VIKING NATION NEWSLETTER November, 2018

Viking Nation,

We want to thank those of you who attended Parent Teacher conferences in October and taking the time to keep current with your students’ progress at Mazama. We had over 250 parents attend over the two days and the staff appreciates the efforts. We hope to see more of you in March! Remember you can always monitor your students’ academic progress, attendance and behaviors via the Home Access system. If you don’t have your students log in information or need some assistance with the program please contact the guidance office. This is also located on our school web page www.kcsd.k12.or.us Once again our Science department is going above and beyond to assist our feeder elementary schools. Over the past few weeks we have had several of the schools visit and on October the 25th we are hosting Ferguson 2nd graders at Wards Wetlands on the MHS campus. The event will go from 11:35-1:00 pm and will be outside in the wetlands area working with our students. This last one is special because we will also have a group of 7th graders from Brixner joining us. They will lead a station on planting Native plants to Oregon that help foster the Monarch Butterfly population. The kids will be planting them in the wetlands as one of our stations. The other stations that will be discussed are water, air, soil temperatures, plant diversity and macroinvertebrates in the area. We were lucky enough last week to have a guest speaker from NASA come to speak at our school, Norman Chaffee. He is a veteran of over 50 years’ experience in the aerospace industry at the NASA Johnson Space Center, focused on the design, development, and operation of manned spacecraft and their systems. His expertise is in propulsion and power systems; robotics; biomedical engineering; systems engineering and integration; and program management. He held a number of senior positions in these areas at the NASA Johnson Space Center, from 1962 – 1998. Since 1998 he has worked as a consultant, contractor, and volunteer for the Johnson Space Center Education Office, specializing in the design and implementation of unique STEM programs for middle school and high school students. He has served as the Manager of the highly successful Space Settlement Design Competition for High School Students from 1999 to 2012. Thanks and let’s have a great year! Steve Morosin Principal
