VIKING NATION NEWSLETTER January, 2017

Viking Nation, The 2016-17 school year is flying by once again. Staff will soon make recommendations and students will begin selecting courses changes for next semester. In the next few weeks, you may want to review your students’ progress, talk with them about future goals and what their course changes might include. Remember, it is very informative for you and your student to review their data on our Home Access Center (HAC) web page. If you need assistance feel free to contact the guidance office for instructions. School counselors are always available for course explanation and the most beneficial pathway in your selection process. I would encourage students to challenge themselves and make every effort to take a full schedule as an upper classman. On Tuesday, December 13th a group of Mazama students visited Klamath Community College. These students toured the campus and learned about every program that KCC offers. Our counseling department took approximately 40 students. All grades were welcome to attend, but priority was be given to seniors and juniors. One of the many other opportunities for Mazama students in the near future is that Oregon Tech is offering two introductory to STEM courses this winter; The Digital Earth and Communication with Outer Space. Both courses are offered tuition free and offer a transportation allowance as well as covering all books and fees. The courses are designed for Juniors and Seniors and are part of Guided College or Career Exploration program. In an attempt to reach more students, OIT tried to schedule the courses for evenings and weekends to eliminate interference with our school day and reduce conflicts with winter sports. So, how do you get started?

1. Find the course you want to explore. 2. Email grace.rusth@oit.edu for enrollment information. 3. Complete the online HST application at www.oit.edu/hst 4. Register for the course. Registration instructions are provided via email after application is processed and a student ID is generated. 5. GIS 107 and ENGR 107 are free to participating high school students Viking Nation would like to welcome Veronica Wittscheck, our new school therapist from Klamath Basin Behavioral Health. She is coming to us from Nashville Tennessee and for the past five years has been a Child and Adolescent Therapist. Steve Morosin Principal

Guidelines for requesting a student opt out of state required testing: The State of Oregon requires school districts to test students using the Smarter Balanced Assessment in grades 3 thru 8 and in grade 11. Districts are required to test 95% of all students and 95% of students in specifically defined groups identified on the annual school report card. Parents and adult students are allowed to opt out of state required testing in accordance with Oregon law. The opt out procedure has been defined by the Oregon Department of Education, and the required forms are available on the district’s website under the tab marked for “Parents.” The Oregon Department of Education allows only this official form to be used to request a student be “opted out” of testing. Opt out forms must be filled out completely and signed by the parent or adult student in the presence of a school official. Opt out forms must be received prior to the start of student testing.
