PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) The most exciting aspect of mobility tools at Mazama is the opportunity for us to liberate students from the limitations of the classroom. Students no longer need to be tethered to wired desktops or computer labs. In a wireless environment, every site on campus lends itself to the computing and communication capabilities that can enable, enrich and personalize the learning experience. Mobility is also tied to the goal of 1-to-1 computing, where students may bring their own computers. Increasingly, the boundaries of technology supported learning will no longer even be confined to the campus. Rather, the school, home and other locations will be seen as part of a boundary and interconnected learning environment, one that supports both individual and collaborative learning endeavors in powerful new ways. A recent report produced by the Sesame Workshop urges school IT leaders to embrace the power and value of mobile technology as a force for enhanced learning. “Mobile devices are part of the fabric of children’s lives today: They are here to stay,” states Michael H. Levine, the executive director of the New York City based organization. “It is no longer a question of whether we should use these devices to support learning, but how and when to use them.” A growing body of research underscores the power of mobile technology to enhance the learning environment. In classroom studies over the last several years, the Research Center for Educational Technology at Kent State University found that hand-held devices enhance student motivations, engagement and problem solving abilities. Carly Shuler, author of the Sesame Workshop report, found clear evidence of mobile technology as a supporting tool in the learning process. “While these devices are undoubtedly a source of fun and entertainment, proponents of mobile learning believe they have significant potential to be a key ally in supporting learning experiences,” she writes. Mazama enters the remainder of the school year and the start of 2015-16 as KCSD pilot building for student access to wireless and opportunity for BYOD to be tested.

On May 1st, the Mazama Chamber Singers will be competing at the State Ensemble Festival at Pacific University. They have been fine-tuning their singing abilities to give an excellent performance at the state level competition. Wish them luck! Jennifer Albertson, Kristen Bradbury, Nicole Carter, Shayla Fleener, Hannah Levesque, Mackenzie Moran, Makayla Rote, Tia Sekavec, Erika Thompson-Godbey, and Laura Wright. On April 15th, the Mazama A Cappella Choir qualified for state at their district competition. They gave a compelling performance that received high praise from Dr. Paul French, the director of choirs at SOU. He said they sang their pieces with beautiful tone and performed with moving musicality unlike other high school choirs. A Cappella now has the chance of being selected to compete at the state level. This is the first time in seven years that Mazama has had this opportunity, so please congratulate the choir members. The Mazama High School A Cappella Choir was selected to perform at the OSAA State Choir Contest. They are one of 12 4A schools in the state performing at this prestigious event. They will sing at George Fox University on Friday May 8th. Please congratulate the singers who will be participating.

We see through their eyes what it is like to be ridiculed and picked on, what it feels like to have your “friends” turn on you because of one simple misstep. But just when life seems most bleak, enter a here – a quirky, awkward, fun-loving superhero: Empathy Girl!
One less thing to stress out about! Turn in your library books by May 22nd. Can’t find your book? Come to the library and Mrs. Markus will tell you how much you owe! Thanks---
