern either, or go for muted color blocking for a more sophisticated feel.

If you had told me five years ago that a significant part of my future career would be maneuvering a scooter through rice fields and jungles wearing a backpack filled with gemstones from around the world, I would have laughed in disbelief. However, this was my reality just a few days ago as I made the 20-minute ride from my bungalow in Ubud to my silversmith Made’s studio. I’m currently on my third visit to Bali, and second design trip for Zaleska Jewelry.

The evolution of Zaleska started with my best friend, Danielle Noel.

She and I began collaborating on necklaces and rings that featured repurposed vintage findings inspired by her esoteric aesthetic.

As the brand evolved, the vision for Zaleska grew into the idea that jewelry had a greater purpose than simply adornments - it could ultimately enhance one’s state of being. Incorporating crystals into the brand came from a genuine

gemstones for healing and honing energetic fields. There are 4 main gemstones that have always been a part of the Zaleska brand over the years. Each has inspired me because of their beauty (especially when polished and faceted), coloring,

Labradorite

A fan favorite because of its believed ability to separate one’s energy from other people. It is one of the most powerful protectors in the mineral kingdom. Occurring in igneous rocks, its coloring varies from gray to blue, green to yellow, and sometimes purple.

Moonstone

Predominantly associated with feminine energy and the moon, this gemstone enhances intuition and promotes inspiration. It has become increasingly popular over the years and I’m thrilled to be working with a large batch from India in this next collection.

Emerald

This gemstone soothes and protects heart energy. In the ancient world,

it was dedicated to the goddess Venus for its ability to insure security in love. Emerald has been a source of fascination and reverence in many cultures for over six thousand years and has been highly honored in all major religions for its spiritual power and beauty. Fun fact: it was sold in the markets of Babylon as early as 4,000 B.C.

Turquoise

The boom of bohemian fashion has turned this stone into a classic staple. Similar to labradorite, turquoise is excellent for dispelling negative energy. It is also known to alleviate anxiety and protect its wearer while traveling. It’s one of the few stones that has a valuation is based on origin.

Summer 2017 is all about prints.

Whether they are artsy, wild, retro or abstract, this season has a print for everyone. However, the most notable pattern was bold and graphic floral print. Wallpaper inspired floral print can be seen in mix and match outfits, in head-to-toe looks and even in small discreet touches.

The runways this season were upbeat with a saturated color palette.

Fashion designers chose to step away from the typically S/S 2017 tiny floral patterns and chose to use bold flowers that had more bite.

Labels like Chloe, Dries van Noten, Roberto Cavalli, Prada, Christopher Kane and Michael Kors looked to the past for inspiration. The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s were all on trend when it came to shapes, cuts and materials.

However, the 70’s were definitely the decade of the moment for prints, specifically the wallpaper floral print.

These throwback patterns often took the form of large flowers, with a multitude of big and brightly colored blooms splashed all over silhouettes.

Shown in head-to-toe looks, they had a full-on 70’s effect.

As Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada sarcastically stated: “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking,” to some this might ring true, however, this season the floral prints really were groundbreaking. The flowers for S/S 2017 are so different in color, scale, fabrication and mood that designers thought it best to go all out with full blooms. From Rococo-style jacquard with ruffles and raw hems at Marques’ Almeida, to subdued blousy 1970’s bouquets at Chloe and neon carnations at Balenciaga. There is nothing standard about these arrangements this season.

The looks are certainly bold, however, there is always an option for everyone when it comes to a trend.

Here are some ideas on how to wear this trend, go for a statement with bright floral prints. Don’t be afraid of mixing in another print through your shoes or bag. If you need help choosing a flower, go for the pansy.

After Christopher Kane sent an entire collection inspired by the pansy down the runway, everyone will want to be wearing pansies on their clothes. If you are ready to embrace this trend fully, make your shoes match your blouse and skirt.

You can get away with wearing the same print on everything. Finally, modernize your floral dresses for summer by layering them over a trouser in a matching print.

I’m taking an honest and inside look at the world of modern anti-aging, and over the next three issues of NICHE magazine, I will share my personal experience with several facial rejuvenation treatments under the care of world renowned dermatologist and anti-aging expert Dr. Mark Lupin of Cosmedica.
