MUSIC IN MAY-Three Mazama students will travel to Forrest Grove in May to participate in the 3 day Honor Choir at Pacific University. Shayla Fleener, Laura Wright, and Kristen Bradbury will sing with high school students from all over the state and participate in several vocal clinics. Congratulations! The Spring Music concert is scheduled for May 20th in the Mazama Cafeteria at 7pm. This concert will feature all of the bands and choirs. Mrs. Dodson, the choir director is also inviting all staff and community members to join in singing the Halleluja Chorus from the “Messiah”. Either bring your own score or use one of ours. School students have formed a “Glee” club this spring that meets on Mon. and Fri. at lunch time. This gives students a chance to sing more “popular” songs as well as be a member without joining a choir class. So far, lot’s of fun! Nick Morse, a senior, was selected by audition this year to participate in the annual All State Festival in Eugene, OR. Congratulations, Nick! The Mazama Jazz/Showchoir TRADEWINDS, came home with the “SPIRIT” trophy from the Clackamus Jazz Festival in February. This trophy is given to groups that best represent the promotion and positive demonstrative of what the Jazz genre is all about. Good going Tradewinds. Be sure to check out their photo. You will see this group in action at the final spring concert. Don’t miss it.

Mazama’s Student Government recently organized and performed a school wide assembly, at Peterson Elementary, to promote the Hands and Words Aren’t for Hurting program. The assembly included a special dance produced by senior Nicholas Morse, a video about what to do when you see someone being bullied, and activities to show how bad actions and words can hurt others. Prior to the assembly, Mazama students created anti-bullying lessons and presented them to student in grades K-6. These lessons included a variety of topics ranging from how to compliment others to recognizing and dealing with cyberbullying. During the lessons, students traced their hands on purple paper and took the pledge to not use their hands or words for hurting themselves or others. These hands will be displayed at Peterson Elementary to serve as a constant reminder of the promise they made to contribute to the fight against bullying.

RESULTS AT State Conference! Our members had an amazing time at the State Business Leadership Conference. They toured Portland State University, visited Powell’s books, ate at the Cheesecake Factory, and did great in their competitive events! We are excited to have nine members qualify for the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Only 3% of all FBLA members in the world get to attend this conference. Mazama FBLA is proud of all of their members and their success.
